Czech paraglider rescued from Himachal hills

Bhopal shuts down for gas tragedy affected

Shimla, Oct 11 (IANS): A 27-year-old Czech woman paraglider, who was reported missing in the hills of Himachal Pradesh's picturesque Lahaul valley, was rescued Tuesday evening, police said. She was stranded on an isolated hill above Yacha village Monday afternoon. It took five hours to rescue the foreigner as the spot where she was stranded was 4,000 metres above the village.

Bhopal, Oct 11 (IANS) :The Bhopal bandh called Tuesday by five organizations for the first time in their fight for justice since 27 years of the gas tragedy got good response as most of the shops remained closed and vehicles did not ply on the roads, said agitators. The survivors are demanding that the state and central government present the correct figure before the Supreme Court which has to hear a cura-tive petition on the compensa-tion to gas victims. The bandh is supported by the Congress party and several trade union organizations.

PM assures Anna, Digvijay attacks him

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS): Ahead of the Hisar parliamentary bypoll Oct 13, Prime Minister Manmo-han Singh Tuesday assured Anna Hazare on the proposed anti-graft Lokpal bill even as the Congress attacked the activist over his "links" with the Rashtriya Sway-amsewak Sangh.

"As you know, we are commit-ted to a strong Lokpal bill. And we hope that we will be successful in our endeavour in the near future," Manmohan Singh said in his let-ter to Hazare that was written on Monday but released Tuesday.

In his letter, written in Hindi, the prime minister said that his government was working on an "exhaustive agenda to fight cor-ruption and improve governance".

"Our government is also con-sidering several proposals regard-ing electoral reforms. Among the suggestions that are being considered is the right to reject which you have also mentioned," he added.

Taking on Anna Hazare ahead of the Hisar parliamentary by-poll, however, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh Tuesday

asked the activist to ponder over his association with "Congress opponents" and see who was ben-efitting from this. Team Anna hit back, saying their movement should not be held responsible if it benefits the opposition.

In an open letter to Hazare, the Congress leader said: "You are surrounded by people opposed to the Congress ideology."

"Be it Shanti Bhushan, his son Prashant or your associate Arvind Kejriwal... they have all been Congress opponents... are busy pursuing their political ends and are exploiting your clean image," Digvijay Singh said in his letter released to the media Tuesday.

Kejriwal reacted by saying "our movement should not be held re-sponsible if in any way it benefits the opposition".

"We are fighting for systemic changes. We are not campaigning for anyone or asking voters to vote for a particular candidate. We are not responsible if opposition is benefited. It is the Congress which is responsible for this," Kejriwal told reporters in Hisar that goes to poll Thursday.

Delhi in mind, Advani starts yatra from Bihar

Patna, Oct 11 (IANS) Calling for a "brighter India" free of corruption, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Tuesday rolled out his sixth road campaign, the Jan Chetna Yatra, that will take him through 100 districts in 38 days - and hopefully for him closer towards power in the next general election. Hoping to tap the discontent over corruption and the Manmohan Singh-led United Pro-gressive Alliance (UPA) government, the 83-year-old Advani after much debate and controversy started his

Jan Chetna Yatra or public awareness rally, from Sitab Diara, the birthplace of socialist leader Jayaprakash Naray-an. Omar meets Chidambaram on revoking AFSPA

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS): Ahead of the report of the central inter-locutors on Jammu and Kashmir, state Chief Minister Omar Abdul-lah Tuesday met Home Minister P. Chidambaram here and discussed issues related to revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA) from some parts of the state.

Sources said that repeal of Dis-turbed Areas Act (DDA) from parts of the state was also discussed at the meeting. They said that if an area is removed from the list under the DAA, the AFPSA is not appli-cable to it. Three interlocutors on Jammu and Kashmir - noted jour-nalist Dileep Padgaonkar, acad-emician Radha Kumar and former information commissioner M.M.

Ansari are expected to submit their report Wednesday when their term of appointment expires.

The team of interlocutors was ap-pointed Oct 13 last year, when the Kashmir situation had turned grim following street protests and the killing of more than 100 youth in vi-olence and firing by security forces.

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS) Call-ing for a two-track approach to deal with left-wing extremism, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said Tuesday that there was need to recognise tribals as victims of state apathy and Maoist agenda while dealing firmly with the ultras’ leadership.Delivering the Sardar Patel Me-morial lecture here, Ramesh said called for expanded role of elect-ed local representatives in the development activities in Maoist affected areas.“What is clear is that we need a two-track approach--one that deals with the leadership of the Naxals (Maoist), who wish to overthrow the Indian state and the other, which focuses on the concerns of the people they pre-tend/claim to serve. There is clearly a need to recognise tribal populations as victims--first of state apathy and discrimination and then of the Naxal agenda,” Ramesh said.

Idol immersion may have contaminated Delhi water

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS) There is a strong possibility that Delhi's potable water has got contaminated with toxic dyes after the immer-sion of idols on Durga Puja last week and ear-lier during the Ganesh festival.

"Many idols are im-mersed upstream in the Wazirabad area, from where Delhi gets its drinking water sup-ply, and water treatment plants are not efficient enough to treat dyes and other chemicals," Ravi Aggarwal of NGO Tox-ics Link told IANS.

According to envi-ronmentalists, the im-mersion guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in June 2010 are openly flouted by puja committees. To make matters worse, there is no-body to check it.

According to the CPCB, after im-mersions, they collect water sam-

ples to study the impact. "We will be collecting samples from the Yamu-na and the results will be declared," CPCB chairman S.P. Gautam said.

Aggarwal believes that all these chemicals having arsenic, cadmi-um and lead, get mixed in potable water and can be harmful even in

dilution. Besides, these chemicals reduce the dissolved oxygen level in the river, affecting aquatic life.

"I have been visiting banks of the Yamuna during the last one week to gauge the situation and it is totally filthy and littered with leftovers of festivities," Aggarwal said.

Plea in court over right to education rules for Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS) An NGO has moved to Delhi High Court seeking direction to the Delhi government to frame rules to provide free and compulsory edu-cation to children in the national capital under the right to education (RTE) act.

Petitioner NGO Social Jurist filed the public interest litigation on Mon-day, stating that the Delhi government did not seem to be serious about making and notifying rules as required under Section 38 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Educa-tion Act, 2009. This had resulted

in continuous violation of the right to education of lakhs of children in the capital.

Pleading that the government should be directed to issue the no-

tification within a decided time period, petitioner's counsel Ashok Agarwal said: "The government has failed to frame rules under the RTE Act, which came into force in 2009, and as a result

children are deprived of the ben-efits under the act."

The petitioner said that the gov-ernment had framed the draft rules as early as June 24, 2010, but till now these have not been notified.

Delhi's Jamia Nagar. According to police, the accused

India rebuffs Pakistan’s “unwarranted” attempt to raise

Kashmir at UNUnited Nations, Oct 11 (IANS): India has rebuffed as “unwarranted and ir-relevant” a Pakistani attempt to raise the Kashmir issue during a debate in the Special Political and Decoloniza-tion Committee of the United Nations. The Pakistani reference to “the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir (that) is un-warranted and completely irrelevant to the work of this Committee,” In-dian representative R. Ravindra, first secretary at India’s UN mission, said exercising his right of reply. “I would

like to remind the distinguished repre-sentative of Pakistan that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India,” he said during the debate Monday. “The Indian constitution guarantees the fundamental rights to all its citi-zens. The people of Jammu and Kash-mir have expressed their free will by participating in free and fair elections held at regular intervals,” Ravindra said. Earlier, raising New Delhi’s hack-les, Tahir Hussain Andrabi, counsellor at Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to

the UN, sought a United Nations-led plebiscite to determine the will of the Kashmiri people saying Jammu and Kashmir has never been an “integral part” of India. “Jammu and Kashmir is neither an integral part of India, nor has it ever been so,” he said.

He also said that Pakistan was com-mitted to finding a peaceful resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which would lead to “durable peace and stability” in South Asia.

Washington, Oct 11 (IANS) More than 100 “Occupy Boston” protesters were arrested in the US city of Bos-ton early Tuesday, the movement’s organizers said. Early Tuesday morn-ing, hundreds of police “in full riot gear brutally attacked” protesters who gathered on the Rose Kennedy Green-way in downtown Boston, Massachu-setts, arresting more than 100 people, the “Occupy Boston” said in a state-ment posted on its website, reported Xinhua. Police “made no distinction between protesters, medics, or legal observers,” it added.

Protesters of the “Occupy Bos-ton,” an offshoot of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, have set up tents in Dewey Square Park in downtown Boston for weeks and tried on Mon-day to expand to a larger section of the nearby Rose Kennedy Greenway. The “Occupy Wall Street” movement appeared to be gaining steam as it en-

tered the fourth week. Starting in New York and spreading almost daily, the protests have reached more than 100 major US cities. Earlier Monday, an estimated 10,000 union members, stu-dents, veterans, and others marched

from the Boston Common to Dewey Square, and then to the North Wash-ington Bridge to demand economic reform on Wall Street and the end of special interest influence in Washing-ton, the Occupy Boston said.

Washington, Oct 12 (IANS): US President Barack Obama Tuesday called Saudi Ambassador to the US in the wake of two men accused of trying to assassinate him, the White House said.

In his call to Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir, Obama said that the US be-lieves this plot to be a “flagrant vio-lation” of US and international law,

reiterating the US commitment to meet its responsibilities to ensure the security of diplomats serving in the country, said the White House.

Obama underscored the close part-nership between the US and Saudi Arabia, said the statement.

Two men were charged by the US Justice Department earlier the day for their alleged participation in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the US with explosives.

The two men are Manssor Arb-absiar, a 56-year-old naturalised US citizen holding both Iranian and US passports, and Gholam Shakuri, an-other Iranian. Both were charged with conspiracy to murder a foreign offi-cial, and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, among others, the Justice said in a statement. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman rejected the US accusations, terming them as “incorrect” and “prefabricated scenario,” the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Over 100 Occupy Bostonprotesters arrested in US

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS) India is set to give a major impetus to its Look East policy when it hosts the leaders of Vietnam and Myanmar this week amid their straining ties with China. Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang arrived in India Tuesday on a three-day visit. This is followed by Myanmar’s President U. Thein Sein who arrives today. The two leaders are here ahead of the 18-nation East Asia Summit in Bali next month. India is becoming

an increasingly important player in ongoing efforts to evolve an inclu-sive regional architecture in Asia. Scaling up economic, energy and strategic ties with the these South-east Asian countries is high on New Delhi’s agenda as more countries in the region look to it to balance what is widely seen as China’s increased assertiveness in the region. Both countries are experiencing strains in their ties with China.

Rome, Oct 11 (IANS): The Ital-ian ship seized by a group of So-mali pirates in the Gulf of Aden was freed on Tuesday in a blitz action carried out by a NATO task force, according to an Italian foreign ministry statement. Six of the ship's 23 crew members were Indians. The operation forced the 11 armed pirates on board to surrender, liberating the 23 crew members of the "Montecristo", reported Xinhua.

Government will address exporters’ concerns: Sharma

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS): Com-merce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma Tuesday met industry lead-ers and assured them the government would address their concerns, espe-cially related to foreign trade.”Cost of credit, interest subvention, availability of dollar credit in view of the currency volatility... these are issues which have been discussed,” Sharma told report-ers after the meeting of the Board of Trade. Sharma said he has already raised the issue with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and appropriate action was expected soon. The meet-ing took place just a couple of days be-fore the announcement of the annual supplement to the trade policy.

The minister said di-versification has helped boost the growth of ex-ports in recent years.

“We added 41 new markets for incentives in Africa, Latin Ameri-ca, Oceania and Central Asia. Labour intensive industry received our special attention as we recognized the need of protecting the interests of millions of people engaged in textiles, leather and gems and jewelry with fluctuating global demand,” he said. Leading industrialists including CII

President B Muthuraman, Apollo Tyres Chairman Onkar Kunwar, ITC head Y.C. Deveshwar and TVS Motors’ Venu Srinivasan, and the heads of various export promotion bodies attended the meeting. The board stressed the need to meaningfully engage with China, which has emerged as India’s largest trading partner, with two-way trade touching $60 billion last year. However,

the balance of trade is heavily in favor of China, with the deficit rising to $20 billion.

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS): Millions of BlackBerry users across India, Middle East, Africa and Europe faced another cut-off from online services Tuesday, just a few hours after the Canadian cell phone mak-ers claimed it had fixed the problem. “BlackBerry services have been affected due to an unplanned inter-national outage at RIM. Inconven-ience is regretted,” one of the leading Indian telecom service provider

Maruti strike continues

for fifth day, production hit

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS): A strike at the country’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant continued for the fifth day Tuesday as a stand-off between striking workers and the management continued to affect output. “The situation has been the same as yesterday. There has been absolutely no production even today at Manesar. The strike continues,” a company official told IANS. Workers at the Manesar plant went on strike Friday de-manding reinstatement of 44 sus-pended co-workers, who were not taken back after an earlier 33-day impasse with the management ended Oct 1. Of the 2,000 work-ers who went on strike on Oct 7 including all categories like regu-lar, contractual, apprentices and trainees, 500 later chose not to continue.

On Sunday, Maruti Suzuki had dismissed 10 workers, terminated five trainees and suspended 10 employees for having indulged in violence at the Manesar factory premises.

“The labor problem at Maruti’s plant has severely impacted ancil-lary units and vendors which are supplying auto parts to the com-pany,” said Gurgaon Udyog Asso-ciation, president, Parveen Yadav.

Pakistan hints at transit trade rights to India Islamabad, Oct 11 (IANS): Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim Tuesday hinted at grant-ing transit trade rights to India to transport goods to Afghanistan. Fa-him told reporters in Lahore that the issue will be discussed in a meeting of the commerce secretaries of India and Pakistan in New Delhi next month, re-ported Xinhua. Pakistan has allowed Afghanistan to deliver its items at Wa-

gha, the lone formal land border point between Pakistan and India.

The commerce secretary-level talks would be discussing the issue of granting a Pakistani trade corridor to India for exports to Afghanistan and important decisions could be taken after the meeting, Fahim said. Under the new Pakistan-Afghanistan Transit Trade Agreement signed earlier this year, Afghanistan can transport its

goods to India via Pakistani land route in their own trucks. However, India is not permitted to send its goods to Afghanistan through Pakistan’s land route. Fahim visited India last month for talks with his Indian counterpart Anand Sharma and both agreed to issue multiple-entry visas valid for a year to their businessmen to boost commerce.

Darjeeling, Oct 11 (IANS): In a bid to fulfill her pre-poll promise of turning Darjeeling in north-ern West Bengal into Switzerland, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday announced a host of tour-ism and economic projects for the hilly region. “Darjeeling will be Switzerland and everybody’s dreamland. The master plan for tourism development is under-way, and once completed and im-plemented, the region will turn into Switzerland,” Banerjee said at a government programme here while announcing the ‘Destination Darjeeling’ project.

“Under the project, from install-ing street lamps and signages on

roads, to sanitary development and garbage disposal, all will be done to make the city better. Eco-tourism policy for Darjeeling is ready. The funds have been sanctioned,” she said. Banerjee also unveiled six railway projects, including a mod-ern printing press and basic train-ing centre at the neighbouring hill town Kurseong, a filter manufac-turing plant and a multi-functional complex building at Siliguri in the plains. A tourist information centre (TIC) will be set up in the pictur-esque Mall, the tourist hub of Dar-jeeling town. A number of other projects including a research centre and a Rs. 28 crore parking lot are underway as well.

Unitech moves company law board against Telenor

Mamata’s sops to ‘turn Darjeeling into

Switzerland ‘

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS): Unitech, the Indian partner of mobile services firm Telenor, Tuesday said it has filed a petition before the Company Law Board (CLB) to restrain the Norwe-gian firm from going ahead with a $1.7 billion rights issue, and accused it of mismanaging the telecom en-tity’s funds. Unitech said Telenor had refused to raise debt through other means even though the State Bank of India had agreed last November to give it long-term debt of about Rs.9,000 crore ($1.8 billion). The In-dian firm also added that the mobile firm did not require fresh funds at this moment for its operations. Telenor, however, refuted these claims.

“There was an unsuccessful at-tempt earlier to block the rights issue through a legal process that went up to the Supreme Court of India. As we

have done earlier, we will present the facts in this new legal initiative taken by Unitech Ltd.,” said a statement from Telenor. “The simple case here is that the Uninor board, having fol-lowed prescribed processes, has asked its owners to invest more in the com-pany in the absence of bank loans. We continue to urge Unitech to join us in meeting this shared responsibility to-wards the company,” the Norwegian company added.

Unitech’s managing director San-jay Chandra is among the 14 people charged by the Central Bureau of In-vestigation (CBI) in the 2G spectrum and telecom licensing scandal.

“Uninor has already emerged as the most successful new operator in India by far and Telenor Group will not al-low any of this to disrupt its continued progress,” said Telenor.

My name is Jagnoor. I am a 2011 Teach For India fellow and the

class teacher of 40 boys in Grade 2 in MCD Chattarpur. It has been about 5 months since I began this amazing experience of becoming a teacher, an experience that teaches me some-thing new and challenges me in new ways every day. My Teach For India (TFI) story however, began about 2 years ago.

That was the time when I was working for an investment bank with some brilliant people and could af-ford all the luxuries that I wanted. It was cool to say TGIF, and every con-versation would have someone say, "I hate Mondays". It was also the time when I was asking myself, what was it that I really wanted to do? Was I go-ing to go through the prime years of my life waiting for Fridays? Looking forward 10 years was scarier. What was the impact I was going to have? The philosopher in me said that I had to find work that I could involve my-self in 24/7, while the realist said that it doesn't work that way, and I would grow to love my job.

This was also the time I first heard about Teach For India. Back in college, during those all night discussions where a group of en-gineering students would have the solution to every problem plaguing the country, education was an ever present theme. Well, here seemed to be a group who was doing something about it, instead of just talking like I was. But was teaching my passion? So once again, the realist intervened, and to be sure, I started volunteering. And that is when I realized that there are a few things more rewarding that teaching kids. They are always happy to see you, always smiling, honest, and innocent and have tonnes of po-tential waiting to be unlocked. I was starting to look forward to Saturday mornings. The realist was still skeptical of making such a move. So I de-cided to speak to a number of TFI fellows. Without fail, they all said only positive things about their time at TFI. This was new. I thought to myself, either this movement is amazing or Teach for India is brainwashing peo-

ple. Either way, it seemed interesting enough for me to apply.

I was lucky enough to get selected, but it was after that when TFI really hooked me. I started attending ses-sions, visited classrooms and began to understand the model. The kind of support I got was amazing. I real-ized that sometimes one just has to do what one wants. I did not want to look back years later as a frustrated old man saying, "Man I wish I had done that." Here I had the chance.

So this May, about 300 similar sto-ries met for an intensive 5 week train-ing program in Pune. It was here that I started to see the numbers come together and meet people from dif-ferent spheres determined to make a difference. There was a perpetual air of happiness and hope, a bubble where one kept discussing ideas long into the night, finding solutions for things considered so trivial like “how to teach counting better”.

But still, I had never taught a class. So a little more than 3 months ago, I walked in nervously, in front of an eager audience whose future I had the responsibility to shape. And within the first 2 minutes all the anxiety vanished. The children take a hold of you. There were more pressing prob-lems to address; like the best pro-cedure to minimize time spent in toilet breaks, or how to teach in Eng-lish to students who barely know the alphabet. Time flies by. They keep do-ing small things that keep making me laugh and motivate me through the day. It is tiring and it involves hard work. But every day when they back just to talk to me, or when I am walk-ing with them and see them try their best, it makes me want to work even harder. I still shout a lot, I struggle to teach to get 40 boys to listen to me for

even 5 minutes, but that only makes me come up with novel, more i n t e r e s t i n g ways of gain-ing their at-tention.

And then you finally see the results. You hear sto-ries of the alumni and you under-stand the im-

pact. You begin to dream of how diverse people will come together, each one a piece of a puzzle together forming a whole.

CITIZEN JOURNALISM

Travelling from Kanpur to Delhi after my Dusseh-ra vacation, I had to wait for my train at Kanpur Central. I saw a train ticket examiner (TTE) check-ing tickets at the exit gates of the station. He didn’t check all the passengers, only picking them out at random. All of a sudden he came across someone who had a ticket for himself but didn't have one for his young son. The TTE scolded the man and talked about rules and regulations and then went on to tell him about the penalty for being caught without a ticket. Though sorry for the passenger, I felt happy that the TTE was doing his duty. That was until the passenger took out a 50 rupee note from his pocket and slipped it into the official’s hand and the matter was settled then and there. Finally on the train on my way to Delhi and I see yet another TTE receiving money for giving a seat to a passenger who was on waiting list, but hadn’t been confirmed. I don’t blame the officials alone for these petty crimes, but every citizen who engages in this cor-ruption. This is an appeal to everyone to start fight-ing against this menace instead of succumbing to it.

Want to be productive at work? Then start your day early. You are probably thinking, “I do not have enough rest, how can I afford to wake up early?” I had the same thoughts before. After a while you will realize you cannot be productive unless you rise early.Time is finite. Each of us has only 24 hours. Each of us has finite energy. How well you balance both will be how productive you can be, at work or at home.

I have 3 young kids and my own business to run. Trying to balance how much work I put into my business, how much time I spend with my family and yet have time for my hobbies is all about how I can be productive with my time. You want to be productive at work or at home? Here's what you should do.

Be Productive: Be Productive: Start Your Day Early

Know Your Priorities3.Really, it is all about the choice you make and the priorities you have. If you know it is competitive out there in the corporate world, how can you be a better worker than the person who is also aiming for the position above you? How can you do more whether to impress or to get the relevant person’s attention?

Is It Always Fun, Fun, Fun?4.People who oppose to rising early typically have these excuses. I need personal time. I need to catch up with my friends; I need to know what is going on in the world. But really, most of these are just excuses for having some fun. Not that there is anything wrong with it. I am not saying giving it up.I am saying, there is a proper time and place for everything. Each activity has a price tag on it. Do one and you can’t do the other. The choice is yours. Whether it is catching up with friends till late night or falling behind in your work.

Cut Off Television5.I used to tell myself, I need the break. So, when the kids sleep I turn on the cable and watch whatever programs that catches my fancy. Often, I find myself not watching, just channel surfing. And I don't end up watching a full program. I decided one day to just give up on TV as it makes me sleep late and wake up tired. If you want to be productive, cut off TV. You are better off reading a book. Without TV, I have managed to finish many books which I have bought but never read.

Limit Internet Use2.The other big distraction that can make you sleep late is the internet. Probably because you will be checking your emails, updating your blog, Facebook, watching Youtube, etc. Try limiting the use of it at home, or switch it to the morning session.Nowadays, I check all my personal emails early in the morning. When I get into work, I find myself less tempted to check personal emails and such.

Rest Early, Rise Early1.You want to be productive? Rise early, read more books, have more energy, be more focused and set standards for others to catch up. It’s as simple as that.

Relax, you’re not on a highway to hell! Don’t waste this opportunity,

it won’t knock on your door the second time!

Waiting may be exhausting, but good things only come to those who wait!

Curiosity kills the cat, so you don’t have to do anything!

Things are almost never what they seem, people included!

Roadside signs take time to become clear. We see them in the far off distance as we’re driving. We know they provide an impor-tant, helpful message but must wait until we’re able to seize the brief opportunity to read it. What you believe now to be a warn-ing sign in the distance will soon prove to be a helpful beacon that you’ll be very glad of.

March 21 - April 19Aries

Just for now, leave all your hopelessness aside!

How much do you wish to reveal? Ah, perhaps I’d better rephrase that. What is - or isn’t - someone else’s business? To what extent are you obliged to divulge certain information or explain yourself? You appear to be attracting interest or attention in ways you might not prefer. Someone wants to know more, but do they have the right to demand to know as much they feel you’re obliged to provide? The answer is, they don’t.

May 21 - June 20Gemini

Something in your world is moving up a notch. It is being taken to a new and probably unexplored level. How do you feel about this? Do you feel scared? Intimi-dated? Wherever this change is occurring, you’ve had warning signs for some time but perhaps the word ‘warning’ implies you have reason to anticipate risk or danger. You needn’t be concerned that you might fail or struggle. You really are in safe hands now, in more ways than one.

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22Libra

A moment of patience can ward off a com-plete disaster yet there can be nothing more destructive sometimes than a moment of impatience. Something is coming to you as quickly as it can. It cannot arrive as quickly as you both wish it would because of univer-sal protocols and a space that has yet to be created for its arrival. Your job, for now, is to curb your impatience in the knowledge that something or someone really will have been waiting for.

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21Scorpio

We are all entitled to have an opinion. We’re equally entitled to believe whatever we choose to believe. Others, however, believe they’re entitled to inform us we’re wrong or misguided. Where does this perceived right come from? Are such people trying to be helpful…or might they be trying to provoke a defensive response from you? From where I’m sitting, it does appear to be the latter. Try not to rise to bait being set.

Nov. 22 - Dec. 21Sagittarius

You have a right to change your mind. Information that may have come to light in could result in a change of tactics or tweak to a plan but don’t see this as a setback now. As tempting as it may even be to throw in the proverbial towel, you have a chance to set something straight or put it back on track. This will require change and adjustment but bring optimism where it’s currently lacking.

It’s finally your time to shine!

Nobody really knows the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody!

Chaos in the midst of chaos isn’t funny, but chaos in the midst of order is!

Truth is stranger than fiction, because fiction tends to make sense!

Speak now! Or forever hold your peace!

A smile is a curve that sets everything straight!

Pluto, the planet of transformation, has been dormant in the area of your chart associated with commitment since April. Today, it starts moving forward again. Recent months have seen you in a state of preparation and assessment where your commitment to someone, or possibly an organization, is concerned and it’s here that something has been rebuilt or restruc-tured. You will soon be very aware of how much stronger and knowledgeable you are through it doing so.

June 21 - July 22Cancer

Oscar Wilde once said ‘nothing is more aggravating than calmness’. Most living things on this planet need, and often thrive, on routine. We know where we stand with what is predictable. We feel comfortable where there’s monotony. However, somewhere in your world, a certain ongoing process has become unimaginative, restrictive and tedious. A tiny bit of chaos will bring much needed excitement and optimism to an area it’s needed within.

July 23 - Aug. 22Leo

What isn’t making sense? Who isn’t making sense? Why are you grappling with annoy-ing, senseless issues now? Why is that – ok, enough questions. I suspect you’re creating quite a list yourself where demands on your patience are concerned. What isn’t making sense will become clearer soon. An opportunity to for you to provide the ‘voice of reason’ where a sensitive matter is concerned is coming.

Jan. 20 - Feb. 18Aquarius

What about you? Has an unseen, supreme force deliberately overlooked you when distributing happiness and luck? It might be easy to look around your world and believe that others are benefiting from fortuitous situations whilst you are made to keep your nose to a tedious grindstone. Very shortly, you will have something to smile about. This will then become something to be extremely glad for.

Feb. 19 - March 20Pisces

The sky speaks clearly of a perceived need on your part to please several people. You seem willing to go to extraordinary lengths to ensure their comfort, happiness and security. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with this per se, you might be taking a harsh and unfair view of how obliged you really are to appease certain people. They might not actually be expecting as much as you seem willing to give.

UDAIPURUdaipur, the `City of Dawn’ seems many worlds away from the golden sand dunes and desert land that epitomise Rajasthan.

A city of shimmering lakes, of elegant palaces built of white marble, of flower-

filled gardens and gurgling fountains and of a tradition of regal living that takes some beating: Udaipur is exquisite, alluring and very easy to fall in love with. There is much

to see and do round Udaipur.

City Palace

Jagdish Mandir Jag Mandir

The Lakes of Udaipur

The City Palace is the largest of its kind in Rajasthan and consists of a dazzling combination of palaces, pavilions, terraces, courtyards, hanging gardens and more, all splendidly ornamented- many of the chambers embellished with art inspired by the Mughal style of decoration. A large portion of the City Palace is today a museum, home to a fine collection of art and artefacts related to the royal family of Udaipur.

Udaipur is known to many as the `City of Lakes’, and its lakes are truly beautiful- a welcome and very refreshing change from the arid sands of the rest of Rajasthan. The main lake of Udaipur is Lake Pichola, which is fringed by bathing ghats, temples, havelies, gardens and palaces. On Lake Pichola are two islands- Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas- both of which can be visited as part of a boat ride across the shimmering waters of the lake. Boats depart at regular intervals from Bansi Ghat (also known as the City Palace Jetty).Udaipur’s two other lakes are Fateh Sagar and Udai Sagar. The latter is an artificial lake, created in 1678 by Maharana Fateh Singh; in the centre of the lake lies a picturesque garden island known as Nehru Park.

Constructed in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh, the Jagdish Mandir lies in close proximity to the main entrance of the City Palace. The largest temple in Udaipur, the Jagdish Mandir enshrines a black stone statue of Lord Vishnu, known here as Jagannath, the lord of the universe. The temple’s exterior is of polished local stone, its main entrance being through a series of steps leading up between two large statues of caparisoned elephants crafted from white marble. The Jagdish Mandir’s most outstanding feature is its beautiful ornamentation- its walls are decorated with delicate carvings that have been likened to those of the famous temples at Khajuraho.

Also known as the Lake Garden Palace, Jag Mandir stands on an island in Lake Pichola, surrounded by a vast courtyard paved with tiles of black and white stone, adjoining which is the Garden Courtyard, an expanse of elegantly landscaped rose gardens around which are scattered flowering trees and carefully maintained flow-erbeds. The Gul Mahal building was where the Mughal the emperor Shahjahan stayed with his family while in rebellion against his father Jahangir. Other than the Gul Mahal, the most striking feature of Jag Mandir are eight almost life-size statues of elephants carved from white marble, which stand as if guarding the main boat ramp and entrance.

Saheliyon ki Bari

Literally the `Garden of the Maids of Honour’, the Saheliyon ki Bari is the foremost of Udaipur’s many beautiful gardens. It is a modest sized but pretty ornamental garden with five fountains, four pools of water and a series of elegantly carved pavilions, and ornate elephants. Named for the royal ladies, who came here for a stroll and a change of atmosphere, the garden is even today a beautifully quiet and relaxing place to wander around in, to relax or to take photographs of lotus pools and pavilions.

Travel Folio:Udaipur is best visited in the months between October and March as this is when the weather is conducive for sightseeing forays.

Direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai operate to Udaipur. Train connections from the metro cities are limited, but there is an overnight train from Jaipur. It is also very convenient to drive or take a bus to Udaipur from anywhere within Rajasthan.

There are a number of mid-priced heritage hotels –some palaces converted into hotels and they recreate the grandeur of the days of the maharaja. For a truly luxurious stay there is the famed Lake Palace or Oberoi Udai Vilas.

Dal Batti Choorma, Gatte ki Sabzi and Lal Maas are the must-eats in Udaipur. For vegetarian fare stop by at the Jaiwana Rooftop Restaurant and for authentic Rajasthani cuisine try Ambrai at Hanuman Ghat.

Traditional handicrafts, block printed textiles, embroidered bags and silver jewellery is what Udaipur is known for. The main shopping area runs from City Palace to Jagdish Temple Street and to the Clock Tower. For beaded bags and jewellery head to Chandpole Road and if you are looking for basic handicrafts try the Govt run Rajasthali.

The Pichhwai paintings of Nathdwara48 km north of Udaipur lies the village of Nathdwara, famous for its temple to Lord Krishna, a shrine that is much revered by the many thousands of devotees who visit it each year. But the Shrinathji Temple is not Nathdwara’s only claim to fame; this otherwise obscure village is also home to one of Rajasthan’s most beautiful forms of art, that of pichhwai painting. Pichhwai is inextricably tied up with the village’s guardian deity, for this form of art always depicts Krishna himself, in his different forms and moods.

Pichhwai paintings are cloth paintings- vividly coloured, with bold lines and intricate details. They were traditionally used only to be hung on temple walls, as a backdrop for the idol enshrined at the temple; with changing times, however, smaller versions of pichhwai are also being created for homes. Paintings are readily available in both Nathdwara as well as in Udaipur itself, and for those who would like to buy one, here’s a tip: remember that a genuine pichhwai always features a cow in the picture!

There are various patterned scarves that

are available; however you should only keep one or two of these types as they could restrict your choice of clothing. Wearing a patterned or em-broidered scarf with printed clothes may end up looking a little tacky. It can be a pretty difficult task to pull off both together, so make sure the statement you’re making is either the scarf or the top. A plain shirt with a printed scarf or vice-versa will make all the difference. So don’t make it so busy!

For a business related event, silk scarves are the way to go. Team up a formal dress with a pretty green or pink scarf (depending on what color your dress is!) and it will make you look formal as well as sassy. Don’t be afraid of going in for wild colors like Purple, orange and fuchsia as they will liven up your entire look.

Beaded scarves tend to use a variety of materials like plastic, metallic and glass. Patterns are created using these beads to make a beautiful and classy scarf. While

it may look amazing, you will have to treat it with utmost care.

If you don’t, then all it takes is for one to slip and the rest will follow.

Men might be more interested in plain plaid or woolen scarves with mild colors and nothing too jar-ring. Wearing a scarf with a formal to wear t-shirt is fast becoming a trend among men these days.

While dressing, decide the ways you can wear the scarf, wearing the same scarf in different ways will give an effective get up. The texture of the scarf also makes a difference while you wrap it around your neck, so bear that in mind before you make your purchase. One of the ways would be to wear it like a tie around your neck with one (or both) ends hanging down the front. Another way is to wrap the scarf a couple times around your neck and tie their ends into a knot on either side. Or you could even use the scarf like a bandana or a head band to keep the hair off your face. Whichever way makes you feel most comfortable and confident is the one to choose!

It’s a wrap!

When you are buying a scarf, make sure that you can see yourself

wearing it with at least two out-fits, single colored scarves look

good with prints and multicolor-ed scarves look good with plains.

If you’re going in for a designer brand like Louis Vuitton or Burberry then pick one with vibrant colors that

you can match with several outfits. If you want to make some jaws drop

then go in for a scarf that matches your skin tone, hair or eye color.

Let’s get down to business

What to look for

want to accomplish by making some of the following changes.

Pictures are very effective. If you want your career to take off, if would be appropriate to hang pictures or posters that feature a balloon rising in the air , or a flock of birds flying or even a aircraft or a rocket speeding up.

Hanging a mirror in the east or south – east of your home will generate more uplifting and posi-tive chi energy, which is helpful for improving your job prospects .

Water feature near the main door or in the southeast area will activate the prosperity area of you house /work-place and brings more opportunity and satisfaction in your life. Arrange the spout of the fountain, that the water is pouring into the house .

This Feng Shui cure and protection will improve your success, wealth and prosperity luck and enhance your opportuni-ties in life. By sleeping with your head pointing at your personal Seng Chi (Success) Direction and can work miracles.

The position of both your desk and chair are vital. A most common mistake is to place a desk, up against a wall with layer of shelves towering above, heavily laden with books, magazines and im-portant papers. This is a Feng Shui Nightmare! From this perspective you are likely to feel trapped, overburdened and uninspired.

Make sure that you have a desk that is strong, stable and clutter free, both on the surface and within the drawers. Also make sure that the chair you use is stable and gives your back good support.

Place the customer’s chair so that he sits with the door to his back. His chair should be slightly lower than yours so that he will look up to you.

Daylight from the window can be very uplifting and inspiring but try to avoid positioning your desk so that you are looking directly out of the window.

Images of stability, such as moun-tainous landscape at your back and images of moving water such as lakes, streams and oceans can help bring you inspiration if placed in the front.

Hang metal wind chime outside the front door to help control movement within your career. When hung with this particular intention, chime will ring a breath of fresh air into your job search .

It is better to be slightly more Yang when looking for a job because this type of energy encourages you to feel confident and assertive. Potential employers are more likely to view people with Yang energy as being alert, decisive and focused. Absorb-ing more Chi energy of the east will also be useful when you start job – hunting because this particular type of energy helps you to feel enthusi-astic and positive.

Sports Harbhajan, Yuvraj rubbish Majeed's claims

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS): Harb-hajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh have rubbished the claims of Pakistani cricket agent Mazhar Majeed, who is being tried for spot-fixing charges at a London court, that he had access to these two Indian cricketers.

The tape of Majeed bragging to the undercover reporter, Mazhar Mahmood of the now defunct tab-loid News of the World, was played in the London court where he said he "had access to Harbhajan and Yu-vraj".

The tape was played during the fourth day of the trial of former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and pacer Mohammad Asif, who are al-leged to have bowled predetermined no-balls for cash.

Both Harbhajan and Yuvraj de-nied knowing Majeed.

"Who is he (Majeed)? Such re-marks are nothing but rubbish. We will bring to the notice of the BCCI, who will take necessary course of ac-tion against this fellow," Harbhajan said from Nagpur, where he is play-

ing in the Challenge series. Yuvraj echoed similar sentiments.

Majeed told Mahmood that he had several Pakistan players under his control, including Salman Butt, brothers Kamran and Umar Akmal, and Shoaib Malik and "had access" to other star cricketers like Chris Gayle, Brett Lee, and Ricky Ponting.

He also accused the Australian players of being the "biggest" match-fixers in the world cricket.

Cricket Australia dismissed the claims as "outlandish".

Indian offered Majeed $1.2m to lose Oval

Test, court hears London, Oct 11 (IANS): A mysterious Indian contact offered Pakistan cricket agent Mazhar Majeed $1.2 million to arrange for Pakistan to throw a Test match against England, a court in London heard on Tuesday.

Majeed, 36, was se-cretly recorded by un-dercover reporter of the now defunct The News of the World, Mazher Mahmood, discussing to lose last summer's game at the Oval with a shadowy contact in India, London's South-wark Crown Court was told.

Majeed called his Indian contact on the morning of August 21 last year, the final day of the Oval Test, in the presence of Mahmood, the Daily Mail reported.

He allegedly claimed it was "not a problem" to fix the match result and referred to the number of players working with him, saying: "Boss, you know how many I've got; you know that they do it."

After the call, Ma-jeed told the journalist: "There's big, big money in results, I tell you, you can see that." However, Pakistan had beaten England by four wickets to secure a memorable Test victory at the Oval in south London that day. C

ICC goes along with Indian board, DRS is not mandatoryDubai, Oct 11 (IANS): The Inter-national Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to do away with the man-datory use of the Umpires Decision Review System (DRS) and has gone back to the position existing before June, that is to leave it to the boards involved in a series.

The ICC Executive Board, at its meeting here on Monday, also ap-proved the new qualification system to fill the places from the Associates and Affiliates for the 2015 World Cup to be played in Australia-New Zealand.

Among other key decisions taken at the meeting, presided over by its president Sharad Pawar, the ICC

has agreed to make the findings of the independent governance review panel public, and it is also in favor of a Test Championship in 2013.

As for replacing the Champions Trophy, the ICC said it realizes the significant commercial challenge. "It clarified that without the support and consent of the ICC's broadcast partner, ESPN Star Sports, the fi-nancial implications on the Mem-bers and the development of the game would be significant."

On the DRS, the Board reversed the decision it took at the annual conference in Hong Kong in June when it came to an agreement with the member boards on the use of

technology. The Hot Spot was made mandatory subject to availability, but the use of ball-tracking was left to the playing boards to decide.

The ICC has been forced to fall in line with the Indian Board's view after the technology goof-ups during India's tour of England in the summer. The Indian Board was highly critical of the Hot Spot which was responsible for Rahul Dravid being given out more than once wrongly. However, the DRS would still be used in all ICC global events and the Board stated that it supports the use of technology and would continue to work on its de-velopment.

Pakistan hockey chief says keen on bilateral ties with India

Karachi, Oct 11 (IANS): The Paki-stan Hockey Federation (PHF) says it is keen on reviving active hockey ties with India and it is working at all lev-els to see the two countries start play-ing bilaterally again.

PHF president Qasim Zia said on Tuesday that PHF was trying its best to resurrect bilateral hockey ties be-tween the two countries in a bid to uplift standard of hockey in the re-gion.

Zia also said the federation was planning to start indoor hockey from next year so that the players could practice during the off season.

He said hockey in Pakistan was on the right track and it would soon re-gain its lost status.

On the inclusion of senior players in the team for the London Olympics, Zia said ample opportunities would be given to every player to get into the team irrespective of the age.

Tennis nationals: Rutuja stuns top seed Prerna

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS): Rutuja Bhosale produced a power-packed performance to shock top-seed Pre-rna Bhambri 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 and enter the second round of Fenesta National Tennis Championship at the DLTA complex on Tuesday.

The 15-year-old Pune girl dished out stunning angles and fluent ground strokes to get past Prerna, to whom she had lost in straight sets in their first meeting at the same venue

in June. She, however, was a trans-

formed player this day and matched Prerna stroke by stroke to go up a set.

The 18-year-old Prerna, however, stepped up her game in the second and soon it was a set all.

The Delhi girl was then quick to move up 3-1 in the decider before being broken back. A stream of errors al-lowed Rutuja to inflict another break in the ninth game, only to drop her serve immediately, when she was serving for the match.

A beaming Rutuja, who is coached by former Davis Cup-per and Arjuna Awardee San-dip Kirtane at Pune's Deccan Gymkhana, admitted work-ing on her game after losing to Prerna in the quarterfinals of ITF women's tournament in June.

Prerna's cousin Yuki, how-ever had to face no such hic-cups and breezed into the men's singles second round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Vivek Shokeen.

Second-seeded Yuki, who is returning from a knee injury, said he is fit and raring to do well at the tournament.

In the other men's singles matches, top seed Vishnu Vardhan had to dig deep to overcome 1999 champion Sunil Sipaeya 7-6(3), 6-3. He next plays qualifier Ronak Manu-ja.

In the women's singles first round, veteran Rushmi Chakravarty hardly broke sweat in dismissing Delhi girl Vaniya Dangwal 6-1, 6-0. Comeback girl Isha Lakhani too had it easy as she packed off Aishwarya Aggarwal 6-0, 6-1.

London, Oct 11 (IANS): Emma Watson's former boy-friend Francis Boulle ended their relationship as he thought she was too famous. The "Harry Potter" actress briefly dated Boulle, who now stars in British reality TV show "Made In Chel-sea". The actor said he called time on the romance because he didn't want to just be known as some-one else's boyfriend.

"We had a bit of a thing a while back but I have always been an ambitious person and I want to achieve my own notoriety for what I've done," Boulle told Heat magazine.

"That's why I chose not to pursue it any longer, because I didn't want to be the boyfriend of some child actress," he added.

Moss has prudish

daughter London, Oct 11 (IANS): Kate Moss thinks her daughter Lila Grace is prudish when it comes to make-up. The 37-year-old supermodel feels her nine-year-old daughter tells her to remove make-up as she prefers to see a fresh-faced, natural mummy, reports femalefirst.co.uk. "I al-ways take my make-up off, because otherwise my daughter will come in and say, 'Mummy, tut-tut'. She doesn't like it. She likes the fresh-faced, natural mummy, when I've got my hair in a bun and no make-up on," she said.

"Lila is quite prudish. She'll only wear a little bit of lip gloss or something. But she is into nail art. I think Lila is beautiful; she's so innocent and has that fresh face. She's gorgeous, but obviously she is my daughter," she added.

Dad would kill me if I pose nude: Emma Stone

London, Oct 10 (IANS): Actress Emma Stone, who is reportedly dating her "Spider-Man" co-star Andrew Garfield, says she would never bare all for a movie because her father would "kill" her if she displayed skin. "My dad would kill me if I posed naked. He wouldn't speak to me again and I really love my dad, so that's always something that makes me a little nervous," contactmuisc.com quoted her as saying. Despite their reservations about nudity in films, Emma admits her parents always encour-aged her to fulfill her dreams.

"They are the coolest parents in the world. They taught us respon-sibility and the need to own up to our actions and that honesty really is the only policy."

"My parents always made me feel as though I could do anything - not in a cheerleading, 'You're the greatest!' kind of way; it was more, 'You're going to have to work hard, but we'll support you however we can'. Just to have that kind of back-ing was incredible," she said.

Still many things I should be doing: AmitabhMumbai, Oct 11 (IANS): Amitabh Bachchan, who turned 69 on Tuesday and is the busiest entertainer in the country, says there are still many things that cross his mind which he feels he should be doing. "There are many things that cross my mind which I feel I should also be doing. Some-day perhaps I shall find time for them too," Amitabh told IANS in an interview. Asked whether the excitement of becoming a grandfather has sunk in yet, he quipped: "Yes, long ago." Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai-Bach-chan are expecting their first child soon.

The megastar also said he finds his life unworthy of biographical documentation by him.

"My life has been blessed and I am ever grateful to the

Maker and my parents for giving me that. Beyond that I find it unworthy of biographical documentation." Asked whether he had any unfulfilled desires or anything that he would like to do, he said: “I hope there are unfulfilled desires within me but to say what they shall be is difficult to put a finger on. I can tell you what is important for me today, not what has been important for me in this past year. That I shall not be able to remember. And that is how I would like it to be.”And what did the actor wish on his birthday? "I wish another day to pass in peace! One of the best ways to bring in birthdays is to be working at what you need to be working on ... I work because I need to ... love !!" he wrote on his Twitter page.

London, Oct 11 (IANS): Singer Gary Barlow says he hates taking time off from his career.

The 40-year-old singer, who has three children -- 11-year-old Daniel, eight-year-old Emily and two-year-old Daisy -- with wife Dawn, hates hav-ing nothing to do, reports contactmusic.com.

"I'm not a good time-off

person. I'm awful on holiday. It comes from having that period where I didn't work. That really was the worst bit," he told Observer magazine. "It wasn't not being famous any more or even not being a recording artist. It was having nobody who needed me, no phones ringing, nothing to do. Because I'm still too young to do nothing," he added.
