Rosario, Argentina. He was the oldest of five children.

~ In 1930, Ernesto was diagnosed with severe asthma.

~ Ernesto's family moved to Alta Gracia, Argentina in

1933.

~ Ernesto began his schooling at home. He was taught

to read and write by his mother.

~ In 1937, he enrolled in primary school where he was a popular student and an

excellent athlete.

~ In 1942, Ernesto began high school at Colegio Nacional Dean Funes.

~ In 1943, his family moved to Córdoba, Argentina.

~ After graduating from high school in 1946, his family moved to Buenos Aires,

Argentina and Ernesto began medical school in 1948.

~ In 1950, Ernesto took a solo 2,800 mile trip through northern

Argentina on a bicycle with a small engine.

~ In 1952, Ernesto began his trip through South America with

his friend, Alberto Granado. They traveled 5,000 miles in 9

months. It was this journey that helped shape Guevara's world

view about the hunger, poverty, and disease he witnessed

throughout South America.

~ In 1953, Ernesto graduated from medical school and traveled to various

countries in South America before he moved to Guatemala.

~ In 1953, following the overthrow of the president of Guatemala,

Ernesto left and moved to Mexico.

~ Ernesto (Che) met Fidel Castro in 1955 and joined his 26th of July

Movement to overthrow Fulgencio Batista, the president of Cuba.

~ Che, Fidel, and other revolutionaries arrived in Cuba in 1956.

During this time, Che lived in the mountains where he set up

factories to make grenades, built ovens to bake bread, organized

schools to teach illiterate campesinos to read and write, established

health clinics, and trained other men in guerrilla warfare.

~ Che was promoted to 2nd in command. He was a harsh

disciplinarian who often shot defectors. While he was feared

for his brutality, he was also known to be daring, intelligent and

an exemplary leader.

~ In 1958, Fidel Castro, Che, and their army gained control


of Santa Clara, Cuba and forced President Batista to flee to the Dominican

Republic.

~ In 1959, Fidel Castro named Che President of the National Bank of Cuba and

instructional director for Cuba's armed forces. Che also traveled the world as

a diplomat promoting Cuban socialism.

~ In 1964, Che addressed the United Nations. During his speech, he criticized the

U.N. for their lack of ending apartheid in South Africa. In his speech, Che also

criticized the United States for their policies towards blacks.

~ In late 1965, Che decided to leave Cuba. He resigned from his

positions in the Cuban government and traveled to the Congo in

Africa to begin guerrilla operations. During his time in the

Congo, Che became quite ill and the revolt there was a failure.

~ In 1966, Che lived in Europe where he wrote two additional

books.

~ In late 1966, Che returned to Cuba for a short visit to see his

wife and to see Castro. Then, he traveled in disguise to

Bolivia where he led guerrilla operations. However, in

Bolivia, Che met much opposition from the campesinos and

was not as successful as he had been in Cuba.

~ On October 8, 1967, Che was captured by Bolivian military

forces and he was taken to the village of La Higuera. On

October 9, 1967, the President of Bolivia, René Barrientos, ordered his execution

despite the U.S. objection (the U.S. wanted Che to be taken to Panama for further

questioning). Che's executioner shot him nine times.

~ On October 15, 1967, Fidel Castro publicly acknowledged

Che's death and declared three days of public mourning. In his

eulogy, Castro stated, "If we wish to express what we want the

men of future generations to be, we must say: Let them be like

Che! If we wish to say how we want our children to be

educated, we must say without hesitation: We want them to be

educated in Che's spirit! If we want the model of a man, who

does not belong to our times but to the future, I say from the depths of my

heart that such a model, without a single stain on his conduct, without a single

stain on his action, is Che!"

~ In 1997, Che's remains were found in Bolivia and brought to Santa Clara, Cuba

and were laid to rest with military honors.

~ Che Guevara was named one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th

century by Time magazine.


**ALBERTO GRANADO****ALBERTO GRANADO****ALBERTO GRANADO****ALBERTO GRANADO** Alberto Granado was born on August 8, 1922, in Argentina.

He was an Argentine-Cuban biochemist, writer, doctor, and

scientist. He was also the friend and

travel companion of Ernesto ("Che")

Guevara in 1952. At the end of their

1952 journey, Granado remained in

Venezuela to work at the Cabo Blanco

Leprosarium. After the victory of the Cuban

Revolution in 1959, Granado received an

invitation from Che Guevara to come to Cuba.

He and his family arrived and Granado

became a professor of biochemistry at the

University of

Havana.

Throughout his

life, Granado founded the Santiago

School of Medicine in Cuba,

authored the biography, Che

Guevara: A Revolutionary Life, and

was an advisor to the movie, "The

Motorcycle Diaries". Alberto Granado died on March 5, 2011,

and is survived by his Venezuelan born wife, Delia, three

children and five grandchildren.

wealth that is produced in a communist society is shared among the

people based on need instead of on their contribution to the work. In

theory, everything is public rather than private property. There is no

free enterprise in a communist state, and education and health care are

provided by the state. The system of government is totalitarian, and the

press is controlled and owned by the state. Communism would not have

begun without Marxism. Marxism is the theory; whereas Communism is

the actual practice. Karl Marx believed the capitalist system must be

destroyed through violent revolution. The current Communist countries

of the world include China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, and Vietnam.

CAPITALISM

Capitalism is an economic system in which trade, industry, and the means

of production are controlled by private owners with the goal of making

profits. Capitalism is a democratic system of government (all eligible

citizens participate in the proposal, development and the creation of

laws). Capitalism is driven by free enterprise and wealth is distributed

unevenly. Education and healthcare are provided by public and private

entities. There is freedom of press, definite class distinctions (upper,

middle, and working), and there is a focus on individuals and on their own

progress in life. Some current capitalist countries are Germany, the

United States, India, Japan, and Switzerland.
