Just when it seemed like the trials and tribulations of Harry Potter were at an end, its author has come

up with a whole new way to tap into this magical world. Debuting October 1st, Pottermore.com is

Rowlings exciting endeavor to submerge us, once again, into the tale that took seven books and over

a decade to divulge.

Its easy to see whyHarry Potter is the most successful literary series of all time. Rowlings vivid imagination,

as well as provide opportunities or audiences to connect with emotionally gripping and universally

important themes. A platorm or upcoming and established i lmmakers, the OWN Documentary Club osters

creative voices to bring their stories to mainstream television.

In addition to celebrities like Forest Whitaker, Julia Roberts and Jennier Siebel Newsom signing on or stints

behind the camera, the OWN Documentary Club has star power in ront o it. Rosie ODonnell is a collaborator

or the club, selecting key ilms and hosting specials that stimulate deeper conversations ollowing their on-

air premiere. I love watching every documentary, ODonnell explains. It excites me to know that OWN is as

passionate about documentary ilms and storytelling as I am.

Telling a compelling story each month is only part o the OWN Documentary Clubs goal. The resultant

dialogue and exchange o ideas inspired by the ilms are meant to engage people, get them to care, and getthem involvedmuch in the same manner that Oprahs book club signifcantly changed the reading habits

o the country. And, like the success o Oprahs book club, i the three Emmy nominations or the OWN

some people may not be happy with the truth that was spo

Enlightened, HBO

Laura Dern may have landed the role o a lietimewith the dark comedy Enlightened, clearly one o

the most dynamic, original new shows o the season.

As Amy, a sel-destructive health and beauty exec

whose very public and very humiliating workplace

meltdown sends her packing to a three-month

recovery retreat in Hawaii, Dern simply shines. She

oers an emotional breadth we havent seen on

television in quite some time.

Im madly in love with my character Amy, Dern

quips. I think the aspiration is to be the best o

ourselves. But Amy is very awed, and she eels

everything in an enormous way, and with thosetraits comes disaster at every turn, even i you

mean to aect change in a positive way.

Watch what happens when Amy returns to the

real world and begins to enlighten people

with her newound wisdoms. The series costars

Derns real-lie mother Diane Ladd (as Amys mom),

Luke Wilson and Sarah Burns.

This isnt the frst time Dern has captivated us. She

nabbed a Golden Globe or her recent portrayal as

steely ormer Florida secretary o state Katherine

Harris in HBOs stunning Recount. But long beore

that, even as a young actress in flms like Foxes(1980) and Mask (1985), Derns ability to evoke,

quite believingly in act, everything rom passion

to pathos, has been impressive. A defning lead

role in David Lynchs surreal Blue Velvet led to

other notables like Wild at Heart, Rambling Rose

and Jurassic Park.

Not surprisingly, when shes not in ront o

the camera, Dern is just as determined and

passionate. Shes actively involved in the Healthy

Child Healthy World organization, which educates

parents to take action on protecting children

against harmul chemicalsboth at home and inthe environment.

We know the environment needs help, we know

that our health and well being are in jeopardy,

Dern has noted o the cause. As a mom, I started

turning to the question o our childrens saety and

uture. You can control your childrens environment,

and you can eliminate environmental toxins.

That sounds pretty enlightened to us.
