¡Hola, División 21!
Greetings from Madrid, Spain! It’s beautiful out here—I wish I could bring our
division out here for a nice vacation. It’s also crazy since Spain won the
World Cup for the first time! I actually saw the soccer team in person
parading down the streets of Madrid and got footage (remind me to show
you all the next time we all get together!) I’ve put pictures from my travel
throughout this newsletter for your enjoyment.
This newsletter’s a little late than usual, but only because the computers
here are a little strange with Microsoft Word. Nonetheless, this On the Key
Road is jam packed with some key information: blurbs from the International
Programs and Advocacy Committees, The Eliminate Project, upcoming
events such as RTCs, Fall Rally, and Key Leader, as well as other information.
Check out this YouTube Video at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWXJtkg8ynQ for more information
regarding NJ Key Club’s Major Emphasis Program (MEP): Live 2 Learn.
Note: There will be no PCM for the month of July. Things are too crazy to
have one take place with vacations and everything. I know I’m going out to
California to visit my grandparents next week so we’ll meet again together
in August at a date to later be announced.
We’ve done it again: Division 21 has submitted 100% CMRFs on time for the
month of June—what an accomplishment, especially since it’s the summer
and we are all busy! Thank you so much Secretaries for your hard work!
Now without further ado, I will let you enjoy my newsletter. If you have any
questions at all, do not hesitate to shoot me over a text or email!
Yours in Caring and in Service,
Gabrielle Gutierrez

Division 21 has been a leading division of the New Jersey District of Key Club International
thanks to all of your hard work and dedication! All of you: whether you’re a club Secretary
filling out CMRFs or a general member participating in fundraisers, you have started our
service year off to a wonderful start. Here are a few out of the many reasons why you guys are so amazing:
Accomplishments

In the Spotlight:
Name: Kristen Greco
HS: Mount Olive HS
Position: President
Grade: Senior
Kristen has demonstrated dedication to Division 21 in its
early months. Although our OTC for her club was held
outside of her high school: Mount Olive HS, she still
managed to mail all of her officers’ and her own Signed
Service Agreements with her advisor’s signature to me
within days. Her club has consistently submitted CMRFs
early and has maintained great communication. They
were also able to accomplish community service, even
with the end of school year arriving. Let’s give Kristen a
round of applause!
Club Thank-Yous Thank you, High Point: for early submission of
CMRFs!
Thank you, Sparta: for early submission of
CMRFs!
Thank you, Mt. Olive: for early submission of
CMRFs and speedy submission of signed
service agreements!
Thank you, Vo-Tech: for super early
submission of CMRFs!
Thank you, Pope John: for on-time

Over 738,900 people in New Jersey live at or below the poverty
level.
27% of children in New Jersey live in low-income households.
1 out of 5 families in New Jersey do not earn enough to afford
basic necessities such as food and housing.
These are all serious problems that are occurring in our own state, and they are rapidly increasing. However, we
have the power to change them. That is why we are so excited to announce that the focus for the District Programs
Committee for the 2010-2011 Service Year is Poverty. (All facts can be found on the New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition
Website: http://njahc.org/hunger-in-nj.html.)
This year, the committee will be dedicated to giving each club an opportunity to choose how they would like to
go about advocating and serving while guiding them along the way. We chose to run the committee this way because
each community is hit with poverty in different ways.
Some examples of ways to advocate are to advertise as much as possible (such as posters and videos), and to
contact your local government representative and attend press events. An easy way to get support would be to not ask
for money, but instead trying to provide supplies, food, and service. Clubs could provide a ―service tip of the month‖
and statistics to give the members easy pieces of information to follow and spread.
Clubs and divisions could also participate in service activities such as:
- Collecting school supplies at Fall Rally
- Collecting food at your school and community throughout the year (not just holidays)
- A ―Fill the Bus with Food‖ fundraiser (line up and pass the food to the bus)
- Volunteering at shelters/food kitchens
- Shop rite/Cost Co will give gift cards
- Gathering food left over at sporting venues
- Donating to Good Will
- Helping with Jennifer’s Closet
- Collecting prescription glasses or other necessities
- Asking local businesses to donate
- Seven Eleven gives leftover food to charity
- Organizing a Giving Tree activity
- Donating to Toys for Tots
More information about the District Programs Committee will be available on the New Jersey District Website
and in the back-to-school District Mailings. So, get ready to defeat poverty together, New Jersey! If you have any
questions, feel free to contact the Co-Chairs of the committee, District Secretary Kevin Sun Division 5 Lieutenant
Governor Julia Dickhaus.

As Key Clubbers, most of us are aware that the District Project for this service year is the wonderful Children’s
Specialized Hospital. However, did you know that Key Club International also partners with other service
organizations around the world?
One such organization is the March of Dimes! March of Dimes is a global non-profit organization that aims to combat
premature birth, birth defects, and infant mortality in infants while also promoting healthier lifestyles for mothers. This
great cause has been around since 1938 and has raised millions of dollars for treatments and research.
Key Clubbers have a passion for service and March of Dimes is a truly worthy cause and there are many ways you
can get involved. The first step is to contact your local March of Dimes chapter and partner with them to hold a
fundraiser. Any type of fundraiser can help you raise money for the cause, no matter how large or small. They can
range from bake sales to car washes to dances to anything you can imagine! Additionally, your club can sell March
of Dimes merchandise, such as wristbands or T-shirts, etc. The possibilities are endless so don’t be afraid to get
creative! March of Dimes’ largest event is the annual walk, March for Babies, so your club should definitely plan on
attending.
This year the fundraising goal for the NJ District is $3,000, so let’s work together to make it happen! To get
more information and find a March of Dimes chapter near you, visit www.marchofdimes.com
Another Key Club International Service Partner is UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund). This year, UNICEF launched
their ―I Believe in Zero‖ campaign. This awareness program is based on the fact that, worldwide, 25,000 children die
every day from preventable causes. However, by increasing education, providing medical care, and
supplying food for these children, UNICEF hopes to reduce that number to ―zero‖. More details on this campaign
can be found at www.ibelieveinzero.org.
As Key Clubbers, you play an integral part in the UNICEF fundraising process. The major fundraiser for UNICEF is Trick-
or-Treat for UNICEF. Every club in the NJ District should receive a bundle of orange boxes, stickers and other
information before Halloween. Some leave the boxes in local businesses or in various rooms throughout their school.
Others stick them in friend’s lockers or teachers’ mailboxes. The most common method is, of course, going around
Trick-or-Treating on Halloween with the bright box in hand! Whichever way you choose, you can contribute! This
year, the fundraising goal for UNICEF for the NJ District of Key Club International is $33,190.25.
--3.3 million: The number of newborns worldwide dying in the first month of life is 3.3 million
--190 countries that UNICEF works in
--25 for 25,000 children dying every day from preventable causes.
To reach this goal, we need everyone’s help so please pick up an orange box today and start Trick-or-Treating!

heEliminateProject
With The ELIMINATE Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and
neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of 60,000 innocent babies and 30,000 mothers each year.
The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme
sensitivity to light and touch.
To eliminate MNT from the Earth by 2015, 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This
requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110
million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.
Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant
public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in
doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health
care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.

What your club can do: help run activities
What your Kiwanis club can do: have an informational booth regarding Kiwanis and youth
K-Family Picnic:
The K-Family Picnic takes place Saturday, July 24th at Oakhurst Park in Ocean Township.
The event begins at 12:00 pm and will run until about 5:00 pm. The cost is $10 per person.
Games, activities, and food are all a part of this wonderful opportunity to bond with other
New Jersey Key Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs, and Builders’ Clubs!
Directions from North Jersey:
Take the Garden State Parkway to Exit 105 toward NJ-35/Eatontown/Long Branch. The exit
road will turn into NJ-36 E. Take NJ-36 E for 2.2 miles. Take Ramp onto NJ-35 S/State Route
35. Take NJ-35 S for about 2 miles. Pass over West Park Avenue and turn right into the jug
handle toward West Park Avenue. Take West Park Avenue for 1.3 miles. Take a right onto
Larkin Place. The Park will be on your right hand side.
Fall RTC (North)
If you did not attend the Spring North RTC in May at Morris Knolls High School, it is
imperative you attend this Fall Northern RTC being held at Millburn HS. Unfortunately, this is
a greater distance than Morris Knolls, but if you chose not to come to the Spring RTC, it is
mandatory you attend this one. More details will follow soon regarding times and
directions. It will take place on Saturday, September 25th. If for some reason, you cannot
attend this one, you will have to go out of your way to attend either the South or Central
RTC. They are your last options!
Fall Rally
Fall Rally is an awesome gathering of over a thousand Key Clubbers from all over New
Jersey who come together at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ to get pumped up
for the new service year! It will take place on Sunday, October 10th.
Even though it is not until October, it is vital you begin planning for how your club will go
about this. If you wait until school begins again in September, it might be hard for you to
gain approval for a bus since your Boards of Education will not meet for awhile. Start
having your club members save money, talk to your school’s administration, and plan
early. That way, when the fall comes around, you don’t have to worry about getting your
Key Club field trip approved and you can ease into Six Flags without any anxiety.

KEY LEADER -written by Tom Kraeutler, Lieutenant Governor Division 7
Do you have a desire to improve your leadership? Do you want to make new
friends with similar interests? What would you do if you could do both of these in
the same weekend? No, this isn’t a sham, its Key Leader Weekend! Key Leader is
run by Kiwanis International with the mission of providing a ―life-changing
experience that inspires young people to achieve their personal best through
service leadership.‖ The weekend is designed to kick-start a lifelong process of
personal leadership growth and development. The program focuses on
leadership in three communities: local, state/national community, and global. It is
a highly esteemed program in New Jersey and its greatness is directly related to
the high remarks of our District on the national level. This year, Key Leader will be
held Friday, December 10th through Sunday, December 12th at Camp Lebanon in
Lebanon, New Jersey. Key Leader is open to all students from grades 9-12 and,
though it is run by Kiwanis International, is open to ALL students, not just Key
Clubbers. Registration is $200, although any attending Key Clubbers will receive a
$25 from the Kiwanis International Foundation and will pay only $175. If you are
interested, be sure to register by October 15th to ensure your spot in the program.
Contact your Lieutenant Governor for registration information and if you have any
questions – they’re more than ready to help! See you there!

Important Reminders
As you may have noticed, there aren’t many important
Key Club days coming up since it is now summer. A lot of
times, clubs fall out of the loop because of the long
summer gap and it’s hard to get back to things come
September. We realize many of you guys are inactive
during the summer However that does not mean your
responsibility as a Key Clubber and Executive Officer
ends. You are still responsible for:
Completing CMRFs for the months of June, July, and
August: Even if your club is inactive. Simply leave the
“service and hours” section blank, but specify PCMs,
OTCs, and anything else Key Club related.
Attending PCMs and OTCs coordinated by me: To
enhance our communication, I will be holding monthly
PCMs during the summer (one in June, one in July, and
one in August) Presidents and/or Vice Presidents, you
are required to attend these. I will try to come up with
a date that is acceptable to all of you. If you missed
your club’s OTC, you are responsible to meet with me
over the summer to coordinate a training time.
Preparing to attend the Fall RTC: You are responsible to
attend the Fall North RTC in Millburn to be trained if you
did not attend the Spring RTC held in May. If you
cannot make the North RTC, it is up to you to travel to
the Central RTC or South RTC.
UPCOMING DATES:
July 24th: K-Family
Picnic at Oakhurst Park
in Ocean Twp.
August 10th: CMRFs for
the month of July are
due
August PCM: TBA
