Kiran Bedi accused of inflating travel expenses

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) Team Anna found itself in another contro-versy Thursday with its key mem-ber Kiran Bedi defending herself against allegations that she inflated travel bills when invited by NGOs and other institutions for seminars or meetings. Social activist Swami Agnivesh attacked Bedi over the al-legatons while her associate Arvind Kejriwal also sought to put the onus of ending controversy on the former police officer.

The controversy surrounding Bedi added to the troubles of Team Anna, which has been dogged by divergence of views among some of its members in the past few days.

Defending her actions, Bedi stat-ed that organisations that invited her “voluntarily” paid her for busi-ness class tickets but she travelled economy and the money saved went to her NGO India Vision Founda-tion.

Her response came after a news report that she charges inflated trav-el expenses from NGOs and other institutions that invite her for semi-nars or meetings.

The Maharashtra government was in the process of increasing Hazare’s security since the last two months, but the latter had

been refusing it. Hazare will now have 11 secu-

rity personnel, as against the ear-lier four. Three metal detectors -- at the entrances of his home, the Padmavati temple and his office -- have also been installed. All visi-tors will now have to pass through these detectors and will be frisked with hand-held scanners, before being allowed to meet Hazare.

Mumbai, Oct 20 (IANS) A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s assurance, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Thursday constituted an expert panel to dispel fears on the 2,000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) in Tamil Nadu, an official said here. The 15-member expert group will interact with the officials of the state government and representa-tives of the people and activists of Tirunelveli district who have been opposing the KNPP on various safety-related issues.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 20 (IANS) Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Pantaik Thursday sought Rs.1,000 crore from the central government for repair and restoration work in the regions affected by floods last month. Two rounds of floods triggered by heavy rains had hit 21 of state’s 30 districts last month, killing at least 83 people and dis-placing thousands. The financial impact of the disaster has been estimated at Rs.3,265 crore.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) For-mer Bharatiya Janata Party presi-dent Bangaru Laxman Thursday withdrew his plea from the Delhi High Court seeking quashing of a criminal case against him for allegedly accepting money from fictitious arms dealers in 2001.The Central Bureau of Investiga-tion (CBI) said that Laxman, who is facing trial in a Delhi court, fudged the BJP accounts to ac-commodate Rs.1 lakh received from a fictitious firm, a charge refuted by the politician.

Kolkata, Oct 20 (IANS) Taking a dig at West Bengal Chief Minister Mama-ta Banerjee, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Thursday wondered why she was silent on the corruption in the central government.

Speaking at a rally here on the 10th day of his anti-corruption Jan Chetana Yatra, Advani said for every person as-sociated with politics the hottest top-ics for discussion were the corruption, scams and scandals in the central gov-ernment.

“I know Mamataji for years. She is very outspoken. Whenever we did

anything wrong, she said that un-equivocally. But I see nowadays she does not say anything on the central government’s corruption,” Advani said.

Bangalore, Oct 20 (IANS) Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa Thursday answered 379 questions from a special court judge here in a disproportionate assets case and will face an equal number Friday, her law-yer said.

“She gave precise and proper an-swers to all the 379 questions,” Jay-alalithaa’s counsel B. Kumar told re-porters after the chief minister’s first appearance in the court here in the over-a-decade-old case against her.

He said Jayalalithaa will Friday answer another 379 questions to be

posed by a special court judge who held a special sitting in the city central prison complex in view of her security needs.

Jayalalithaa flew back to Chennai, about 350 km away, after Thursday’s deposition in the case, in which she is charged with amassing Rs.66 crores between 1991 and 1996 when also she was chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

The case was filed in Chennai but transferred to Bangalore by the Su-preme Court in 2003 to ensure fair and free trial.

Bhopal, Oct 20 (IANS) He may be the oldest man alive in India. If Parasram Gurjar’s family tree is to be believed, he is a good 125 years old. He is a resident of Talkesri village in Hoshangabad district, 70 km from here. His family has no scientific proof of his age, but his 45-year-old grandson Hakam Singh Gurjar claimed that their ‘vanshawali’ or family tree men-tioned Parasram’s age as 22 years in 1908. According to that, he was born in 1886.

On World Elders’ Day Oct 1 the Madhya Pradesh government conferred on the old man the Shatayu Samman. He was among eight people felicitated for at-taining the age of more than 100 years.

Parasram is an agriculturist by profession. He is perfectly healthy though he is a little hard of hear-ing. Except for being affected by pneumonia recently, it seems he has never fallen ill. He is physi-cally capable and does most of his daily chores by himself.

“We have written to union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for making arrangements for verification of age of older people. Besides, we have applied to the Guinness World Records,” Hakam said.

Need formal invite for dialogue: Geelani

Srinagar, Oct 20 (IANS) Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani Thursday said his party would delib-erate on the central government’s re-ported offer for a dialogue only after a formal invitation was received by him.

Geelani, who addressed a media conference at his uptown Hyderpora residence, was reacting to media re-

ports which said the central govern-ment was likely to make an offer for an unconditional dialogue to Kashmiri separatist leaders.

“Once such an offer is made to us, our ‘Majlis-e-Shoura’ (assembly of elders) would meet where a decision would be taken,” Geelani said.

Chief ministers should ensure high vigil till Jan 2012: Home Min New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) Con-cerned over recent incidents of com-munal violence, union Home Minister P. Chidambaram Thursday asked chief ministers to maintain high vigil till January 2012 to check such outbreaks.

“The period from now until the end of January 2012 is marked by a number of religious occasions as well as commemorative dates and pub-lic holidays. It is important that state governments maintain a high degree of vigil so that there are no communal incidents,” Chidambaram said in his letter to chief ministers.

“In recent weeks, there has been a rise in the number of incidents of communal discord and strife in sever-al states of the country. This is a matter of concern,” he said.

The home minister has asked chief

ministers to identify areas in towns and wards which are communally sen-sitive and to maintain constant vigil in those areas.

Pay part dues, apex court tells Delhi's power firms

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) The Su-preme Court on Thursday asked Delhi's private power distribution companies BSES Rajdhani and BSES Yamuna to pay Rs.25 crore and Rs.20 crore to the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) by Nov 30 as an ad-hoc payment to partly clear their arrears for the electricity supplied to them.

An apex court bench of Justice D.K. Jain, Justice Anil R. Dave and Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya said that the payment would be besides the current charges they would be paying for the bills raised by the

DVC. The court declined the plea of

senior counsel Shyam Divan, ap-pearing for BSES Yamuna, that the current charges should be based on the power drawn by them and not on the bill raised by the DVC.

The court's directions came on a hearing on a public suit on the power crisis in Delhi. The two com-panies contended that they were running up huge losses.

"You are not indispensable," Jus-tice Jain told senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi, who appeared for the BSES Rajdhani.

Dengue cases cross 500 mark in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) Even as the capi-tal grapples with a surge of vector borne diseases -- dengue, malaria and chikungunya, the civic agency on Thursday said it will upscale anti-den-gue and malaria drive during the festive season.

"Four deaths have been reported due to dengue, and we are do-ing everything to con-tinue the fogging drive across the city," Munici-pal Corporation of Del-hi's chief medical officer V.K. Monga said.

Delhi has witnessed 503 dengue, 220 malaria, 20 chi-kungunya and five Japanese En-cephalitis cases.

The civic agency is relying on

government hospitals for complete information and statistics as the method of dengue testing varies and some death cases are not re-ported by private hospitals.

Bhattarai recalls his wedding in Delhi !New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) On his first official visit to India as Prime Minister of Nepal, Baburam Bhatta-rai on Thursday became emotive as he recalled his marriage 30 years ago with long-time comrade Hisila Yami.

Foreign diplomats get lesson on unique identification drive

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) In-dia's mammoth exercise to issue a unique identification (UID) num-ber to each of its 1.2 billion popu-lation has attracted the attention of many nations, and diplomats got a glimpse of what changes in governance could be brought about from the project's pioneer Nandan Nilekani himself.

Nilekani told the 100 odd dip-lomats from several embassies

based in the capital on Wednes-day that the UID Authority of India's effort was to provide an instrument to the people to prove their identity, on the basis of which they could avail basic ser-vices, be it subsidised foodgrains or old age pension.

The UID would also be inde-pendent of passport or driving licence numbers, though these services could use it as a proof of

identity of the applicant."At the moment, the UID is

meant for residents of India. But if the government takes a policy decision, it can be extended to non-resident Indians too," Nile-kani said to another question.

We won't tolerate Pakistani safe havens: Hillary Clinton

Washington, Oct 21 (IANS): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived at Islamabad Thursday even-ing on a two-day visit amid escalat-ing tensions between Washington and Islamabad, Xinhua reported.

Making clear the United States was not buying Pakistan's explana-tion of hedging against India, Sec-retary of State Hillary Clinton has bluntly told its key ally it would not tolerate terrorists in Pakistan's safe haven.

"In recent months, we've seen the Haqqani Network turn from being

a fighting force to one that is delib-erately targeting American targets," like the US embassy in Kabul, she told CNN in an interview in Kabul on Thursday.

"We cannot tolerate that," Clinton said. "And the safe haven in Pakistan from which they launch these at-tacks has nothing to do with the Tal-iban coming back into Afghanistan."

"It has nothing to do with Pakistan hedging against India or whatever the explanation is," she said accord-ing to a transcript of the interview released by the State Department.

India presses France to resolve turban ban issue

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS): India on Thurs-day pressed France to find a "mutually acceptable resolution" of the ban on Sikhs wearing turbans in public places. Paris indi-cated its willingness to

discuss the sensitive issue."The turban is a symbol

of dignity. It's a sensitive issue for every Indian. We had discussions with the French to find a mutu-ally acceptable solution," External Affairs Minis-

ter S.M. Krishna said at a joint press conference with his French counter-part Alain Juppe.

"I have also written a letter to Italy's foreign minister on problems faced by the Sikhs at air-ports. We are pursuing the matter with the EU as well," Krishna replied when asked about the French ban on wearing turbans in that country.

The French government has imposed a blanket ban on wearing of turbans and any other religious headgear by students to

schools. The Sikh commu-nity in France and India has vigorously protested against the move and has appealed to the French government to revoke the ban.

Juppe said that there was no discrimination against the Sikh com-munity in his country, but stressed that the ban was in accordance with France's policy of secular state.

He added that the Sikhs were treated exactly like the Christians, the Jews and other communities.

Tripoli, Oct 20 (IANS): Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled Libya with an iron fist for over 40 years, was killed on Thursday after being on the run for some two months when he re-peatedly vowed to keep fighting until death.

The eccentric 69-year-old, who preached a strange cocktail of ideol-ogy based on Islam and socialism, died in his hometown Sirte, appar-ently after being wounded in the legs.

A fighter from the National Tran-sitional Council (NTC) told BBC that Gaddafi cried for mercy as the forces advanced menacingly. “Don’t shoot,” he pleaded while hiding in a hole.

There were other versions of his fi-nal moments too.

Tens of thousands of Libyans took to the streets across the country to celebrate as news of the former dicta-tor’s death spread.

Gaddafi’s death marked the end of a prolonged revolt that began in Benghazi in February, inspired in part by the popular uprisings in Tu-nisia and Egypt.

Gaddafi used strong arm meth-ods to put down the rebellion, and it looked initially that he may succeed. But the US and other Western coun-tries came out strongly in favor of NTC, sealing Gaddafi’s fate.

From Aug 23, as the rebels seized Tripoli, Gaddafi was on the run. He kept issuing statements from hide-outs.

There were conflicting versions of how he died. One account said he bled to death while being taken away to Misrata town. Other reports said he was shot in the head. Yet another version said he was slain while fleeing.

Al-Jazeera also reported that Gaddafi’s fourth son Mutassim was captured in Sirte, several hours after his father was killed.

The fall of Sirte and Gaddafi marked the end of another major chapter in the Arab world which has seen unprecedented upheavals in recent times that have led to regime change in Egypt and Tunisia. Yemen, Algeria, Syria and Bahrain have also seen mass protests against their rul-ers.

Gaddafi was one of the world’s

longest rulers, having seized power in a bloodless coup in September 1969 against King Idris. He was 27 years old then.

Gaddafi later turned Libya into a hub for revolutionaries, angering the US, which was also piqued with his pro-Soviet leaning.

Along with Syria, South Yemen, Algeria and PLO, Libya became a member of the “Arab Steadfastness Front” in the 70s and 80s that advo-cated Israel’s destruction.

US President Barack Obama hailed the event as a ‘momentous day’ in the history of Libya.”Today we can de-

finitively say that the Gaddafi regime has come to an end,” he said in a tel-evised statement from the Rose Gar-den of the White House. The “dark shadow of tyranny has been lifted.”

Meanwhile, UN Secretary Gen-eral Ban Ki-moon called on all sides in Libya to lay down their arms and work together peacefully to rebuild the North African nation.

“Clearly, this day marks an historic transition for Libya,” Ban said at UN Headquarters in New York, reacting to the reports of the death of the Lib-yan leader and the end of fighting in Sirte and other cities.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS): India has been scaling up its relations with Libya over the years, largely driven by energy interests, but its long-standing ruler Muammar Gaddafi, who is now dead, was no great friend of New Delhi.

In fact, under his regime India and Libya have been at best distant neighbors. Gaddafi was perceived here to be a friend of Pakistan who benefited from the A.Q Khan illicit nuclear smuggling network and one who raked up the Kashmir is-sue in the UN General Assembly two years ago.

Much to the outrage of New Delhi, Gaddafi supported the idea of an "independent state" for Kash-mir and said that it should be a "Baathist state" between India and

Pakistan.He antagonized India again

when, on the eve of the UN Securi-ty Council debate and vote against Libya in February, he compared his crackdown against the Libyan opposition to India's actions in Kashmir.

When the Western powers mounted pressure on him, he wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and also sought Indian investments in Libya's oil and gas industry at the height of the civil war.

With Qaddafi's death, India, which has been cautiously watch-ing developments in Libya, will have to craft a new policy of en-gagement with the new dispensa-tion that emerges in Tripoli.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS): Inflation in India is being driven by supply side constraints but will come down to lower than 8 percent by this fiscal end, Deputy Chairman of the Plan-ning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia said Thursday. “By the end of the year, you will have infla-tion at lower than 8 percent. New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS): India ranks 132 out of 183 countries in terms of the domestic regulatory environment for doing business, according to a World Bank and International Finance Corpora-tion (IFC) report released Thurs-day. “India’s rank in this year’s report has improved by seven due to the improvement in regulatory framework, which now allows for e-filling of value added tax and col-lateral registry,” Dahlia Khalifa, senior advisor, World Bank Group, told IANS.

According to Khalifa, reforms in registration of credit, tax and trade information have helped India im-prove its domestic business envi-ronment. In another section of the report which looks at reforms in

the last six years, India fared much better and was ranked 22. “In the last six years, India has made 20 business regulation reforms in sev-en key areas and has now become a leader in areas such as getting credit, collateral registry and pro-tection of investors,” he added.

In areas such as getting cred-it, India stood at the 40th rank, while in investor protection, it was ranked 46. Meanwhile, India fared poorly in areas such as starting a business (166th rank), getting an electricity connection (98), con-struction permits (181), paying taxes (147) and contract enforce-ment (182). This is the ninth annual report by the World Bank which studies the domestic regulatory en-vironment for enterprises.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS): The new policies for the telecom, informa-tion technology (IT) and electronics sectors would usher in a new phase of growth and add millions of jobs, Communications Minister Kapil Sibal said Thursday. “The three poli-cies together aim to ensure that infor-mation communication technology equipment (ICTE) permeates to all aspects of society, business, govern-ance, finance and other aspects of modern life,” Sibal said while ad-dressing the Economic Editors Con-ference here. The National Telecom Policy (NTP), 2011, aims to introduce nation-wide mobile number portabil-ity and roaming, one license across services and service areas and access to broadband. “We will try to get the cabinet permission this year and start implementing the (telecom) policy from as early as next year,” he said.

The policy on IT targets revenue of $300 million from the industry, creating 10 million additional skilled

manpower, providing mandatory and affordable e-government to the common man and forming a regula-tory framework for a secured cyber space by 2020. The national policy on electronics manufacturing targets to achieve, by 2020, a turnover of $400 billion, employment to 28 million people, turnover of $55 billion in chip design and embedded software in-dustry and setting up of 200 electron-ics manufacturing hubs per annum.

Goa drops LGBT tourism talks

Panaji, Oct 20 (IANS): The Goa government Thursday did a volte face on promoting lesbian gay bisexual transsexual (LGBT) tourism by choosing to drop a discussion on it at the state-sponsored tourism and travel mart which begins Friday. The decision was taken after right wing groups and the Goa church criticized the government’s deci-sion to endorse LGBT tourism at the three-day Goa International Travel Mart (GITM). Speak-ing to reporters, Goa Tourism Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar said that LGBT tourism may not augur well with a section of the populace in Goa. “We will not have the knowledge session on the issue as it does not augur well with many people,” he said. “The officials wanted to create aware-ness among buyers about this segment, which has been grow-ing,” said Halarnkar.

“Even if the government gives permission, people here will not accept it,” BST (Baba Ramdev led Bharat Swabhiman Trust) spokesperson Kamlesh Bandekar said. “In the last few years, the Goa government has already allowed drug traffick-ing, casinos and prostitution to fester, now this! We are going to lobby with people against the promotion of LGBT tourism here,” he added.

Changing International Political Scenario: From a Unipolar to a Multipolar World

What is the current International Sce-nario? Are we a unipolar world? Or are we a multi-polar world ?Is there a shift or change in global poli-tics?

All these questions are very promi-nent amongst international political thinkers these days. The change in the global world order is slowly and grad-ually coming in the light of the global community. After the end of the Sec-ond World War the global commu-nity witnessed a bipolar world. It was ideologically divided into two power blocs of capitalist USA and commu-nist USSR (erstwhile) as the super-powers and their allies.

A situation of cold war had en-gulfed the international political world. However, after the disintegra-tion of erstwhile USSR in 1991 the entire global scenario shifted focus from a bipolar world to a unipolar world with USA as the hegemonic power. A unipolar world is an inter-national scenario where there is only one superpower and in this case it was USA.

However, the global community is again witnessing slow and gradual but prominent signs of change in the international political system. The world is slowly and gradually changing from a unipolar world to a multipolar world, where there are nu-merous centers of power. Even though it is a subtle process and USA still holds a superior status yet the process of change has already taken the first step. It is only a matter of time and international circumstances, which will finally change the world from a unipolar one to a multipolar one.

Alternate centers of power have been developed in the world and they are slowly and gradually acquiring more and more power. EU i.e. Euro-pean Union; ASEAN- Association of South East Asian countries; SAARC- South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation; BRICS- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are the organizations, which are slowly and gradually gaining more and more influence in the international scenario.

India, China, Russia, Japan and Germany are considered some of the growing influential countries in the world order today.

Even US President Barack Obama said that, “the country he inherits will no longer be able to call the shots alone, as its power over an increasing-

ly Multi-polar world begins to wane” (2025: The End of US dominance 2008).

The changing economic conditions and trade rela-tions are one of the few reasons for shift in the in-ternational scenario. China is one of the leading traders of the world while Japan is a growing technological country. India on the other hand has been considered as a strong ally in south Asian countries as well as its role as a sort of spokesperson for the third world nations.

India was also one of the leading founders of NAM (Non Align Movement) and is still a democratic country since its inde-pendence. Brazil on the other hand is a well developed agricultural and mining country with a good service

sector; While the European Union is very strong regional organization, which in way has control over the en-tire Europe.

The economic condition of the

world is one of the most prominent reasons for the shift. The recent recessions and downfall in the Ameri-can economy further added salt to the wound.

Countries like China and Russia agreed to expand their currencies in the bi-lateral trades so as to re-duce the dependence on US dollar. A multipolar world would thus in a way benefit the international economic order as it would work to-wards providing financial stability to the world by re-ducing the effect of down-fall of the US dollar. Even

the World Bank agrees that countries like India and China provide a basis for global growth.

Common international problems like environment issues, economic

downfalls, terrorism also add to the fact of reducing gaps between the in-ternational issues thus giving them a common ground. Global govern-ance and multilateralism would also strengthen the concept of a multipo-lar world and conferences like G20 are a step towards it.

Hence it can be concluded that even though the world today is not completely multipolar, it also not completely unipolar either. USA is slowly and gradually losing its title of the hegemonic power and alternate centers of powers are being devel-oped in the world. The world is slowly shifting its focus towards an Inter-national scenario where there are a number of ruling powers rather than one or two. India, China and Rus-sia are among the leading powers to bring about this concept of change in the international order and challenge the supremacy of a few countries.

Sex Education: Why it should no longer be a taboo in India! With India’s rapidly growing population, teenage pregnancies, rising number of sexu-

ally transmitted disease (STD) cases, there are many who would say that education

and awareness are the only solutions to these problems. Due to the lack of informa-

tion made available, there are questions which remain unanswered in the minds of

the youth and even some adults. It is time that Sex education is given more impor-

tance in India. Efforts should be made to introduce sex education and if necessary

be made compulsory for every school in a manner that is tactful and where sensitive

topics are appropriately addressed.

Create Awareness…Sex education for the youth does not mean challenging or hurting anyone’s culture and religious beliefs, but rather it is about increasing fact based awareness which will cater to the lifestyle of each generation. Rural India in particular, although not limited to it, requires the benefit of this education. Adolescents between the age group of 14 to 21 in particular should be well aware of all the effective methods of prevention of STD’s as they are more likely to be experimental.

Whispers’ in the dark…So the question we must ask ourselves is why is the word “sex” a taboo? Why did our public school Biology teacher choose to skip those last few pages when this was the first time the entire class was paying attention? The answer to this for most people is that if we do not speak of it, then the problem will evaporate into thin air * POOF*. Ignorance is what causes some government officials to think homosexuality is a disease and that women that go to pubs are “easy” or women wearing shorts and skirts are “asking for it”. Sex Education will mean a change of attitude towards sex in general, whether it is the opposite one or otherwise!

While this classical form of dance is prominent among women all over

the world, more and more men are turning to it, even in India.

Sanjay Khatri, who started learning ballet at the age of 19, says that his involvement in this form of dancing was an uncalcu-lated move.

”When I first came to Delhi, I wanted to become a model but ended up taking ballet classes. Though initially it seemed all too boring, I slowly started getting fascinated by the jumps and the turns involved in it and fell in love with it”.

He adds, “When I started I was the only guy in the class of twenty girls, though few guys joined in between but left a little too early, which might just have been be-cause of the inhibition to train be-tween so many girls. However, the scenario has changed drastically in the last 7-8 years and now you

see almost the same ratio of guys in the training schools compared to girls”.

So, what has brought about India’s change in attitude towards this art? Fernando Aguilera who hails from Argentina has over the years observed the phenomenon very closely, having started his training school in Delhi in 1999.

According to Aguilera, “Guys used to shy earlier assuming that ballet is an art made for girls. However, there is no dearth of op-portunities now in Indian market, including movies and reality shows, and that has opened the door for many aspiring perform-ers. It’s much easier and acceptable for guys to learn ballet now”.

Gilles Chuyen is a professional ballet performer, who hails from France but now stays in India. He is over whelmed with the interest shown by young Indian men to step up to learn ballet dancing.

Mohali, Oct 20 (IANS): India took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match ODI series on Thursday, beat-ing England by five wickets in the third One-day International.

Chasing England's 298 for four, India made 300/5 in style, with Cap-tain Mahendra Singh Dhoni sealing the match with a four at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium.

Openers Ajinkya Rahane (91) and Parthiv Patel (38) gave India a great start with their 79-run stand. Ra-hane was in fine touch and strength-ened the good start, adding 111 runs for the second wicket with Gautam Gambhir (58).

Man of the Match Rahane, who hit six fours in his 104-ball knock, missed out on his maiden ODI cen-tury after he failed to pick-up a slower from Steve Finn.

Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli (35) left in quick succession, leaving India at 235 for five. Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja (26) took India home safely with their unbroken 65-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Mohali, Oct 20 (IANS): A re-lieved India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni credited the top order batsmen for clinching the thrilling five-wicket victory over England in the third ODI and sealing the series.

The Indian skipper finished the match in style, hitting two consecutive fours in the first two balls of the last over bowled by

Tim Bresnan. Dhoni said the team was

confident of chasing any total."I think it was a very good

performance. We are backing ourselves to chase whatever the opposition scores, and we have been doing that. The up-per middle order did the job for us," Dhoni said.

England skipper Alastair Cook admitted that it was tough for the team to narrowly miss a win. "It's a tough defeat to take, es-

pecially when it's so close. Six an over is always a tough chase, but credit to the way MS and Jadeja finished that off," Cook said.

He also felt their fielding was not upto their standards.

"Our fielding has been slightly below par, which is unusual for us, and today it cost us 20 to 25 runs in the field."

Sri Lanka amateur golf: Chikka, Gagan win men's team title

Kandy, Oct 20 (IANS): The Indian men's team of S. Chikkrangrappa and Gagan Verma won the inter-national team event at the Sri Lan-kan Amateur Open Golf Champi-onships, edging out Bangladesh by one stroke on Thursday.

Chikka, made up for his first round 79 with an one-under 72 on the apr-73 course, while Gagan

Verma, who had a 72 on first day shot 74 on the second day.

In the individual competition for men, Gagan is lying second and Chikka is sixth.

Indian girls Gurbani Singh and Gauri Monga finished second in the Ladies behind Malaysian duo of H Fariza Ismail, 14 years, and Loy Hee Ying, 17 years, topped

Star boxer Akhil Kumar joins Mumbai Fighters

Mumbai, Oct 20 (IANS): Mum-bai Fighters, the only Indian team for the upcoming World Se-ries of Boxing (WSB) has roped in star pugilist Akhil Kumar in their squad.

With several international and national medals and awards in boxing, Akhil's "open guarded" style will be an asset to the team. A 2005 Arjuna awardee, Akhil's biggest achievement was his ban-tamweight (54 kg) gold at 2006 Commonwealth Games.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) India's Saina Nehwal crashed out of the women's singles second round of the Denmark Open badminton with a 19-21, 13-21 loss to Tzu Ying Tai of Chinese Taipei at Odense on Thurs-day.

It took 36 minutes for Tzu to close the match.

However, the Indian pair of Jwala Gutta and V. Diju entered the mixed

doubles quarterfinals with a 21-16, 21-19 victory over the English com-bine of Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier.

After Ponting-Clarke century stand, Johnson-Cummins bowl Australia to victory

Johannesburg, Oct 20 (IANS) New fast bowling sensation Pat Cummins spearheaded Australia's big win over South Africa in their first one-day cricket international, taking three important wickets in a rain-affected start to the series at Centurion.

Cummins, 18, celebrated his inclu-sion in the Test squad earlier in the week with a burst of speed to rattle the South Africans. He dismissed Jacques Kallis, JP Duminy and Johan Botha at key stages of the game. At this rate, he will become Australia's second youngest ever Test cricketer by making his debut.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS): Congratulating legendary Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan on receiving an honorary Australian doctorate, the country’s High Commissioner to India Peter Varghese said Thursday the Bollywood star has made an “inestimable contribution to global cinema”. Bachchan was Thursday awarded an honorary Australian doctorate by the Queensland University of Technol-ogy (QUT) for his outstanding contribution to creative industries over several decades. “I congratulate Bachchan on his honorary doctorate from QUT, an important academic institution in my home city of Brisbane,” Var-ghese said. “I want to thank Bachchan for his enormous contribution to global cinema. In accepting this award he will encourage the im-portant cultural conversation between India and Australia,” Varghese added. Bachchan is the second person to receive the honor. Mumbai , Oct 20 (IANS): Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor says the title of his upcoming film “Rockstar” may suggest that it is a story of a grungy young boy, but this isn’t so. “The title ‘Rockstar’ can sometimes go against us because when people hear Rockstar, they feel the film will have this guy who will wear a leather jacket, will break the guitar, will create a mess on the stage. Actually the film is about a character, a Jat boy, and whatever happens in his life, he tells the world about it through his songs,” Ranbir told reporters. The actor has strummed the guitar, indulged in head banging, and rocked the stage for the movie, set for release Nov 11. In the movie, Ranbir plays the role of Janardhan or Jordan, an aspiring singer, who goes on to be a popular rockstar.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS): The hunt for actor Prateik Babbar’s love interest in his new film “Issaq” is over but the producers have decided to keep the identity of the girl under wraps. They believe that the chemistry between the girl and Prateik is the USP of the film and it should not fizzle out soon as the film is still under production. “Since the film is an adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, the chemistry between the two is very important. After a lot of search we have found the right girl,” said director Manish Tiwary. “We were looking for somebody who is very young and innocent and at the same time can carry off the rustic look of a Banarasi girl. As of now all I can say is I am very happy with Bachchi (her character’s name in the film) and she certainly looks very good with Prateik who has a lean look in the film,” Tiwary added. The film, produced by Shailesh Singh and Dhaval Gada, is being shot in Banaras in Uttar Pradesh and is slated to release early next year.

Fernandez’s singing voice has become widely recognizable in this nation of 1.2 billion people after this summer’s premiere of “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”. The 78-year-old has reportedly recorded up to 11,000 solos, duets and chorus-backed songs in over 20 Indian languages since 1947. Asha, who has evergreen numbers like “Dum maro dum”, “Mehbooba mehbooba” (“Sholay”), “Piya tu ab to aaja” (“Caravan”) and “Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko” (“Yaadon ki Baraat”) to her credit, was conferred with the Guinness honour at the Asian awards function held in London, a statement said. The singer is elated with the record. “Aaj sahi mayne mein mujhe aisa lag raha hai ki mein world ki recognised singer hogayi hu. Mujhe ye pata tha key sabse zyada mere recorded songs hai phir bhi main aaj tak chup rahi (Today, I truly
