MyPC Mac Client InstallationPrerequisites

MyPC 5.1.10 Server and 5.1.x Web Components or higher. For more information please refer to Configuring your MyPC Server to support the MyPC Mac Public Library Client section in this manual.

The MyPC Mac client is dependent on the LMS Fines and Overdue option being enabled on the MyPC server.

This Mac Client supports 10.11 (El-Capitan) only.

LimitationsBefore moving on to the installation, please note the following limitations of the MyPC MacPublic Library Client as compared to the MyPC Windows Public Library Client.

1. No Lock and Inactivity time out.2. Unlike on the MyPC Windows client, when a user manually restarts the system from

within a logged on session, on restart their booking will be cancelled. However if the Mac is powered off and on; the booking will remain.

3. Please note that the MyPC Mac Client can only recognize the IP address of theMyPC server, therefore its NetBIOS name should not be used.

4. There is no countdown timer shown on Logoff, Reboot or Shutdown messages sent by TA/NTAs from the MyPC web interface.

5. There is no yellow clock that turns black as the user’s session elapses. Instead a red MyPC Clock is shown in the Mac menu bar next to which is displayed the time remaining as shown below.

6. The MyPC Mac Client does not come bundled with a VNC distribution (such as iSPY)and therefore iSPY functionality is not available out of the box for Macs.

7. You cannot click on the tray icon to extend session – it can only be done at the 3 warning messages (if self-extension allowed).

8. Extend Sessions (if allowed) on the Mac can only be done once per session via the warning messages.

9. When using Block bookings if the Mac display name in MyPC + the Block booking name is 16 characters or more it will allow logon to the booking but there is no MyPC control. We recommend a display name of 5 characters which allows a block booking name of up to 10 characters.

10. You cannot use double, single quotes or ampersand when defining the DisplayName, Resource Types for the Mac and when creating Block Bookings.

11. When using AUP the Apple supported dialogue box does not allow the use of scroll bars therefore the AUP message should be defined to fit on the screen. The dialogue box will grow to fit the screen showing the AUP but may be cut of if not defined.

12. It is not possible to customize the background when using our MyPC Public Librarycustom login bundle.

13. No banner is shown when the Mac is locked and a password is requested to unlock –This should be disabled.

The MyPC Mac client for Public Library works by authenticating a patron/user to a Library management system (LMS), this is then processed and based on the users’ group in MyPC a desktop profile is loaded. For desktop profiles we can either use local Mac user accounts or Active Directory Domain users. Please note that if you use Active Directory users the Apple Mac must be joined to the domain using the native Apple Active Directory plugin.

Simple workflow:In MyPC we create Desktop Profiles (in the MyPC web interface) e.g. Child or Adult. This is further explained in this document. The Desktop Profiles are then assigned to a User Group in MyPC or the individual Mac resource in Locations.

On the MyPC controlled Macs the user logs on with their LMS user credentials (Library number and PIN). The logon request then goes to off to the MyPC Server Service which internally sends this information to the LMS.

If the user exists MyPC will validate the group e.g. Child or Adult the user belongs to, MyPC then determines the Desktop Profile to load configured in MyPC which then goes off and logs the user in with the Local logon details.

Creating a Local Mac UserCreating a Local user in Mac is explained further in this section.

Open System Preferences on the Mac which looks like this.

Once opened you will be presented with the following screen:

You will need to click on Users & Groups under the System options. The following screen is displayed.

To make changes on this screen you need to elevate permissions so you need to click on the padlock at the bottom left of the screen.

This opens an authentication box where we need to enter the credentials of a user with elevated /admin rights on the Mac (this is user is usually created at time of installation of the Mac operating System).

Once you have authenticated the padlock is displayed as open and you can create the LocalUser.

To add a Local User click on the Plus button. The following window appears.

Select the Standard option under New Account. Now add Full Name, Account name, Password and Verify along with an optional password hint. Click Create User.

Joining Mac to Active DirectoryTo Join the Apple Mac to a Active Directory please follow the guidelines below. Open System Preferences on the Mac which looks like this.


You will need to click on Users & Groups under the System options. The following screen is displayed.

This opens a authentication box where we need to enter the credentials of a user with elevated /admin rights on the Mac ( this is user is usually created at time of installation of the Mac operating System).

Once you have authenticated the padlock is displayed as open we can start to make changes.

To join the Active Directory domain, you need to click on Login Options.

Select the option Join next to Network Account Server – this opens the following dialog box.

In here we need to enter the DNS domain name of the Active Directory domain this Mac is going to be part of. In our example it will be joining a domain name hydrogen.local. Once we enter the domain name several new options will appear as per the screenshot below. (Assumption is that proper network configuration has taken place prior to this step, it isessential that the DNS is configured correctly).

To join the domain, we need to bind to the Directory so we need to enter the ClientComputer ID as it will be known in Active Directory and the domain administrator credentials. This will then try to add and bind this computer to the domain. If successful, the Network Account Server should display a Green icon and the domain we have joined.

Configuring your MyPC Server to support theMyPC Mac Public Library ClientEnabling Mac Support whilst Installing MyPC ServerPlease start with the steps detailed in the MyPC Setup and Installation guide. When you reach the stage Install additional modules please follow the steps detailed below:

Please note that MyPC 5.1.10 Server and 5.1.x Web Components or higher is required to support the MyPC Mac Public Library Client.

Please select Yes from the first drop down option.

Selecting Yes on the first option shown above will install MyPC for environments where users do not have unique user accounts in Active Directory and credentials from a Library Management System will be used for authentication purposes.

The following option Library Fines and Overdue Items module setting is required for the operation of the MyPC Mac Public Library Client.

The option email booking receipts are optional and have no impact on the operation of theMyPC Mac Public Library Client.

The MyPC 4.x client-server communication protocol must be set to Yes.

Enabling Mac Support after MyPC Server has been InstalledIf you already have the MyPC Server installed please follow the steps detailed below:

1. Open the registry and set the following key to True

HKLM\Software\ITS\MyPC 3\MyPC Server\LMS_INSTALLED = True


HKLM\Software\ITS\MyPC 3\MyPC Server\PUBLIC_LIBRARY_INSTALLED = True


HKLM\Software\ITS\MyPC 3\MyPC Server\SEND_NEW_ALLOWED_BOOKING_METHODS = True

2. Next restart the MyPC Server Service in order to make these changes take effect.

Creating a Desktop ProfileA Desktop Profile is required in environments such as public libraries where users’ logon credentials are stored in a Library Management System (LMS). These settings govern how the user will be logged on to Mac OSX once MyPC/Cire, via TripleA, has authenticated the user against the Library Management System (either via SIP2, ODBC or by querying data exported in formats such as CSV) or LDAP.

Desktop profiles in MyPC Mac Public Library can be assigned either at the Group level or individual resource level.

On the MyPC Web Admin page click on the Settings icon. The following page is displayed.

Please speak to your IT Department if you do not have the login details/TA rights to accessthe MyPC web interface.

Click on the Desktop Profiles icon to display the Desktop Profiles options.

This setting is configured using the Add New option on the Desktop Profile dialogue. This setting will configure the logon credentials used to seamlessly logon MyPC users to the Mac clients during periods of normal operation (during communication).

Applying Desktop Profile at User Group LevelDesktop profiles in MyPC Mac Public Library can be assigned at the User Group level. This is useful when you run a mix of Windows and Mac clients and wish to use the same desktop profiles based on the users Group across both platforms.

In MyPC web admin navigate to User Groups > Click Provider

Left click the group you wish to apply the Desktop Profile to. This will open a menu of options

Click Edit

You will be present with the User Group Properties dialog window. Using the drop down forDesktop Profile select the profile you wish to see for this Group of users.

Click Save

Applying Desktop Profiles to ResourcesDesktop profiles in MyPC Mac Public Library can be assigned at the resource level.

In MyPC Web Admin navigate to Sites > Locations > Resources. The following screen will show.

Click on a resource and select Edit from the context menu.

The following dialogue will appear. Here you can select the appropriate profile that that will be applied to the specified resource.

When you are pleased with the configuration, click on the Save button. Alternatively click on the X to close the dialogue.

MyPC Mac Public Library with PaperCutIntegration Client InstallationThe MyPC Public Library Mac client installer is a single Package which will install the client. To install the client it is recommended that you are logged into the Mac as a local administrator.

First of all download the Mac client onto the Mac, the package looks like this:

Once you click the package to install you will be presented with a validation check.

Click Continue.

Once the check has passed you are can proceed with the installation.

Click Continue.

The Mac client installer will then prompt for the MyPC server it will communicate with. It is important to note that the IP address of the server is used as the Mac client will not communicate to the server via the NetBIOS name.

By default MyPC Clients and the server communicate on TCP port 33334, we do not recommend that you change this value unless port 33334 is already in use on your network. Click Next to continue.

Please note that the MyPC Mac Client will recognize only the IP address of your MyPCserver and not the NetBIOS name.

The next screens determine two options:

Local Logon – This will allow local users on the Mac to bypass MyPC control Encrypted communication – This will encrypt all communication between client and

server (you need to be running MyPC server 5.1.10 or above). This must match whatis configured on the server.

No PinLogon – This is used to set the MyPC Mac client to not show the PIN field in environments where users are validated by their patron/user id only.

Click Continue

The next screen prompts for a MyPC client local admin password. This is used when using the No PinLogon function of the client – it allows on the logon box a way to renable the password field to allow local admin users to login and bypass the MyPC client. If you click 3times on the dialog you will be prompted for this password.

Click Continue

Please note you will be prompted for this password even if you do not select the NoPinLogon option.

The Banner Position screen in the installer allows you to place the status banner showing the PC state in various locations on the login screen. You can simply click the image of where you would like the banner to be shown or use the drop down. By default, it ispositioned Top Center.

The next screen gives us an overview of the size required and the location of installation.

Click Install.

You will need to elevate the rights so the following dialog box will appear. You should enter the local administrator credentials to get past this; failure to do this will result in an unsuccessful installation.

This screen will prompt the user for the administrator password in order to authenticate the user prior to installation.

Enter the password and click Install Software.

The Mac client will now install and copy the relevant files to its location.

This screen shows that the installation has completed successfully and prompts the user to restart. Click Restart to finish the installation and restart the machine.

A successfully installed MyPC Mac Client will look similar to the one shown below where a patron number and pin is required to login.

When using the No PinLogon option the Login screen will display this below:

To login to the Mac as a local admin and thus bypass the MyPC software you need to enter the username in the following format

adminusername@macname

where the adminusername is the administrator user on the Mac and the macname is the name of the Mac ( this can be found from Sharing in System Preferences)

PaperCut IntegrationPaperCut integration is built into the MyPC Mac Public Library Client installer. However, in order for this to work correctly there are a few files that need to be present on the Mac.

Install the PaperCut ClientStart and log into the Mac computer as an Admin user and check that the Mac is on the network. Next, follow the steps below.

1. Open the Finder.2. From the Go menu, select Connect to Server…3. Enter the PCClient share's connection details like:

smb://server_name/pcclient4. Enter password information if requested.5. Drag the PCClient package over to the local hard disk's Applications folder. The

copy process will commence.

Set Permissions to PCClient.appNext ensure that the correct permissions are applied to the PCClient.app to have full access to the package. We will use chmod to enable the correct permissions to run recursively i.e. read/write/execute for the relevant directory.

Open a Terminal and type the following command:

sudo chmod -R +rwx /Applications/PCClient.app

Further information on how to install the PaperCut on the Mac can be found on the PaperCut website. For the MyPC – PaperCut Mac client integration to work it must be copied to the Applications folder locally on each Mac.

Set Permissions to ppclauncherNext ensure that the correct permissions are applied to the ppclauncher which is also located in Applications to have full access to the package. We will use chmod to enable the correct permissions to run recursively i.e. read/write/execute for the relevant directory.


sudo chmod -R +rwx /Applications/pcclauncer

Click Close to continue.

Install the pc-shared-secret.dat fileThis step is required and used by the integration to ensure correct validation of the user. If this file does not exist on the local Mac the integration will not function as expected.

Follow the steps below.

1. Open the Finder.2. From the Go menu, select Connect to Server…3. Enter the pc-shared-secret.dat share's connection details like:

smb://server_name/data4. Enter password information if requested.5. Drag the pc-shared-secret.dat package over to the local hard disk's Users/Shared

folder. The copy process will commence.

Add pcclauncer in Start UpThe PaperCut add the ppclauncher as a Login Item for the local desktop profile we use e.g.pluser.

Open System Preferences on the Mac which looks like this.


Click on Users & Groups under the System options. The following screen is displayed.

Once you have authenticated the padlock is open then click on Login Items. Browse to/Applications and select ppclauncher.

Click the lock to prevent further changes.

The final task is to hide the Terminal windows when the PaperCut client launches.

To make this change open a Terminal window and select Preferences > Profiles

Ensure that you select Close if the shell exited cleanly by selecting this option from the drop down menu under When the shell exits.

Click Restart to ensure all settings are applied.

Logon to MyPC as a general user. In this example we will login as user 11111 ( with NoPinLogon enabled)

After a successful logon the PaperCut Client will show in the top right hand corner displaying the user balance.

MyPC Mac Client Un-installationTo uninstall the MyPC Mac Client please follow the steps listed as follows.

Logon to the MyPC Mac Client as an Administrator by clicking on the Admin User Login screen button.

Browse to the Applications Folder/ Open Applications

Find the MyPCUninstaller exec and double click this. It will open a Terminal window requesting a password.

Please enter the Admin User Password and click Enter on the Keyboard. This will then proceed to run a script to remove the MyPC Classic client. Once complete please reboot theMac.
