The Shores of Burgundy Paradoxically, water is an asset of primary importance in wine country. Burgundy has, in fact, the largest network of rivers and canals in France which, in the 17th century, contributed to its economic development by enabling the transport of raw materials. Today, pleasure boater or not, it will make you happy: the towpaths are the starting points for excursions to explore the cyclists and boatmen, cross natural habitats where you can see ducks and herons, and you can stop in the lock houses converted into taverns or lively pubs, and call in at ports and mooring points to replenish supplies. As for festivities, there are several dates that offer you the traditions born out of life on and around the water: nautical jousting, log run festivals and canal festivals, and the pardon des mariniers (boat festival). Not to be missed!

City breaks Auxerre, Sens, Dijon, Beaune, Nevers, Chalon-sur-Saône, Mâcon... large or small, towns full of art and history or “simple” towns full of character, the towns of Burgundy are much more than open air museums to be discovered alone or with a guide. Quite the contrary! Take the time to enjoy their atmosphere; full of charm, they will give you many pleasant memories. During the day, depending on time and according to your preference, treat yourself to some shopping in the commercial streets, a visit to the market or a stroll through the streets or gardens. And in the evening, leave your hotel or your guest house: go to rediscover the town by night, in a different light and enjoy the many style; cosy wine bars, performance venues...

Green holidays Stressed or worn out? Then head for Burgundy! It offers the ideal environment to disconnect and recharge. Devise your own stay: “carefree” or active. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, let yourself go with nothing to do, give yourself a moment of pampering dedicated to nature walks and evenings around the different activities you can try: hiking in all its forms, lively or recreational water sports, climbing or caving... As for accommodation, we invite you to book a yurt, a tree house, a cottage by the lake or a caravan; or, more traditionally, to go camping, or rent a cottage, or stay in a guest house or an attractive privately-run hotel in the heart of a green holiday resort or a quaint village. Puisaye, Tonnerrois, Châtillonnais, Auxois, Nivernais, Morvan, Charolais... are some of the destinations to favour and discover in all seasons.

Visits to vineyardsFew regions express the notion of “civilization of wine” like Burgundy. Here, wine is the foundation, the origin of many landscapes, buildings, traditions... So many beautiful things patiently built around wine, by wine and for wine! With family, friends or a couple, you can explore the vineyards and vary your pleasures: visit the Clos de Vougeot or the Hameau du Vin, try some wine hot-air balloon or microlight, visit a wine festival or wine fair, be welcomed at the home of a winemaker... we have gone into overdrive and concocted offers to taste sip by sip. And 4 territories have been awarded the “Vineyards and Discoveries” label, which guarantees you quality “wine tourism”: tourism professionals work hand in hand with those of wine. For your enjoyment.

Burgundy on footBurgundy has long been a haven for walkers. In fact, since the Middle Ages, when pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela crossed the region en masse from Vézelay to Nevers. This activity has not declined, since the region is now crossed by some 6, 000 km of marked trails, from simple walks to hiking on a small and grand scale. With a guide or totally independently, lace up your trainers and explore the Morvan massif, the vineyards or the banks of the Loire. Along the way, you will go from discovery to discovery, because some routes are historical, others thematic, but always in the midst of nature for guaranteed well-being!

For more info, the guidebook “La Bourgogne à pied” (in french) published by the French Federation of Hiking is available in bookstores.

… in time with the waterWith nearly 1,200 miles of rivers and canals, Burgundy is a boating paradise: river cruises in a hotel barge to navigate with comfort; a houseboat to enjoy with family or friends for the joys of free-cruising or a boat ride for a shorter trip with the kids... There’s something for everyone. Cast off and take to the water: your journey will be punctuated by stops and you can enjoy a passage through a lock or stop to enjoy the walks and discoveries along the towpaths. Nearby there are vineyards, picturesque villages, castles, churches... in short, a varied Burgundy of exceptional heritage.

…on horsebackThe Burgundy wildness is surprising, and discovering it on horseback is an experience. The 6, 500 km of marked equestrian trails that run through the area provide many opportunities to see it. Experienced riders take off in complete freedom, while beginners and younger riders are introduced to horse riding: trotting or galoping with an instructor. For a few hours or more, regardless of your level, you will enjoy, with a """a natural Burgundy nature, where stress gives way to relaxation and conviviality.

For more info, order the map “Horse riding in Burgundy” (see p. 47).In french and english.

… by bikeBurgundy by bike is full of promise. A promise kept thanks to the “tour de Bourgogne à vélo®”, a cyclable circuit of 800 km, which puts a great deal of Burgundy châteaux and villages. But not just that: the routes of the Blue Way, the Charles le Téméraire route, also cross the area, and you can discover them at your own pace. On your way, there are plenty of service providers available to you. You can’t go wrong by choosing subscribers to the label “Accueil vélo” (Cyclists welcome): they follow a charter based on many quality criteria in terms of reception or facilities.

Industrial memory

Rich in raw materials - clay, iron ore, wood, stone and coal - and enjoying a favourable geographical location and hydrological network, Burgundy experienced an early industrial development. From north to south and from east to west, memorials, museums and industrial buildings bear witness to the work of man. From the forges of Buffon to the underground quarries of the Yonne, from the mines of Blanzy

and La Machine to the ecomuseum of Le Creusot and its sledgehammer, from the potteries of the Puisaye to the manufactures of earthenware and ceramics in Digoin and Nevers, the genius of Burgundy lives in its places of memory. Some still resonate to human activity, others, thanks to the tours led by former workers and modern re-enactments, will immerse you in the lives of the workers from the past.

Our ancestors, the GaulsSince Palaeolithic times, Burgundy has always been a haven, a place to live. In every age, men of the past have left their mark. Sprung from the depths of time, it is still visible in many archaeological sites that tell us all a story: the life of Palaeolithic hunters, the Celtic epic, the consecration of Vercingétorix, the conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar... In Bibracte, Alésia, Autun and Châtillon-sur-Seine, modern museum facilities, tours and/or educational activities and games for children and the whole family will help you step into history.

The Roman, a true storyIt was in Burgundy that the two greatest monastic reform movements of the Middle Ages were born. Cluny, then Cîteaux were, from the 10th to 12th centuries, not only spiritual centres, but also leading intellectual, artistic and even political centres in Europe. From the great abbeys and cathedrals to countless churches, the exploits of the Roman builders can be seen and discovered in Burgundy. Even today, the region is home to communities of all faiths, alive and well, who welcome pilgrims, believers and visitors: Cistercian and Benedictine abbeys and ecumenical, Orthodox and even Buddhist communities...

Close-up on…In 2014 follow in the footsteps of the Dukes of Burgundy. Ducal vineyards and mediaeval towns, '" "" "museums and other attractions await you for one eventful year.

For more info, order the document “In the footsteps of the Dukes of Burgundy”. (see p. 47) in french and english.

Splendours of the châteauxIf the châteaux of Burgundy are less famous than its Romanesque churches and its cities of art, they are *"of the relationships at once distant and strong that the province maintained with the royal power under the Ancien Régime, they are also a noble and aristocratic 9% *will be your guides there: Vauban in Bazoches-en-Morvan, Madame de Sévigné in Bussy-le-Grand and in Sully, Lamartine in Cormatin and in the houses of Mâcon, Colette in the Puisaye area, around Saint-Fargeau. Visiting these châteaux will also invite you to admire the humble work of those gardeners of the rural landscape who were, through the centuries, the farmers from all over Burgundy.

The Middle Ages, an era of great urban development, left Burgundy with a multitude of towns, small and large, which are all treasures to discover. Dijon, of course, the Ducal capital, which offers visitors a "" %city of art, dedicated to the vine and wine business. But also many cities that have sprung up by rivers: Auxonne, Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon owe their origin to Gallo-Roman ports on the Saône. Digoin, Decize and Nevers retain the memory of the boatmen of the Loire; Clamecy, Auxerre, Joigny and Sens from the log runners who supplied Paris. Not to mention the small mediaeval towns like Noyers-sur-Serein, Montréal, Semur-en-Auxois, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, Châteauneuf-en-Auxois and Brancion, which offer you the charm of their mediaeval setting.

Beaune, the Burgundy wine capital. The city’s treasure is unquestionably its Hôtel-Dieu. Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Dukes of Burgundy, it is a jewel among the hospices of the region: a true palace for the poor, it is the most eloquent example of Burgundy Flemish art. Its polychrome ceilings are famous the world over. To see also: the Collegiate Church Notre-Dame, the Church Saint-Nicolas, the Wine Museum, the countless cellars open to the public, the Bouzaize Park, the Fallot mustard factory.

The prosperity of Vézelay lasted for a number of centuries, when thousands of pilgrims, Princes, Kings, and Emperors came here to worship the relics of St. Mary Magdalene before setting off on their pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela or for the crusades. Perched on the top of the “eternal hill”, the Basilica is a masterpiece of Romanesque art and displays an extraordinary collection of sculptures. To get there, one must climb the hill, between two rows of tightly packed houses from every century, since this Mediaeval village fully occupies one side of the hill. Dijon, the regional capital, has exceptional assets: the countless monuments in its entirely preserved, largely pedestrian city centre, are a reminder that it was, under the Dukes of Burgundy, the capital of a State that encompassed both Flanders and Burgundy. To see also: the Palace of the Dukes and the States of Burgundy, the numerous museums (Fine Arts, Archaeology, Life in Burgundy, Magnin, Rude…) and the Regional Contemporary Art Fund, Saint-Bénigne Cathedral (pre-Roman crypt), the Church Notre-Dame and the Jacquemart clock, the Church Saint-Michel, the wealthy townhouses and ancient houses, the Charterhouse of Champmol and the famous Fountain of Moses (Claus Sluter), the market.

Located at the entrance to Morvan, Autun is the former capital of the Aedui. To visit the town is to truly embark on a journey through time; it has preserved important traces and buildings from the Gallo-Roman and Mediaeval eras. Its theatre was the largest of its kind in the whole of the Western part of the Roman Empire and its Mediaeval quarter offers unmissable jewels, notably the Saint-Lazare Cathedral (12th

century), a remarkable example of Clunisian art, whose sculptures by Gilbertus are masterpieces of Romanesque art. To see also: the Janus Temple, the Rolin Museum, the Saint-André and Arroux Gates, the Couhard Stone.

The silhouette of the Roche de Solutré surprises for its unusual appearance from the region’s hillside landscape: like a sphinx amid the vineyards, it seems to be spying on the visitor. Do not think twice about climbing up to it; the view from the top is breath taking. Indisputably one of Burgundy’s most famous archaeological sites, it has known occupation by various Palaeolithic civilisations. The discovery of 100,000 horse skeletons at its foot gave rise to the legend of the hunt into the abyss. To see also: the Museum of Pre-History (audio guided tours). La Charité-sur-Loire is a charming mediaeval town on the banks of the Loire, surrounded by ramparts. “Eldest Daughter of Cluny”, it has been a major milestone for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela since the Middle Ages. It was the pilgrims who gave the name to this important X monks at the Abbey for charity. The beautifully restored priory church could hold up to 5,000 of the faithful. The historic heart of the city is home to many booksellers and book craftsmen (bookbinders, calligraphers, illustrators, designers, publishers, printers...) and there are fairs, markets and events connected to books during the year. To see also: the banks of the Loire, the nearby Charitois vineyard.

Joigny, described as the gateway to Burgundy, is just 1.5 hours from Paris. Its historic centre rises in tiers above the right bank of the Yonne and is sure to delight. Enjoy a lovely stroll, exploring its narrow windy streets and the remains of the city walls, continuing as far as the Côte Saint-Jacques vineyards, a little further downstream. The old parish churches are located in the middle of three historic districts. This château, located in the Morvan, owes its fame to Marshall Vauban. He acquired the old medieval fortress from the 12th century, as a gift from Louis XIV after the capture of the city of Maastricht, and he furnished it according to his tastes and needs. The main innovation was the construction of a large gallery overlooking the valley, where engineering services were installed working under the auspices of the Marshal. The Morvan, a vast granite massif in the heart of Burgundy…The territory, which boasts a strong sense of identity, comprises a variety of natural spaces: Steep peaks, rounded hills, forests and copses, damp meadows, lakes and ponds, rivers

and streams. This area, also known as the “isle of Morvan” or the “mountain of Burgundy,” has managed to retain its authentic feel, combining respect for traditional agricultural practices, with emphasis on the preservation of the natural environment, historic and spiritual heritage, hospitality and friendship … some of the many reasons for which it was awarded the label of Regional Nature Park in 1970. Cluny Abbey 19.1

Located along the Saône and in the Art and History Country “between Cluny and Tournus”, the town already has a distinctly southern atmosphere. The towers of the abbey Saint-Philibert emerge from the patchwork of pink-tiled roofs of the town’s houses. Built at the turn of the year 1, 000, this abbey is one of the oldest Romanesque sanctuaries in France. The Abbey is not the only treasure of the city; the Hotel-Dieu is also of great interest. To see also: the Perrin de Puycousin Museum of Burgundy, the Greuze Museum housed in a wing of the old Hôtel-Dieu, which also has a hospital museum.

Tournus Abbey 19.2

Located in the valleys of the Saône river and its tributary the Grosne, the countryside is framed by two internationally renowned Abbeys, Cluny and Tournus. Famous for its profusion of Romanesque churches and feudal fortresses, including Brancion, it has many other attractions, including wine. Along the wine route, be sure to make some time for a wine-tasting in a cave in the charming wine villages: their heritage (garden sheds - “cadolles”, drystone walls and traditional houses) is full of charm. Conveniently located near the motorways between Paris, Lyon and Dijon, it guarantees a total change of scenery.

During the 12th century, the Cistercian order, a movement which sought to revive the original spirit of monastic simplicity, was spreading throughout Europe. Fontenay Abbey, founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard, offers the perfect picture of what a great Cistercian abbey was like. This ideal “city”, isolated in its woodland enclosure, in the heart of the “Auxois” Art and History Country, includes everything the monks needed for the work of the mind and body: the cloister, the church, the chapter house, the scriptorium, the kitchen, the forge (Europe’s oldest) and the old abbey palace. The buildings are still intact after more than eight centuries of history.

The “Auxois” Art and History Country 20

In the heart of the “Auxois” Art and History _""town of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois still appears to keep watch over the road from Dijon to Autun. After the Burgundy Canal, its silhouette reveals one of the most beautiful views in the area. Its fortress is today one of the last testimonies to Burgundy’s military architecture of the 14th

century. Today, the beautiful mediaeval houses, decorated with gables and turrets of stairs, often pierced with large windows, still retain their prestige behind the climbing roses. They bear witness to the commercial purpose of the village at the end of the Middle Ages, in the heart of the former “breadbasket” of Burgundy.

The château and village of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois 20.2

From the hills of the Auxois to the forests of the Morvan, a region extends that is renowned for its gastronomic riches and its particularly prestigious heritage. The historical and archaeological evidence is remarkable: it was here that Vercingetorix was defeated by Julius Caesar; that the Seine has its source in its natural preserved setting; and that the naturalist Buffon created his ideal workers’ town... Very well served by the Paris-Dijon TGV and the A6 motorway, that make it less than an hour from Paris, this “country” is the ideal destination for weekends and holidays.

Anis de Flavigny Manufacture

Surrounded by walls, the village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain seems straight out of the Middle Ages, overlooking the lush greenery of the “Auxois” Art and History Country. Its winding streets lined with beautiful houses from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, maintained with great care, are there to be explored. The scent of anise guides the visitor to the old Carolingian abbey, one of the 1st founded in Burgundy. Craftsmen are still making here the famous small round, white and " [ from blackcurrant to violet, they perpetuate a tradition that appeared under St. Louis. The recipe has remained unchanged since the 16th century.

Dominating the landscape of the “Auxois” Art and History Country, the statue of Vercingetorix indicates the site of Alesia. It was here in 52 BC that the battle took place that enabled Julius Caesar to bring all of Gaul into the Roman Empire. The Alesia MuséoParc, a new interpretative centre of the site, has recently opened. Dedicated to the siege of Alesia and the myth of the Gallic origins of France, it allows the visitor to see the point of view of both the besiegers and the besieged. Years of excavations have unearthed a typical Gallo-Roman city which should ultimately be connected to an archaeological museum recounting the life and culture of its successive inhabitants.

Château Saint-Hugues

Paray-le-Monial combines architectural and spiritual heritage. The monastic town developed in the shadow of a Clunisian priory and, since the 17th century, has been an important place of pilgrimage dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The Emmanuel Community welcomes thousands of pilgrims for retreats and workshops. It is in Paray-] 9 Clunisian architecture is to be found, and it is here that we can get an idea of what Cluny was like. The basilica of Paray-le-Monial 21.1

Heritage lovers should not miss discovering the ancient capital of Brionnais: there’s a thousand years of history here! Standing at the top of a promontory, surrounded by a rich land of vineyards and fruit trees, the feudal château Saint-Hugues is one of the oldest in Burgundy and offers a breathtaking view over the vineyards and mountains of Forez. Its collegiate church Saint-Hilaire in the “Upper Town”, is in Clunisian style and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful churches in the Brionnais region. To see also: the court auditorium, the 17th century salt store, canonial houses, the chapel of Saint-Martin-la-Vallée.

The village of Semur-en-Brionnais 21.2

Located in the extreme southwest of the region, this area is synonymous with a wealth of heritage and landscape. The landscape, all in wooded hills, is the birthplace of the Charolais breed of cattle, renowned for the quality of its meat. As for heritage, it is very dense, multi-faceted and abundant: towns and villages full of character, museums, châteaux and fortresses. But its main attraction is undoubtedly the multitude and the variety of Romanesque churches styles that dot the landscape. A little away from roads, this “country” is the ideal destination for a relaxing stay, on a boat along the canals, canoeing on the Loire, or biking along the greenway...

Nestled in a bend of the Serein, Noyers-sur-Serein is the image of the small market town from the Middle Ages, and shows its two faces, of a mediaeval town and of a winemaking town. It can be visited on foot and unfolds in a series of picturesque squares: the squares of Petite-Etape-aux-Vins, Marché-au-Blé and Grenier-à-Sel, together with the beautiful wooden framed facades of 15th century houses and the cobbled streets lined with arcades of half-timbered houses, recall the heyday of the village’s farming and commercial past. The church, which marks the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance, is one of the highlights of the trip.

In the 11th century, Cluny Abbey spread its teachings throughout Europe and, thanks to the great religious momentum, many churches were then built. Many of them replicated the architectural principles of Cluny: octagonal towers, chevets with squat apses... In Burgundy, it was in the heart of Charolais and Brionnais that "positioned at the top of villages or nestled in the middle of farmland, there are more than 100 such Romanesque churches and chapels. The Roman roads group them together and the Romanesque basilica of Paray-le-Monial is the starting point for 3 circuits of discovery.

The Burgundy Canal, 242 km long, links the Yonne and Saône valleys, and follows the Armançon valley before launching an assault on the “threshold” of Burgundy, where it crosses to Pouilly-en-Auxois through a 3, 300 m tunnel: spectacular! Yonne side: rolling countryside, dotted with places to visit, including the Renaissance châteaux of Tanlay and Ancy-le-Franc; Saône side: a wild and wooded route. To see also: the aqueducts of Pont-d’Ouche, the towns and villages of Montbard, Saint-Florentin and Brienon-sur-Armançon, “CapCanal” in Pouilly-en-Auxois.

The Burgundy Canal 23.1

This narrow, windy, 112 km long canal provides a picturesque route through the region. It cuts through the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise vineyards, across the green plains of the Charolais region and after traversing Paray-le-Monial, a shrine for Romanesque art and a famous pilgrimage destination, reaches Digoin. The Seille is a tributary of the Saône that you can follow as far as Louhans, in the heart of Bresse Bourguigonne. To see also: The Montceau-les-Mines draw-bridge, the aqueducts on the rigole d’Arroux at Digoin and Chagny.

The Canal du Centre (and the Seille) 23.2

It is in Burgundy that the watershed is found between the basins of the 3 main French rivers: the Seine, the Loire and the Rhone. In order for them to meet, a series of canals were built in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. No less than seven in fact, together with the navigable rivers Saône, Yonne and Seille, they constitute a unique network and make the region a paradise for boating. More than just waterways, they tell their story and the odyssey of water transport. Along the water, the unique heritage punctuates the journey: staircase locks such as at Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses on the Briare canal, manual tunnels, aqueducts...

The château of Ancy-le-Franc was built in the 16th century according to plans by the Italian architect Serlio, for Count Antoine de Clermont, a favourite at the court of Henry II, and decorated by Burgundy artists in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Its wide range of murals offer a direct rival to Fontainebleau. Well and alive, this château offers a full entertainment programme: the “Musicancy” music festival, cooking classes, exhibitions, children’s entertainment... To see also: the richly decorated rooms, the park, the English and French gardens (45 ha).

Ancy-le-Franc Château 24

Located in the Armançon valley, Tanlay Château is one of the most beautiful Renaissance houses in Burgundy. This architectural ensemble from the 16th and 17th centuries captivates with its atmosphere and memories of a turbulent page in the history of France that it evokes: Admiral Coligny, Lord of the Manor in the 16th century, was accustomed to gather here the other leaders of the Protestant League. Every summer, the outbuildings of the château are used as venues for contemporary art exhibitions of international standing.

Northern Burgundy, near Paris, has many Renaissance châteaux. These houses bear witness to the links - artistic as well as political - between the Crown and the province. To see also: Châteaux of Meaulnes, Saint-Fargeau, Ancy-le-Franc and Tanlay, …

FAs in… “Family”

Burgundy is a huge playground, which gives you every reason to discover it... and return with the whole family: accessible, attractive, fun, for sports or for nature, for touring or for workshops, the possibilities are endless! Leisure parks, zoos, tourist trains, excursion boats, tree climbing, cyclo-rails, swimming in the midst of nature in lakes and ponds or in pools with the water slides and games of aquatic centres... From the banks of the Yonne in the extreme south of the Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy is fun for the whole family.

The labels

The labels underline the commitment of Burgundy to the quality of your family holiday: our partners in the Departments of Yonne (Famil’Yonne) and Saône-et-Loire (Kids Adventures) have selected and labelled accommodation, activities and tours that are particularly suitable for children and families.

JAs in… “Jardins” (Gardens)

The “Remarkable Garden” label indicates gardens whose design, plants and maintenance are at a remarkable level, whether private or public, protected or not as monuments or special sites. Every year, on the 1st weekend of June, they open their doors for 3 days as part of the national event “Discover the gardens”, an opportunity for you to meet the owners and the gardeners, and attend the activities they offer: workshops, exhibitions, concerts… In Burgundy, there are 23 such gardens and parks: the Chaux Gardens in Alligny-en-Morvan (58), the Zéphyr Gardens in Anglure-sous-Dun (71), garden of château Bussy-Rabutin at Bussy-le-Grand (21), the Parkland of château d’Arcelot in Arceau (21), the gardens of Barbirey-sur-Ouche château (21), the Vegetable garden at the Berzé-le-Châtel Château (71), Saint-Léger Park in Champeau-en-Morvan (21), Park and Garden of the Château of Châtillon-en-Bazois (58), Park of the Mancion of Chaugny (58), the Forgeneuve garden in Coulanges-les-Nevers (58), the gardens of Château de Drée in Curbigny (71), the X_> of La Borde at Leugny (89), Limanton Château gardens (58), Fontenay Abbey Gardens in Marmagne (21), garden of the Château de la Serré at Mesmont (21) Château de Chaumont gardens in Oyé (71), Château de Digoine gardens in Palinges (71), the Tanning Mill Park in Sens (89), Château de Sully park & garden (71), 5 Roses Garden in Talant (21), Talmay Château garden (21), Thorigny Château Park in Thorigny-sur-Oreuse (89).

Many other gardens, including those in towns (Colombière park and Darcy gardens in Dijon, Moulin Liron Park in Paray-le-Monial, Bouzaize Park in Beaune, Botanical Gardens in Chalon-sur-Saône…) deserve a detour, to go for a stroll or have a rest. Thematic, educational and leisure events are to be found at all times of the year - don’t hesitate to stop there. The Burgundy Association of Parks and Gardens publishes a small annual guide detailing the attractions at each place, their opening hours and the highlights of the year not to be missed.
