CinemaAttic, in association with Scotland’s Catalan Centre, is proud to present Scotland’s 1st Catalan Film Festival.

This initiative stems from our endeavour to organise pioneering festivals around the UK and it has come into fruition thanks to the interest of Scotland’s Catalan Centre to promote Catalan culture through its contemporary cinema. Not by chance, in the course of the last five years there has been a significant rise in the profile of Catalan film outside of Spain, gaining recognition at various international festivals including representing Spain at the Academy Awards.

With a programme of activities including nine days of films in five venues across Edinburgh, our focus is cinema and just cinema. By this we want to clarify that we hold no political agenda in relation to the staging of this festival; rather, our commitment is only to open up new ways of understanding life and approaching cinema. We believe Catalunya at this time to be a leading example for the way films are produced and promoted. The friendly nature of the institutions that look after Catalan cinema have facilitated greatly the completion of this festival. Are not cinema and societies inextricably linked? This is our particular homage to a Catalan film industry that may ultimately be reflecting the society behind it.

Saying this, we are keen to present masterpieces of the like of Pa Negre (Black Bread, 2010); Escuchando al Juez Garzón (Listening to Judge Garzón, 2011) or El silenci abans de Bach (The Silence Before Bach, 2007) alongside the latest achieve-ments of Catalan cinema´s new talents divided into three exclu-sive nights of short films.

Every film is subtitled in English and will only be screened once. This is a rare opportunity to approach one of the most significant art forms of a vibrant culture, aware as we are that the connecting power of the latter is essential for creating open and democratic societies.

Hopefully by engaging with Scotland´s 1st Catalan Film Festival you can share our passion too.

I am delighted, as president of the Scotland’s Catalan Centre, to welcome you to the 1st Catalan Film Festival in Scotland. Among its core foundations, the SCC has the aim of promoting the Catalan culture and language in Scotland and of becoming a bridge between these two nations and cultures.

Cinema is one of the most important cultural expressions in any society; thus, the selection of films and short films included in this programme aims to represent the diverse range of styles and topics that are present in Catalan cinematography.

This festival is an excellent opportunity for Scots and people from other countries to learn what Catalan cinema has to offer to the world. Catalonia is indeed a small nation, but that does not prevent Catalan artists from participating in universal debates.

Spanish Human Rights investiga-tor Baltasar Garzón was convicted in February 2012 by Spanish su-preme court for his enquiries over the systematic repression of Franco’s regime alongside his will to uncover the biggest corruption case in modern Spain involving, among others, the Prime Minister’ Mariano Rajoy’s People’s party.

Goya Awards winner 2012 for Best Documentary, Coixet’s film represents a unique opportunity to approach a case that rose as much anger as attention from worldwide human rights groups and the Unit-ed Nations.

The event will open up with an in-troduction to the consequences of Spanish Civil War in modern Spain by Edinburgh-based author Daniel Gray (Homage to Caledonia: Scot-land and the Spanish Civil War).

A very special night of cinema, hope and life with another docu-mentary that will focus this time on popular leader for the people of Spain Pasqual Maragall -once former mayor of Barcelona and president of Catalunya- in his ac-tual struggle to fight Alzheimer’s disease.

‘Bicycle’, ‘spoon’, ‘apple’ are the three words most used in the medical research for short memory and mark the film and a disease affecting 35 million peo-ple today. Not to be missed or forgotten.

Established in 2009 by Cata-lan Academy of Cinema, Gaudí Awards are Catalonia´s national film awards -a reunion of the best of Catalan cinema. Granted with international recognition, some of the films that will conform the Gaudí Awards sessions have only be seen before at festivals of the like of Biennale di Vene-zia, Sundance, Seminci or the IDFF Amsterdam. Gaudí Awards block I will not be screened again in Scotland so we highly recom-mend you to come along and be part of an experience intended to support the quality of peripheral cinemas.

L’enxaneta is the little boy or girl, aged between five and ten, who summits Catalonia thirty-me-tres-high human castles. The Castells were declared Master-pieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNES-CO in November 2010 and repre-sent one of the most spectacular traditions in Europe nowadays.

This 80’ film by Paulí Subirá -pro-duced by Catalonian institution TV3- is a deeply moving docu-mentary that portraits the fears, will to succeed and teamwork of a very unique cultural form...in 3D!

Its screening at Edinburgh Cineworld is a must-seen rarity.

The festival will close at the venue that has lately best represented our ethos -unique selection of fi lms to plural audiences in unusual pop-up cinemas-.

For the night at the singular basement of La Tasca Charlotte Square we will curate a selection of the best of the festival plus three unseen films. What is more, attendees will have the opportu-nity to approach the best Spanish beer thanks to our collaboration with Estrella Damm, as well as a very exclusive closing party for the all the loyal!

Agustí Villaronga’s latest master-piece is an atmospheric piece of storytelling of post Civil War Cat-alonia heightened with exquisite central performances.

The film won nonetheless thir-teen Gaudí Awards, nine Goya Awards, including Best film, Best director and Best adapted screenplay. It was selected as the Spanish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards being the first Catalan-language film to accomplish so.

A real piece of cinematic art that will be screened for the first time in Scotland thanks to collabora-tion of Cameo Edinburgh.

Real-life drama and documen-tary-style filmmaking blend with surrealistic whimsy in director Pere Portabella’s passionate look at the ties between classical music and the construction of contemporary Europe.

Not by chance, Pere Portabella has been largely regarded as one of the strongest authors of Catalan cinema par excellence for what was given the Honorific Gaudí Award for his cinematographic career in June 2012.

Arguably, the finest film of this Catalan film season.
