Introduction Jamkhana (dhurrie or dari) in local language means floor covering mats which are widely usually used during marriages and functions (ceremonies) and in homes during occasions. Navalgund dhurrie (cotton dhurrie) are well known for their excellence in quality of their structure, originality of color and form that makes them unique from other type of floor coverings mats. As per the artisan believes, this craft originated from time of Ali Adil Shah the king of Bijapur of Karnataka. In sixteenth century during the tussle between Deccan Sultanate and Vi-jayanagar Empire in 1565AD, Jamkhana weavers migrated from Bijapur to Navalgund of Karnataka and continued making of this craft. Navalgund or Navelu in Kannada means peacock, it is said that this place was famous for this beautiful bird and later got incorporated as a part of the pattern in the jamkhana.

Floor coverings on floor hold the dirt, prevents slips and falls that can cause injuries. It is flat weaved floor cov-erings or rugs made of twisted cotton yarn which are called dhurrie placed on certain occasions like weddings, personal ceremonies, religious gatherings etc. Jamkhana and Jainamaz are the two styles of floor coverings where the difference is lying of their use and patterning used by two different communities. Mats used by a single per-son for prayers and the other used by a community in the prayer hall.

Each dhurrie is divided into three parts with centre and two ends, where centre is woven with geometric and simplified natural forms and the ends woven in reflected symmetry. Dominant color used is red which is used as the background in most of the dhurrie, yellow to set the other colors to place within it, green, black and white are used as accenting colors. Placing of the colored yarns (threads) in variations led to the pattern of designs on the jamkhanas. Some of the traditional names in local language of the motifs used in the Jamkhanas are based on the geometri-cal shapes below:

• Badi Ghari (motif): Zigzag diamond shape with double edge.• Nanhi Ghari: Zigzag diamond shape with single edge.• Laheri: Geometrical pattern like a wave.• Phul: Geometrical flower.• Bell: Creeper pattern with zigzag edge.• Chinda: Vertical stripes.• Chunnat: Twill diamonds with extra weft.• Mor (Navelu): Peacock, After coming to Navalgund they started using mor (peacock) as a motif.• Dhara: Horizontal stripes.• Pagadi Aata: Board of a traditional Indian dice game.

Tools and Raw Materials Following are the tools and raw materials used for the process of Dhurrie Weaving:

• Panja/Beater-in: Fork-like device made of forged iron weighing 800gm to 1 kg used to insert the yarns as fine layer.

• Metal Rod: To insert the yarn evenly into the strands of vertical threads.

• Tibni (Pointed Wooden Tool): Wooden pointed cone shaped tool used to guide down the weft yarn inserted to the warp.

• Knife (Chaku): To cut the extra or unwanted yarns (threads).

Cotton threads are the foremost raw material used for making Jamkhana.

Making Process Dhurrie weaving is done on a vertical loom locally called as khadav magga which means vertical or upright loom. Yarns (threads) purchased in Hulkoti in Karnataka and colored in Rona taluk of Gadag in Karnataka. Six cotton yarns are unwound and plied together to form a finger hanks or butterflies to be used as weft. Jamkhana looms are permanently installed in the corner of their house extending along one side of the wall. To which two bam-boo poles (rods) of the warp yarns are tied at the upper and lower extremities. In this the basic character of pit loom are found combined with the vertical loom.

Unbleached cotton yarn of 3/10s (10s is count of yarn) is used in the making of warp yarns for the required width and spread across evenly. Heddles are made by looping each set of warp yarns to operate as the individual shafts to upper and lower the yarns. Weaving is mainly done indoors by the women in the house, where two weav-ers facing each other and work on this loom. Weaver who sits back of the loom operates the heddle raiser and weaves one half of the dhurrie width.

Jamkhana (mats) are woven weft faced where different colored yarns are inserted from the finger hanks moving in one direction and then return in opposite direction. Tibni (wooden tool) is used to guide the weft down its place. Weaver doesn’t refer any reference or graphs but weaves from their experience and memory which gives each dhurrie a human, individual touch. After yarns are inserted completely it is taken off the loom and the extra threads hanging are trimmed.

The cotton threads are segregated for the spinning process.
