STAFFING The Senior Psychologist, Education position that was vacated when Judy Dougherty was appointed to the Leading Psychology Practice position based in Albury has been filled through the merit selection process with Lyn Bond being the successful applicant. Lyn has started in the position this term and she is based at Deniliquin High School. We welcome Lyn into her new role and look forward to working with her to support our students. In week 5 of this term we will welcome Regan Benson onto our staff. Regan has been appointed on a permanent basis to fill our vacant Industrial Arts position. We look forward to having Regan on board with us at Deniliquin High School. VARIETY NIGHT CHANGE OF DATE TO WEEK 4 9 TH AUGUST We have had to change the date of the variety night from the 2 nd August to the 9 th August due to unforeseen circumstances. LMBR GO LIVE Monday was “Go Live” day for the new system – we are working through a series of thirty- seven steps over the next 4 weeks to set up the new systems and to get all parts of it functioning. This is the biggest change in the office area in about 30 years so there will be some small issues as the staff learn how best to use the new system. We have a guide to follow which means that not all parts of the system are up and running at this stage but the SAP (finance package) is the first part that is being set up. The major change here is that we no longer have our own separate bank account but rather we are part of a central bank account. The school will no longer have a cheque book and all accounts are paid by Sydney either via direct deposit or cheque. The new system will also involve a timetable package which the school will receive training on over the coming weeks. When fully established this program will allow for online subject selection and will assist in the making of the school timetable. HSC HUB Tuesday saw our Year 11 and 12 students, and the staff, receive an introduction to HSC Hub. This is a program that has a series of short videos that cover the key dot points from each syllabus. The school will be doing a trial with this program over the next month before making the final decision whether to purchase the program for our senior students. The feedback which our students and the staff provide will play a key role in the decision of whether we invest in this program full time. STAFFING

The Senior Psychologist, Education position that was vacated when Judy Dougherty was appointed to the Leading Psychology Practice position based in Albury has been filled through the merit selection process with Lyn Bond being the successful applicant.

VARIETY NIGHT CHANGE OF DATE TO WEEK 4

9TH

AUGUST

We have had to change the date of the variety night from the 2nd August to the 9th August due to unforeseen circumstances. We look forward to seeing everyone on the 9th August for what promises to be a fantastic night showcasing our talented students.

LMBR GO LIVE

Monday was “Go Live” day for the new system – we are working through a series of thirty-seven steps over the next 4 weeks to set up the new systems and to get all parts of it functioning. When fully established this program will allow for online

subject selection and will assist in the making of the school timetable.

HSC HUB

Tuesday saw our Year 11 and 12 students, and the staff, receive an introduction to HSC Hub. This is a program that has a series of short videos that cover the key dot points from each syllabus. The school will be doing a trial with this program over the next month before making the final decision whether to purchase the program for our senior students. The feedback which our students and the staff provide will play a key role in the decision of whether we invest in this program full time.

Name: Steph Tasker Years at Deni High School: 2001-2006 Where do you currently live: Coogee What is your occupation and who do you work for: Radiographer, I work for a private practice, Spectrum Medical Imaging, in Randwick. Pathway from Deni High to now: After my HSC, I went to SCU, Wagga, to study Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging). After uni, I came back to Deni for a couple of months until I got my graduate job in Sydney, where I’ve been ever since! Advice to Current Students: Education is so important, but so is life experience. If you’re unsure of what your next move is after high school, wait it out. Travel the world move to a different place, do volunteer work or work experience. Figure out who you are, then what you want to do. Education, whether it be university, TAFE or apprenticeship etc, is about bettering yourself and you have lifetime to do it.

ENGLISH NEWS Welcome back to another exciting and busy term in English. This week we had a number of students take part in the English Competition, testing their understanding of English conventions and their ability to apply their knowledge in a formal examination. We wish all those students luck as they wait for their results. Year 12 is almost at the end of their studies, completing their final units before they begin revision for their Trail HSC Examinations in Week 6. We encourage all students to continue their revision at home. Over the school holidays students had the opportunity for the first time to participate in some webinars, HSC in the Holidays, run through several of the Sydney universities. It was wonderful to see students coming into school to take part in this fantastic opportunity. Many of our junior classes began the term examining Indigenous culture as part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations. Many Year 7 and 8s have been examining the significance and symbolism of the Indigenous flags and discussed their flags importance in Australian culture. Debating continues this term and we hope our teams can continue their winning streak with the Year 8 team defeating Hay in Week 9 last term. Congratulations to the students in this team. Our Year 9s have been practising in preparation for their upcoming debate; we hope they are able to reciprocate the success of the Year 8s. Drama students are busily preparing for their upcoming Variety Night performance. They will be performing their devised script exploring the complexities of adolescence, including crushes, secrets, friendship and internal conflict.

CHINA TRIP During the first week of the holidays, 5 very fortunate members of the Deniliquin High School Community travelled to Guizhou, China on an all-expenses paid cultural immersion program. The 4 students, Taylah, Meg, Georgie and Sid, and 1 very excited teacher, Donna Van Lieshout, joined with 4 students and a teacher from Bundoora Secondary College in Melbourne. The 7-day trip, generously sponsored by the Australian Educational Society and the Edward River Council, was a whirlwind for all who participated. We stayed at Minzu University in Guiyang and were well cared for by staff and student buddies. Staying on campus, we ate all meals at the cafeterias and toured the many facilities. Paper-cutting, calligraphy, dancing, singing and viewing a traditional tea ceremony were all highlights of our time on campus.

We were forced outside our comfort zone on many occasions, having very little spoken Mandarin (although we all knew “hello, goodbye and thank you” very well by the end of our tour), and encountering new and exciting dishes, like fried chicken’s feet, thousand-year-old eggs and lots of dumplings and noodles, even for breakfast. The people of Guizhou Province love spice, so chilli was also a staple part of our diet. We also had to perform a dance and sing a song in Mandarin, all in front of an audience.

We visited the Confucius Academy and dressed in traditional Han/costume, walked the streets of a 600-year-old village and spent the night in a traditional Miao minority village. China is a beautiful country and its people were so accommodating and interested to meet us. We were well looked after and photographed constantly, even by complete strangers. The bond between the Australian students and their buddies was clearly apparent when we exchanged gifts and said our goodbyes. Many a tear was shed and I am pleased to say that contact has been maintained via WeChat; a necessity as platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat do not operate in China.

It was an amazing opportunity for us all and we are so grateful to the AES, especially its co-founder Howard who helped to finance our trip. His vision for education is very humbling; the AES motto “Shaping minds and driving dreams” was certainly true for all of us who attended.

We would like to keep the relationship between Deniliquin High School, the AES and Edward River Council going strong, to not only provide more opportunities to our future Year 11 students, but also reciprocal experiences for students from other countries, including our friends from China.

Taylah, Meg, Georgie and Sid were wonderful ambassadors for our school, town and country. They approached every experience with an open mind and showed respect to everyone they met and the Chinese traditions in general. We had to keep pinching ourselves that we were given this gift and we appreciated every minute.

ABORIGINAL EDUCATION NAIDOC Week celebrations were held at Deniliquin High School on Wednesday 19th July. Mrs Kirk assisted Indigenous students to prepare and cook traditional bush tucker. The food was provided to the whole school at recess. The food included: Jonny Cakes with a variety of jams: Quondong, Lilli Pilli, Rosella and Lime Marmalade, Wattle Seed and Chocolate Chip cookies, Lemon Myrtle biscuits and Kangaroo meatballs. Thank you to Reigan and Darcy for cooking the Jonny Cakes. At the NAIDOC Assembly, Leilani did the Acknowledgement of Country, Mr Warren spoke about NAIDOC Week and the theme for this year, being traditional languages. Bella, Naoka and Billi-Jo travelled to Griffith in Term 1 to learn a traditional dance and they performed this at the assembly. (see photos) Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre provided the school with a copy of the Indigenous Short Films from the National Film Archive; these films were shown at lunchtime. MGoals is a community driven website that promotes local Aboriginal culture. The Indigenous Education Team at Deniliquin High school has now been trained in MGoals and linked into this website. We have contributed to the Wamba-Wamba/Barapa Barapa community page. Part of the MGoals is a goal setting tool. All students at Deniliquin High School will be linked into the program in the near future. It is a great way for them to set a goal, be involved, learn more about the community in which they live and learn more about the culture. You can go onto the website and have a look at our community page www.mgoals.com.au . In Term 2, Ann-Marie Hay and Tracey Page travelled to Albury and attended the 8 Ways - Aboriginal Pedagogy and SistaSpeak training. These two programs will be rolled out at Deniliquin High School in the near future. Deniliquin High School is looking forward to implementing these programs to further support our Indigenous students.

CAREERS NEWS

YEAR 10 SUBJECT SELECTION - WHAT IS VET IN SCHOOLS? With DHS Subject Selection just around the corner, we are spending time in Careers looking at the various opportunities available to Year 10 students. VET stands for Vocational Education and Training, and vocation refers to work or employment. VET programs are designed to give students an exposure to practical skills and an understanding of what it is like to ‘learn through doing’. So, students can opt to do a VET subject while completing their HSC and, in most cases, the VET qualification contributes towards the HSC and the ATAR. There are rules around the number of VET courses and how they count toward an ATAR and these will be explained to students, in full, during Careers classes.

YR 11 EXCURSION The Year 11 excursion to Melbourne (via Bendigo and Geelong) has be rescheduled to October 10-13, 2017 (Week 1 Term 4). The cost is $200 + students will need additional money for meals, other than breakfast, during the 4 days. Students were asked to return their preference sheet by today, Friday 28th July, and begin to start payments next week. This has been a highly successful in past years, with students enjoying the

range of experiences on offer.

FISH PARK PROJECT Have you noticed that the local lagoon system is looking tidy and well-cared for? This has been the view expressed by many local community members. We would like to congratulate Mrs Denny and her hard-working group of Fish Park boys. Together with members from the Local Lands Services and Ian Fisher, the boys have weeded, pruned, cleared and planted vegetation and removed rubbish. This term, they are constructing more fishing platforms to be installed in the Fish Park, behind TAFE. We would like to thank MIL for their donation towards this community project. Well done boys and Mrs Denny!

LEAP LEAP stands for learn, engage, aspire and perform, and is a project run by David Clark from COMPACT at Deniliquin High School every Tuesday. David works with 10-12 Year 10 students, helping them to identify some career goals and work towards making them a reality. Last semester, David engaged guest speakers to talk to the group, and he will repeat this program with a new set of Year 10 students this semester. The program commenced on Tuesday and was well received by all of the students in attendance.

APPLYING FOR TERTIARY COURSES With tertiary application systems opening on-line over the next couple of weeks, Yr 12 students should be thinking about which courses they would like to apply to study in 2018, or beyond if they are having a gap year. Every Monday, during the Year Meeting, Mrs Van Lieshout will show students different aspects of the application process, including applying for special education schemes, accommodation and scholarships. Information for parents will be available on Wednesday 30th August, at the Future Options Night. More information regarding this event will be provided in the up-coming weeks. Any student or parent who has questions needs to contact Mrs Van Lieshout and make an appointment.

VTACMAG

Year 12 students should note that all information regarding applying for tertiary study in Victoria in 2018 is available on the VTAC website at www.vtac.edu.au , on a free App found in the Apple store or Google Play, and some information also published in the VTACmag, which will be available from newsagents in late July with a recommended retail price of $7.95, or online now at www.pocketmags.com.au or the App Store (we have a limited number of copies in the Careers Office too). The VTACmag contains practical information about the VTAC process and preparing for study, in an engaging, friendly format suitable for Year 12 students considering tertiary study.
