abitanti , oggi dediti solo in mini-

Le poche tracce del suo glo-
rioso passato che sembra es-
sere stato misteriosamente
inghiottito dal le ombre del la
storia, si ritrovano già nel suo
toponimo; l ’etimologia del no-

che quest’isola nel corso del

lagoon. Mazzorbo lived throu-
gh the many adventures which
over the centuries affected the
Torcello territory, sharing in its
moments of splendour and its
subsequent inevitable decline
as a consequence of the gro-
wing importance assumed by
Venice itself.
Divided by a main canal on
whose banks stil l stand various
buildings in the Venetian Go-
thic style, during the 11th to
14th centuries the island was
home to a major salt-proces-sing industry, and boasted re-
markable mills whose ruins
can stil l be seen today.
On the three islands which ori-
ginally made up the island,
there were as many as tenchurches: five convents and fi-
ve parish churches.
Outstanding among these for
its beautiful marble work was
the Duomo di San Pietro Apo-
stolo, demolished in the early
nineteenth century, which
contained a valuable altarpiece
in gold-plated silver, now lost
without trace. Of these ancient
religious buildings, demolished
Close to the more fa-
mous Burano and ly-
ing along the canal
that joins Torcello and Venice,
the Island of Mazzorbo is a
scene consisting of a few do-zen houses with gardens andvegetable plots, inhabited by
some three hundred people,
of whom today only a few
work the land.
Few traces remain of a glo-
rious past which seems to ha-
ve been mysteriously swallo-
wed in the mists of time;
hinted at in the island's title:
the origins of the name
Mazzorbo stem from the fact
that during the Middle Ages
this island was the Maggior
Borgo, or greatest city - later
corrupted to Mazzorbo - the
most important and popu-
lous island in the entire
northern Venetian lagoon, se-
cond only to the political , rel i -
gious and commercial centre
of nearby Torcello.
Its origins are extremelyancient, as the island was

bell tower of Valverde orSant’Angelo, with its conical
six-sided pinnacle, and the
church of Santa Caterinad'Alessandria.Mentioned for the first time in
the year 783, during the
thirteenth century this became
a Benedictine convent which
received young ladies fromaristocratic Venetian families;the convent was closed in 1806
and demolished soon after, but
the church survived as the
island's only parish church left
standing when the others had
already fallen into ruins or
been demolished. Entered by
a porticoed atrium containing
valuable evidence of the
island's history, the interior is a
single nave featuring a "boat",
or suspended choir stallswhere the nuns could attend
the religious ceremonies wi-
thout being seen, and an ex-
quisite wooden ship's hull cei-ling dating back to the 15th
century. Well-preserved works
of art include the noteworthy
Baptism of Jesus (1572-1575),
by Giuseppe Porta, also known
as "Il Salviati”.
The fourteenth century campa-
nile holds the lagoon's mostancient bell, and one of theoldest in Europe. Dated 1318,
this has a typical elongated By-
zantine shape and a crystalline
tone which evokes in the liste-
ner a story which is past but
which stil l has much to reveal.

Non molto resta di
quando, sul finire del
Settecento, Goldoni

modificate, sono state aperte

per offrire soste nel verde.
Ma sono anche luoghi in cui è

Little remains of theMestre
of the late eighteenth
century, defined by
Goldoni as "little Versailles" forits vil las, gardens and
watercourses. Swallowed up by
the city over the centuries, now
some of these oases, though
much changed, have been ope-
ned to residents and visitors for
green relaxation.
These are also places which
al low us to re-trace signifi-
cant phases in the history of
the Venetian mainland, with
a journey on foot or bicycle
fol lowing an imaginary
"green thread".
Webegin in the citycentre, close
to Piazza Ferretto. Just by
stepping into the giardini delleMura we go back to the Middle
Ages: entering from via TorreBelfredo, we descend to the
former site of Mestre Castle,
bordered on one side by a
section of the ancient city wall
with a small tower, on which a
stone plaque with the lion of
Saint Mark points to the centu-
ries-old connection between
Mestre and the Serenissima.
Turning left from the nearby
Quattro Cantoni, we find the
park of Villa Querini, which
borders the canal along Via
Circonvallazione: the city's first
public garden, where until forty
years ago children could play
and admire the swans on the
pond, a reminder of the fact that
many noble Venetian families
owned luxurious villas on the
mainland, where they would
spend the summer among flo-
wer-fil led gardens, orchards and
vegetable plots.
Today Villa Querini is occupied
by municipal offices and the
garden, which can also be
accessed by bicycle, contains
exquisite sculptures among its
decorative shrubs and tall trees.

vivenza, prima che le forme as-
tratte di un’evoluzione culturale,
questo si trova a Venezia.
Ricorrenze e occasioni politiche,
celebrazioni del patriziato, even-
ti di ogni tipo hanno fornito
l’humus originario e vitale, fin
dal Quattrocento, per una vo-
cazione diffusa a “rapp-
resentare”, via via trasversale
rispetto a ordini e gerarchie
social i .
nord, i l Teatro Fondamenta
critica musicale ital iana.
( venezi a ) MAGAZINE
I f there's a place in the worldwhere theatre has marked
the history of civi l coexist-
ence, before the abstract forms
of cultural evolution, that place
is Venice.
Pol itical occasions and an-
niversaries, celebrations of
the aristocracy; since the fif-
teenth century al l kinds of
events have provided the ori-
ginal and vital humus for a
widespread vocation for
"representation", through
comprehensive respect for
order and the social hier-
archy. So, in an attempt to
focus on what remains today
of that anthropological rich-
ness, we perhaps need to
make an effort, get away
from the main routes taken
by the media, and come to
rest on individuals who are
sti l l trying to reinvent in
Venice, in this age of global-
isation, a concrete relation-
ship with the city and poten-
tial audiences. This is
precisely the case with a sin-
gular venue, outside the
city's most predictable thror-
oughfares and meeting
places. Located at the far
end of the northern lagoon
shore of the same name, the
Fondamenta Nuove Theatre
has carved a worthy name
for itself national ly and inter-
national ly as a venue for in-
terpretations of contempor-
ary l ife through the most
eclectic of manifestations,
from jazz to groundbreaking
rock, electronic to musical
theatre, performance to
dance, video to experimental
theatre, often investigating
l inks with other discipl ines
and multimedia appl ications.
We discuss this with Enrico Bet-
tinello,who, aswell as leading the
theatre since 2008, is also one of
Italy's most respected music
critics.
Q. In recent years, the TFN hasshowcased top-level interna-tional performers, from Mat-mos to Barcelò, Uri Caine toFennesz, to name but a few.How have you managed to"slip" this kind of experienceinto a context like Venice,

To be honest, it hasn't been too
difficult. The city has always had
a vocation ofacceptance for the
boldest kinds of language and
performance, and though many
try (doing considerable harm
along the way), it is not easy to
force it to bend under any kind
ofcultural apathy. Over time the
Theatre has become a symbol
of this artistic courage, and at
the same time a welcoming
place for those who wish to be
part of a dynamic and pro-
gressive audience community,
an essential for anyone, to the
extent that the European Com-
munity itself nowunderl ines the
central role of the spectator.
For musicians from the down-
town New York scene, as wel l as
for young European choreo-

Nuove Theatre is a benchmark
in I taly, and this is confirmation

T he Scuola Grande della
Misericordia was inaugu-rated on 8th September
1261 and took the name
Confraternity of Santa Maria
della Misericordia or Valverde , a
reference to the verdant island
where it was located. One ofVenice's richest institutions, itowned many properties in thecity. Every year the Scuola gave
bursaries to 60 girls from poor
famil ies, and on Easter Sunday,
it freed debtors owing less than
40 ducats. The 1310 building
was next to the church of the
Abbazia in the sestiere of
Cannaregio, but as time passed
and the institution needed more
space, the new Scuola Nuova
della Misericordia was designed,
and completed in 1545 by
architect Jacopo Sansovino.
The hall on the ground floor isdivided into three naves bypairs of columns; upstairs isan enormous salon used as a
meeting room by the
members of the confraternity,
with frescoes from the school
of Paolo Veronese. Some re-
markable paintings were kept
there, and later scattered
following the 1806
suppression, when the building
was used by the mil itary. In the
20th century the building
became a sports facil ity and
the first floor hall was home
for many years to the city's
basketball team Reyer

I PESTRINERI
I pestrineri producevano evendevano latte, formaggi ma-gri, burro, panna e ricotta.I l loro nome deriva probabilmente
dal nome di un tipo di mulino,
“pestrin”, dove lavoravano a gi-
rar la macina delle mucche. Per
poter accedere all’arte i figli dei
maestri non dovevano superare
alcuna prova ma non potevano
aprire bottega prima di aver
compiuto 15 anni.
ne, un contributo annuo, ciò no-
nostante queste venditrici
portarono non poco danno all’arte
perchè la loro concorrenza non
era sempre controllabile e di ciò
esse approfittavano. Anche per
i pestrineri, così come per tante
altre arti, vennero fissate le
distanze minime fra una botte-
ga e l’altra e i posti per la vendi-
ta degli scolli, cioè gli avanzi della
preparazione della ricotta, usati
come purga. Le latterie erano
soggette a continue ispezioni per
controllarne la pulizia e verifica-
re la bontà della produzione.

THE PESTRINERI
The pestrineri produced andsold milk, skimmed-milkcheeses, butter, cream andricotta.Their name probably came
from a type of mil l , the
"pestrin", where cows were
used to turn the stones. There
was no test for sons wishing
to fol low their fathers into the
trade, but they could not
open dairies unti l they had
reached the age of 15. At the
busiest times of year,
seasonal labourers were
taken on, but they were not
considered part of the craft.
The test to take up this tradeconsisted of cooking acauldron of cream andseparating off enough tocover a special plate. Therewere also women who sold
milk from their cows door to

door, and for this right they had
to pay an annual contribution
to the city; despite this, these
women damaged the dairy
trade considerably, as it was
not always easy to control the
competition and they took
advantage of this. For the
pestrineri , l ike many other
trades, a minimum distance
was establ ished between one
shop and the next, and the
places where the scol l i , or
whey left over from ricotta
making, was sold, to be used
as a laxative. The dairies were
regularly inspected to
determine their cleanl iness
and check the qual ity of their
products.

I DOCCIONI
convogliava l’acqua all’interno di
grondaie che arrivavano a scaricare
al suolo. La maggior parte dei
doccioni a Venezia rimane a
testimonianza dell’uso che se ne
faceva nei tempi antichi quando,
come piccole fontane, versavano
l’acqua piovana sui canali e sulle
vie della città.

One of the most characteri-
stic and visible features of Ve-

gargoyles. A gargoyle is theend section of the externalspout of a gutter. I ts functionis to convey rainwater away
from the building so that it

took the form of an upside-

Venice's gargoyles remain as

acted as small fountains,
pouring rainwater into the

I n the infinite variety of typi-cal lagoon boats surely we
must give a focus to the va-poretto. The vaporetto has a

The Vaporetto i s an emblem of

Definiti "vaporini" o "vaporetti"
quando avevano la macchina a
vapore, sono I più conosciuti
perché prestano servizio in Ca-
poppiera dello scafo termi-
nante con un giardinetto
aperto. L'equipaggio è compo-
sto da due persone.
Defined "vaporini" or"vaporetti" (steamboats) when
they had the steam engine,
are those who serve in the
Grand Canal: have a form cha-
racterized by a single bridgefloor, a large cabin with win-
dows that occupy half of the
hul l aft terminating in a smal l
open quarter.
The crew cons i sts of two
peopl e.
MOTOBATTELLI
For example the difference in the
hul ls are minimal , sometimes just
inches. What varies most is the
amount of horsepower and the
flowofpassengers.
Navigation for vaporetti in the
Grand Canal - now as before - is
punctuated by numerous stopsat the typical floating piers for thelanding and boarding of passen -
gers. An the same time they can
appreciate the ski l l of the sai lors
while mooring with the classicnatural fibre rope. But the fleet of
local publ ic transport is not only
comprised of the now known wa-
ter buses.
With different requirements of
transportation within the lagoon,
different types of hulls are needed.I t is worthwhile to see which are
the different types in the fleet of
ACTV, the company that manages
the local publ ic transport in Venice.
