Girls ‘race for life’ for Cancer Research

Two local primary school children, who are cousins, completed the Cancer Research UK ‘Race For Life’ at South Park, Darlington on Sunday 7th June.Faye Stokoe, aged 8, from Coundon, who attends St John’s CoE School, and her cousin, Michaela Fitzger-ald, also 8 from Byerley Road, who attends Timothy

Hackworth School, both ran to raise money in remembrance of Audrey Fitzgerald, Faye’s great-grannie and Michaela’s grandma respectively, who sadly taken by the disease nearly two years ago. They completed the race along side Faye’s grandma, Elaine Dack and Michaela’s mother, Melanie Fitzgerald.

The run was the idea of the young girls who, coming from a close-knit family, were devastated by the loss of Audrey - their first expe-rience of death when they were just six years old.The amounts raised by the four were Faye £350, Michaela £97, Elaine £175, and Melanie £69 for an out-standing total of £691.

Left to right: Melanie, Michaela, Faye and Elaine raised £691 for Cancer Research UK.

Local collectors will become “curators” and show off their own exhibits at the forthcoming Local Collectors Day on Sunday 14th June at Locomo-tion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon.Visitors attending the event can come along and see a range of new collections on display at the museum, where the great collection of railway vehicles will be on show alongside several local collectors own items.Displays on the day will include mechani-cal bygones and working models, doll house minia-tures, local history items, Warhammer models, miner’s lamps and more.If you have a collection which you’d like to display at Local Collectors Day, there’s still time to get involved.

Meanwhile, volunteers at the museum will celebrate the 100th anniversary of electrification on the Shildon to Newport Line (opened on 1st July, 1915) during its ‘Cab It!’ event on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June, from 10am until 5pm. During the event, volun-teers will be on hand to allow access to the foot-plate of NER No. 1 and talk about the electrification line.NER No. 1, which was one of the North Eastern Railway’s first electric locomotives, is permanently on display in Locomotion in Shildon. Christenings celebrated at St John’s Church

The sound of children could be heard from the street as a busy Saint John’s Church saw five babies baptised in ceremonies on Sunday, 7th June. First up, at 11.15am, were Connie Meadows and Zak William Allen, who were supported by family and friends as they smiled

their way through the ceremony. Connie was wearing a dress that had seen generations of her family baptised, whilst Zak looked perfect in a lovely suit, with his big brother Connor looking on proudly. At 12pm there was laughter as little Jack Joseph Gillan

tried hard to avoid the water, he was baptised alongside his cousins Willow Cavanagh and Caitlin Marie Smirthwaite. Celebration was the theme of the day as Rev’d David Tomlinson thanked the families for sharing the joy of their children with the church.

The poster, produced by Durham Constabulary, received over 2.5m hits within 24 hours of going online.

Flyer urging parents not to make kids scared of police goes viralA poster telling parents that their kids should not be scared of the police has gone viral around the world with nearly 5.6 million views. The poster was produced by Durham Constabulary’s media and marketing team and was based on a similar campaign in the USA. It aims to change the way parents talk to their children about the police with the message that youngsters should see their local officers as people that will help them if they are in trouble rather than lock them up if they are badly behaved. The poster features an officer from the Road Policing Unit and it seems his picture is causing quite a stir amongst the force’s Facebook followers. The poster was put on Facebook at the beginning of the month and within 24 hours it had received 2.5 million views. By the end of the weekend it had grown to 3.5 million. The officer commented: “I am flattered by the atten-tion it has received but at the heart of this is a very important message and whatever the reason, I’m just glad this message has

reached so many people. “Children should be taught from an early age that if they feel like are in danger and they need help they can approach an officer

who will reassure them. I would hate to think that parents are telling their kids that we will take them to jail if they are naughty... we’re not that scary!

Iain Boddy, of John Street, Eldon Lane, pleaded guilty to a charge of dishonestly diverting a quantity of elec-tricity when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court. He was also found to be in breach of a twelve weeks suspended sentence, imposed by the court in April 2014.On 6th February, police executed a search warrant at the defendant’s home and found the electricity meter in an outhouse. Over £1100 of electric-

ity had been obtained and during the search, police discovered over 200 cannabis plants being cul-tivated on the premises, although the amount of plants is being disputed by the defendant. After lengthy discussion, magistrates decided to send matters to the Crown Court at Durham, where the 33-year-old is due to attend on 20th August on other charges. Boddy was released on un-conditional bail.

Sivanathan Kandasamy, of Miers Avenue, Hartle-pool, was accompanied by an interpreter, when he appeared before magis-trates at Newton Aycliffe. The 35-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge of driving whilst over the legal limit of alcohol, but only after a lengthy stand down. The court heard the de-fendant’s plea of guilty ran contrary to the advice given to him earlier by the duty solicitor, despite matters having been stood down to allow for further con-sultation. The court heard

that police had followed a white transit van driving in Shildon at around 2am on the morning of 19th March.Officers saw Mr Kandasamy alight from the vehicle after he had parked outside the off-licence store which he manages. On failing the roadside breath test, he told the police that he had one drink earlier in the evening and had another just before getting out of the van. The defendant was sentenced to a driving disqualification of twelve months and fines and costs totalling £415.

Costly window breakCarl Mark Ellis Mackinlay of Thomas Street, Shildon, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage when he appeared before magis-trates at Newton Aycliffe. The court heard that at around 11.30pm on 22nd May, Mackinlay who had been drinking heavily and was on his way home, kicked at the window of the Unique Pizza shop in Church Street, Shildon, where the owner Hussan Yousefan was working. Police caught up with Mackinlay shortly after-wards and the defendant

made no responses in inter-view. The 20-year-old is cur-rently subject to a commu-nity order with supervision, which is due to expire later this month. Mackinlay lives with his mother, who provides food and accommodation but no financial support and, due to sanctions, he currently receives no benefits. Matters were stood down and on returning to the court, the Probation Service reported that Mackinlay’s actions had been reckless as he knew the owner and reg-ularly used the pizza shop.

He tended to binge drink every six weeks or so and this had caused him dif-ficulty, as he suffers with anxiety and depression, for which he takes medica-tion, as well as suffering with a bad back as a result of falling downstairs about eighteen months ago. Magistrates felt that the £600 price tag attributed to the 2 foot by 3 foot window was unrealistic and ordered the defendant to pay £200 in compensation and £150 criminal court charges, as well as imposing a four month community order.

Durham County Carers Support, which provides services and support for carers, is running events across the county in conjunction with National Carer’s Week.

Local carers charity organises events for National Carers Week

A week of events has been planned to celebrate this year’s National Carer’s Week. Durham County Carers Support (DCCS) have arranged information days and events across the County to raise the aware-ness of Carers’ issues and promote communities to become carer friendly.Carers provide unpaid support to family, friends or neighbours who can’t manage without their help. When a community is Carer friendly, every aspect of a Carer’s life, from hospitals to the workplace, is geared towards addressing the needs of Carers.

This means obstacles will be removed to make sure things are done in a differ-ent way so a Carer’s life is made easier. Small changes can make a big difference.A Carer friendly community would include employers creating Carer Friendly policies or a GP practice offering alternative ap-pointment times for Carers who are unable to attend due to their Caring respon-sibilities.Jenni Wood CEO of DCCS said: “We would like organ-isation’s across the County to work with us to build communities which support Carers to look after their

loved ones while recognis-ing that they are individu-als with needs of their own.“We have events all week in supermarkets, GP Sur-geries, Beamish Museum and Durham Cathedral to help us raise awareness across the County.”For more information or to register as a Carer contact DCCS on 0300 005 1213 or visit the organisation online at www.dccarers.org or at Facebook.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club has won the 2015 Ken Welsh Cup after defeating Thornaby in the final. The North Yorkshire and South Durham Premiere Cricket League Division Three Cup Final was played before a good crowd at the Sportsfield, last Wednes-day, on a bright but cool evening. However, having won the toss and chosen to bat, the home side quickly warmed up the spectators with some spectacular striking and running. Skipper Greg Upton (26), Michael Lumley (36) and Bret Upton (82 not out) helped the Railwaymen race to 173 for 4 from 20 overs. At the interval one regular

spectator was heard to say,”Well if they get these, it’ll be one hell of a game.”The massive total proved to be beyond Thornaby, as Rob Nevison (4 for 21), Bret Upton (3 for 19) and Phil Garbutt (2 for 15) dis-missed the Tees-side outfit for 72. League President Chris West presented the Cup to a delighted winning captain Greg Upton and awarded the man of the match trophy to his younger brother Bret. On Saturday, the 1st team’s long journey to Bedale proved to be very worthwhile, as the team returned with a maximum 25 points and closest rivals Norton could only manage a winning draw in their

game with Wolviston. Batting first, the Railway-men again scored over 200, finishing on 221 all out in 49.5 overs, Greg Upton (44), Ben Trotter (48), Chris Young (33) and Phil Garbutt (25 not out) being the main contribu-tors. Rob Nevison (6 for 26) and Chris Young (4 for 31) then combined to skittle out the host team for 88 in under 25 overs. Saturday sees the 1st team at home to Maltby and Monday has the Under 15s away at Etherley. Hopefully the 2nd team will have progressed to the Ray Bell Cup Final, as they were due to play at Blackhall in the semi- final on Wednesday 10th June.
