MARY WEISSTHE SHANGRI-LAHSTEATRE LLOSETAAs a teenager Mary shot to fame with the band the Shangri-lahs in 1964. The band members were made up by two pairs of sisters who found themselves in the limelight while still at school. They had a string of hits on both sides of the Atlantic including Leader of the Pack and Remember (Walking in the Sand). Last year Mary re-launched her music career with the critically acclaimed album Dangerous Game and is currently on tour.If you listen to her now, it is definitely the same sound, maybe just a little bit older, but still with the same feeling. Take a listen at www.digamemallorca.com to then and now.

ScouT NIbLETT + HoLLY GoLIGHTLY & THE bRokEoffSTEATRE LLOSETA

Scout Niblett’s music is frequently minimal in style, many of her songs consisting merely of vocals accompanied by either drums or guitar, which she mostly plays herself. Niblett’s music is often compared to that of Cat Power and PJ Harvey and she is known for her intimate live shows and her blond wig while performing.

Holly Golightly is a former member of the all-girl garage band The Headcoatees, the female incarnation of Billy Childish group The Headcoates. For her solo career, she draws from rhythm and blues, rockabilly, and sounds of the 1960s or earlier. She has released thirteen studio albums of her own and has collaborated with other artists, such as Billy Childish and Rocket From The Crypt, and most notably The White Stripes. Currently touring with her husband as The Brokeoffs.

Kenny Barron

kENNY bARRoNJAzz VOYEUR 2008

The unmatched ability of Barron to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rythms is what inspired The Los Angeles Times to name him “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” and Jazz Weekly to call him “The most lyrical piano player of our time”.

His talent first came to wider recognition when he took the piano chair in the 1960s Dizzy Gillespie quartet. He has gone on to work with hundreds of well known musicians and has been nominated nine times for Grammy Awards and has also been inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame. Performing with Barron at this concert will be bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Francisco Mela.

Sara Baras

13TH MALLoRcA bALLET SEASoNSARA BARASCarmenSara Baras has revolutionized the word of flamenco with a taut, modernist version of this sensual, passionate dance. She set up her own dance company at the end of the 1990’s. This new production is inspired by the legendary fictional character, Carmen, created by Merimée. This Carmen moves away from her author, the original story and Bizet himself in his lyrical version, although she is still tied to the tragic love that symbolises her. Carmen, the show, has the strength of its origins with Flamenco’s effortless ability for expression. Not only does Sara Baras fulfill a childhood wish to play Carmen, she is also director, choreographer & stage designer. A treat for all Flamenco fans!
