Most people would leave it at that. But notPinkett Smith. Thats because, unlike most

people, the actress-producer and star o TNTs

hit medical drama HawthoRNe, doesnt avoid looking at

    the ipside o things.

My weakness, she goes on beore I can even ask the

question, is, well in having the strength o endurance,

there are certain characteristics you take on that dont allowthe wall to crack and let things hurt you. You know what I

mean? Sometimes, I am not as open as I should be. I can

have a very My way is the only way attitude.

Shes quiet or a moment. I have a lot o weaknesses.

Welcome to the rereshingly candid universe o Ms.

Pinkett Smith, a place where love shines, amily rules and

career is just a natural extension o ones mission in

lie to spread some good in the world. Its a colorul

kaleidoscope o positiveness and it works really well or

the lady, mostly because she possesses something that is

    truly irresistible: Guts.

My grandmother [Marion Banfeld] taught me there

was nothing I could not do, and I honestly believed that,

Pinkett Smith says. Growing up, a little girl rom Baltimore,

Maryland, who was the product o two parents who were

drug addicts, to be able to do what Ive done, really comes

rom my grandmother instilling in me rom day one, that

there was nothing I could not do. She made me believe

that I was the best at everything. So, somebody telling me

I could not do something, was just not real to me.Looking back on it now makes her laugh. Im telling

people, Oh, Im going to Hollywood to be a star, and

theyre going, Hmm dont know how thats going to

work out. Im like, Well, thats your problem. I know how I

    am going to do it!

    And that she did.

Ater excelling at Baltimore School or the Arts and

North Carolina School or the Arts, Pinkett Smith hit Hol-

lywood and by 1990, landed bit roles in a number o televi-

sion shows, eventually capturing mainstream attention in t

    he Cosby Showspin-o, A Different World.>>

Jada Pinkett Smith doesnt inch when shes asked what her

greatest strength might be. Endurance, she says with conviction.

Resilience is probably my biggest strength.

The Smith amily at an event in China during the flming

    oThe Karate Kid.

    Theres always more @ delightmag.co

What ollowed was an empowering evolution, both personally and proessionally. She married ac-tor-singer-heartthrob Will Smith in 1997, and spentsome time creating a name or hersel in notewor-thy ventures like the Nutty Professor, Bamboozledand the Matrixflms, to note just a ew, as she didbehind the scenes as a producer2003s UPN/CWAll of Us, which the couple created and produced, and which loosely resembled their own lives.

She was also one o the executive producers o the2008 tearjerker, The Secret Lives of Bees. Along theway, she and Smith had two children, Jaden andWillowthe actress is also step-mom to Smiths

son, Trey, rom a previous marriage. Its 12-year-old Jaden though, whom

the couple seems to be jazzed aboutthis summer, mainly because they arethe producers o the upcoming Kara-

te Kidredux in which their son starsalongside Jackie Chan.

Funny enough, Pinkett Smithcredits her experience on Haw-

thoRNe or guiding her throughher sons lush, big-screen out-ing, which was shot in China.I can see how more keen, how sharpened my skills hadbecome having had such an

intense our months on thetelevision show.

HawthoRNe is defnitely the perect creativeplayground or her. The popular series, which alsostars Michael Vartan (Alias), begins its sophomoreseason this month. It passionately showcases ahead-strong, widowed chie nurse (Christina Haw-thorne) battling tough cases at work and eventougher attitudes rom her teenaged daughter athome. I call Christina the altruist warrior because

the woman is willing to sacrifce so much or peopleoutside o hersel, Pinkett Smith says o the role.

Shes willing to go to battle. Its a very, very noblequality to have. Its also one Pinkett Smith, now 39, strives to em-

ulate in the real world, too, especially with her am-ily. One o my jobs as the mother o the amily is tomake sure that everybody has what they need; tomake sure Jaden, especially now, is taken care o as

ar as his emotional, physical and spiritual needs, she says with conviction. We do everything as aamily. Our business is a amily business. We do itso that the amily prospers.

That ortitude may be the driving orce behindthe Smiths own noble enterprise, The Will andJada Smith Family Foundation. The Baltimore,Maryland-based charity assists youth in inner citiesand oers amily support, among other notewor-thy services.

For Will and I, it was very important that wegave back to the community in a very grassrootsway, Pinkett Smith reects about the organiza-tion. Being rom the background we come romvery modest ones, to say the leastIve known mywhole lie that i I hadnt had people that reachedout a hand to me, and helped me move orward andattain my dreams, I wouldnt be here right now.

The comment triggers a deep, knowing sigh

beore she adds, As a amily, we help other peopleprosper and try to put good things into the world. We eel like what were here to do is to illuminateamily values, and to illuminate whats great abouthaving amilial relationships.

Fortunately that takes something she alreadypossesses in spades: Endurance.

Her Take OnHawthoRNe:People like Christina (on the show) are modern-day heroes. I wanted to

show an everyday womaneveryday peoplewho dont necessarily get paidthe big bucks or are rewarded, but just because o who they are, it illuminatesthe beauty o humankind. We walk past these people every day. We dontalways know who they are but were blessed enough to get into a situationwhere theyre ready to fght or us. Its quite a git. And probably the best partis that aspect o human nature and connection. Thats what I love most about

Christinaand that she is awed on top o all that. She is, to me, what all o usare in some orm or ashion.

Good MedicineJada Pinkett Smith has the cure or all

woes: being happy. Listen and learn

d!: What maks yu laugh mst?JPS: Probably my husband. I think thats

one o the reasons hes in my lie. When

we rst met, I did not think he was unny

at all. I think it took me a year and a hal

beore I laughed at anything. I dont think

I got his sense o humor. And now, Im

telling you, all day long because

he is just the silliest person on

    the planet. He makes lie

    really un.

    well I just love being

    alone in a warm place

    with my husband.

d!: What has b sm th bst av yuv b

    You gotta take your time.

    Its not about trying to

    The nish line is always

d!: Whats exctng abt WrldCp 2010?

MT:That its in Arica, a countrywith a lot o great players. Aricasinternational team has devel-oped over the last 20 years andit certainly has the right to be ahost nation. To have the biggesttournament in the world in thiscountry is very, very exciting orus all.

    d!: D y have any pnters rfrst-tme vewers?

MT: Youll get hooked by thepersonalities and the drama;emotions run high because everyplayer is representing his country.

    Hot In ClevelandGiving Valerie Berti-

    nelli a sitcom to shine

    in again was the best

    news that came out o

    TVLand last all. Better

    still was that the em-

braceable One Day AtA Time alum would be

    starring alongside Jane

Leeves (Frasier) and Wendie Malick (Just Shoot Me). But

when the news hit that Betty White (The Golden Girls)

was also on board in the networks rst original sitcom,

buzz began to grow. The premise nds three Caliornians

(Bertinelli, Leeves and Malick) on their way to Paris when

their plane unexpectedly lands in Cleveland. Charmed

by the town, they make an impulsive move to rent a

house and stay. The twist? The home comes with an

outspoken caretaker (White). Watch or comedic sparks

to fy. Fortunately, the series appears to have as much

heart as it does good writing, and thats a tricky creative

cocktail to shake when it comes to sitcoms. But here,

you can eel the chemistry because the actresses work

so well o o each other. Best o all, you tend to care

about whats happening to them, a vital ingredient sadly

missing in many o todays network comedies. Thanks to

the series creative team, Suzanne Martin, who penned

episodes oFrasierand Ellen, and producer Sean Hayes

(Will & Grace), Hot in Clevelandseems destined to sizzle

    this summer.

Watch: Premieres Wednesday, June 16, 10/9 pm C, TVLand

Battle of the Wedding PlannersOne would think planning a wedding is stressul enough

without adding a reality TV element to it, but, since we

do live in 2010, almost anything holds a certain allure

in todays new media, and this series has

    enough tenderness and occasional

renetic vibrato to keep viewers in-

    terested. The lowdown: A gaggle

competition and a ew real-lie clihangersas in how

a planner can create a wedding on a $15,000 budget

and theres high drama, indeed. But beyond some o

the modern-day roth, there are a ew things that stand

out here, particularly, the incredible creativity some o

these wedding designers actually possess. And, in a day

and age when those with little talent are rewarded, itsrereshing to discover individuals who are downright

original. This could be one to say I Do to.

servational humor is on display here in a single-camera,

part-scripted series that chronicles Louiss busy lie as

on the reality hit The Biggest Loser. Now, NBC execs

want more perspiration time. Here, the battle is bigger

(literally) as Michaels takes on the obesity epidemic. The

series chronicles her travels across America, visiting one

most important message o all: That

    anybody can make a changeeven

    when you think you cant.

Are We There YetWell, the movie was a hit, so heres

hoping the sitcom version o Ice Cubes

it: Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris).

Terry is the perect person to replace

amily co-exist in some peace. Essence

Atkins (Half and Half) plays Crews wie.

The other bright spot: Family Matters

grad Telma Hopkins is on board. True,

the movie played things over the top,

but with the creative team responsible

or Tyler Perrys House of Payne and

    Meet the Browns orchestrating things

    comed guilty pleasure.

Now that Bill Maherand those ladies

rom The View, o coursehave made

    round-table interviewing a savory treat,

    chances are comedian/actor/producer

Paul Provenza might strike some rat-

ings gold here. The new series allows

Provenza, a guy whos never short o

savage wit, to unleash his creative ban-

ter and opinions in ront o an eagerstudio audience. He wont be alone, o

course, so imagine what could actually

transpire when the likes o Roseanne

But while its true that the number oat cells in your body is determined by DNA, overeatingover a long period o time, especially during theteenage years, can trigger at cells to multiply. And themore at cells you have, the more capacity you have toll them up, and the more likely that youll be obese.

Anyone battling extra weight wantsthe glucagon calling the shots,

    Less saLt = more CaLCIum

Oddly enough, one way to help prevent osteoporosisis to watch your salt intake. According to Journal ofBone & Mineral Metabolism, sodium and calcium areremoved rom our systems using the same mechanism,

and when one molecule o sodium is removed, it takesone molecule o calcium with it! Get smart about saltby reading labels (would it surprise you to know thata bowl o Cheerios has more sodium than a serving o
