OVERVIEW

Indonesia’s modern and dynamic economy is the largest in Southeast Asia. Though rich in natural resources, it is also highly diversified: half the country’s GDP comes from services.

Unlike many other Asian countries’ manufacturing and export-driven economies, Indonesia’s growth is fuelled largely by consumption and labour productivity improvements. The country is also the fourth-largest user of Facebook in the world, providing a promising platform for e-commerce activity. With steady population growth and continually rising employment, Indonesia’s consuming class is predicted to reach 90 million by 2030 – more than any other country except China and India. If growth is maintained, Indonesia could be the world’s seventh-largest economy by 2030.

To achieve this goal, Indonesia is committed to further improving its infrastructure, removing overregulation and other barriers to business and furthering inclusion. The country is also realising its regional and global leadership potential, especially in sustainability resource management and climate change negotiations. This is crucial, as Indonesia holds the third-largest area of tropical forest but is also one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases.

Currently, UK trade with Indonesia is small. Though Britain is one of Indonesia’s largest investors, the countries have less than a 1 per cent share of each other’s market. However, this is being actively addressed: in addition to setting a bilateral trade target of £4.4 billion for 2015, the countries have established a joint ‘Vision 2030 Group’ to improve their business relationship.
