VOLLEYBALL

2011 Braham Volleyball records: 8-1 Great River Conference (tie- 1st place), 17-10 overall, Lost in first round of Section 5A tourney

2011 Lineup (Head Coach Britne Engelking describes): SR Sarah Tomlinson -RH: Very strong hitter and blocker. She will also go all the way around (great serve, passes well). JR Kayla Nickles -OH: Her hitting has improved a lot over the last year. She will also be playing all the way around. She has a very hard serve and is very quick in the back row. FR Carley Lynch -Setter: Carley has improved a large amount, as well. She could be one of our attackers this year but will be the team’s setter as she has speed, court aware-ness and a great set of hands. SR Dani Braund -MH: Last year Dani was a utility player. She played back row and MH. This year she will be going all the way around as a middle. Her passing and speed on the block will help the team immensely this year. FR Angela Bendickson - OH: She has great court awareness and is also very quick. SR Alyssa Thom-MH: She can hit the ball well and find holes on the opponent’s court. She has a lethal serve, as well. SR Bella Williams -libero/DS: Bella has put in a lot of time at the gym throughout the summer and is very scrappy in the back row. JR Stormy Husnick -DS/libero: Stormy is a great passer and will add to the speed of our defense. JR Grace Zierden - Utility: Grace is a true utility player as she knows all of the positions and is ready to go at any point in time. She may also play OH as the season progress-es. JR Nicole Bacon-OH: Nikki is one that could step up this year and also see the court.

Positives for 2012 season: Coach Engelking: “I have said this in the past about many teams, but I have never meant it as strongly as I do about the team that I am fortunate enough to coach this year: The girls have heart, integrity and a true sense of the value of what it means to be a ‘team.’ I am looking forward to every practice and match, no matter the outcome, as I know that these girls are going to give it 100 percent every time they step on the court.”

Great River and Section 5A Outlooks: “In the GRC, Rush City and East Central and Onamia have always been com-petitive. I see these teams as being some of the toughest competition we have in our conference. “Nevis clinched the section title last year with BBE, Sebeka and Rush City all making it to the quarterfinals. These teams will be strong again this year, and when the playoffs start, I expect our team to be playing top-notch volleyball and be a threat in our section.”

2011 Cambridge Christian Volleyball records: 7-6 Christian Athletic League regular season, 10-8 overall, 3rd place CAL Finals tourney

2012 Lineup: Returners– SRS Caitlin Wal-burg - libero/DS/OH, Seble Doble - OH, Shelby Doble - setter/RH, JRS Kellie Pedersen - M/OH, SOPHS Kim Walburg - Setter. New Warriors – JRS Karly Wiek - MH (transfer from Milaca), Nicole Cegla- RH, Annika Fosse - RH, Kyleigh Olson - DS, FR Kristin Bergman - MH.

Positives for 2012 season Head Coach Rachel Newton: “The girls are fired up to take the championship this year, so they’re pushing themselves every practice and working with intensity to accomplish that goal. Newer players are adapting well, and the veterans are perfecting skills and learning tougher of-

fensive plays to increase our team’s competi-tiveness and court presence. This should be an exciting season for the Warriors.”

CAL Outlook: “Teams to beat are Christian Life (returning champs, especially with star player Anna Larson) and RAHS (specifically because of their height, which increases their kill percentage and blocking ability). My goal is to win the championship this year! While we lost a key player last year (grad Annie KinCannon), we have many returning varsity players and some great new additions, which I think will boost our team’s overall record and our post-season play. “In last season’s CAL 3rd-place match, we beat Mountain Lake Christian in four games; we lost to them during the regular season but pulled off a hard-fought win to finish the season strongly.”

Warriors aim to climb CAL ladder in 2012

2012 Cambridge Christian Volleyball team: (Front, l-r): Shelby Doble, Caitlin Walburg, (Row 1) Seble Doble, Annika Fosse, Lydia Melberg, Corbin Doble, (Row 2) Clarissa Filetti, Kim Walburg, Kaitlin Svoboda, Roman Schmaltz, Kaydee Gleplay, (Row 3) Coach Rachel Newton, Nicole Cegla, Bailey Jones, Karly Wiek, Kristin Bergman, Kellie Pedersen, Kyleigh Olson.

Depth provided by new varsity members Anna Sunder-man (Backstroke) and Megan Berg (Freestyles). The Blue-jackets will need to make up the 12 members lost to gradu-ation, including the team’s top placer at sections– freestyler Katie McCaan.

Positives for 2011 season Head Coach Jennifer Olson: “This year’s team is very self-motivated. They come to practice eager to learn and to work hard. I think the girls are going to have a fun year full of personal-best swims and dives.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Olson predicts St.Michael-Albertville and Monticello to be the toughest teams to beat in the conference this season. Monticello is on a great run in central-Minnesota girls swim-ming, finishing 5th at the Class A State meet last autumn. Coach Olson: “In Section 7AA, Andover and Duluth East look to be very strong this season, based on returners from last year’s section meet. Forest Lake, the defending champ, graduated a lot of talent, including the top three divers in the section.”

2011 Cambridge-Isanti Volleyball records: 1-5 Mississippi 8 Conference (5th place), 13-15 overall, Lost in second round of Section 7AAA tourney

2012 Returners: SRS Kylie Baas - Setter/Rightside Hitter, Alexis Landherr - Middle Hitter, Emily Sorgert - Outside hitter, SOPHS Sydney Larkin - Setter, Korbyn Felde - OH, Abigayle Glotzbach - Defensive Specialist/OH, Greta Holt - RH. The Bluejackets will be working to fill the shoes of four key gradu-ates, including leading scorer Julia Walfoort (now playing for Southwest State). Baas is an experienced four-year varsity member who brings great leadership this autumn.

Positives for 2011 season Head Coach Vicki Courts: “This team works hard and is full of positive energy. Being in the gym with them is awesome. We will have a great season.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAA Outlooks: Buffalo and St. Michael-Albertville were the M-8 co-champions last season. Coach Courts foresees those two teams to be tough again in 2012, along with Rogers, Big Lake and Monticello. “We play each team twice this season in the conference. It will be tough; they all have great coaches.” In Section 7AAA, Andover (28-6) rolled to its fifth-straight championship before finishing in 3rd place at ‘AAA’ State. Coach Courts predicts Anoka, Duluth East, Elk River, Chisago Lakes and St. Francis could also bring strong teams to the courts this season.

Positives for 2012 season: The Bombers are building off a memorable 2011 which saw them grasp a conference champi-onship and win the 7A title before falling to eventual Class A runners-up Mahnomen in the first round of State. This season, Braham changes to the seven-school GPFA Red Conference but moves back into Section 7AA. Head Coach Shawn Kuhnke: “The kids have been working extremely hard and are very coachable. We’ve got some older guys doing a nice job stepping into unfamiliar leadership roles, as well as some younger kids that are stepping up and learning very quickly and pushing for some varsity time. “At Saturday’s scrimmage, one of the good things we saw is we have several good athletes on our team. The athletic abilities at our skill positions has us in good shape on offense. Defensively, we need to catch up quickly to where our offense is at.”

Great Polar Red and Section 7AA Outlooks Coach Kuhnke: “Cook County will be very good in the new conference, which is made up of the smaller schools in the GPFA. We saw the Vi-kings up in Duluth this summer– wow! Deer River and Ogilvie will be very tough, too. “Definitely the team to beat in the Section 7AA will once again be Moose Lake-Willow River. They are returning most of their team from a year ago when they finished as runners-up in Class AA. I believe Hinckley-Finlayson will be very good, too.”

Positives for 2011 season Head Coach Mike Galligan: “This squad has some of the best leadership qualities I’ve seen in a high school team. That leadership will carry us through the arduous weeks of a challenging schedule in a highly demanding physical and mental sport like soccer. Our defense is anchored by Justine Larson in the Goal; she’s a real fighter with terrific range and reach, she’ll be backed up by SR Sierra Rowan. Support comes in the form of Thessa Daniels – a tenacious sweeper, flanked by Alex Benjamin and Hannah Prigge at outside defenders, along with newcomer SO Jana Lindvall. They are all talented and

intelligent players and should provide a lot of interference to spoil our opponent’s attacks. “The Midfield will center around savvy veteran Emily Moore and the playmaking action she brings to the center mid position. The midfield is also where we find the depth of our team concentrated with many athletic and experienced returning regulars who saw a lot of minutes last year. Exhibiting the stamina and skill needed at outside mid this year will be Nicole Morgan, Michelle Cook, Jazzy Erickson, Chelsey Boettcher, Kallan Hartnett, Cassie Galligan, Kali Dawson, Emma Schoenecker and newcomer FR Bree Erick-son. “Relentless attack is what we are looking for from our striker personnel, led by Megan Dawson– a technically skilled and poised junior, supported by the explosive speed and shooting of Lindsey Elmquist, Melyssa Var-soke and newcomer JR Carlynn Galeazzi.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Galligan: “The I-94 corridor will be tough as always in the Mississippi 8 this year including St. Michael-Albertville and Rogers, along with Buffalo as a top contender. We’ll

get two chances at each of these teams this season as the M-8 has gone to a double round for soccer. “Blaine will be a tough defending champ in Section 7AA, as will perennial finalist Duluth East.”

2011 Cambridge Boys Soccer records: 2-4 Mississippi 8 Conference (5th place), 7-7-1 over-all, Lost in first round of Section 7AA tourney

2012 Lineup depth (Head Coach Randy Rouse describes): We return several Varsity starters that will be the core of the team strength. This includes All-Conference player SR For-ward Josh Rouse who led the Mississippi 8 in assists in 2011, JR Midfielder Joel Hieserich, JR M Travis Olson, JR Defender Zeb Callahan, SO F Josh Samsa, and SR D Nate Nassif. Players anticipated to contribute strongly in the effort include FR M Micah Brady, and newcomers SR M Chaz Kieffer and Norwegian foreign exchange student JR M Kris Jensen. Additional senior leadership comes from SRS Caen Skogerson (D) and Micah Gertz (M).

Positives for 2012 season: Coach Rouse: “I am impressed after our first two weeks with the ease with which our players communicate and play with one another. Our efforts have looked coordinated nearly right from the start. We have been able to move on to tactics quicker this season than in the recent prior seasons. I am very impressed with both our firepower and with our wall of defense. The degree of intrasquad competition is high, and I think we will be ready for our first games earlier than usual.” The Bluejackets opened the season at 2-0, with victories over Princeton (4-2) and St. Francis (3-2).

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Rouse: “Our biggest challenges in the conference remain Buffalo, Rogers, and St. Michael-Albertville. These programs are well led and remain strong. Our entire Section 7AA

remains a challenge for us. Our goal is to try to get deeper into the playoffs than we have in recent years.”

2011 Cambridge-Isanti Football records: 1-5 Mississippi 8 Conference (7th place), 1-8 overall, Lost in Section 8AAAAA quarterfi-nals

2012 Lineup: Quarterbacks– SO John Solberg, SR Sam ThomasRunningbacks– SRS Chance Laidly - FB, Thomas - HB, Travis Holt - WB, JRS Max Knowlton - HB, Kyle Chromy - FBOffensive Linemen– SR Cody Boettcher, JRS Elliot Simon, Spencer Simon, Dakota Johnson, ChromyWide Receivers/Tight Ends– JRS Matt Kuehn, Matt Swanson, Hunter VavraKickers/Punters– SRS Joshua Rouse, Nate Nassif/ ThomasDefensive Linemen– SRS Joe Miller, Mark Gossen, Weylin Iglesias, JR Darren De-BaereLinebackers– Laidly, Thomas, Vavra, ChromySecondary– Holt, Swanson, Knowlton, Solberg

Positives for 2012 season: The Bluejack-ets will rally this season behind a power-running game featuring Chance Laidly at fullback and halfback Sam Thomas. More strengths are the returning defenders, led by hard-hitting safety Travis Holt. Those

three are captains for the 2012 campaign. Head Coach Mike Hennen: “We have a real tight-knit group of players who believe that we can beat anyone on our schedule, and challenge for both a confer-ence and section championship. “At Saturday’s scrimmage, the first posi-tive is we came out of it healthy. Secondly, the defense played real well– really stuffed the run with the front four and the line-backers doing a fantastic job. Offensively, we ran the ball real well with Chance running hard and Sam breaking off his first carry for a 40-yard touchdown.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAAAA Out-looks Coach Hennen: “Last season, (de-fending M-8 champ/State entrant) Rogers had good JV, sophomore and ninth teams again. Their big thing is their consistent team speed, so they start as favorites. Our opening foe St. Michael-Albertville returns its quarterback and top runningback. Buf-falo played a lot of juniors last season. We lose Elk River and Becker this season but gain Duluth East and Duluth Denfeld in the conference.” With the new 32-team Class 6A made up of the biggest Minnesota schools, Cambridge-Isanti is now in the revamped Section 7AAAAA. Bemidji is the favorites out of the gate since they finished as 12-1

Class 4A runners-up to Rocori last year. The Lumberjacks also begin with a soph quarterback at the helm. Coach Hennen advised to keep an eye on St. Francis, too, since they went 8-2 in 2011. More new section members are Chisago Lakes (5-5), Duluth East and Duluth Denfeld.

2011 Cambridge-Isanti Girls Tennis re-cords: 1-5 Mississippi 8 Conference (6th place), 8-12 overall, Lost in first round of Section 7AA tourney

2012 Lineup features: SRS Amanda Hanson (All-Conference 2011, 1st Singles/1st Doubles this season), Danielle Page (3rd Singles), Bethany Hanson (3rd Doubles), Madi Booth (2nd Doubles), JRS Nikki Hallstrom (All-Conference 2011, 1st Doubles/Singles), Erika Schmieg (All-Conference 2011, 1st Singles), Ellie Osborne (2nd Doubles), SOPH Emily Baker (3rd Doubles), FR Kate Hanson (4th Singles), Jade New-man (1st Doubles/Singles). Head Coach Lee Orvik: “Almost all of these girls played on the varsity squad for at least part of the season last year, so we have a healthy depth of expe-rienced players.” SRS Dagne Gorham and Katrina Page have been playing 4th

Doubles and are 5-1 this season.

Positives for 2011 season Coach Orvik: “I am very excited to see what this team can do this year. We have very nice depth of talent. These girls have worked hard in the offseason to become better tennis players, and their hard work has been evident in the early stages of the season. We don’t just have a few talented returners; we have two squads of talented returners- JV and Varsity.” Orvik’s Bluejackets are off to a 3-0 start with wins over North Branch, Cloquet-Esko and Duluth Denfeld. “We had an extremely busy and pro-ductive last week,” Coach Orvik relayed. “We were invited to the Delano/Orono Invitational on Thursday. It is an 8-team individual, flighted tournament with some tennis powerhouses from around the state including Delano, Orono, Brainerd, Totino-Grace, Staples-Motley,

Blaine, and South St. Paul. It was an opportunity for our girls to see some of the best competition around, and to see that they can play with the best. Our team did very well. We took home med-als at three positions, but every player on the team had a successful day with many impressive wins at all positions against extremely tough competitors.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Out-looks: Coach Orvik predicts Monticello, St. Michael-Albertville and Buffalo should be very good again this season in the M-8. Rogers is the defending champ after going 6-0. In Section 7AA, Andover is ranked 10th in Class AA to start this season. They are led by SR Faith Lee who was the ‘AA’ Singles consolation champ last year. Elk River is the defending 7AA Team champ and placed 3rd at State. Tough competition can also come from Forest Lake and Duluth East.

CROSS COUNTRY

2011 Cambridge-Isanti Girls Cross Country records: 7th place Mississippi 8 Conference, 13th place Section 7AA Finals2011 Cambridge-Isanti Boys Cross Country records: 6th place Mississippi 8 Conference, 9th place Section 7AA Finals

2012 Lineup: Girls– SRS Paige Muehlhauser (top C-I placings at 2011 M-8 finals & 7AA finals), Taylor Ouellette, Amy Head, JRS Maddie Ouellette and Kaelyn Rosenburg all compiled significant varsity races for the Bluejackets last season. Competing for more varsity spots are JRS Ashley Winselman and FR Courtney Dobbs & Kylie Guimont. Boys– The entire C-I varsity either graduated or moved to another school, but SR Darren Codner did run in several varsity meets in 2011. He and classmates Dylan Korta, Patrick Jones and Andrew Fosse lead a strong group of seniors, but they will be pushed by strong freshmen and sophomores. Positives for 2012 season Head Coach Josh Lowman: “In both squads we are looking to build off last fall. It would be great for the guys to climb back into the top six in the section (that will be tough) and for the girls to crack the top 10. We already have put in more work in this season at this same time last year, and I think that will really pay off down the road. The competition for varsity spots is always a positive as we look to be more competitive this season.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Lowman “M-8 Girl’s– Monticello (Class AA champs last year- three grads), Big Lake, St. Michael-Albertville and Buffalo all will have very competitive squads. M-8 Boys– Watch for the Monticello Magic and Buffalo Bison to square off at conference finals, with STMA mixing it up, as well.” “7AA Girls: Defending champ Forest Lake (10th at State– 2 grads, young), Andover (12th at State), Grand Rapids, Duluth East and Elk River are all perennial powers on the girls side and will all field competitive squads once again. 7AA Boys: Defending champ Andover (6th at State– graduated 5-of-7), Forest Lake, and Duluth East all were hit with graduation of talent but will most likely find people to step up. Look for Elk River, Chisago Lakes and Grand Rapids to mix it up, as well.”

A number of the se-nior girls are making strange statements, joking around and suggesting different practice activi-ties, which keeps it fun. We have a number of girls that are pushing each other to be the best they can be while still having fun and staying

healthy. The boys are young but hard-working.”

Great River and Section 5A Outlooks: Coach Rajkowski: “For GRC girls, I predict Hinckley-Finlayson and Mille Lacs as favorites. I not sure what defending GRC champ Pine City is return-ing. The Rush City boys had a good group of young runners last year, and they are the defend-ing GRC champs. “In the 5A Girls, St Cloud Cathederal and Annan-dale are the defending Class A State champ and runner-up. The boys could be led by defending champ St. Cloud Cathedral, Mora or Annandale.”
