DEFENDERS OF POTENTIAL

As we reflect on 2018, so many moments serve as vivid reminders of the important challenges humanity is up against. Challenges that test our resolve and for young people, especially, it is a time to lean on trusted adults in their lives. Strong healthy relationships with trusted adults matter!! Our young people are born with the capacity to reach their full potential. Together, we clear their paths through their life challenges, and defend that potential.

Mentoring provides a hand UP! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio is deeply committed to continuing to serve more youth and families; to keeping our unrelenting focus on using expertise and data to build longer, stronger matches with the greatest possible outcomes; and to developing strong partnerships with more community organizations and businesses. We are committed to strengthening our social capital by engaging many more volunteers with diverse cultures and backgrounds, and to growing our community of investors to take our mission to the next level.

The fact is that having a Big Brother or Big Sister reduces engagement in risky behaviors, builds academic expectations and competency, and strengthens connectivity to friends and family. Our outcomes in central Ohio demonstrate our positive impact: 99.7% of the youth in our programs reported improving or maintaining in at least one of the eight categories we measure, and 98.8% reported improving or maintaining in at least two.

With YOUR support, we served more than 6,200 kids last year in our one-to-one mentoring programs plus our programs at our Camp Oty’Okwa in the Hocking Hills. But there are so many more. In the margins, in the shadows, and even standing right in front of us, there are more than 8.5 million kids in our country who do not have a mentor. We are a strong community that cares and we can do more!

Our exciting new brand reflects the bold urgency around our mission. We thank you for your generous support, and we ask for your continued engagement as we rededicate ourselves to our crucial mission. Together, we will change the world!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO AND BOARD CHAIR

“Nazir and his mentor, Alex Sheets, met in Project Mentor in 2016. Alex encouraged Nazir to practice his reading and writing skills using literacy materials donated by Highlights and Zaner-Bloser. In 2017, Nazir

experienced a traumatic event. Alex helped Nazir channel his positive energy and cope with

his loss.”

DEFENDING POTENTIAL

Together, we are Defenders of Potential. All of us. That means volunteers, families, Littles, partners, investors, staff, Board Members. Our mission is urgent. We are driven to defend the potential we see in every child. And we know that with each child whose path we clear, there is a better future for our community as a whole.

The mentoring relationships that we provide the youth we serve form a critical foundation, giving them essential assets, guidance and stability. It is our responsibility to surround all central Ohio youth with the support they need, empowering them to envision their biggest future and igniting their potential to achieve it.

We know this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together. The entire tapestry of our community will strengthen as we build the social capital that creates value and brings positive change for generations to come. Please stand together with us as we invest in our youth and change the world for the better!

“Joe Macklin is an amazing mentor. He encourages Jesua to step out of his

comfort zone and empowers him to be a self-confident individual. Joe helps Jesua see the potential he has in himself, and guides him in the right direction. Jesua’s family considers him like a real brother and part of

their family.”

EMPOWERING POTENTIAL

RESULTS FROM OUR PROGRAMS**: WHO WE SERVED THROUGH OUR ONE-TO-ONE MENTORING PROGRAMS*

were minority youth

The children we serve face adversity in their lives, including challenges such as poverty or violence. Allied with their parents and guardians, we stand in their corner to clear their path to their biggest possible future.

In addition, we reach out with intentionality to children from Spanish-speaking families, pregnant and parenting teens, and children who have an incarcerated parent. Our work also includes our Literacy Program, a strategic enhancement to our School-Based Mentoring program. In 2018, we introduced Bigs in Blue, an exciting new program that matches police officers with children who need mentors.

Little Brothers and Little Sisters who participate in our one-to-one mentoring programs consistently demonstrate positive outcomes. The categories we measure are linked through research to long-term outcomes important to our Littles, their families and our community. Last year, 99.7% of our youth reported improving or maintaining in at least one of the eight categories we measure, and 98.8% reported improving or maintaining in at least two.

EVERY CHILD HAS POTENTIAL. IT’S OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO EMPOWER THAT POTENTIAL, AND BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS’ PROGRAMS ARE PROVEN TO DO JUST THAT.

“Big Brother Napoleon Bell and Little Brother Jason are a great

match that is always full of energy. They love to bond over sports! So when we had OSU vs Michigan tickets to make available for matches, I knew there was no one who would love that great game more

than Napoleon and Jason. They enjoyed the game from the 50 yard line. It was an experience

that neither of them will forget!”

COMMUNITY-BASED MENTORINGThe youth in our community-based program meet up for several hours each month with their adult Big Brother or Big Sister. With input and approval from the Little’s parent/caregiver, they decide on their activities together. Our professional staff provides coaching to ensure they develop a strong relationship and work toward the goals they set together. Through regular contact and research tools developed nationally for Big Brothers Big Sisters, we monitor the strength of our matches and the progress of our Littles. This allows our staff to step in when necessary to defend the potential of our Littles and their families.

18-year old Jared has been matched with Big Brother Daniel Jessberger since he was seven. From the beginning, Jared’s mother noticed that he was happier and expressed his emotions better when he spent time with his Big Brother. Jared is a hard worker who does well in school and exhibits good behavior. With Daniel at his side, he has developed the self-confidence to overcome challenges in his life, and is planning to continue on to college after he graduates from high school in 2019.

SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING Each School-based Mentoring match meets on a one-to-one basis at a program each week at the student’s school. A Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member brings activities designed to strengthen the mentoring relationship, develop the student’s social-emotional competencies, and provide the foundation the student needs to succeed in school. Volunteers for this program come from business, government, community and faith-based Volunteer Partners, as well as the community at large. Project Mentor is our School-based Mentoring collaboration with Columbus City Schools.

Destinee and her mentor, Somers Martin, have been meeting weekly at school since 2012. Somers has coached Destinee on academics and life skills, and has also been there through some very serious challenges that faced her family. Somers helped Destinee build on her own internal resilience to focus on her future and prepare to start college next year.

AMACHI MENTORING One of the most serious traumas a child may experience is the incarceration of a parent. Through no fault of their own, thousands of central Ohio youth experience parental incarceration, and research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) demonstrates a clear relationship between trauma and the risk of physical and mental illness in adulthood. Through our Amachi mentoring program, we reach out to central Ohio children who have an incarcerated parent, and match them with a mentor. The Big at their side when they need support the most empowers them to stay on track to realize their potential.

Little Brother Ta’Juan and Big Brother Sandip Suvedi were matched in 2016. Ta’Juan and his eight younger brothers and sisters live with their grandmother, and his grandmother wanted him to have a strong male role model. Sandip, an engineer in the auto industry, loves the fact that Ta’Juan enjoys building and creating things…and knows every car on the road! Along with his wife Sarah, Sandip is helping Ta’Juan develop important life skills and empowering him for success.

HISPANIC MENTORING In Franklin County, nearly 40% of Latino boys under the age of five are living in poverty. Many face multiple hurdles on their path to adulthood: the trauma of poverty, coupled with cultural and language differences. This is just one of the many startling statistics that reinforce the importance of closing the mentoring gap to provide more Latino youth a mentor. Through our Hispanic Mentoring Program, we reach out to Spanish-speaking families and match their children with bilingual volunteers. Together, we are defending the potential of our Hispanic youth who will undoubtedly help shape our community’s future.

In 2010, when Marvella Duarte Coon volunteered to mentor a child through her then employer, Nationwide, she had no idea that she would still be matched to Jasmine this many years later. Jasmine and Marvella have built a strong relationship through changes in both of their lives. It was a special moment for both when Jasmine’s family asked Marvella to crown Jasmine at her Quinceañera!

CAMP OTY’OKWA Camp Oty’Okwa, our year-round camp in the Hocking Hills, touched the lives of 4,700 children last year! Camp is a nurturing environment where children grow and learn to own their potential. Like our one-to-one mentoring programs, our Camp Oty’Okwa programs are data-driven. Last year, our campers improved in all five dimensions we measured: perceived competence (up 79%), responsibility (up 75%), teamwork (up 76%), affinity for nature (up 71%), and camp connectedness (up 74%). In addition to summer camp, we provide year-round environmental education programs that allow schools to meet their academic content standards in an experiential way.

Little Brother Kac’Hwone has experienced trauma in his ten years. He is a strong, positive, resilient youth, and Big Brother Kevin Truitt has helped him stay on that path since they were matched in 2016. In addition to the strong relationship he has formed with Kevin, Kac’Hwone and his sister have attended our Camp Oty’Okwa. Their mother Andrea was all for it because she has very positive memories of time she spent there in her youth.

MENTOR CENTRAL OHIO MENTOR Central Ohio, a division of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio, is dedicated to increasing the capacity, effectiveness and sustainability of mentoring programs serving central Ohio youth. MENTOR Central Ohio consults with central Ohio mentoring programs, and provides evidence-based resources and training. MENTOR Central Ohio is affiliated with MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, which is fueling the quality and quantity of mentoring relationships on a national level.

CAMP OTY’OKWA

Mentors are learning how to build a relationship with their mentee prior to being matched in a mentoring relationship in this training session provided by MENTOR Central Ohio. Providing training is just one of the many ways in which MENTOR Central Ohio empowers its community partners to improve outcomes for thousands of youth and works to close the mentoring gap.

OUR GENEROUS INVESTORSBig Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio is a volunteer- and donor-supported organization. We depend on the generosity of our community to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

We deeply appreciate the generous support of individuals, corporations and foundations who help us defend the potential of children (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018). For a list of $100+ donors, please visit bbbscentralohio.org.

DAVID AND CAROL SCHIRNER LEGACY FUNDThe David and Carol Schirner Legacy Fund was established in 2018 to honor the major contribution that the Schirners have made to Camp Oty’Okwa throughout more than 40 years. The fund supports the Schirners’ vision: to never turn youth away from Camp Oty’Okwa because of inability to pay. Contributions from generous investors throughout 2018 are helping ensure financial self-reliance for Camp Oty’Okwa ($250+).

MiZion met her mentor Tracey Davis when she was in 7th grade. Now a senior on track to graduate from the Visual Arts program at Fort Hayes Career Center,

MiZion has her eye on college and a career in

graphic design. The two have focused on academics and self-confidence during their meetings. MiZion says Tracey taught her “as long as you put effort into what you’re doing, you’ll always come out with something

you’re proud of at the end of the day.”
