One goal this meeting was to review design ideas for the ceilings, flooring and walls in the Gathering Space and Multi-Purpose Hall to determine the best direction. 2. Another goal was to decide how to proceed with the Sanctuary doorway. Kitchen: 1. A Type I hood (grease hood) is approved for the cooking area. An exhaust hood is needed anyway, but the Type I hood will allow more flexibility for use without a retro-fit later. 2. A Type II hood (non-grease) is required over the dishwash area. 3. There will be floor drains near the dishwash area and near the 3-compartment sink. 4. Ellis to research if a grease trap is necessary. 5. Quarry tile to be used for flooring, with epoxy grout. Quarry tile is slip-resistant and the small piece sizes allow easier transitions to the floor drains. 6. A 9’ tall ceiling is planned, with painted concrete block walls and vinyl-faced ceiling tile for durability and cleanability. Some areas may require ceramic tile or ‘kem-lite’ panels, depending on the level of cleanability required by the health codes. Stainless steel will be needed behind the stove area, under the hood. 7. Ellis to look at the possibility of accessing the dish carts from the Multi-Purpose Hall instead of just in the Kitchen. 8. Clerestory windows are desired in the Kitchen. Multi-Purpose Hall: 1. A pitched ceiling is desired if possible, which still can be done with a flat roof. Wood is the first choice for the material on the slope. 2. A raised center section with beams would also be acceptable if needed for the budget.

Previous Meeting:

Design Meeting #6 – 11-28-18 (minutes not reviewed)

General:

1. One goal this meeting was to review design ideas for the ceilings, flooring and walls in the

Gathering Space and Multi-Purpose Hall to determine the best direction.

2. Another goal was to decide how to proceed with the Sanctuary doorway.

Kitchen:

1. A Type I hood (grease hood) is approved for the cooking area. An exhaust hood is needed

anyway, but the Type I hood will allow more flexibility for use without a retro-fit later.

2. A Type II hood (non-grease) is required over the dishwash area.

3. There will be floor drains near the dishwash area and near the 3-compartment sink.

4. Ellis to research if a grease trap is necessary.

5. Quarry tile to be used for flooring, with epoxy grout. Quarry tile is slip-resistant and the small

piece sizes allow easier transitions to the floor drains.

6. A 9’ tall ceiling is planned, with painted concrete block walls and vinyl-faced ceiling tile for

durability and cleanability. Some areas may require ceramic tile or ‘kem-lite’ panels,

depending on the level of cleanability required by the health codes. Stainless steel will be

needed behind the stove area, under the hood.

7. Ellis to look at the possibility of accessing the dish carts from the Multi-Purpose Hall instead

of just in the Kitchen.

8. Clerestory windows are desired in the Kitchen.

Multi-Purpose Hall:

1. A pitched ceiling is desired if possible, which still can be done with a flat roof. Wood is the

first choice for the material on the slope.

2. A raised center section with beams would also be acceptable if needed for the budget.

Page 2: Design Meeting #7 Minutes€¦ · Design Meeting #6 – 11-28-18 (minutes not reviewed) General: 1. One goal this meeting was to review design ideas for the ceilings, flooring and

Holy Spirit Parish – Addition and Remodeling page 2 of 2 Minutes – Design Meeting #7 (cont.)

3. There will likely be a drywalled soffit around the perimeter of the room to allow the HVAC

ductwork to come in from above the Kitchen and be routed around the space.

4. The east windows will not be the stained glass windows from the Sanctuary, so the design of

this wall can change as needed. A three window arrangement that mimics the front entry to

the church is desirable.

5. Carpet and/or LVT (luxury vinyl tile) will be used on the floor.

6. Drywall and furring will be figured for the walls. This could be changed to painted concrete

block if needed for the budget, but then areas with texture or sound-absorbing panels or

sound-block will be needed.

Gathering Space:

1. A single octagon in the ceiling with skylites is preferred over the raised, pitched area at the

front doors with skylites.

2. The pitched area at the front door would require a post, which is not desired. The octagon

may not require additional posts.

3. Cove lighting or up-lighting will be explored, with additional light shelves in other areas of the

Gathering Space as well.

4. The ‘Tree of Life’ should be installed on the west wall by the Chapel area, with windows for

backlighting.

5. The west windows should be positioned so outside activities won’t distract people in the

Chapel area. Perhaps tinting or shades can be used on the windows, or the window size is not

wider than the stained glass.

6. It would be nice to do something with the Kitchen door and pass-thru counter to “dress it up”

because its location is very obvious across from the entrance and next to the big doors to the

Multi-Purpose Hall.

Sanctuary Door / Window:

1. The new double door will fit below the level of the existing stained glass window, as long as

the hopper section of the window is removed.

2. There will be a little space between the top of the doorway and the bottom of the window,

which will be needed for a beam to support the window, and framing for drywall finish in the

opening.

3. There are two ways to install the doorway, in the firewall, or on the Sanctuary side with a fire-

rated coiling door in the firewall. This arrangement is desired, as the door can be full glass

and not fire rated in wood or aluminum or whatever is desired.

4. The fire-rated coiling door will be concealed above the ceiling or in a drywall box-out.

5. Both stained glass windows that have fire-wall behind them will be backlit with LED fixtures.

Miscellaneous Notes:

1. Casimir Electric told John K. the majority of the building wiring is in conduit and properly

installed. There are lights behind the altar that are very high wattage and have an asbestos

wrap on the wiring, and the lights and wiring should be replaced with LED. There should be

no ‘knob and tube’ left in the building.

2. Steve and Soua are meeting with Chris B. and a lighting designer to discuss the backlighting

options for the stained glass windows.

Decisions Made:

1. A Type I hood (grease hood) will be installed.

2. A sloped ceiling is the preferred option for the ceiling of the Multi-Purpose Hall, with wood if

possible.

3. An octagon shaped light well will be used in the ceiling of the Gathering Space.

4. The ‘Tree of Life’ will be located on the west wall of the Gathering Space.

5. A fire-rated coiling door will be used with separate full-glass doors at the existing stained glass

window.
