Maria joined the Workforce and Organisational Development Directorate of West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust 18 months ago. During this time Maria has championed the equality, diversity and inclusion agenda, successfully raising its profile within the trust as well as promoting these values to community groups and organisations across the West Midlands region. This work has allowed the trust to network with other organisations and share best practice. Maria is an active member of the trust’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group and is extremely approachable, and as a result she is regularly sought out by colleagues to offer advice.

Over the last two years, whilst a partner on the NHS Employers programme, the portfolio of the equality and inclusion agenda has become a key focus for the trust, with recent developments whereby Julie has fully supported and encouraged work around the EDS2 implementation and engagement plan and wider areas of accountability and governance for the relevant EDS2 goals to sit appropriately with trust board sub-committees. The support from Julie has enabled the equality lead to successfully secure the ENEI Gold Standard Award for top e-quality employer for years 2013 and 2014.

Cashain took the initiative to take a lead on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in Together and proposed that we should join the NHS Employers partners programme. Unlike many of the partners, Together does not have a dedicated resource to work solely on EDI, so he has devised a strategy and promoted this widely to achieve buy-in and has addressed the challenge of a dispersed organisation by recruiting and supporting service/department specific EDI champions to spread awareness, knowledge and lead on action.

During the last 12 months, Sue has led the patient equality agenda and in 2014 saw three years of the trust participating in London Pride. She was also a finalist in the 2014 National Diversity Awards. She is a key member of the trust’s Diversity and Equality Steering Group which has seen much more focus on key patient issues and identifying where we need to support staff for providing care to meet the needs of our diverse patient population.
