DECLARINGthe Design Minor

Design Minor

The Design Minor is an interdisciplinary program that spotlights the design process and shows how design thinking can be used as a catalyst for exploration and research. Choosing from a selection of both lecture and studio courses, students are intro-duced to the history, theory, and practice of design across multiple design disciplines.

With the Design Minor students may com-pose their own individual program in which they will:• understand the interdisciplinary nature

of the design process• appreciate the role design plays in ev-

eryday life• experience design thinking and action• explore and expand their own design

interests• understand how to work with designers

in their chosen fieldThe design minor provides an integrated education in design where students en-hance their learning by making connections between traditional design courses and non-traditional views of design.

Des 1101W/1101V:Introduction to Design ThinkingThis course is an introduction to the theories and pro-cesses that underpin design thinking and practice. Stu-dents investigate the interactions between humans and their natural, social, and designed environments where purposeful design helps determine the quality of those interactions, the practice of the design professions, and the power of design in culture.

Des 1111/1111H:Creative Problem SolvingThis course presents classic and new techniques through student activities, research, papers, projects, and exams. The use and mastery of creativity is the goal for this class and this semester. Assignments, lectures, dis-cussions, and projects all will focus on this development of creative skills. This is the course that is the center of student activities at the University; it is the one course that deals most directly with creativity and creation. It is not directly about artistic creation; creativity is needed in all fields including business, engineering, medicine, and sociology. The nature of a student’s university experi-ence, particularly as a first year student, is a unique and different cognitive experience. Students must learn to think logically, utilize their critical thinking skills, explore ideas and to combine, integrate, and re-invent the way they think.
