For years film-making has beenconsidered a gamble whose fatecant be predicted. But accuratepredictions made by a student ofIIM-Indore before the release ofShahrukh Khans Ra.One indicatethat there may be after all a mag-ic formula that guarantees successon the box office.

On October 20, KhyatiMadaan, a second-year studentof the IIMs post-graduate pro-gramme, had forecast thatRa.One will get the biggest open-ing in the history of the cinema.

The prediction, reported byDNA,was based on a formula thatMadaan had derived on the ba-sis of management principles.

And her prediction has hitbullseye. In spite of being ripped

apart by majority of critics andviewers, Ra.One grossed `96-crorein its opening weekend, the high-est ever for an Indian film. It beatSalman Khans Bodyguard by al-most `10 crore. I had predictedthat the films net opening wouldbe`95 crore, says Madaan.

The IIM student has based herformula on factors that includethe combined equity of the leadpair, the films director and theproduction house. The other fac-tors that decide the outcome in-clude the genre fit ofthe film andits stars, the competition at thetime of release, the hype gener-

ated by the films marketing be-fore release and the reaction soonafter release.

So, what can Bollywood learnfrom Ra.Ones success? To beginwith, have a star cast that is pop-

ular among viewers, spend a loton pre-release publicity, releasethe film when people are in amood to spend (the film hit thescreens before Diwali).

In a letter to Air India CMDRohit Nandan, these pilots have said theyare compelled to seek a no-objectioncertificate from the airline so that theycould seek employment elsewhere.

The threat of mass resignation of
