CUAC Art Workshop: Your Natural Body and Its Daily Life:

CUAC, a non-profit contemporary art organization

operating in downtown SLC, combines forces with The City

Library to offer unique, free art workshops for preschoolers

(ages3-5) and elementary school students (ages 5+). Each

week will present a new experience and new information,

and participants are encouraged to attend as many or as few

sessions as their schedule allows. No registration necessary.

In April, the workshops will focus on the theme of Your

Natural Body and Its Daily Life. In order for young artists to

develop their work, they must conduct research, not only

about their surroundings and technique, but also learning

about themselves and the human body. This month, kids

will explore anatomy, nutrition, and the human mind; all in

order to give the artist a better relationship with an

understanding of their own complex body.

Annie and her Little Sister came

out in a BIG way to support this

worked to raise over $500 in

support of the agency’s mission

to match kids in 1:1

relationships with caring adults

from our community. Thank-

you!! They can put fundraising

on their list of “firsts” of which

they’ve done together as match

over the past almost 2.5 years

along with a reading challenge,

baking, Lagoon, painting, the

zoo, service projects, and all of

their other adventures. Big Sister Annie

We want to give a BIG thank you to all of the other matches who participated in Bowel for Kids’ Sake.

Whether you started a team, donated or volunteered at the bowling parties. We can’t do any of this

without our fabulous Bigs.

FUN QUESTIONS:

Socrates one of the greatest philosophers of all time, taught his

students by asking questions instead of him just lecturing them. In

doing this, he allowed the student to discover and understand their

own belief of the topic at hand. From him we learn that all thinking

comes from asking questions and that asking one question should

lead to asking more questions.

You can go to any planet in the solar system, which would you go to?

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why?

If you were stuck on an island and could only have three things, what would they be? You

can have one other person with you, who would it be?

What would you do with a million dollars?

Anything you touch can turn into anything you want. What would you touch and what

would you turn that thing you touched into?

*Your Little not responding to any of these questions? Try giving them a choice between one or the

other.

CHOOSE

YOUR

POISON: -Would you rather have the ability to time travel

or teleportation?

-You figure out you can secretly read people’s

minds. No one knows yet, would you tell

anyone?

-Would you rather live in a world where huge,

friendly gummy bears walk around, or live in a

world where hover boards exist?

-Would you rather live on 1,000 year life or live

ten 100 year lives?

NOT A SIMPLE

QUESTION: 1) If we learn from our mistakes, why are

we always so afraid to make a mistake?

A: In general, most people feel that making a

mistake is a bad thing, like it’s a failure, when

in actuality it can help you improve and make

you better.

2) In the haste of our daily lives, what are we

not seeing?

A: Most of us are so busy in our lives from

day to day looking towards the future, that we

forget we live in the moment and take in the

surrounds. Take two minutes with your Little

outside to just sit there and take everything

in.

QUOTES TO

THINK ABOUT: “An eye for an eye only makes the

world bling.” -Mahatma Gandhi

-We can’t fight hate with hate. It can only

lead to more problems. We should always find

an alternative in responding to being wronged

by someone. We should now allow ourselves

to see in the blindness our own aggression.

Love or kindness might be this outlet we need.

“When I went to school, they asked

me what I wanted to be when I

grew up. I wrote down “Happy.”

They told me I didn’t understand

the assignment and I told them

they didn’t understand life.”

- John Lennon

-In life we get so caught up in what everyone

expects us to want, when all we really want is

to be “happy” as the famous John Lennon

simply states.

Mentoring Tip

SOMETHING TO

THINK ABOUT:

Inner Beauty……

What is true beauty? Is it simply something

based upon a person’s outside appearance?

Ellen Degeneres once said, “True beauty is not

related to what color your hair is or what color

your eyes are. True beauty is about who you are

as a human being, your principles, and your

moral compass.”

The media has influenced our culture’s ideals of

beauty, and most of the time these ideals are

almost physically impossible to achieve,

especially due to the increasingly popular use of

Photoshop when editing photos. This video,

found at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRlpIkH3b5I

, takes four regular women and gives them the

opportunity to become professionally made-up,

photographed, and Photoshopped. The women

then describe their thoughts and reactions after

viewing themselves in that manner. One woman

said, “This is how I always wanted to see

myself, but now that I see it, I’m questioning

why I ever wanted to look like that.”

Think about how we view a work of art, a

landscape in nature or the sunset. These things

are appreciated, enjoyed and simply taken in. No

superficial judgments cloud their true beauty.

Try looking at yourself and others in the same

way. True beauty includes letting go of

detrimental stereotypes and embracing yourself

and others just the way they are.

Mentoring Tip

Everything you do counts……

Everything you do has an impact on someone,

even if it doesn't feel like it makes much of a

difference. If you can help a whole (group of

people) try just starting with one person because

it will mean a lot to that one person. A great

example is found in The Starfish Story. (There are

many versions of the story, so feel free to change

it how you will) The story goes something like

this…

As the old man walked the beach at dawn,

he noticed a boy running back and forth from the

beach to the edge of the water. As the man got

closer, he noticed he was picking up starfish that

had washed up on the beach and was throwing

them back in the ocean. When he finally reached

the boy, the man asked the boy what he was

doing.

The boy replied “The starfish will die if I

don't get them back into the ocean before the sun

comes out.” The man responded, “But the beach

goes on for miles, and there are millions of

starfish on the beach.” How can your effort

possibly make a difference?”

The boy looked at the starfish that he had

barely picked up and then threw it gently in the

waves. “It made a difference to that one” He said

running to the next one.

Ask your little what this means to them. This boy

even against the odds of millions of starfish

knowing he can’t save them all, still does all that

he can because he knows it makes a difference to

the ones he does come into contact with.
