One of my favorite memories of being a little girl is of hopping in the car with my dad and driving 30 minutes to the nearest small city to enjoy some

Indian food. We’d each choose a few dishes to share, a Mango Lassi to cool down the heat of the curries, and extra sides of chutney and cilantro. We’d eat and chat, delighting in each new fl avor until we couldn’t take another bite. The smell of Indian food always takes me back to those small cafes and touches on a very soft spot in my heart.

Living far apart now, we can’t get together for these meals as often as I’d like, but we do chat on the phone about the Indian dishes we’re making in our own kitchens. Thankfully, many Indian dishes are naturally gluten-free and there are so many unique fl avors, sauces and ingredients that you can fi nd right in your local store to help you bring this delicious cuisine into your own home.

The Sassy Indian has a line of gluten-free sauces, including Tikka Masala and Red Curry. Patak’s is a widely available brand that has a line of all natural gluten-free sauces.

Sides and CondimentsSome of the most delicious parts of Indian cuisine are served alongside the main dish. Chutney, relishes, papadum and fresh herbs are beautiful accompaniments to a meal rich in spices and deep fl avors. Mango chutney is almost like a jelly, and the sweetness adds a whole new dimension of fl avor when paired with curries and masalas. Patak’s sells a line of gluten-free mango chutneys and relishes like chili, lime, garlic and eggplant. Sukhi’s takes its chutneys a step further with fl avors like tomato, tamarind, green chili and ginger. They also have a line of gluten-free pickled items like carrot, mango and lime pickles.

Papadum is a staple in Indian cuisine. It’s almost like a very thin and crispy tortilla, but is usually made with lentil or chickpea fl our and then dried or toasted over a fl ame. It can be eaten as a side, dipped in chutney or relish, or eaten alone as a snack. Sharwood’s sells a plain gluten-free papadum that’s labeled gluten-free, so make sure that’s the one you pick up. Prepared MealsIt’s exciting to see the vast number of ready-to-serve and frozen meals available at the market. Jyoti Natural Foods is a fantastic option because all of their products are naturally gluten-free. They have a line of canned dishes like Delhi Saag (mustard greens and spinach) and Jaipur Karhi (potato dumplings in a buttermilk-based sauce). They also offer heat-and-serve packages of Chicken Tikka Masala (chicken in a mildly spicy tomato cream sauce) and Chicken Saag (chicken in a spinach sauce).

Tasty Bite offers a wide variety of heat-and-serve Indian meals that are gluten-free: Bombay Potatoes, Bengal Lentils, Punjab Eggplant or Spinach Dal. Find these items right on the shelves in the world foods aisle (or its equivalent).

In the freezer section, you’ll fi nd even more Indian dishes ready for you to enjoy in minutes. Amy’s Kitchen has a really interesting Indian Aloo Mattar wrap, which is a gluten-free tortilla that has spiced organic potatoes, tofu and chickpeas all wrapped up. They also have several full meals to choose from like Mattar Tofu, Paneer Tikka and Vegetable Korma. Tandoor Chef has a variety of gluten-free Indian meals, like Tandoori Chicken Wings, Lamb Vindaloo, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Tandoori with Spinach, Chicken Biryani and Vegetarian Vegetable Korma. If some of these dishes are unfamiliar to you, be adventurous and take a stroll through the freezer section. You might just discover something you really love!

Things to Watch Out ForMany companies offer both gluten-free and gluten-containing products, often displayed side by side on the shelves and in the freezer, so be careful. Don’t assume that something as simple as a mango chutney is always gluten-free because there are brands that do contain wheat. This applies to sauces and marinades as well. Double check every label. As always, happy shopping!

Bases The fl avors of Indian

cuisine vary by region, but many of them start

with a base of lentils, rice, chickpeas or potatoes. Basmati

rice is long grain rice that is traditionally from India and therefore the

most common type of rice used. All of these things are naturally gluten-free, so we’re already off to a fantastic start! Also, if you’re not a meat eater, this is a wonderful type of food to explore because many traditional dishes are vegetarian-friendly.

Spices and SaucesIndian dishes often start out with very simple ingredients that are made into pure magic by the unique spices and sauces they’re combined with and the oils they’re cooked in. Ghee is a gluten-free type of clarifi ed butter that is also commonly used in Indian cooking. It has a high smoke point, which makes it ideal for frying and sautéing. The brand I see most often in stores is Purity Farms. Their ghee is also lactose- and casein-free, making it a great substitute for butter.

If you’re ready to experiment cooking some Indian recipes from scratch, you may want to swing by the store and pick up spices like cardamom, cumin, ginger, coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and saffron. Turmeric is another common spice that is deep orange in color and is now gaining popularity as a supplement for its natural anti-infl ammatory properties. You may also fi nd garam masala in your store, which is a blend of some of these common spices and a great shortcut!

If you’d prefer to prep your dish and then save time on adding the fl avor, there are plenty of gluten-free sauces at the market.

The holidays are a time filled with family, food, and admittedly, a little bit of stress. It can be difficult to stay healthy during the holidays between all of the food, cocktails and numerous

celebrations, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can stay healthy despite the holiday parties, cookies and merry drinks. The key is being prepared and remembering that a healthy you is a better-functioning you, which is especially important during the hectic holiday season. Although it may seem difficult to keep on track during the busiest time of year, it is possible. Making time to stay healthy will help you feel your best, physically and mentally, and allow you to enjoy your holiday time even more! Here are five tips for staying healthy during the joyous holiday season.

aim for consistency: Staying healthy isn’t about being super strict or having an all-or-nothing

mentality. Aim to be consistent in your healthy eating and exercise. You don’t have to attach a certain percentage (such as 80 percent healthy, 20 percent treats) but rather, just aim for consistent healthy eating for most meals, most days. Don’t let a treat or cocktail here or there derail your efforts — simply start over at the next meal. One cookie or one day full of cookies isn’t going to destroy all of your healthy efforts!

make it worth it: If you’re focusing on limiting treats during the holidays, it can be easy to get

overwhelmed or to feel “deprived.” Focus on enjoying the treats that are “worth it” to you. Ask yourself: “Is this a special or traditional item that only comes around during the holidays?” If it is then you should enjoy it, guilt-free. If it isn’t, ask yourself if you can have it anytime you want and if you truly “want” it or if you simply feel like you want it because it is there. If you make your treats special and meaningful, you can enjoy them guilt-free and truly indulge.

Be prepared: Sticking to a healthy diet is all about preparation and the holidays are no exception. It’s

easy to let things slip because of the hectic nature of the

holidays, but make time to prepare some snacks, meals or other items. If you’re heading out to a party, bring a gluten-free dish to share that you can safely eat. This way, you aren’t stuck eating less-than-ideal options. Carry some grab-n-go snacks with you in case you get stuck in a situation where there is no safe or healthy food available and stick to your healthy eating plan when you’re not celebrating.

avoid the overhaul: In an effort to look their best, people often decide

to make drastic dietary changes during the holidays. The holidays aren’t an ideal time to make drastic changes or take on difficult challenges since the added holiday stress and busy schedules can wear down your willpower. After the holidays have passed, New Year’s Resolutions take center stage. The month of January, and especially the fi rst two weeks of January, is one of the most popular times for dieting and exercise. Many people make resolutions to lose weight or get healthier and embark on a new diet and exercise regimen on Jan. 1 only to fi zzle out by Jan. 30. So how can you make your resolutions stick and get the results you want? The solution is about setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, which are goals that are:

For example, you resolve to lose a total of 30 pounds this year. Instead of making a grandiose resolution to lose weight, break down your goal and analyze its components to produce a manageable S.M.A.R.T. goal.

S: I want to lose 10 pounds.M: Do weight measurement before and after.A: I will do this by eating healthy meals and exercising four days a week. R: This will help improve my health.T: I will achieve this goal in two months.

Old goal: I want to lose 30 pounds. New S.M.A.R.T. goal: I will lose 10 pounds in two months by eating healthy meals and exercising 4 days a week.

The new goal is much less intimidating, and since you already have a plan, it’s easier to achieve. It’s also important to remember that even if you do have setbacks, you don’t have to throw in the towel. Just simply pick yourself up, start again, and try to fi gure out what caused the setback in the fi rst place. Treat the setback as a learning experience rather than a “failure.”

Another key component to sticking to your resolutions is to have a strong support system of family, friends and others who have similar goals or are willing to help you reach your goals. Having a strong group of people to cheer you on will help you when you are tired or feel like giving up. If need be, you can solicit the help of a trainer, coach or nutritionist to help keep you accountable and get some motivation and reinforcement.

remove the guilt: Trying to stay healthy during the holidays can be a guilt-inducing

endeavor. You may feel guilty for having a few cookies or a piece of cake but in reality, the toxic thought patterns and guilty feelings may do more damage than that tray of cookies. Embrace the holidays and indulge when you really want to and leave the guilt behind. The holidays are about family, celebration and joy — be consistent and enjoy them!

Fogo de Chão is not your standard steakhouse with a salad bar. The high-end chain restaurant, with a

buffet salad bar and other options, happens to be extremely gluten-free friendly.

The Brazilian “churrascaria” steakhouse has more than 20 locations in the U.S. and another eight in South America. The varied meats offered are grilled rotisserie style over a pit fire — a cooking method that’s commonly used in Southern Brazil. There are more than a dozen meats available and only one of them contains gluten: the beer marinated chicken legs.

To start off your visit, consider ordering a caipirinha, known as Brazil’s national drink. It’s made with cachaca, a liquor derived from sugar cane. There are many specialty non-alcoholic cocktails available and an extensive wine cellar as well.

The dining experience at Fogo is quite entertaining. Each diner is given a card or disk that is green on one side and red on the other. When you’re ready for the Gaucho Chefs to bring food to your table, you simply put the disk green side up next to your plate. But be ready: When the disk is flipped to green, a surge of Gaucho Chefs will promptly appear with offerings of various meat.

Food LabelingScotland, like the rest of the UK and much of Europe, uses Codex-standard and gluten-free labeling legislation. Only foods that contain 20ppm or less of gluten can be labeled “gluten-free.” Products that contain between 21ppm to 100ppm of gluten can be labeled “very low gluten.” Coeliac UK sells a fantastic Food & Drink Directory that lists safe gluten-free products available across the country. It would be a good idea to invest in this, particularly if you plan to spend an extended period of time in the UK. They also have an electronic version at coeliac.org.uk.

Roseleaf is a family-run bar and cafe in Leith that has a fantastic allergy menu. Everything is cooked from scratch, using fresh ingredients. Treat yourself to a traditional Scottish breakfast or a bowl of tasty soup for brunch. At dinnertime, choose from a few delicious gluten-free options — and don’t forget the gluten-free rhubarb pie or parfait pudding for dessert!

Wok & Wine in the City Centre is a Chinese restaurant that uses local and fresh Scottish ingredients. Their gluten-free menu features soups, meat, seafood, veggie and rice dishes. It is extremely rare to find a Chinese restaurant offering a full gluten-free menu, so if you find yourself in Edinburgh, this could be your chance

to try a bowl of Hot & Sour Chicken Soup, Crispy Duck, or British favorite, Sweet & Sour Pork!

The Harvest Garden in Morningside is part-florist, part-chocolate-shop, and they stock a fantastic selection of gluten-free treats. The storeowners are lovely, and both the husband and daughter have Celiac Disease, which is why they stock lots of fancy gluten-free chocolates.

Gluten-Free in GlasgowDon’t miss out on a trip to Glasgow on your vacation to Scotland. The country’s largest city, situated on the River Clyde, has beautiful architecture, some of the best bars and restaurants in the UK, a fantastic music scene and plenty of friendly Glaswegians. Glasgow also offers a great variety of gluten-free cafes and restaurants.

My favorite restaurant is located on Glasgow’s Bath Street. The Butterfly and the Pig is a unique restaurant filled with fun mismatched furniture and wallpaper. It’s a relaxing, homey place to have a

drink or enjoy a meal during the day. At night, it livens up with local bands and DJs. Their menu features delicious meals created from fresh, local ingredients. Serving up delicious meals like fish and chips, vegetable frittatas, and bangers and mash, this place is definitely not to be missed. Many dishes are naturally gluten-free and a whole lot more can be made gluten-free on request — even their amazing fish and chips! The restaurant makes its own gluten-free bread for gluten-free burgers and sandwiches, and the staff is extremely well-versed on gluten-free cooking and Celiac Disease.

Dakhin, in the Merchant City area of town, is a fabulous South Indian restaurant boasting an almost entirely gluten-free menu. Their varied menu features chicken, pork, prawn and vegetable dishes of varying flavors and spices. Sides include dosas and uttapams, made with naturally gluten-free rice and lentils, and steamed rice. Everything on the menu is full of flavor and extremely delicious. If you eat here with a group of people, order a huge dosa for the table.

The 13th Note is an independent music venue, bar and cafe situated in the city’s Trongate area. Their vegetarian and vegan cafe features a variety of tasty options for gluten-free diners, including curries, salads, risotto cakes and a couple of brunch options.

The 2 Figs on Byres Road in Glasgow’s West End is another great restaurant offering gluten-free options. The staff will explain which options are safe for you to eat. Their vegetable and coconut curry is particularly delicious and perfect with one of their fantastic house cocktails or an alcoholic ginger beer.

As of this spring, Glasgow welcomes its fi rst 100 percent gluten-free bakery! Wild Flours in the south side of the city does a range of homemade gluten-free treats, including cakes, cupcakes, brownies, shortbread, biscuits and plenty of other yummy treats.

Coffee shop culture is so popular in the UK that it’s almost impossible not to spend a day in the city without stopping for a cup of tea and a cake. In Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as other cities throughout the country, you will fi nd

that many coffee shops offer a gluten-free option or two.

Grocery ShoppingAll of the main UK supermarket chains have a “free-from” section, featuring a good variety of gluten-free products such as breads, crackers, cereals and snacks. Most also have a section of gluten-free frozen goods, where you can get your hands on mince pies, Yorkshire puddings, pasta dishes and sausage rolls. Shopping gluten-free in the UK is fairly easy, particularly with Coeliac UK’s Food & Drink Directory as a helpful guide.

Holland & Barrett is a health food and pharmacy chain with many stores around Scotland and the UK. They sell a variety of gluten-free products, including a wide selection of dried fruit and nuts, cereals, crackers, noodles, canned goods and various other snacks.

Thorntons is a fantastic chocolate chain that sells boxes of gluten-free truffl es and ice cream. All of their gluten-free products are clearly labeled as so.

Wherever you end up visiting in Scotland, you’ll be sure to fi nd plenty of options!

Agave EggnogIngredients

4 cups whole milk1 teaspoon vanilla extract2 cinnamon sticks4 whole cloves10 large egg yolks3/4 cup Domino® or C&H®

Organic Blue Agave Syrup1/4 teaspoon salt1 cup half-and-half2 teaspoons vanilla extract1/2 teaspoon ground nutmegAgave Whipped Cream

InstructionsIn a medium saucepan combine first 4 ingredients. Cook mixture over lowheat 30 to 40 minutes until it reaches alow boil, stirring occasionally. Removefrom heat; strain to remove cinnamonsticks and cloves.

In a large stainless steel bowl, whiskegg yolks, agave nectar and salt untilfrothy. Slowly pour hot milk mixtureinto bowl, whisking constantly.

Pour mixture into saucepan, return tostove and cook over low heat, whiskingconstantly until it reaches 160˚F. Continue cooking 1-2 minutes until itthickens slightly. Stir in half-and-halfand additional vanilla extract.

Remove from heat. Cool in saucepan for one hour. Transfer into a pitcher or airtight container. Place uncoveredin refrigerator 1 hour. Cover and chillovernight. Before serving, garnish each glass with a pinch of nutmeg andAgave Whipped Cream, if desired. Yields 12 – ½ cup servings.
