What was your favorite thing to do when you were 7 years old?

We have the opportunity to work on an incredible variety of healthcare products, services, experiences,

and business models…

Design at GE Healthcare

The real world is not a brochure…

So, WHY Menlo and design thinking?

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what

you believe.” ~Simon Sinek

We believe that teams who embrace a culture centered on human values and

rooted in empathy, create amazing solutions to some of the toughest challenges, and

serve as catalysts and models for transformational change.

Tip Bad Question Good Question Probe

Ask open ended questions

Are you happy with the current solution you have?

What are some of your favorite things about the current solution?

Some of your least favorite things?

Why?

Avoid leading Is that a big problem for you?

How does that problem make you feel when it happens?

Why did it make you feel that way?

Seek stories to make it real

Does this problem happen often?

Can you tell me a story of the last time this happened?

Can you elaborate more? Can you show me?

Dig for meaning & follow unexpected threads

Unpack and synthesize your empathy insights to help scope a meaningful challenge.

Craft a POV“Point of view”

We met…Scared families trying not to fall apart during a hospital visit.

We were amazed to realize…They have to sedate 80% of the children so they don’t panic and can hold still for their scan.

It would change the world… If we could transform the radiology experience into a positive memorable adventure… to truly change the conversation in the car ride home.

*

Outcomes:Child sedation reduced 31%Patient backlog reduced 16 days to 0Patient Satisfaction increased 92%

Original Design Challenge

Create an incubator for clinics & hospitals in India that is cheaper & easier to maintain than traditional Western incubators.

“Design for Affordability”

Stanford d.schoolEmbrace Story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PyY94ssSww

User + Need… We met… desperate Indian mother living in a remote village trying to keep her baby warm.

Insight… We were amazed to realize… most rural mothers don’t have the means to get their babies to the hospital where the incubators are.

Opportunity… It would change the world if… we could help give rural women the means to give their dying premature baby a surviving chance.

POV point of view *

A G o o d P o i n t o f V i e w ( P O V ) …

1. Holds tension• Should intrigue anyone who hears it

• Go for contradictions & disconnects

2. Is Surprising• Don’t end up with a POV that you could have

drafted before the project even started.

3. Doesn’t have to be perfect• Efforts to perfect a POV, often dulls the edge of

your insights

User + Need… We met

Be specific and capture the essence of person you met + their need

Insight… We were amazed to realize

What surprised you the most?

Opportunity… It would change the world if

Frame up an inspired challenge for your team. Do not dictate a solution.

Starting with “why”, and quickly followed by “what”.

Stories are a great way to connect people with ideas, at a human level.
