Background

• Strategic agenda since 2005 – Bergforsk (MITU)

• Previous mining research programme 2006–2010, SMIFU

• SFO CAMM (LTU–Swerea MEFOS) 2010–2014

• ETP-SMR 2005– Established EU-policy

Established visionary project (to define a roadmap and SIP)

How we worked

• Based on the SMIFU report, develop a new strategic agenda for the industry sector

• Broadened scope and collaboration – included not only mining industry, but also suppliers and recycling industry

Current STRIM agenda has a 2030 vision and in the SIP, short term goals are implemented

• Work with agenda lead by RTC & LTU, management of the SIP STRIM set up at LTU

• Developed project portfolio (e.g. SMIFU)

• Revisit strategic plan every few years, set up small vision project (SMIFU)

Strategic overarching ambitions:

•Stronger international competitiveness

•Leading centers and clusters for research, innovation and education that will have the prospect of becoming European centers of excellence

•Continued prosperity and sustainability of the mining sector and society

New approaches: •Mining towards continuous processes

•Better methods to characterize the host rock and the ore to maximize the inherent values as well as to minimize non-marketable residues

•Better command of “soft factors”, stimulate improved safety culture and change image of the sector

•Nurture a cross-sectorial transfer of knowledge and experience to master the challenges ahead

Anticipated effects 2013–2016: •Sweden with a main academic node at LTU has become a well-known and appreciated EU research and innovation partner

•The Swedish mining cluster has been strengthened and the technology providers offer new or improved products and services

•The environmental footprint has been reduced by lower emissions and improved resource and energy efficiency
