Transformational...
The winds in higher education are
shifting. As the world becomes more
interconnected, more interdisciplinary
in nature and more reliant upon
emerging technologies, it is crucial that
the exceptional learning experience we
provide be just as interconnected …
just as interdisciplinary … just as
technologically driven.
We must empower the best and brightest students to come to Drake to realize their dreams.
We must attract and retain the finest scholars, academicians and teachers this country has to offer.
We must improve and enhance the physical facilities, technology and resources across our campus.
We must broaden perspectives through exciting and innovative new interdisciplinary centers and institutes.
We must build upon our collective financial strength.

Visions of a Brighter Future
Sometimes, there comes a rare moment when love ... of new ideas, common
purpose and life-changing discovery … can power a revolution.
It is the kind of moment when a university arrives at a crossroads,
pauses to catch its breath, and looks around. For passion, the kind
that creates a 21st-century place of learning so students may suc-
cessfully compete in an increasingly complex and interconnected
world. For excellence that shakes the status quo to illuminate en-
tire disciplines. For opportunity that empowers dreams to over-
come the gravest odds in realizing their potential. For new connec-
tions — among people, professions and more sustainable ways of
learning, living and being. For innovative ways to deliver the kind
of leadership the world needs.
This is the moment that is distinctlyDrake. A moment in our history
when, together, we can do what it takes to be one of the very best in-
stitutions of higher education in the United States.
We invite you to join us as we seize this moment. Because it’s our
moment ... to transcend our individual aspirations, to enable fu-
ture generations to achieve their goals in life, and to create history
by proving, yet again, that some love stories ...
really can change the world.-
“At Drake, our commitment to providing an exceptional learning
environment and boundless opportunities for our students
is a passion that is shared by every member of the Drake
community and infused into everything that we do on a daily
basis. That passionate commitment defines who we are as
the Drake family and provides the context for every decision
that we make. Already recognized by our colleagues in higher
education for academic excellence, in five years we aspire to
be a national model for the very best in higher education.”

For learning. For living.
For blazing new trails
of thought and breathing
new life into every facet
of human knowledge.
Passion is what it takes. The
kind of passion that comes alive
in the eyes of a student on the
verge of a new discovery. Or in
the heart of a professor who
collaborates with a student, and
together they present their
findings at a national conference.
Or in the mind of the graduate
who carries the Drake legacy
out into the world with every
new accomplishment.
Passion is what drives us. It has
since our founding in 1881. Our
people. Our places. Our purpose.
Whether it is the way we invest
in new knowledge through our
interdisciplinary centers and
institutes, or endow the
professorships necessary to be
one of the best institutions of
higher education in the country,
it all starts with passion. It is
what drives you and your love for
Drake. And it is what creates new
possibilities, empowers
achievement and transforms
bright young minds into the
leaders of tomorrow.
Passion for What’s Possible
Passion for community … whether it’s
creating new endowed professorships to
attract the nation’s best scholars or enabling
the professional development of our faculty
and staff, we have ranked in the top 10
among the nation’s midsized universities in
the Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Great
Schools to Work For” survey.
Passion for Drake … in the fall of 2009
we achieved a record retention rate of 89.4
percent, placing Drake in the top 10 percent of
all four-year institutions in the United States.
“Excellence is a habit, and it doesn’t
come easily. Talking about it is one
thing, but it’s another thing entirely
to actually back it up the way Drake
does. Whether it’s groundbreaking
legal research, a renovated Drake
Stadium, or beautifying the Drake
Plaza, you see the excellence
everywhere. It’s in our blood.”

It is relentless.
It is enduring.
It is the foundation of
everything we do.
Our quest for excellence
transcends time and discipline
and takes us beyond the
boundaries of imagination.
It is explored in all of its forms …
excellence in teaching, in learning,
in leading, in pioneering new
ideas and constantly evolving old
ones. It carries with it the
responsibility, and the honor,
of making life better for people
down the street, across the
country and around the world.
Excellence is an innate value at
Drake. It can be seen at every
turn, in the tens-of-millions of
dollars dedicated to the
improvement of our buildings
and facilities; in the increased
emphasis on providing new
scholarships in order to open
doors of opportunity for the very
best students this nation has to
offer; or in the strides we take to
enhance our outstanding
curriculum. Excellence is rooted
in the fabric of our rich history. It
is what brings us all together in
spirit. And it is the reason we are
viewed as one of the finest
master’s universities in America.
Excellence that En-
Excellence in teaching … from providing cutting-edge
learning environments to encouraging collaborative
scholarship through new interdisciplinary centers, our
tireless pursuit of excellence continues to define us. In
the 2010 U.S. News & World Report rankings, Drake had
the third highest score for reputation for academic
quality among 572 masters institutions in the nation.
Excellence in learning … our mock trial team
recently won first place at the Harvard Crimson Classic,
and the Associated Collegiate Press awarded our

Nearly 18,000 Drake alumni
have chosen to live and work in
Des Moines — Iowa’s capital,
largest city and center of
business, industry,
entertainment and culture.
Des Moines has been named
one of the top 10 cities for the
next decade by Kiplinger’s
Personal Finance magazine.
Forbes magazine ranked
Des Moines No. 1 on its list of
“Best Places for Business
and Careers.”
“Drake is an excellent institution in a
wonderfully surprising city. Des Moines is
a city where big things happen. Business,
industry, politics, media, the arts, law, medicine,
it’s all here. The recognition and rankings
Des Moines receives are wonderful, but you
have to be here and a part of this community
to truly experience the amazing sense of
energy and opportunity this place affords.”

To realize potential. To shine a
light on the hopes and dreams
of today and transform them
into the realities of tomorrow.
Opportunity. It is — in its purest
form — the starting point for any
human endeavor. To learn from
the best. To take one’s curiosity
out into the world. To engage
with the finest programs,
resources and technology. To
prepare for, and thrive within,
today’s interconnected world.
It all begins with an opportunity.
It may be the high school senior
who has always dreamed of
attending Drake seeing that
dream realized thanks to a
scholarship. Or the biology
professor who will be able to take
her research to new heights
thanks to new, state-of-the-art
facilities and laboratories. Or
the junior traveling the world
thanks to the Center for Global
Citizenship. Opportunity. It is a
door propped open by you. By
your love for Drake. And by the
goal we all share of positioning
Drake to be one of the country’s
best universities.
Opportunities that Open Doors
Opportunities to excel … an exceptional
learning environment is a key factor in
fostering academic excellence. In recent
years we’ve invested nearly $70 million in
renovations to classrooms and residence
halls, upgrades to laboratories and
technology, and new construction.
Opportunities to achieve … we spent
more than $47 million in financial
assistance for students in the 2009-2010
academic year alone, with 98 percent of
undergraduates receiving some form of aid.
Opportunities to grow … demand for the
Drake experience continues to expand
significantly as we attract more of the
nation’s best young minds every year. After
several years of double-digit increases, our
applications for fall 2010 were almost 20
percent ahead of the previous year.
“When we talk about
fostering connections that
change lives, it’s because we
see these connections
happening at Drake and
know how powerful the
changes can be for students.
So it’s paramount that we
enhance our ability to
connect students with
world-class teachers, with
new and emerging fields of
study, and with opportunities
to travel the world.”

Connections that inspire … are critical to Drake’s future as
one of the nation’s very best universities, whether it is connecting
students to faculty or rewarding faculty and staff achievement in
more tangible ways. In fact, we’ve added more than $12 million in
new funds to the faculty and staff compensation budget over the
past six years to ensure students will have greater access to the
best minds in their fields.
Connections that empower … not surprisingly, we also
continue to be one of the top producers of Fulbright Scholars among
master’s universities nationwide, with four students and two
faculty members receiving Fulbright Scholarships in recent years.
They can be seen around
every corner. In every building.
At any point in the day.
Their simplicity is matched only
by their brilliance and power to
illuminate everything they touch.
Connections. It might be a
moment between a student and
teacher that will forever impact
them both. Or an idea that will
lead someone down a new path
in life. Or an opportunity to link
fields of study, which had never
previously intersected, in an
innovative and imaginative way.
Since our founding and
throughout our history, we have
helped forge these life-changing
connections. Connections that
empower individuals — through
expertise, resources and
technology — to do, and to be,
their very best. Connections that
enrich learning through
world-class teaching, enhanced
curricular and cocurricular
offerings, new interdisciplinary
centers and institutes, and
unparalleled facilities. And
connections that ignite the
brightest futures one can
imagine — in business,
medicine, the arts, law,
education and countless other
professional fields — in a way
that truly is distinctlyDrake.
Connections that Change Lives
It is not easily defined.
You know it when you see it.
Leadership. True leadership.
For some, it comes naturally.
For others, it is a part of their
character that may need a bit
of coaxing to bring out into
the world. But no matter what,
to see it in action is a thing
of beauty. It inspires. It
collaborates. It is applied with
a sense of values, ethics and
social responsibility that is
beyond question.
Our brand of leadership is
something special. It harkens
back to the day we were
founded by a Civil War general
and continues to shape us now,
as Iowa’s largest private college.
It can be seen in the glint of our
eyes … the student who won a
leadership award at a national
conference, the professor
leading a conversation about
the economy on National Public
Radio, the alumnus who has
led one of the nation’s great
states as Governor or the
institution itself, as a leader in
the world of sports through
a century of hosting the
renowned Drake Relays.
Leadership for Life
Leaders in knowledge …
endowed professorships are
a strong indicator of academic
excellence and leadership. In
recent years, Drake has
added four new endowed
professorships (Baum, Turner,
Fisher/Stelter and Johnson) in
addition to other achievements,
like establishing the
Buchanan Center for
Entrepreneurial Leadership.
Leaders in spirit …
every year, more than 300
students take advantage of
the programs, opportunities
and interactions with alumni
and community leaders offered
by our Donald V. Adams
Leadership Institute, which
exemplifies Drake’s tireless
commitment to preparing
students for leadership
within their communities
and professions.
Leaders in achievement …
more than 90 percent of
Drake students find career
employment or enter graduate
school within six months after
receiving their degree. A
sampling of our many alums
making positive change in the
world includes three governors,
the CEO of Chicago Mercantile
Exchange Group, the CEO of
Principal Financial Group, the
retired CEO of Walgreens, the
Assistant Secretary of State
for African Affairs, an Emmy
Award-winning actor, a
Pulitzer Prize-winning
journalist and the former
Chairman of McDonald’s.
“True leadership isn’t something that can be quantified. It’s about listening, inspiring action, moving ahead in a confident and thoughtful way. It instills an energy and belief in those around you. Leadership is something that is taken very seriously at Drake. It’s the type of people we bring in — faculty, administration, staff and students. And it’s the type of person our experience produces.”

“This campaign is intended to
support a vision for Drake that is
far reaching in its scope and
supported by plans to create an
environment that is conducive to
the changing needs of higher
education and staffed by the
highest caliber people who believe
in the vision of the University and
are prepared to deliver it.”

Creating Access to OpportunitiesInvesting in scholarships will
ensure that we remain
financially accessible to
America’s best students and
competitive with other top
universities. It is also critical that
we do everything we can to
reduce the debt burden placed
on students and their families.
distinctlyDrake seeks to
raise at least $50 million in
scholarship funding as an initial
goal to achieve this priority.
Endowing Chairs and ProfessorshipsIncreasing the number of endowed
faculty positions at Drake will
demonstrate to our community,
and to the entire nation, the depth
of our commitment to being one of
the best universities in America. In
addition to adding these endowed
professorships, we also must
invest in our faculty’s research
efforts and scholarly pursuits.
distinctlyDrake seeks to raise
$26–$50 million in order to add
26 endowed faculty positions.
Funding Capital ProjectsInvesting in our campus and
facilities is essential in order
to create the kind of
exceptional learning experience
that will continue to attract
the nation’s best and brightest
students. The construction of
a new School of Education
building, new and renovated
science facilities, and the
renovation and expansion of
Cartwright Hall, Cowles
Library and Drake Fieldhouse
will do just that.
distinctlyDrake seeks to
raise $50–$85 million for the
construction and renovation of
these facilities.
Developing Interdisciplinary CentersEnriching our curricular
offerings through new and
expanded interdisciplinary
centers will demonstrate to the
world our commitment to
academic quality, and enhance
our ability to prepare students
for the highest levels of success.
We will achieve this through the
expansion of the Center for
Leadership, the Center for
Global Citizenship and the
Intellectual Property Law Center,
as well as the creation of the
Center for Speaking and Writing
and the Institute for Creative
Learning and Teaching.
distinctlyDrake seeks to
raise $15–$18 million for the
support and development of
interdisciplinary centers.
Building Our Collective StrengthStrengthening The Drake Fund
addresses the most immediate
needs of the University. The
Drake Fund provides the
University with the necessary
agility to keep alive the mission
of Drake, to maintain our
annual promise to students
and their families and to build
upon our 130-year legacy of
offering the best possible
learning experience.
distinctlyDrake seeks to
raise $3.5–$4 million a year in
annual operational support of
The Drake Fund.
Vision is a powerful thing. It has the ability to fuel passion, to foster excellence, to unleash opportunity, to create lasting connections and to strengthen one’s ability to lead at the most crucial points in history. But vision alone isn’t enough. Even the most ambitious vision needs one thing in order to power it into action — resources.
Our vision is simple, yet bold … to be one of the very best institutions of higher education in the United States. In order to generate the necessary resources to transform that vision into reality, we have established the following priorities as the foundation for distinctlyDrake:
Our Priorities
AchievingThe time is now.
The moment is ours.
We are honored and eager to lead the way forward in seizing the moment that is distinctlyDrake. We believe it represents an unprecedented opportunity for us at Drake to pause as a community, take a breath and look deeply — outward and inward — at everything we need to do in order to be one of the very best institutions of higher education in the United States. While our rich history of achievements provides ample evidence of our ability to graduate leaders who can change the world, what distinctlyDrake seeks are the financial resources we so urgently need to take a transformative leap forward and become a 21st-century university that continues to play a central role in overcoming the unique challenges posed by an increasingly technological, global and interconnected world. It is an extraordinary invitation for all of us who share a deep and enduring love for Drake — to help ensure that this university may more fully realize the promise of its future; to leave behind a better world for generations to come. We urge you to join us in this remarkable effort.
Sincerely,

Our Vision
What does it take to be one of the best institutions of higher education in America? It takes people like you … successful,
loyal, generous individuals whose accomplishments in life are matched only by a will to empower others
to achieve equally exceptional things. It takes an uncommon sense of purpose ... one which challenges an
entire community to never stop moving and growing and looking for answers because, quite simply, it
is the right thing to do. It takes a special moment in time … when a crossroad presents itself and the world
watches with anticipation of the greatness that this moment may produce.
We urge you to help us seize this moment. To meet this challenge. To, once again, add your distin-
guished voice to the love story that is distinctlyDrake. There are many ways for you to make a gift
to Drake and help us achieve our vision.
Ways to GiveEndowed Funds. You may permanently invest in Drake University, our students and our faculty through a gift to the endowment. When the market value of the invested principal increases, so does the annual payout — providing the University with an ongoing source of funding that grows over time. Endowed funds, which can recognize the donor or someone the donor wishes to honor, are typically made for endowed positions or a scholarship and provide Drake with a vital, continuous source of support.
Term and Restricted Funds. Gifts to term and restricted funds may be directed to specific people, programs or research of the donor’s choosing and are spent as they come in. While recognizing and acknowledging that a valuable set of activities or programming may not exist in perpetuity, these gifts demonstrate that a significant investment for a period of time can help those activities or programs grow, achieve stability and become successful.
Capital Gifts. Capital gifts provide the support necessary for construction and renovation costs associated with a particular building on the Drake campus.
Planned Giving. Planned giving offers donors — after careful consideration and planning — the ability to make a sizable contribution to Drake in a variety of ways, including a bequest or living trust; by designating Drake as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, IRA or other retirement plan; or through a “life income gift,” which offers immediate and considerable tax savings as well as an income for life.
Annual Support — The Drake Fund. The Drake Fund provides essential support for the University’s operating budget, enabling us to recruit the most sought-after faculty and students, retain our outstanding faculty and staff, provide financial assistance to students in need and increase the professional opportunities available to students through internships. Support of The Drake Fund helps meet the most immediate needs of the University, including scholarships, athletics, the arts, leadership opportunities, the library and each of our individual colleges and schools.
“When I accepted the Opperman Scholarship, I passed up scholarship offers from some of the top law schools in the country, including Iowa, Notre Dame and Duke, and I’ve never regretted it. The Opperman Scholarship provided me with the economic security to focus on my studies and helped me land a job as a judicial clerk for a United States Court of Appeals judge, one of the best jobs in the legal profession.”
Zachary Hindman LW’10Opperman Scholar at Drake Law School
“After my first year of college, I was faced with taking out additional loans in order to return to Drake for my sophomore year. I was concerned about the amount of debt I was accumulating. Being awarded a Longfield Scholarship relieved that anxiety so I can focus on learning.”
Alex MaltsevLongfield Scholar majoring in marketing and international business
Empowering
Few virtues in life are as noble as the desire to be the very best person you can be. The best
citizen. The best thinker. The best student and, ultimately, the best professional. It takes a lot to
commit to that dream day after day, year after year. It takes talent and skill. Perseverance
and personal fortitude. Confidence and character.
These are the kind of individuals we want at Drake — and financial barriers should never stand in
the way. Each year these individuals come to us from around the world and represent a vibrant
spectrum of backgrounds. In order to continue making Drake’s exceptional learning experience
available to students who lack the financial resources to attend, it is imperative that we invest
ourselves in them through more endowed scholarship funding. Without question, we have laid
the groundwork for this important effort. A gift from Law School alumnus Dwight D. Opperman
made it possible for the University to establish the Opperman Scholar Program, which
provides full tuition merit scholarships to top Law School applicants from across the country.
And Drake created the Longfield Scholarship Program — thanks to the generosity of alumni
William P. and Nancy Longfield — which provides eight academic scholarships to undergraduate
students. However, even though each year we dedicate tens-of-millions of dollars to financial
assistance, only a small fraction of that amount is generated by the University’s endowment.
We must commit additional resources to this effort in order to continue attracting and
retaining bright, motivated students who otherwise would not be able to attend Drake.
Students who represent the best our country has to offer, who will strengthen our 130-year
legacy, who will bring a distinctive voice to our dynamic community and who will, like you,
contribute their own verse to the Drake love story. By offering a heightened level of financial
assistance we will open new doors of opportunities to students who have earned it, while at
the same time create new opportunities for the world to benefit from their talents and
abilities. When students graduate from Drake with a reduced debt burden, they are free to
pursue the kind of endeavors that can make our community, our city, our country and our
world better. They are not compelled to go after only the best paying option in order to pay
down a significant level of college debt. While distinctlyDrake has a targeted goal for
scholarship funding of nearly $50 million, there should be no limit to our efforts when it
comes to empowering America’s best students with the Drake experience.
Creating Access to Opportunities
Creating Access to Opportunities
A Better Drake …
The learning community at Drake is characterized by excellence.
By enabling top high school students to attend Drake through
scholarships, we will reaffirm that excellence and position
ourselves for even greater heights well into the future. We will
demonstrate to students and their families that we are
committed to providing unwavering tangible support to
empower them to become leaders and achieve their dreams.
A Better World …
By reducing the debt burden placed on students and their
families, we are positioning those students to enter the world
chasing their dreams and not just a paycheck. The great minds
that graduate from Drake hold a rich abundance of promise.
They can make the world a better place across the broad
spectrum of professional disciplines. With the luxury of financial
freedom in their first years out of college, these special
individuals can use their talents and gifts to improve lives.
“In rehearsals, I try to create an environment
in which everyone is involved in the critical

with solutions. By the time a performance
comes around, all I have to do is count the
tunes off. They own the product and can deal
with issues as they happen. My teaching goal
is always planned obsolescence.”

Engaging
The look in the eyes of a student who has just been
inspired by the words and actions of a professor is,
in a word, magical. It illustrates learning in its purest
form. It brings passion to the surface, rattles the
intellect and establishes a connection between
teacher and learner that cannot be denied.
This is the kind of effect the best faculty can have
on their students and on their institution as a
whole. They bring the kind of knowledge and
achievements that garner national and
international respect. They bring an attitude and
verve for subject matter that is truly infectious.
And they bring the kind of expertise and scholarly
pursuits that can elevate an entire institution.
Nothing gives us more pride at Drake than the
quality of our faculty. And we must continuously
push ahead in our ability to attract and retain the
best teachers and scholars in America. This can be
done by increasing the number of endowed
professorships and investing in their research and
scholarly activities. Therefore distinctlyDrake
seeks to endow 26 new faculty positions, which will
include professorships, distinguished professorships,
chairs and distinguished chairs. The funding
necessary for each of these positions will range
from $1 million to $2.5 million.
Endowing Chairs and Professorships
Endowing Chairs and Professorships
Sustain and Enhance Academic Excellence …
By adding 26 endowed professorships, we will send a clear message to the
region, the nation and the world — Drake is among the best. Endowed
professorships convey academic excellence and reinforce the perception
that ours is an institution that, more than anything, values quality. Investing
in our faculty in this way will ease year-to-year budgeting and planning
pressures and bring a level of prestige to our entire community that is an
accurate reflection of the experience we offer.
Develop Faculty Promise …
An investment in the professional development and scholarly pursuits of our
faculty is an investment in our entire community. distinctlyDrake will raise
the necessary funding for faculty research, travel, participation in
conferences and other endeavors as a way to perpetuate academic
excellence and foster the high-quality connections that faculty forge with
their students. These connections are created through collaborative
research, co-authoring journal publications and exceptional classroom
teaching. This effort will complement recent gifts that have endowed the
Fred and Patty Turner Professorship in Jazz Studies, the Peggy Fisher and
Larry Stelter Chair of Magazine Journalism, the Herb and Karen Baum Chair
in Ethics and the Professions and a directorship of the Drake Relays in honor
of Franklin “Pitch” Johnson.

Enhancing
Our learning environment is the foundation of our experience. The buildings, facilities,
technology and learning resources we provide stretch the bounds of the imagination and stir
within our community a constant craving for academic greatness. Still, we can do better.
Walk across our beautiful campus and everything you see — from Helmick Commons, to
classrooms and laboratories, to residence hall rooms — is there thanks to the generosity, the
vision and the love for Drake of people like you. In the past eight years alone we have
invested nearly $70 million in upgrading 31 classrooms, renovating every residence hall on
campus, revitalizing Drake Stadium, campus beautification projects such as the 28th Street
Plaza and several other initiatives. Additionally, the renovation of the Pomerantz Student
Union and Hubbell Dining Hall offers undergraduates, graduate students, law students,
faculty, administrators and staff truly community-oriented environments in which to gather.
All of this work has set the stage for the next phase of improvements to our physical plant.
Even with this outstanding foundation, we must continue to equip our students, faculty, staff and
administrators with the most flexible, state-of-the-art environments that support student
learning. And we must ensure that these improvements break disciplinary boundaries and touch
all aspects of life at Drake. With a new School of Education Building, students will learn cutting-
edge teaching techniques and best practices utilizing classrooms and resources that will rival any
other institution in the country. New and renovated science classrooms and laboratories will
enable undergraduate and graduate students to gain extensive hands-on experience working with
the kind of technology they will encounter upon entering the professional world. Improvements to
the Law School’s Cartwright Hall — both in terms of technology and the environment — will
enhance the learning experience of our law students and position them to achieve even greater
heights. Renovations to Cowles Library will offer enduring benefits to the entire Drake campus
community — as well as to the city of Des Moines — with state-of-the-art technology and
facilities that epitomize the true essence of learning. Physical improvements to Drake Fieldhouse
will provide student-athletes with elite training and practice facilities and will ensure Drake’s
leadership position in the pursuit of a new paradigm for college sports. By expanding Drake
Fieldhouse to include classrooms and other areas for academic enrichment, student-athletes
will experience the true integration of intercollegiate athletics with a dynamic leadership
curriculum. By demonstrating the learning outcomes produced through Division I sports, Drake
and its student-athletes will hold a prominent place within higher education.
These improvements to our physical plant are a crucial ingredient in order to be one of the
finest universities in America. The time is now.
Funding Capital Projects
Funding Capital Projects
distinctlyDrake calls for a substantial investment in campus facility funding, which will address:
■■ Construction of a new School of Education building Historically, Drake has offered outstanding programs in education. This project will take that exceptional reputation to even greater heights. Our new facility will feature nine state-of-the-art classrooms, a library, a technology lab, a tiered classroom, conference rooms, offices and meeting spaces.
■■ Construction of new science facilities with renovations to classrooms and laboratories The spirit of innovation and creative thinking at Drake truly comes alive in the teaching and learning of the sciences. That spirit will be fostered by the construction of two new science buildings and the renovation of three existing buildings — empowering students and faculty in our science programs to achieve greatness in a world-class environment.
■■ Renovation and addition to Cowles Library Cowles Library is the academic heart of the Drake campus and must be enhanced to a level one would expect to find at one of America’s best universities. This project will include an expanded teaching classroom, a high-density robotic storage tower, an expansion of Cowles Café, high-end computing technology and an upgraded second-floor conference area.
■■ Renovation and Expansion of Drake Fieldhouse The Drake Fieldhouse has been a connecting place for generations of students as they’ve competed on the field, on the court and in the classroom. The renovation of this historic facility will ensure that Drake students have access to world-class training and practice facilities, while its expansion will add a new leadership lab, classrooms and space for academic enrichment.
■■ Renovation of Cartwright Hall Drake has a long and proud history of providing an exceptional law school experience. This project will build upon that excellent reputation by renovating classrooms, upgrading technology, expanding common areas and meeting spaces, refurbishing faculty offices and enhancing the building’s entrance.

Enlightening
Having the ability to look at the world differently than one ever has before does not come easily.
However, it is essential in order to succeed in a 21st century that demands intellectual agility,
interdisciplinary grit and the kind of creative thinking and leadership that can effectively
integrate disparate bodies of knowledge.
Our love for knowledge — much like your love for Drake — is enduring. We constantly strive to
break through traditional boundaries of thought and instill in our students a critical
understanding of the true impact that knowledge can have on the world. In 2000 we founded
the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute, offering students an abundance of opportunities to
develop the kind of critical leadership skills and abilities that will distinguish them throughout
their careers. We are now in a position to expand upon this endeavor, through the creation of
the Center for Leadership, which will provide an even broader array of opportunities for
students and faculty to define, understand, replicate and strengthen leadership as both a
theoretical concept and a tangible function in today’s world. In 2002 we established the Center
for Global Citizenship, which prepares students to thrive in different cultural contexts and view
their own culture from the perspective of others. Enhancing and expanding the Center for
Global Citizenship is essential as we continue to infuse the global perspective throughout the
Drake curriculum and embrace internationalization as a pervasive element of the institutional
culture. This comprehensive internationalization will not only enable students to thrive but to
become leaders in a world where geopolitical borders have become irrelevant to human
activity. In 2007 we founded the Intellectual Property Law Center — leveraging the strength of
Drake’s outstanding Law School to advance learning in this exciting field. Again, we are now
seeking to expand this effort and add to such dynamic offerings as an annual summer institute,
which brings top judges, policy makers, industry leaders, attorneys, academicians and students
to explore cutting-edge issues. Additionally, through the creation of the Center for Speaking
and Writing, students will gain expertise through symposia, structured workshops,
presentation videotaping and other initiatives designed to enhance communication
proficiencies. And with a new Institute for Creative Learning and Teaching, Drake faculty will
lead the way in shaping higher education to meet the dynamic challenges of the future.
It is time, once again, to carry on. The power of interdisciplinary centers is undeniable. With a
“think tank” structure and function, students explore new ideas; integrate fields of study; add to
bodies of knowledge; challenge assumptions in a variety of fields; intermingle with distinguished
faculty, alumni and visiting experts from around the world; and find creative solutions that
transcend intellectual and disciplinary boundaries.
Developing Interdisciplinary Centers
In order to ensure that this vital effort has the resources and space necessary, distinctlyDrake calls for at least $3 million in support for each of the following interdisciplinary centers:
Center for Global Citizenship This will increase the ways global
perspectives and issues are integrated
into the intellectual and cultural
experiences of all members of the
campus community.
Center for Leadership This will build on the strengths of the
Donald V. Adams Leadership
Institute by empowering our
emerging leaders and expert faculty
to define, understand, replicate and
strengthen leadership as both a
theoretical concept and a tangible
function in the world.
Center for Speaking and Writing This will provide Drake students with
critical programming and support, and
enhance their communication
proficiencies in all aspects of their
learning experience.
Institute for Creative Learning and Teaching This will enable Drake faculty
members to identify, explore, develop
and share ideas and practices that
open up new and complex subjects to
better student understanding.
Intellectual Property Law Center As a part of Drake’s respected Law
School, the Intellectual Property Law
Center will be expanded to serve as
an international research hub; foster
partnerships with leading research
institutions around the world and
bring together judges, policy makers,
industry leaders, attorneys,
academicians and students to explore
cutting-edge issues.

Building our Collective Strength
Strength comes in many forms. Strength of character. Strength of mind. Strength of purpose.
Strength of community. But no matter what form it may be, for colleges and universities, each
one is rooted in the financial stability of the institution.
The Drake Fund provides essential support for the University’s operating budget, enabling us to
recruit the most sought-after faculty and students, retain our outstanding faculty and staff,
provide financial assistance to students in need and increase the professional opportunities
available to students through internships. When you make a gift to The Drake Fund, you help
support the most immediate needs of the University, including scholarships, athletics, the arts,
leadership opportunities, the library and each of our individual colleges and schools. Whether
your gift is designated for the general fund (unrestricted), an individual college or school, the
Bulldog Club, Friends of Drake Arts, the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute, Cowles Library,
scholarship support or support of global citizenship, it enables us to enhance the exceptional
learning experience that we promise to students every year. At the same time, your gift
demonstrates to the world your belief in the mission of Drake and your spirit of philanthropy.
Our distinguished President’s Circle plays a significant role in the health and sustainability of
The Drake Fund. Members of the President’s Circle share a common bond. They have made
Drake and its students a priority and contribute directly to each student’s experiences and
success. More than half of all the gifts to The Drake Fund come from President’s Circle
members. Membership in the President’s Circle is open to individuals or corporations making
one or more gifts totaling $1,000 or more to The Drake Fund. Corporate matching gifts count
toward your President’s Circle membership.
We invite you to become a guiding force in Drake’s mission through giving to The Drake Fund
and membership in the President’s Circle. Your generosity allows Drake to reduce its
dependence on tuition income and build a stronger financial foundation so that the University
is fully prepared to act on opportunities, prevail over economic uncertainties and achieve our
vision of being one of the finest universities in America.
Building our Collective Strength

will help drive and enhance the excellence
associated with Drake and the exceptional
environment for learning that we provide.
