Presidents’ Corner

Happy New Year Delta Rho sisters! As we let go of 2014 and embrace 2015 remember, you hold the key to your present and your future. Make it a great year spiritually, personally and professionally. As leaders in our profession, Eta State's theme for the year is appropriately "Teachers as Leaders". The Beginning Teacher Support Committee is challenging each chapter to sponsor a beginning teacher (in year 1-4 of her teaching career) to the April 2015 convention.

The teacher you sponsor might be a current member of your chapter or a "possible future member" you are considering. What a wonderful way for a potential member to feel the strength of Eta State and DKG! There will be a special workshop session just for the beginning teachers where they will share stories, laugh, reflect and also receive prizes!! We want to thank beginning teachers for selecting teaching as their life’s work. Let's represent Delta Rho with this challenge! *Reminder: If you missed wishing your BT1 a Merry Christmas, wish them a happy new year.

I look forward to seeing you in February.

President, Delta Rho [email protected]

Eta State President Pat’s Message

Checking Membership Lists

As Santa checks his lists, President Pat urges

chapters to check their member-ship

commitment. “There is no better time than the

present,” President Pat says, “to review the

three focuses in the Eta State overall theme:

‘Together We Are Stronger - Committing,

Collaborating, Celebrating!’ along with the

Eta State theme for this year: ‘Teachers As

Leaders.’” She suggests ways chapters might

commit, collaborate and celebrate, so read the

entire message at http://www.deltakappa

December Bazaar Proceeds

Delta Rho’s half of the proceeds from the December bazaar amounted to $878.75. This will be used to fund Delta Rho’s Recruitment

Grant for a female graduating senior from a Lee County Public School. Recruitment Grant Recipients Where are they now?

Hannah Cowfer, Delta Rho”s 2012 grant recipient, entered Campbell University as a junior and was a May, 2014 graduate. Her area of concentration was elementary education. Having a calling to serve, in August, Hannah traveled to Ethiopia and settled in the town of Soddo. She describes the house she shares with others as having a bare kitchen, by our standards, running water, and indoor plumbing, also different by our standards. Originally, she had said she was open to anything except medical missions. Well, she frequently serves at a rural pregnancy clinic where she may see 40 – 70 women during each session. She checks the baby’s heartbeat, takes the mother’s blood pressure, gives each mother vitamins along with an egg to eat for protein, and a gospel lesson incorporated into each pre-natal lesson. At other times, Hannah is impacting the lives of 20 children ages 6 months to 3 years in an orphanage. She says that she is doing everything in her power to bring the love of Jesus into the lives of the children - without even knowing it, they are doing the same thing in my life. Taylor Waters, our 2011grant recipient, has been a part of a small select number of female East Carolina University (ECU) students in “Sister Talk”, ECU’s first all Women Roundtable from its inception in 2013. The book club meets once per semester in the home of the Chancellor and Mrs. Steve Ballard to discuss a selected book focused on the topic of women in leadership. Books read and discussed include How Great Women Lead by Bonnie St. John, Lean In: Women,

Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg, and the Power of Nice by Linda Kaplan Thales & Robin Koval. These young ECU ladies assessments of “Sister Talk” can be viewed online. Taylor has completed all requirements for an English Major and upon completion of student teaching will have completed requirements for an Elementary Education Major as well. In January, Taylor will begin student teaching in a 4th grade classroom.
