Digital technology has created a completelynew generation of showers. With a host ofclever features, digital showers are easy andstraightforward to use and can be installedin as little as two hours.

Central to the digital shower’s operation isa sophisticated processor or ‘brain’ – whichis installed in a separate location, awayfrom the showering area. Hot and coldwater is mixed by the processor resulting ina rapid delivery of water, perfectly blendedto your chosen temperature.

So how does the processor control theshower? The answer is a slim concealeddata cable that connects the processor tothe shower control. Even better is theoption of a remote start/stop switch, soforget reaching in, getting splashed andstanding around waiting for the water towarm up – just start showering.

Mixer showers take water from both hotand cold water supplies and blend ittogether to get to the desiredtemperature. To achieve maximumperformance the hot and cold waterpressures should be balanced. Mixershowers are ideal for homes with highpressure systems and an abundant supplyof hot water. Mixer showers generallyhave a faster flow than electric showersand can be made more powerful in lowpressure gravity systems with a showerpump.

Mixer showers can be exposed orconcealed (pipework hidden behind thewall) and have a variety of contemporaryor traditional designs, many of which canbe co-ordinated with taps and accessoriesin the bathroom.

Thermostatic mixer showers have a built inthermostatic mixing valve which maintainsa constant water temperature.Thermostatic mixer showers are alsoadvantageous for homes with multipleusers because the heat control alsoprevents the temperature being impactedby water use elsewhere in the house.

Electric showers take water from the mainscold water supply and heat it using aheating element inside the shower when itis switched on. This makes an electricshower ideal for homes with a limitedsupply of hot water. An electric shower mustbe connected to the cold water, and it alsorequires a connection to an electrical supplywhich is generally carried out by anelectrician.

Electric showers can be used with any watersystem and are independent from the hotwater system, so even if the boiler fails ahot shower is still available. Because electricshowers only heat the water required theyare also economical to run.

Electric showers cannot be used with ashower pump so the flow of water isdependent on the mains water pressure.The higher the kW rating of the shower(7.5kW to 10.8kW), the higher the flow ofwater at the desired temperature. For thosedesiring a higher performance showeringexperience, power showers are availablewhich include an integrated pump.

Shower pumps


Shower pumps boost water pressure and fulfil the demand for a high performance shower; the ideal flow rate is 15 litres per minute. If you have agravity fed hot water system you would also require a shower pump. Installing a shower pump can increase the performance of your shower.

A negative head situation can arise when the store of cold water is less than 300mm above the highest point of the pipework of the supply to theshower (or shower head). A positive head pump is used for water that is already above the level of the pump.
