THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH

  • From Fr. Jairo The celebration of the Holy Family emphasizes for the Catholic world the importance of family life. Providentially, it is celebrated in the Christmas season, when the effort to reconnect with family intersects with memory and tradition. Time is the essential element of building up family life, and the lack of time spent there wears down ultimately the very core unit of society and church.

Jesus entered the world within the family unit. Mary and Joseph smoothed the way for Jesus to come into Jewish culture bound to God by the sacred covenant between God and Abraham. God was determined to create a people for himself through the seed of Abraham and Sarah. God needed a family setting to start his human connections with his people. Strangely enough we are all branches of the tree of Abraham and Sarah.

When Mary and Joseph took their son, Jesus, to Jerusalem to fulfill the laws of purification for firstborn children, they encountered within Simeon and Anna the wisdom of generations. Simeon, the faithful prophet who assured the young couple that their Son was indeed a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for

your people Israel. Indeed those words would stay with this couple throughout their lives and perhaps brought Mary some consolation when she stood beneath Jesus’ cross years later with many more questions than answers.

Then there was the widow, Anna, a Jewish mystic. Her heart was so filled with God that when Jesus entered the Temple she knew him. She, too, saw the child as the one for whom all the generations before her were waiting. He was the redemption of Jerusalem. Within the family unit, the very seeds of salvation were nurtured by Mary and Joseph as they educated the child Jesus. He grew in wisdom and understanding of God. He also became a carpenter watching his father build and we know today that he stayed in his home until one day he heard the voice of the prophet, John the Baptist, crying out for repentance and change of heart. The days of Jesus’ work in Nazareth were coming to a close. The time for his emerging as healer and teacher were at hand.

But it all started so far away and long ago in a humble home in Nazareth wherein, like you and I, Jesus was formed by the traditions, the memories, the stories, and the teachings of his parents. It was all about family in the end. A good place to spend our time! Like all parents, Mary and Joseph surely worried and prayed for their son. They were instrumental in Jesus growing and becoming strong, learning to be a wise young man. Both the joys and the sorrows that defined their lives together as a family were met with the firm belief that God was with them. It is this faith that so many families need today. I wish you a happy Holy Family week.

There will not be CFF classes on December 30th for Christmas break. Students received notes to bring home to their parents informing them of when they return and which Wednesdays they will meet next semester. If you did not get this note, please call the CFF office (402-352-2149). Please, keep this note where you can see it as a reminder of when your students return to class.

Students in Fr. Gerry’s CFF Level 7 should be doing the classes online and writing in your Decision Point books as per guidelines given at the meeting

with parents in November. When you return to classes in January, you should bring your books with Chapters/Sessions 1 – 6 done. Group 1 will meet on

Jan. 6, Group 2 on Jan. 13 and, Group 3 on Jan 20 in St. Mary’s church basement.
