Presidents’ Corner
Greetings Delta Rho sisters! Spring and Easter are upon us, finally. Daffodils and crocus are blooming despite the cold, ice and snow. This wondrous sight gives us hope of renewal and the promise of new life. It is also a time to come together in genuine Christian fellowship as Delta Rho sisters at our state conference in Chapel Hill and renew our commitment to Eta State and Delta Kappa Gamma. Have you registered for the conference? I encourage you to register by the April 3 deadline. It is truly an honor and privilege to be a member of DKG International. Our state conference will give you the renewal that you need and a few blooms to boot!
Easter blessings, Wendy

International President Dr. Lyn Schmid
DKG News Arrived Did you receive your January/February edition of DKG News the middle of last month? International President Dr. Lyn Babb Schmid talks about the three M’s of membership—meaningful, motivational, and memorable—and the changes our Society needs to make to engage members. She suggests we stop approaching growth from a recruitment position but identify ways to inspire and include members. If you missed her thought-provoking column, you can read it online at https://www.dkg.org/content/dkg -news-janfeb-2015.
Eta State President Pat’s Message
Passionate about DKG “Everyone is passionate about something,”
President Pat Taylor begins this month and says she has witnessed different passions in her visits to various chapters across the state. She writes, “If we are passionate about mentoring future leaders, the result of sharing our passion for leadership may result in future leaders who wish to have the same passion that we have shared. If our passion is our membership in the Society, the result of sharing our passion may be that non-members will see and know more about the Society and may want to become a part of the network of key women educators worldwide.” She also suggests some ways that members can put their love and passion for DKG into action. Preparing for the Spelling Bee
Prospects for the 16th annual Beginning Life with Books Spelling Bee? We can count for sure on 29 competitors! There are a few more teams to whom we’ll grant some leeway if they come up very soon with the requisite rosters and fees.
You Delta Rho sisters are right on schedule in knowing what’s what:
1) The Civic Center will be “open for business” to the decorating team at 12:30 on the day of the
bee—Monday, March 23. The helium tank will be there, thanks to Ty Stumpf. Karen Huey is in charge and will appreciate all the help she can get—both from those of you who have previous experience with balloons and tablecloths and books and ribbons and also from everyone else who can lend a hand for a couple of hours. Show up with scissors, please.
2) Take your food (or send it with a sister) to the Civic Center at 5:30 p.m. so that Melanie Hawes and June Wicker can arrange everything on the serving tables. Claudia Cox, Beth Hart, and Ada James are seeing to the drinks. Take your stuffed Easter bunnies and random rabbits so they can serve as table decorations & carry out the GOODNIGHT MOON theme.
3) Linda Truitt will have judging assignments ready when you arrive. Sometimes adjustments have to be made, so be ready to be flexible. You will see Catherine Crook in her new role as the Bee Bunny.
4) Linda Smith will introduce the grant recipients, as well as work with Bee Master Jimmy Randolph to facilitate the bee.
When the April meeting rolls around, President Wendy and all of you will be able to report a successful 16th! Thanks.

Early Childhood Education Legislative Priority By: Dr. Elaine Jenkins Chair, Ed Law and Policy Committee
One of Eta State’s legislative priorities has been support for NC’s early education programs. An article by Jane Stancill in the February 3, 2015 Charlotte Observer, titled “Study: NC Pre-K, Smart Start give at-risk kids a jolt,” reports that a Duke University study has found that participation in early childhood programs can prevent the need for special education later. The study has been published in the American Educational Research Association’s journal, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis (for those of you who have access!). The study looked at data from the period of 1995 to 2010.
Anyone who has worked with young children knows that teaching in an early education program is very hard work but very rewarding as well. Some of us have watched teachers do magical things with four year olds to make them ready to read in first grade. I encourage you to look for the article on-‐line (http://
www.charlotteobserver.com/2015/02/03/5489832/ study-early-childhood-programs.html) and then to use this information in speaking with your legislators to encourage not only continued support but expansion of the state’s pre-K programs. The Observer reports correctly that not all poor students in the state have access to the state’s pre-K programs. This is one program that consistently has positive measureable results, and no doubt will have a positive economic effect in the long run.

Tech Tip from Kathy: Take Charge of Your Own Learning (Google doc)
We live in a digital age where we do not have to passively wait for education to come to us. We can take charge of our own learning. The amount of information that we have within a few clicks of our fingertips is mind boggling. Use it for your own edification!
