Coordinating and scheduling volunteers is one of the most time-consuming jobs at the shelter. Hazel Jones has served in that capacity since the shelter opened last year. But that’s not the only job she’s done. She served a 3-year term on the Board, has done every job in the shelter, and “wheeled and dealed” her way through town—all for the benefit of ACARF and the ani-

mals. However, at this time she feels the need to take some time off, and has resigned from her responsibilities as Volun-teer Coordinator. We are greatly in her debt for her in-vestment of time and energies. We are grateful to Dawn Sigfu-son who has graciously agreed to assume the responsibilities of the Coordinator.

The danger of publishing individual names recognizing their good deeds is the possibility of overlooking someone. This was the case last week, when there was a name omit-ted on the completion of the shed. Amanda Phillips worked all day to help roof and paint the shed. Should have known better—Amanda is al-ways there when needed. Please accept our apologies and our grati-tude for all that you do.

Jim Smith, longtime supporter and overworked volunteer for ACARF, has been working on the concession trailer since January. His hard work is going to reap huge benefits for those who serve food from the small space. Cus-tomers too will benefit from faster, more efficient service. Although Jeanne Cloud and others offered input as to what would be helpful, Jim applied ad-ditional design elements to offer more counter space for food preparation, and to allow room for two order and two serving windows. Two cabinets which ran from ceiling to counter have been removed and the sink has been moved to the far end. Addi-tional shelving for storage has been added under the food prep area. He’s also done a great deal of work on the wiring and the structure, increasing the safety and hygiene. The trailer has quite a long history; this is not the first time that Jim has worked on it. It was purchased in 2001 after it had been parked—abandoned—for sev-eral years. It wasn’t in the best condition. But the po-tential for fund raising was recognized, and Jeanne became the Queen of the Trailer and its strongest ad-vocate. By pushing, prodding, (probably nagging and whining, as well), and a lot of just plain ole’ elbow grease, it was finally formed into a serviceable unit. Jim converted it from a travel trailer to a food service trailer by stripping it of its bathroom, closets, table and chairs, and beginning again. It took lots of effort, but they began using it in 2001, working every week-end with Kent and Leon Thompson at auctions. After two years they had raised $34,000 and were very weary of being committed every weekend. The Board voted to not follow auctions any longer. There had been no drastic changes since 2001, until

last year when Columbia Metal Products took it into their facility and installed a new roof and water-proofed it, and repaired metal siding on the outside. They replaced the old ceiling and the old serving window was replaced with a new one. However, nothing was done to improve the interior design to accommodate the large number of customers at Farm City Days. Maneuverability was greatly ham-pered in the small space, and there was less than three feet of counter space for food preparation—barely sufficient for one individual to work. That lim-ited order-taking to one person, as two order takers and one food preparer did nothing to please waiting customers. After Farm City Days last year, Jeanne and Ginny Hawk made a list of those things that would aid them. In January, Jim used the list to be-gin, and then made his own magic. He’s not sure how many hours he’s spent working this time around, but he does re-member that he spent two weeks on it the first time. Diebolt Lumber supplied all the necessary materials for Jim to complete his projects. It’s safe to say that many have played a role in the Concession Trailer, but none more than Jim West. All is
