Design Achievement:The Los Angeles Coliseum was built in 1923 and the USC Trojans played their first game there on Oct. 6, 1923. Since then it’s also hosted two Olympics, two Super Bowls, a World Series, a Papal Mass, visits by three U.S. Presidents, and scores of additional sporting and social events. DLR Group is leading design of a $270-million renovation and modernization to honor the tradition and heritage of the historic facility while creating a true game-day experience for all USC fans and deliver a decided home field advantage for the Trojan football program. A focal point of the modernization is the design and construction of a new suite and press deck on the south side of the stadium. This will add multiple suites, loge boxes, club seats, press box, and a new concourse. This new suite deck will be inserted seamlessly into the existing stadium bowl. The Los Angeles Coliseum is one of four historic athletic stadiums designated as National Historic Landmarks by the National Park Service. DLR Group’s design will retain the Coliseum’s official Landmark status while also being sensitive to the place the Coliseum plays in the culture of Los Angeles and the United States. The modernized Los Angeles Coliseum will remain the historic Coliseum in look, texture, and impression and a key design intent is to faithfully restore the iconic peristyle to more closely resemble the stadium’s original 1923 design.

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Modernization

Page 17: DLR Group Sports Portfolio

Scope Summary:The modernization of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum encompasses well over 1,000,000 total SF. The improvements to the stadium seating and aisles will reduce seating capacity from 93,607 to approximately 77,500. The modernization plans call for replacing every seat in the stadium and installing handrails throughout; adding aisles and repairing steps to enhance safety, widening seats and increasing leg room in many sections; adding a new structure on the south side of the stadium that includes suites, loge boxes, club seats, a new concourse, and a new press box; adding new concessions stands; upgrading entry concourses, installing new field and stadium lighting, improving audio and video with two new large screens relocated to the east end of the stadium; updating Wi-Fi throughout the venue; and replacing the electrical, and mechanical and plumbing systems to meet current standards. The design and construction is projected to begin after the 2017 USC football season and be completed for the 2019 football home opener. The USC Trojans will play the 2018 season in the Coliseum during the renovation. DLR Group provided master planning, architecture, and interior design services

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Design Achievement:At the center of the University of Southern California (USC) campus lies the heart of Trojan athletic tradition – Heritage Hall. Opened in 1971, Heritage Hall served as the home of USC's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics for more than 40 years. DLR Group's design for the modernization enables USC to celebrate both the rich history and future excellence of its athletic tradition. The 2-story main lobby of Heritage Hall is now a light-filled Hall of Champions featuring a Spirit of Troy exhibit space celebrating the multiple NCAA Championships, Heisman Trophy winners, Olympians, legendary coaches, student athletes, and achievements of USC's 21 athletics programs. The lower level, accessible only to student athletes and athletic department staff, features a lounge for Women of Troy student-athletes, a new rowing room with 35 indoor ergometers, a new golf simulation lab with a virtual indoor driving range and a 6-hole putting green, and other spaces that support student-athletes and greatly assist in recruiting.

Scope Summary:The scope of work for this project entailed a completed renovation of the existing 70,000 SF building that relocated existing services and provided new spaces for athlete programs. The 2-story museum lobby and athletic department offices on the first and second floors were renovated to feature floor to ceiling windows and views to practice fields and campus. The renovation added offices for USC athletic administrators and coaches, a sports performance center, and a dedicated television studio with a direct feed to the Pac-12 Network. The addition of skylights throughout the corridors and internal spaces of the lower level allow natural light to penetrate the space. An outdoor plaza was enhanced with decorative paving, a fountain, and on-grade skylights. An existing ancillary building was converted to a conference room and lounge, complete with a catering kitchen. DLR Group provided planning, architecture, and interior design services.

Client: University of Houston

Location: Houston, TX

Design Achievement:The new University of Houston Stadium is designed to elevate the Cougar football program and provide an authentic game day experience for fans and student-athletes. The DLR Group and Page design team altered the orientation of the new stadium to align with adjacent campus buildings and offer clear views of the iconic downtown Houston skyline. The building exterior is comprised of two separate elements that work together to create a distinct personality for the stadium. The base is formed with a series of rectilinear forms that house conditioning and athletic support spaces. The ground level aligns seamlessly with the overall campus grid and uses familiar materials. Rising above the base is the second thematic element, dubbed the Cougar Cage, a permeable, patterned metal wrap that encloses the stadium. This unique facade uses striking red thematic elements within the wrap to convey movement and clear way-finding cues to direct fans to stadium entrances.

Client: City of Lincoln

Location: Lincoln, NE

Design Achievement:The centerpiece of a new $340 million development located adjacent to Lincoln's famed historic Haymarket District, Pinnacle Bank Arena provides the city—and the entire state of Nebraska — with a top quality multipurpose venue that provides patrons with an amazing fan experience. DLR Group's design for the facility takes full advantage of its site by featuring a multi-story glass-fronted lobby that not only gives passers-by a peek at the activity taking place inside on all levels of the building, but also allows patrons inside the facility to look out to the new development, the Haymarket, downtown Lincoln and Nebraska's famed state capitol beyond. Designed around the ability to host University of Nebraska men's and women's basketball games in the most intense atmosphere possible, the venue also easily accommodates concerts, ice events, high school state tournaments and nearly every other event-type imaginable.

Client: University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Location: Charlotte, NC

Design Achievement:When the University of North Carolina at Charlotte decided to start a new football program from scratch the rare opportunity to plan and design a new home stadium was given to the design team of DLR Group and Jenkins Peer. The design team carefully analyzed numerous site opportunities, orientation options and phasing strategies while focusing on how to create a dynamic game day experience that would quickly develop into new traditions for players and fans alike. The design of Jerry Richardson Stadium delivers a full complement of player and spectator amenities found at the best stadiums around the country, while nestled in the heart of campus and effectively blending in with the existing traditional architectural style seen throughout.

Client: NRG Energy Inc.

Location: Landover, MD

Design Achievement:DLR Group teamed with Fortune 500 company NRG Energy to design a large-scale solar array at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins. The design approach for this project looks at the future of renewable energy application and production: solar systems must evolve to be more than panels on a roof. DLR Group's design uses the working solar system as architecture that becomes part of the aesthetic of the stadium, engaging fans to enhance the game experience. The solar systems use photovoltaics and features prominent displays of solar panels in and around the stadium to raise awareness of the commitment by NRG and the Redskins to renewable energy. A branded NRG entry gate into the stadium, a dynamic LED lighting system illuminating the facade of a pedestrian entrance ramp, and a 30-foot tall silhouette of a quarterback dubbed "Solar Man" are all part of the working solar system.

Client: Sarpy County, Nebraska

Location: Papillion, NE

Design Achievement:When the City of Omaha decided to build a new downtown baseball stadium to host the College World Series (CWS), it decided to demolish Rosenblatt Stadium, the former home of the CWS and the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Kansas City Royal's AAA team. DLR Group's design for the new facility fulfills the Storm Chasers' and Sarpy County's goals to create a more intimate environment near the core suburban fan base of young families. As part of a planned mixed-use development, the ballpark anchors a mixture of hospitality, retail, office, residential, and recreational uses within an atmosphere that provides an unparalleled fan experience.

Client: University of Oregon

Location: Eugene, OR

Design Achievement:When the University of Oregon decided to resurrect its baseball program after a 30-year absence from competition, DLR Group was selected to design a stadium that would continue the University's commitment to top athletic facilities. A site was selected adjacent to the famed Autzen Stadium football complex. While this provided a high profile location, it also proved to be a challenge for designers, who wanted to ensure that PK Park would stand alone with its own signature presence on campus. The solution was to maximize vertical elements and natural materials to create a sense of place. Stylistically, the facility reflects the culture of athletics at the University of Oregon and provides an aesthetic that is particular to the game of baseball in the Pacific Northwest region. A steep seating bowl gives fans the feeling of being on top of play and vertical banner elements along the concourse add an energetic game day atmosphere.

Scope Summary:PK Park features 3,000 fixed seats and a total capacity of 4,000 fans. A picnic plaza and the Fowl Territory Party Plaza add to the fan experience. Press facilities and eight suites were included in the design on the upper level and are shielded by a dynamic canopy that covers most of the seating. A synthetic turf playing field keeps the field ready during Eugene's frequent rain showers. A 19,320 SF player development area includes locker rooms and a player lounge. DLR Group provided architecture and interior design services.

Client: Louisiana State University

Location: Baton Rouge, LA

Design Achievement:When the moment came for LSU to replace Alex Box Stadium, its venerable home of nearly 60 years, athletic department officials selected DLR Group who designed a new venue capable of holding the program's tradition of baseball excellence. Partnering with Grace & Hebert Architects, DLR Group designers committed to melding the history of LSU baseball into a new design that conveys the glory and mystique of Tiger baseball and the special relationship the program shares with its fans. The playing field, player development areas, and coaching offices are unmatched, and a raised concourse provides clear views of the action to all fans. The vertical nature of the seating bowl, tower elements, and signature entry stairs create impressive entry sequences into the facility. The LSU color scheme is used liberally throughout the interior and exterior of the stadium to tie into the overall character of the campus and LSU athletics brand.
