L AITHWAITE'S THROUGH THE YEARSI have always loved meeting the people as well as tasting the wines. That was how I got so keen on wine 50 years ago. It wasn’t just sipping a wine and thinking: “Wow, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.” No, it was sipping the wine AND having some passionate person tell me all about it and how to get the most enjoyment out of it.

I discovered this first in France, then Spain and Italy and then across the globe. And everywhere I’ve had great people pouring their latest wine and getting all excited about it. That is the tradition that our Roadshow maintains so successfully. Wine isn’t just bottles on cold shelves. It’s you and winemakers and wine advisors getting excited by new discoveries and new vintages. I love it. You will too.

ONLINERETAILER

OF THE YEAR

Welcome to Laithwaite’s Wine Roadshow! We’ve been celebrating our 50th anniversary all year – but the party really starts now you’re here with us in Birmingham! We hope you like being here at the Council House as much as we do.

Today you’ve got the chance to really explore, taste and shop. Best of all, you can meet the lovely people who make your wines. There are more than 70 to taste – whites, reds, rosés, ports and fizz. It’s the ultimate ‘try before you buy’ event.

Our ever-popular Tasting Theatre sessions are here. Make sure you book one – they're included in the price of your ticket! We're testing one or two new concepts too. I love a flutter so my personal favourite is the games room featuring ‘Blind Wine Baccarat’. Get the wines right and win big(ish!).

It’s not just wine either. We also have one of our favourite gins, some incredible cognacs and a tasty range of craft ales for you to try. Plus, you’ll find some artisan producers of superb olives and charcuterie on hand to give you a taste of their delicious products.

Our winemaking teams from our ground-breaking French and Aussie wineries, Le Chai au Quai and RedHeads, are here too.

Don’t forget to vote for your favourite wine. We can’t wait to see which you crown winner at this special anniversary event.

Oh, one more thing: as a birthday treat we're offering you a whopping 15% off ALL wines* at the event. Plus when you buy 12 wines today, we’ll add 3 extra bottles completely free. Take full advantage and stock up for Christmas.

Enjoy the event and come on over and say hi. Let’s raise a glass to the next 50 years, from my family to yours.

Cheers!

But, now for the main event. Roll up ladies and gentlemen for the greatest game in town – Blind Wine Baccarat.Brought to you by Justin and Grant from the Ministry of Taste. The aim of the game is to identify the grapes and countries behind three mystery glasses of wine. We’ll provide you with free gambling chips (and tips and hints if you’re nice to your croupiers!).

If you’re confident about what’s in your glass, dare you go big? Wild gamblers could get wiped out in one go – but fortune favours the brave!

SPAIN

“After introducing the UK to Bordeaux and southern France, Tony drove his van over the Spanish border into Rioja. We’re still finding new delights in this incredible region, including a great range from the brilliant Chavarri family and some gems from the best producers in the region. This is a rare chance to taste some premium wines with age and many different styles of Rioja, including two excellent white wines. We also have a great selection of wines from Artiga Fustel which highlight the best of other regions of Spain.”

“Laithwaite’s has been spreading the gospel of Italian wines and way of life for over 40 years. In Italy vino is all about the relationships with the people tending the vineyards and working in the cellars. For example, every week Cantine Due Palme hosts all of its loyal growers for a chin-wag, an exchange of ideas and a glass or two. Come on over to their stand and do exactly the same. Enjoy some Tuscan hospitality with the Barbanera family and be sure to have a celebratory glass of Prosecco. Cin Cin!”

“Germany’s Pfalz region has a long and proud tradition of making world class white wines. The warmer climate here makes for a richer and riper style of Riesling and I’ve picked out two of my favourites for you to try. The region now also produces beautifully fresh reds from the Spätburgunder grape. Hope you love this style as much as I do.”

FORTIFIED WINES

“The world’s most famous style of fortified wine just has to be Port. Andresen is one of the few remaining independent, family-run producers and you can try three of their most exciting bottlings today. Andresen owner Carlos Flores de los Santos presides over a magnificent collection of aged ports and is ably assisted by chief winemaker Alvaro van Zeller – the former Head of Tasting at the Port Wine Institute.”

LOOSE CANNON BREWERY

The Olive Store was founded in 2005 by Michael Derham, a university lecturer in Spanish, while on a trip to Spain to visit his students. As a Spanish speaker he was able to travel to the rural interior of Andalucía, to discover and bring home the authentic taste of rural Spain. Andalucía alone has the largest production of olive oil in the world especially using the famous Picual olives. The ham and chorizos are produced in Jabugo, a tiny, remote village world famous for its climatic conditions which make it perfect for curing ham from the local Ibérico black pigs which are free range and fed on acorns.
