Distance Learning Instructions Period 3 – Chamber Choir Week 5 –May 4 th – 8 th If you have questions about your assignments, please look in the previous week’s instructions before reaching out to Mrs. Shanker. Check the Heritage website, the new website, the google drive, ask a friend, THEN email or send a Remind text to Shanker. Try to reduce the number of emails by submitting your work through the google forms on the new website and uploading files to the google drive folder with your name on it. Mrs. Shanker is eternally grateful for your efforts in this!!! Have you checked your “Teacher Feedback – Your Name” document that is in your turn in google drive folder? This is where I will write feedback on all assignment that I feel like you may need to hear a response. If it was perfect or easy, I may not write anything! This week, I’d like everyone to get caught up. Progress Reports are going out VERY soon, so if you have any late work, please make sure to turn it in to your google drive folder under the correct week. Mrs. Shanker will check it every 4-7 days. Composer Worksheet: This week you will learn about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. - Turn In: The best way to answer the questions is to go to the new website and type your answers directly into the google form. o https://sites.google.com/view/hhschoir-vocalmusic - There are also videos on the new website of Mozart’s most famous works. Listen and enjoy! o “Ave Verum Corpus” o 12 Variations of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” o “Queen of the Night” from The Magic Flute o “Dies Irae” from Requiem Practice Log: § This week is a little different. I’d still like 30 minutes of practice time per week, but now I’m opening up what you are practicing. If you have an A in the Rehearsal Techniques/Practice Log category as of Week 4, I will waive any further practice logs for the semester. That means you no longer have to do these if you have an A in this category. Check the gradebook. § There is no need to practice our current repertoire since our concerts are indefinitely postponed. § I will try to put some new songs up soon to start learning music early for the fall but I first have to figure out who is in which choir and singing which part. (coming soon!) § If you want to practice something as a solo piece for next year’s showcases or you want to start an a cappella group with your friends, or you want to learn a barbershop tag off of YouTube, whatever it is, I’m excited for you! I want you to have the joy of music in your life during this really hard time. Keep singing! § Write in whatever the song is into your log along with how many minutes you practiced and on which days. Then tell me about how it went at the bottom. These are reflection questions to help you think critically about what stage you are at now and what you need to do to improve. § SENIORS: You should be learning “There Will Be Rest” for the Senior Song which we are planning to record everyone individually on Sound Trap and then compile into a virtual ensemble with the band for your graduation ceremony. The learning tracks and sheet music are in the google drive in the “Senior Song 2020” folder which I have already shared with you.

Have you checked your “Teacher Feedback – Your Name” document that is in your turn in google drive folder? This is where I will write feedback on all assignment that I feel like you may need to hear a response. If it was perfect or easy, I may not write anything!

Practice Log:

§ This week is a little different.

§ I will try to put some new songs up soon to start learning music early for the fall but I first have

to figure out who is in which choir and singing which part. (coming soon!) § If you want to practice something as a solo piece for next year’s showcases or you want to start

an a cappella group with your friends, or you want to learn a barbershop tag off of YouTube, whatever it is, I’m excited for you!

Sound Trap: - GET CAUGHT UP!!! - Feedback for Sound Trap projects can be found in your google drive folder. - You can save your project/assignment and Mrs. Shanker will be able to see it and grade it as

long as she is listed as a collaborator. Check this if you did the work but don’t have a grade! - SENIORS – Make sure you have been able to get a good sound from your recording device.

We need to prepare for the Senior Song recording now. If you had any weird crackling or extra noises show up in your Will the Circle project, now is the time to look up the Sound Trap Help pages to fix it.

Sight Reading Factory – Rhythm

- Pass one level with a perfect score. (out of 8 points) - You must work in order. Sort the assignments by name and you can see them alphabetically. - Reference the team SRF chart in the google drive to see your progress. - You must get a perfect score of 8 points to move on to the next level. - If you get less than 8, you will need to review your feedback and ask for that level to be

reset. Sight Reading Factory – Pitch

- Submit your recording for the assignment labeled: “Week 5 – Pitch – Tone Set (in Bb Major)” - Make sure you follow the instructions during the set up.

o v-SO v-LA DO RE (v is the down triangle) - Check your device’s volume level so you can hear the starting pitch and the tempo and the

one measure starting metronome. Final Project

- I’d like everyone to submit a final project to complete that 20% of your grade that I re-distributed after cutting the concert credit. The project is very open to your interpretation and ideas as long as it involves making music. Let your creativity bloom and choose something you can do in the next four weeks. It should be something that will actually take a four week / four chunk process. Here are some ideas:

o Learn to Conduct – I’ve put up some conducting basics videos on the new website. There are many more on the internet. You can even pick a song where you see the conductor and study their movements. Pick a song you want to conduct. Practice and perhaps record yourself every week so you can get feedback from Mrs. Shanker. Submit a video at the end of the quarter.

o Research New Music – I am always on the hunt for the next piece of music to build into a concert set. I have a list of requirements for a year’s worth of repertoire for the HHS choir program. You could help me fill in music for a particular concert, for a particular choir, or get a group project going to fill in the whole thing. I can provide my requirements list and a spreadsheet of all the music I already own because I liked it and you can go on JWPepper.com to find more ideas! The one I always struggle to find is the next year’s THEME SONG!!! Which I think will be so important coming out of Covid-19. We need a good one!

Page 3: Distance Learning Instructions - Week 5...Distance Learning Instructions Period 3 – Chamber Choir Week 5 –May 4th – 8th If you have questions about your assignments, please look

o Recording Project – Use Sound Trap to create a recording. It could be a solo piece or you could make this a group project. Use choir music, small ensemble music, past music, or something totally new! Shanker can provide learning tracks and accompaniment tracks from any past choir songs if needed.

o Develop Your Own Solo Voice – Here’s a fun one where you can pick any genre to work in. There’s musical theater, jazz, classical, pop, and more! Just make sure you have enough to stretch into a 4-week project. That could mean you work on a set of three songs in varied genres. Then record and submit a video performance.

o Create a video or audio recording leading choir warm ups for when Mrs. Shanker is absent or handling something during the beginning of class. You can research new and interesting warm ups on the internet or create your own, but be sure to think through the purpose and pitfalls of the warm up. Make sure you cover the following categories in order: stretching to release tension and open the breathing area, controlled breathing for longer durations, gentle vocal warm ups on open vowels, vocal warm ups using skips or leaps, consonant warm ups and/or tongue twisters (There are some fun tongue twisters from Mr. Fallows class that could be set to a simple musical pattern.), expression vocal warm ups for face and body. Avoid things that would make the class lose focus. Avoid any vocal strain or adding body tension.

o Eric Whitacre’s New Virtual Choir – Go to www.virtualchoir6.com and you can participate in Whitacre’s new VC that just went live on Saturday. He has a brand new piece called “Sing Gently” for this new VC project. You can sign up, learn the song with his tracks and then submit a video recording of yourself to be used in the final Virtual Choir project. Then submit the video of yourself to Shanker for credit. The due date for this one is May 22nd because that is Whitacre’s due date. You must be able to watch his conducting video on one device with headphones while recording video on another device.

- Please don’t feel limited by this idea list, just use it as a starting point to find a project that speaks to you. Individual and group projects are fine. You can even recruit people outside Chamber to be a part of it. Don’t make it too big to complete by the end of the year.

- Submit your project proposal: On the new website is a google form for you to submit your plan. Then get started on it right away! Mrs. Shanker may reach out to you to clarify the plan if needed.

- Due date is finals week. Turn In Checklist: (All work is due on the following Monday, May 11th.)

- Create a “Week 5” folder within your turn in google drive folder “P3 – Name” and make sure your work is sorted into the correct folder so Mrs. Shanker can find it and grade it easily.

o Please name your files with the name of the assignment and your name. - Composer: Mozart Worksheet – Type Answers on Google Form on New Website - Practice Log with at least 30 minutes of practice done. – Put in Google Drive folder. - SRF Rhythm (one exercise that you have not already passed with a perfect score) - SRF Pitch for Week 5 - Sound Trap: Get caught up!
