Presidents’ Corner

Greetings, Delta Rho sisters,

Happy “standard” time! We gained an extra hour of sleep! Well, we did for the first night anyway. What will you miss about the “old time”? I will miss seeing that big orange fireball rise on my way to school and the beautifully colored sky. There is so much that we have to look forward to and gain during the colder months. For starters, we have our wonderful Christmas meeting/bazaar with Gamma Sigma at the beautiful and prestigious Pinehurst Resort Members Club and our regional director, Karen Bullard will be joining us! Start making or buying now and don't forget your address labels to put on your "chance slips". Remember to send a warm message of encouragement to your beginning teacher. We can look forward to warm, spiritual fellowship with our Delta Rho sisters. It sounds like we are anything but “standard”! I would like to thank each of you for your warm welcome and support as your new president. It is an honor and a privilege to serve with women of integrity and leaders in education. A big THANK-YOU to Linda Truitt our new Recording secretary.

God's many blessings, Wendy

Wendy Bryant-Motley, President, Delta Rho [email protected]

President Pat’s Message

That “Leadership Look”

President Pat explores what

that “Leadership Look” looks like in her thoughts this month. Teachers seem to have it and DKG members especially possess it. How can we share it? President Pat lists some ways that chapters can foster that “leadership look” in its members and encourage others to take part in leadership roles. President Pat concludes her thoughts by writing, “As we begin to promote Eta State’s theme for 2014-2015, ‘Teachers As Leaders,’ let us share our ‘leadership look’ with those around us and share the excitement of the many opportunities to lead in this wonderful Society and beyond! Together, we are stronger!” Read the entire message http://www.deltakappagamma. org/NC/Presidents%20page.htm.

Barbara Keller attended the Sept. 20 meeting of Gamma Sigma Chapter, held at Belle Meade Clubhouse in Southern Pines. Eta State President, Patricia Taylor was in attendance. Sara Webster, Gamma Sigma’s Immediate Past President, introduced Lynn Harloe Ragsdale, DKG Legislative Coordinator, who presented the program.

Wendy Bryant organized a trip for all 3rd graders at Broadway Elementary to the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh Oct. 1. They were led on a tour of the world with a docent.

Oct. 29 after school, 4th graders and their families, painted the windows with fall and Thanksgiving scenes at Parkview Retirement Village. In October Wendy attended the 2014 North Carolina Art Education Association fall conference in New Bern, NC.

DKG Sisters Tour Deep South

Kathryn Waters and Barbara Keller were part of a group of retired teachers whose annual trip (early October this year) took them on a 10 –day “Deep South” tour, traveling more than 3,000 miles as they journeyed from Sanford, across the southern states as far as Texas, before returning home.

Lee County Literacy Grants Initiative

Delta Rho is adding a new project to its literacy initiative for 2014-2015. An ad hoc committee assigned by past-president Barbara Keller to look at extra funds available for literacy projects developed the proposal. Literacy funds are generated by the proceeds of the Beginning Life with Books Spelling

Bee. Careful use of the funds has provided us with the opportunity to expand how we support literacy beyond providing each newborn baby at Central Carolina Hospital with a copy of Goodnight Moon. After looking at multiple options, it was decided to look at a way to support local teachers with literacy efforts while focusing on beginning teachers in the district. After the membership gave their approval at the October meeting, Linda Smith shared the project with Lee County Schools Superintendent Andy Bryan. Soon the district

curriculum committee will learn about it. Information about the grants will be distributed through the central office to all the schools and will be available online at our website http://deltarhosanfordnc.weebly.com/links-to-delta-rho-documents.html.

Lee County Schools’ teachers will be offered the opportunity to apply for eight literacy grants for up to $200 each. These literacy grants can provide funding for innovative, classroom-based literacy projects in reading and mathematics. Beginning teachers (up to 3 years of experience in the profession) will have priority for up to four of the grants. Grant funds may not be used for field trips. The timeline for grant applications and awarding of grants is as follows:

Application deadline is January 1, 2015

Notification of recipients by January 15, 2015

Receipts for expenses received by March 1, 2015

Reimbursement for exact expenses by March 15, 2015

Recognition of grant recipients as guests o Spelling Bee March 23, 2015 o Delta Rho chapter meeting April 9,

2015 We will continue to update you as we move forward with this exciting new project. Ad hoc committee members are Emily Lucas, Terry Norris, Patricia Pemberton, Reinette Seaman, and Linda Smith.

Spelling Bee Updates Literacy Co-Chair Reinette Seaman is asking Delta Rho sisters for help with the Spelling Bee scheduled for March 23, 2015. She is asking in a way that differs from her usual plea. At the October meeting, she told of her engagement to Stan Stephenson and the need to make room for him in her life. With their wedding scheduled for March 21, she cannot be as active as in years past and will be absent from the event. Literacy committee members, the logical ones to answer her SOS for extra input into planning and carrying out the event, have been specifically alerted to the need. The door, however, is wide open to every sister who will volunteer to become an ad hoc committee member. In any case, a new arrangement will be in place to make the 16th annual Beginning Life With Books event happen!

As far as actual spellers are concerned, the Tramway School Queen Bees are leading the way. They’ve already paid for two teams! A new supply of GOODNIGHT MOON books has arrived (900 English and 100 Spanish) and before long the literacy committee will gather to label them and insert the “Getting Your Child Ready to Read” pamphlets. The International Reading Association no longer sells them, but provides a download PDF that enabled copies to be made at Office Max. With Central Carolina Hospital thus assured of another year’s worth of books, proceeds from previous bees are being put to use for additional benefits to literacy.

Eta State News Educational Foundation Launches

The 100 Challenge
