    Friends stealingwriters painpills

Dear Annie: I had sev-eral surgeries during the past

year and needed help fromfriends during my recovery. They have been generouswith their time, caring forme and my three boys so myhusband could work. Theyeven helped with meals andchores. I have paid them incash and gifts to show mygratitude.

The problem is, I caughttwo of my friendsstealing my painmedications. Thefirst incident was soblatant that I imme-diately ended ourrelationship. I thencaught the second

friend skimming afew pills every visit. There is no mistake. After the first inci-dent, I began keep-ing track and it wasclear that two pillswere missing every time thisparticular friend visited. Iknow if I confronted him,he would deny it or blamesomeone else, so I haventbothered.

Now my pills are lockedup, which makes it inconve-nient for me. But I cant seemto forgive or forget. I feelviolated and taken advantageof and cant seem to move

forward. Please advise. --Out of Meds in California

Dear California: If thesefriends are addicted to painpills, they probably couldnot control themselves whenaccess was so simple. Youhave taken the necessarysteps to be sure there is noadditional theft. However, itsounds as if you need to getthis off your chest. If it willmake you feel better, tell thesecond friend that you areaware that he stole your pills.State it as a matter of fact, notas a question, and suggest heget professional help for hisaddiction. Dont argue with

him. Other than an admissionof guilt or an apology, hisresponse is irrelevant. This isfor your benefit, not his.

Dear Annie: My husbandand I play golf once a weekwith three other couples, andall of us go out to eat after-ward. We live in a retirementcommunity with many res-taurants, but we always go tothe same few and always eatinside.

I am cold in air-condi-tioned restaurants, so I preferto eat outside. The others sayits too hot, too buggy, toowindy, etc., so I never get toeat where I like. I think we

should rotate choosing res-taurants so we each get a turnto select the one we want. What do you think is fair?-- California

Dear California: Takingturns is fair, but it will onlywork if the others agree.

So, by all means, ask them. But as uncomfortable as you

are indoors, you can put ona sweater or jacket to staywarm. Those who have aproblem with heat, wind orbugs can do nothing about it.If your golfing buddies prefernot to change the current set-up, we recommend you saveyour outdoor dining for otheroccasions.

Dear Annie: My Heart IsAching for LonelySeniors made a pleafor family membersto visit loved oneswho are in a nurs-ing home. I have asuggestion that hasworked well for us.

Four years ago,my mother had astroke and now ismostly confinedto her home. Weinstalled a set ofnine video tele-

phones that allow Mom tosee the kids and the kids tosee her. I was surprised howwell this works, and the faceto face contact is great. Theyoung kids like to show offfor Mom and let her see theirhomework and projects, andof course, Mom adores see-ing them.

Telephone calls are fine, but young kids dont often

have a lot to say. With a videophone (or Skype or anythingelse like it), the entire familycan gather around to waveand say hi to Mom. It isalmost like being there.

This is particularly goodfor family members who liveout of state. Its worked outgreat for us. -- G.

Dear G.: Technology hasprovided wonderful ways tostay in touch. Thanks for thesuggestion.

When opportunities arise, dont behesitant to pioneer as many fresh pathsas you can in the year ahead. Manytypes of new possibilities could comeout of you working with untestedproducts, endeavors or systems.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) --If you fail to show any gratitude tothose who go out of their way to assistyou, dont expect them to be aroundthe next time you need help. Even asimple thank you would suffice.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) --For the sake of your image, keep acool head if at times you find things tobe a bit stressful. Whether you like itor not, youre being closely observedand judged by others.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- Evenif you are more knowledgeable thanmost of your peers, dont flaunt youreducation in ways that would degradethem just to show off how informedyou are.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- Ifyou allow yourself to become so laidback in your commercial affairs thatyoure lulled into a false sense ofsecurity and carelessness, youll endup taking a bath.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) -- Aproposal submitted to you by anassociate needs to be studied withextreme care. If you fail to do so, you

could unwittingly agree to somethingthat serves his or her interests, but notyours.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22)-- Unless you have the courage tofess up to a mistake, and instead tryto hide it, youll cause more troublefor yourself than need be. Youll beembarrassed when the truth comesout.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec.21) -- Theres a chance that youmight be asked by your peer groupto participate in something youadamantly dislike. Smile and go alongwith your pals, and youll all be thebetter for it.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)-- When faced with some rather stiffopposition where your work or careeris concerned, the best way out isnt tobuckle under, but to toughen up andovercome what youre facing.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)-- Someone might intentionally give a

friend of yours some bad informationin hopes of manipulating him or her.Dont stand idly by and do nothing.Inform your friend of what you know.

PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) --An alliance that is predicated solelyupon a mutual, material interest couldget complicated. In order to avoid acrisis, all parties must pull together.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)-- You might get your own way bybeing aggressive, but youre likely toask yourself afterward if it was worthit, when youre celebrating without afriend in the world.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)-- Dont tamper with arrangementsthat are presently running smoothly.Making a tweak here and an adjustmentthere may satisfy your restlessness butwipe out what you accomplished.
