Directory of employers
www.actuaries.org.uk
For actuarial trainees
2017/18
Some of the companies covered in the following pages offer work placements so
do get in touch with them to find out how to apply. Or speak to your university or
school careers service.
Finally, you can get a head start by joining the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
We’ll keep you updated about the industry and the opportunities as you begin
your search.
International Candidates If you are a candidate residing outside of the UK then you can still use this directory
to look for jobs, work experience or internships. There are many employers with
offices all over the world – these are outlined in the section on each company profile
that says “Locations outside of the UK”.
For the employers in this directory, if you wish to work in the UK you will require
(usually) a Tier 2 visa. This cannot be provided by you or the IFoA; it will need to
be provided by the employer you wish to seek employment with.
There are opportunities for international candidates in the UK. If an employer takes
on candidates from outside the UK then they will say ‘yes’ in the section that says
‘we consider international candidates’.
If you have any questions with regards to the visa process in your job hunt, then
please contact the recruitment team of the company you are seeking employment
for or the university that you are studying at.
If you wish to speak to someone in the country that you reside in, then please
contact the Careers Team at [email protected] to speak to a
Career Ambassador.
Please note that this list of employers is not a comprehensive list, there will
be other companies who employ actuaries in the UK and globally.
What do actuaries do?
Actuaries are people who’ve turned their love of numbers into a rewarding and
challenging career. They are business professionals who assess the financial impact
of risk and uncertainty. They have a deep understanding of finance and business and
model the world around them, evaluating the likely impact of future events.
Their advice is essential to many industries, including banking and investments,
insurance, healthcare and pensions, where a single decision can have a major
financial impact or affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. It’s a
vital role with a lot of responsibility. That’s why actuaries are so highly regarded,
sought after and rewarded.
What qualifications will you need?
You will need a good grade in A level or Scottish Higher maths and usually a good
degree in a numerate subject such as mathematics, statistics, sciences or economics.
Once you’ve joined a firm, like one of those included in this directory, you’ll continue
to develop your skills and knowledge and sit our professional exams. This usually
takes between three and six years.
Where to start
Work placements are invaluable if you are to gain a real understanding of the role
of an actuary in deciding whether it’s the right career for you.
2 Institute and Faculty of Actuaries www.actuaries.org.uk 3
Thanks for picking up our directory. We’ve put it together to showcase some of the businesses you could work for as an actuary and we’ve given some young actuaries the chance to tell you what their working life looks like from the inside.

APR provides high-quality actuarial solutions across a wide spectrum of insurance companies and other financial institutions. These solutions take the form of interim support to clients on a range of actuarial projects, and training and consultancy services to address specific client needs. We take on only the most talented graduates and support them with extensive, in-depth and ongoing training throughout their APR career.
Location: LondonUniversity: CambridgeCourse: Mathematics
What made you choose APR? “I joined APR in autumn 2016, having spent two years following my graduation working as a maths teacher. Coming from a mathematical background, the actuarial profession was always a career I’d considered; I was attracted to APR because as a growing company with a high-calibre actuarial team, it offered excellent opportunities to develop professionally and qualify quickly.”
How did you find the application process? “The process was refreshingly quick and easy. I sent in my CV and a cover letter, and was invited to complete an online numerical test. Following this was a telephone interview with a partner of the company, and finally
an assessment centre. Compared with other recruitment routes I’d experienced, the entire process was genuinely enjoyable and confirmed to me that APR was where I wanted to launch my actuarial career.”
What makes APR different from other companies? “Two things that stand out for me at APR are the quality of training and the variety of work available. There is a real focus on personal development and through APR’s vast technical library, their graduates quickly become proficient in the skills our clients most require. This comprises of technical training courses including VBA, SQL and Excel, as well as industry knowledge modules.
The unique nature of APR’s graduate programme, where we complete short-term project placements at clients across the UK, has allowed me to get involved with a broad range of work since I joined. I began my first client project within a month of joining the company, analysing reserving data for a bulk annuity provider. Following that, I’ve spent time at APR offices developing my technical skills further and started at my second client working on a systems migration project, developing a retirement company’s actuarial projection platform. I doubt I’d have been able to gain such early exposure to different aspects of actuarial projects in a more conventional company.”

Job title: Actuarial AnalystLocation: LondonPractice area: Actuarial – Pensions Consulting University: Queen Mary University of LondonCourse: Mathematics with Psychology
What attracted you to the Aon Graduate Programme? “I initially applied for the summer internship at Aon which I completed after my second year at university. I was attracted to the prospect of studying and working simultaneously. The positive climate I experienced during my internship was the determining factor in my decision to accept the graduate role.”
What have you learnt in your time at Aon? “I have gained a lot of technical knowledge in the pension field and learned what is important when monitoring the funding level of pension schemes. Furthermore I have improved my understanding of the design of different pension schemes and how we can improve and modify this whilst taking the legislation and member’s interests into account.”
What does a typical day look like for you? “I typically start my day between 8am and 9am (we have flexible working hours so this is my individual choice) and on a typical day I will spent about 8 hours working. I have
a choice to work either from home (or a regional office) or in the London office, where I have to be at least 3 days a week. Most days are split between meeting people for catch ups or delegating and being delegated work as well as desktop and some non-desktop based work. On top of that I have regular study days and occasional training days so on average I am in the office and at my desk about 50% of my weekly hours.”
What have you enjoyed most about your Graduate Programme? “It is great how many people you meet. Especially as there are so many other young people in the office it has a bit of a “back to school” feeling. You have lunch with your friends in the office and there is lots of opportunity to socialise in and out of the office. I also enjoy my free-time a lot and this might sound strange but being on a well organised graduate scheme means that when you leave the office you are actually free (apart from study periods). During university I had two part time jobs and in a way work was never ending; now I can enjoy my evenings and weekends when I leave the office.”

Job title: Actuarial AnalystLocation: Reigate, SurreyPractice area: General InsuranceUniversity: Cass Business SchoolCourse: BSc Actuarial Science with Foundation and Placement
“I joined esure in September 2016, having graduated with a degree in Actuarial Science from Cass Business School. Having worked for a life insurance company during my
placement year, I was keen to explore the General Insurance sector to widen my experience.
esure appealed to me as it is a well-known insurer in the market. I was certain that I will be supported for the challenges that come with the role, but more importantly, I felt valued when I received an offer shortly after the final interview. They also provide generous study support for the actuarial exams, which includes full financial support and study days.
I work as part of the actuarial team which is mainly focussed on reserving, both on an IFRS and Solvency II basis. This involves calculating the quarterly reserves through the use of specialist modelling software and spreadsheets. The core stages of the analysis are broken into data manipulation, setting and justifying assumptions and then explain the results to the business. The fast paced nature of personal lines business means that there are always new and stimulating challenges. This provides me with endless learning opportunities.
The Actuarial team consists of the Chief Actuary, Actuarial Managers and Actuarial Students which provides the opportunity for me to learn from their experience and pass this on to new joiners. It is also essential to communicate effectively with the team and work together as a team.
Within esure there are also actuaries across other areas such as pricing and risk management. Part of the role is also to work alongside these departments which illustrate the importance of communicating efficiently. This has allowed me to be widely exposed to other areas of business.”
Job title: ActuaryLocation: LeedsPractice area: Pensions – trustee consultingUniversity: DurhamCourse: Bachelor of Mathematics
I joined Barnett Waddingham in 2009 straight from university and qualified as an actuary in 2013.
What do you enjoy most about your job? “The variety. Working as a consultant allowed me to get involved in lots of different projects from day one and as a result no two days are the same. Being able to apply the technical skills I’ve developed to solve problems for our clients and then to communicate them in an effective way is very rewarding.”
Why is Barnett Waddingham a good place to work? “I really enjoy working at Barnett Waddingham as they really care about my development and career progression. I am part of a small team (around 15 people) and I work closely with the students and partners across a variety of clients. It is exciting to be part of a growing company and there are plenty of opportunities to help drive the business forward in new areas.”
What do you find most challenging? “It is hard to adjust to working full time and studying for the exams to start with – you really need to be good at managing your time. The study support provided by Barnett Waddingham is very good and being assigned a study mentor from the beginning is a big help. Now I’ve finished the exams the hardest part of the job is keeping track of all the tasks on the go, particularly the progress of tasks I’ve delegated, to ensure there is enough time for the work to be reviewed and issued on time.”
Do you have any advice for the application process?
1. Proof read your application/CV. We have a lot of applications to whittle down so those with silly typos are often the first to go - spelling the Company name wrong is the worst mistake.
2. Do your research. Look online and if possible speak to another actuary/actuarial student to get a feel for the type of work, hot topics in the industry and the qualification process so that you can ask informed questions.
3. Be yourself. We know it’s hard to relax in an interview but we want to get to know you to see if you would fit well in our team so part of the interview process is just having a bit of a chat.”

This will enable you to develop a wide breadth of skills and competencies, with many of these being focussed around the key actuarial processes and techniques. The nature of consultancy promises a fast paced and engaging career.
“I joined the General Insurance practice at EY in 2015 after having graduated with a degree in MMORSE (Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics) from the University of Warwick. A desire to expand and apply my
mathematical/statistical skills attracted me towards a career as an actuary. Additionally, joining a consultancy offered the ability to develop not only my technical skills but also valuable soft skills through regular client interaction.
Within a short time frame I have had opportunities to work on various projects including actuarial modelling and product pricing. This breadth of experience provides an opportunity to learn and understand the different areas within the actuarial domain and delivers a platform for me to specialise based on my interests. Working with a variety of clients allows each project to be unique and engaging, with no two days being the same. Being involved in every aspect of a project from start to finish and consequently being given vast responsibility provides great job satisfaction.
Moreover, EY has a strong focus on development and training and provides endless learning opportunities, from consulting skills during initial induction to insurance specific learning discussed during internal conferences held across Europe and regular office based sessions. Government Actuary’s Department was established in 1919. Today, we provide actuarial analysis for public sector clients throughout the UK. Our analysis enables government to formulate national policy and manage public sector finances.
Job title: ActuaryLocation: Government Actuary’s Department, London University: University College LondonCourse: BSc Mathematics
“I joined GAD in 2013 after doing an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Actuarial Science. My experience with GAD was positive right from the start; the interview felt very natural and away from the assessment I was able to spend time with a recent joiner which helped me to gain a deeper understanding of what it would be like to work at GAD and what the first few years might entail.
There is great emphasis on continued support for learning and development at GAD. While studying for my exams, I was well supported by my team and greatly assisted by the facilities that GAD have put in place for study support such as assigning a study mentor to each trainee.
After recently qualifying, I continue to receive support in developing my skills and knowledge. I feel there is a great deal of trust between actuaries and trainees at GAD and from the very beginning I was given responsibilities and offered challenging opportunities. GAD provide actuarial services across pensions, social security, insurance and investment just to name a few, and this has led to opportunities to work on projects outside of my immediate team and gain vital experience.
GAD work with some of the largest pension schemes in the country and it is incredibly rewarding to be involved in large projects from start to finish. The size of the schemes also affords the opportunity to use a wide variety of actuarial techniques as well as the opportunity to be involved in varied work. While working here, I have been able to gain first-hand experience of how various government departments interact with each other and have also been able to see how actuaries can be utilised for a wide variety of work including non-traditional areas of actuarial work.
From the beginning, I was encouraged to network with both trainees and actuaries across the organisation which proved to be a great learning experience. There is a lot of emphasis here on work life balance and there are an endless number of social events to get involved in.”

Job title: Trainee Actuarial ConsultantLocation: BirminghamPractice area: Actuarial and BenefitsUniversity: WarwickCourse: Master of Physics
Why be an actuary? “I was first drawn to the actuarial profession as I knew I wanted a job where I could use my applied mathematics background, in a setting that felt relevant for day to day life. When I researched careers within the finance industry the actuarial sector stood out to me because of the variety of work you can get involved in and the opportunity to work in a client-facing environment. Actuaries can work in a number of areas including pensions, insurance, life assurance, tax, executive remuneration, enterprise risk management.
I work in pensions and within this sector alone there are many different areas of work, such as defined benefit, defined contribution and investment which means that I get involved with different work each day.”
What is a typical day like for you? “My main duties are carrying out calculations for the pension schemes I support; preparing pension scheme accounts; drafting scheme documents; preparing presentations; and supporting the client with any queries they may have. I really enjoy the fact that my day is varied and can be a mix of calculations or written consulting work. There are also opportunities to attend client meetings giving me a chance to develop a different skillset.”
Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to get into the industry? “The best advice I could give to a student who wanted to become a consulting actuary would be to thoroughly research what actuaries do and build your commercial awareness by keeping up to date with financial news and regulatory changes. This will also give you something to talk about in interviews.”

FIND THE FUTURE YOU. We’re one of the UK’s leading financial services companies. We have over nine million customers in the UK for our life assurance, pensions, investments and general insurance plans. Our people have the ownership to create a positive future where talent thrives and ambition is fulfilled. Flexibility and real purpose are things we promise our people – all underpinned by a great culture and a performance philosophy that’s rewarded with a generous benefits package.
Job title: Actuarial AnalystPractice area: Group ProtectionUniversity: OxfordCourse: BA Physics (2:1)
“With a background in Physics, starting off on an actuarial career was not an obvious choice, but it is one that I am glad to have made. I joined Legal & General in 2015 and have been part of a Pricing team for just over a year. My work centres around investigating what premium changes should be made to our life insurance products.
As an insurance giant, Legal & General has actuarial teams in a wide variety of business areas. From Pricing, Reporting and Investments and Systems Development,
our well-developed rotations scheme allows actuarial students to gain exposure to all kinds of actuarial work. We spend roughly 18 to 24 months with each team we rotate to, which means that by the time we qualify we have received a wide range of experiences, and have a better sense of which direction we want to take our careers.
Legal & General provides an excellent study support scheme. They pay for our exams, subscription costs and study material and also allow up to 45 days a year of study leave. Working and studying at the same time can be a challenge, but alongside the salary increments on exam passes, I’ve found it satisfying to be able to apply the concepts learned to real life work situations.
Day to day work for me involves analysing data using various programming languages, discussing the findings with both my actuarial colleagues and those from the wider business, and writing reports which are used for recommending price changes to our products.
Key to my development at Legal & General has been the support of my team members who are always eager to ‘show me the ropes’, and this is a spirit that I’ve felt exists across the wider company. At the same time you’re given independence to carry out projects in your own way and take on real responsibility at an early stage.”
LCP is an award winning firm of financial, actuarial and business consultants, specialising in the areas of Pensions Actuarial, Investment, Insurance and Business Analytics and Financial Modelling. We help our clients make good decisions, based on insightful analysis, industry expertise, and game-changing technology.
Why an actuarial career? “I wasn’t sure what an actuary was until I started looking for jobs! However, once I had looked into it, I realised that it was the perfect way to use my degree in maths. Becoming a consulting actuary meant that I could benefit from a client facing role as well as analysing problems mathematically.”
Why LCP? “I first joined LCP as an intern and found the experience incredibly useful and enjoyable. During the internship I did a variety of work including individual member calculations and even had the opportunity to go to a client meeting. This was a great introduction to working as a consulting actuary and I gladly accepted the graduate position at the end of my internship.
The thing I like most about working at LCP is the people. You’ll find that everyone you work with is very supportive and always has time to answer any questions you may
have. Everyone at LCP is incredibly friendly and there is a great social committee that organises fun events throughout the year.
Another key part to becoming an actuary is doing the actuarial exams. LCP provide a generous study budget to cover the costs involved and 40 study days a year giving you plenty of time to get ready for the exams. I think starting out can be pretty daunting but at LCP you’re provided with a buddy and a study mentor so you will always have someone to help you with the process.”
Any advice to future students? “Prepare yourself for balancing work and study as they are equally important. Time management is key here, and everyone at LCP is very helpful and understanding when it comes to doing exams as they’ve all been through it themselves.
Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Becoming an actuary can be a steep learning curve and you’ll be surrounded by people with lots of knowledge and experience who can help you.”

Daniel joined NFU Mutual in November 2013 as an Actuarial Trainee. We asked him about his career so far and perspective on NFU Mutual.
What is your background? “I studied Maths at the University of Warwick. Before joining NFU Mutual I worked in transportation projects for 18 months at Amazon EU in Luxembourg and annuity valuation at Canada Life UK for one year.”
Do NFU Mutual support the study of actuarial exams? “Yes. You are assigned a mentor to encourage and help you through the exams. The company also give study leave and pay for exam entries and materials. The study package is regularly reviewed by the study coordinator to make sure it gives you the best chance of passing your exams.”
What have you done since joining NFU Mutual? “I started in the Services team in Life Actuarial. This was a great opportunity to gain business and product knowledge and develop my customer service skills while working with other areas of the organisation. This has helped me to become more rounded. Next I moved to the Financial Risk to work on the Life capital model for
Solvency II Pillar 1 calculations. NFU Mutual obtained “Day 1” approval from the PRA to use a partial Internal Model to calculate capital requirements, which means that the parameters and calculation of capital requirements are developed in house rather than using the Standard Formula. This developed my technical skills and applying actuarial judgement. Now I work in stress and scenario testing, which fits under Solvency II Pillar 2. This is an opportunity to look into qualitative and extreme scenarios that don’t always lend themselves well to quantitative analysis and has also given me exposure to working with the General Insurance business as well as Life. ”
What is it like working for the company? “I feel proud to be working for a company that puts their policyholders at the heart of everything they do. We’re a mutual and our high service standards have won us numerous consumer awards and recommendations. I think that NFU Mutual, being based in Stratford upon Avon, also offers a balanced lifestyle that suits me perfectly. I didn’t really want to relocate to London where a lot of actuarial roles are based so I was pleased when I found a countryside town that offers actuarial careers.”

Redington is an investment consultant and trusted advisor to pension funds and other long term savings institutions. Its Investment Consulting, Manager Research and Asset & Liability Modelling (ALM) teams help leave clients feeling confident and in control of reaching their objectives.
Job title: Associate, Asset & Liability Modelling
“Our investment consultants design strategies for clients, which involves looking at their assets and liabilities and figuring out what mix would be best to minimise their deficit. I work within the ALM team to understand the liability aspect, which involves a lot of spreadsheet calculations and modelling which requires actuarial knowledge.
Day to day, we will speak to a fair amount of actuaries from other companies. We need to speak their language and understand what they do for clients.
Coming from a mathematical background, being an actuary felt like a natural path to take. The job is quite technical and involves a lot of data and mathematical modelling, which is what I studied at university.
Because Redington is not a big corporate (c.100 employees) I have additional
responsibilities which further help my understanding of actuarial concepts.
As a grad who joined three years ago, I have gained a deeper understanding of work I have carried out for clients. It has massively helped me understand the material I learned in books. Now I can actually see those ideas and concepts being applied in real life.
Redington have recently upgraded their study package; we now have 10 days of study leave for CT exams, and 26 days for CA1 exams. Redington also pay for the study materials. Each of us has a study mentor who we can seek advice from.
We also have sessions after exams so people can share their experiences; once the Head of ALM invited someone external who had recently passed a particularly challenging exam to share her experience, which was very helpful.
In terms of qualifying, there are 15 exams. It takes 4-5 years and a lot of commitment, so I have needed to adapt my lifestyle to managing work, my extra responsibilities and my studies.
Redington has a learning culture which also helps. Everyone has been very encouraging and helpful; colleagues have given me opportunities to explore. But whenever I have questions, they are very willing to help. That’s something I’ve learned; always ask questions. If you’re looking into becoming an actuary, just keep asking questions!”

What attracted you to Willis Towers Watson? “I joined Willis Towers Watson straight from university in 2016, having completed an internship with the company the previous summer. Willis Towers Watson is a leading, global company and I was attracted to apply due to its exceptional portfolio of clients, in addition to the excellent training and study support it offers. The internship was a fantastic insight into life at Willis Towers Watson; we were continually challenged and everyone was always happy to take the time to explain work and deeper concepts to you. Experiencing the collaborative work culture and social atmosphere made it an easy decision to accept a place on the graduate programme.
Additionally, I wanted the chance to work in a large office, outside of London. The Reigate office offers the perfect opportunity to work with some of the largest pension schemes in the UK, without the need to live in a city or make a long, crowded commute. Willis Towers Watson
has offices all around the country, so there is sure to be a location that suits you!”
What type of work have you been involved in? “From my first day at Willis Towers Watson I have been working on clients that are household names, which provides a huge variety of exciting work and opportunities; it is exceptionally rewarding to contribute to complex projects for some of the largest pension schemes in the UK. Equally, I have especially enjoyed being given opportunities to take the lead on tasks and find efficiencies and solutions to help our clients.”
What training and opportunities does Willis Towers Watson offer? “In addition to a very competitive study support package, I have been really impressed with the level of internal training that is provided by Willis Towers Watson, both on the graduate scheme and beyond. As a large actuarial employer, we also have a well-established graduate programme, providing training in technical and consulting skills both within our office and on a national level, which is a great opportunity for networking. Joining a company as part of a large graduate intake, means we have a wide network to support each other. This is especially helpful when sitting the actuarial exams as there is always likely to be someone taking the same subject as you. A particular highlight is the opportunity to go on rotation or secondment to other parts of the business. The global nature of Willis Towers Watson in multiple different business areas means there are endless opportunities on offer within our company allowing you to shape your career the way you want it, working with or moving between many different teams in offices worldwide.”

“I was thrilled to join Unum in January 2017. The assessment centre left me with a really strong impression of Unum. Whilst the day was challenging and left me in no doubt as to the standard expected at Unum, I found
everyone personable, engaging and unique. It struck me as the place where I wanted to work.
Since then, my early impressions have been vindicated every day. I love the combination of academic and pragmatic thinking that an actuarial career affords. Working in the pricing team has been a fantastic starting point and allowed me to work closely with underwriting, reinsurance and sales – certainly a wide exposure to different perspectives on the business. My day to day work is very varied, though is typically quite analytical. A recent change to a pricing algorithm provided lots of insight into both the fundamentals of pricing and the practical challenges of implementation. On top of this is interesting ad hoc work to answer specific business questions.
Professional development is taken very seriously by Unum. As well as the generous study package, which does help to maintain a work life balance, I’ve been able to attend industry events, such as a seminar on product development. The actuarial development programme has strong links to Unum US, and I am excited to shortly fly out to Portland Maine (USA) for a team orientation.”

Job title: Actuarial AssistantLocation: ReadingPractice area: PensionsUniversity: Brunel UniversityCourse: BSc Mathematics
“My target following university was to find a career where I could apply the mathematics I had learned. I had experienced working in finance through an IFA’s graduate programme and enjoyed this work. However, I found I wanted to be involved in more in-depth mathematical calculations within finance and pensions. This led me to joining the actuarial profession.
I applied to multiple actuarial firms but was convinced to join Xafinity by the assessment centre. It was unique in that it lasted two days including an evening dinner which provided a great opportunity to meet the other candidates and current Xafinity staff in a more informal setting. The friendly and encouraging atmosphere gave me an insight into what it would be like to work at Xafinity.
It was important to me that I had the time outside of work to pursue hobbies that I enjoy. This is encouraged at Xafinity through a large number of sports and social events and also the generous study package provided. This allows for a good balance between work and study.”
