The Day’s Schedule
MANITOBA SCHIZOPHRENIA SOCIETYThe Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, Inc. is a mental health peersupport organization dedicated to the improvement of the quality of life for all those personally impacted by schizophrenia and psychosis. Recovery is promoted through engagement, peer support, education, and advocacy by working in a collaborative partnership with those living with schizophrenia or psychosis, their families, and service providers.
CONSULTATION & SUPPORT GROUPSOne-on-one individual and family group consultations are held on a regular basis to deal with the specific issues concerning illness management, available supports and services, and recovery. MSS staff members offer consultation to assist consumers and family members ina non-psychoanalytical fashion. Consultation appointments are available, but no referral is required.
The society has approximately 20 self-help groups throughout Manitoba. These support groups assist consumers, family members and friends. The “Peer Support” group helps people with schizophrenia through methods of empowerment, education and recovery. Family groups focus on the losses family members experience and assist them with effective coping skills. Both the family group and the “Peer Support” group rely on the psychoeducation model. We frequently use material from thePsychosocial Rehabilitation Centre at Boston University.
All of the Society’s consultation and support groups are freeof charge to participants.
Recovery is possible through timely and adequate medical treatmentand management, psychosocial rehabilitation, education, community supports and personal recovery and empowerment.
