Music is a science It is exact, specific; and it demands exact acoustics. A conductor's full score is a chart, a graph which indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of time.

Music is mathematical It is rhythmically based on the subdivision of time into fractions which must be demonstrated instantaneously, not worked out on paper.

Music is a foreign language Most of the terms are in Italian, German or French; and the notation is certainly not English - but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.

Music is history Music usually reflects the environment and times of its creation, often even the country of origin.

Music is physical education It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek and facial muscles, in addition to extraordinary control of the diaphragmatic, back, stomach and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.

Music is all of these things, but most of all, Music is an art It allows a human being to take all these techniques and use them to create emotion. That is one thing science cannot duplicate: humanism, feeling, emotion, call it what you will.

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind,

flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” ~Plato~

  • PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME

Tonight’s concert represents the culmination of many hours of

hard work, dedication, and true grit. The fourth and fifth grade

students of the Upper Moreland Intermediate School are proud to

perform and share their musical talents. The students who will

play for you tonight have practiced in music rehearsals before

school, lessons during the school day, and independently at home

in order to prepare for tonight’s event. These amazing musicians

are proud to display their musical talents and we hope that you

    enjoy their performance.

On behalf of Upper Moreland Intermediate School, Ms. Brann, Mrs.

Pezzi-Burns, and staff, we hope that you enjoy “Music Fest II.”

    Sincerely,

    Principal

    Upper Moreland Intermediate School

“Music fills the spirit with a panoply of emotions.”

  • DIRECTORS’ NOTE Mrs. Kimberly Pezzi-Burns

    Ms. Laurie Brann

It is our belief that music is an integral part of a complete education. It engages students in individual and group activity, promotes creativity and problem solving, and develops evaluative ability. It draws from multiple disciplines and leads to an improved self-concept, broader cultural awareness, and development of life-long skills.

Upper Moreland Intermediate School’s Music program offers all students in grades four and five the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. In grade five, all students are given the opportunity to experience singing in a choral setting. Students discover and develop their potential through varied musical experiences in listening, performing, and creating. The program’s primary goal is to foster and promote an appreciation and understanding of music. Through a comprehensive appreciation and understanding of music, students learn how to set, strategize, and meet goals. Ultimately, it is our belief when students musically achieve, it teaches them how to become compassionate, independent thinkers as well as life-long learners. The best current practices and techniques taught are regularly researched and updated which will enable students to develop the proper skills and knowledge needed for musical achievement.

Welcome to “Music Fest II.” The performers that you will see here tonight represent the hard work and dedication of the music students at Upper Moreland Intermediate School. Many of the instrumentalists that you will hear have only been playing their instrument for nine months. We are extremely proud of what they have accomplished in such a short amount of time. We would like to thank all of the parents and our Upper Moreland Intermediate School teachers and staff for their patience and unyielding support that they give to these talented young individuals in their quest for musical excellence. Their achievements would not be possible without you.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for giving us the opportunity to share one of our true passions in life; music. These young musicians, who we have tremendously enjoyed getting to know and care for, have worked hard for tonight’s performance. “They have come a long way” and we are very proud of them. We hope that you enjoy this memorable musical experience!

“A grounding in the arts will help our children to see; to bring a uniquely human perspective to science and technology. In

short, it will help them as they grow smarter to also grow wiser.”

-Robert E. Allen – Chairman and CEO, AT&T Corporation

Music, at it’s essence, is what gives us memories.

And the longer a song has existed in our lives,
