The regional centre of the vast Riverine plains, Deniliquin is an oasis on the edge of the outback. Named after the chief of the local Aboriginal tribe, “Denilakoon”, Deniliquin originated as a crossing over the Edward River.

Opposite the shops in the main street is a delightful park, the Waring Gardens, an ideal setting for picnics.

Further along the main street, a lagoon off the Edward River runs adjacent the Island Sanctuary.

Cross the lagoon by the footbridge, which takes you into an area of river red gum bushland, where kangaroos and birdlife are plentiful.

You can walk from the Sanctuary to McLean Beach where there is an area ideal for swimming.
