On the second Sunday of Advent each year, the Church leads us to the Jordan River, to hear the message of John the Baptist and put it into action in our lives. The reason why the Church talks about John at the Jordan is because he was the one chosen by God from all eternity to get the people ready to receive His Son, who was already walking toward the Jordan River to inaugurate His public ministry. Advent means ‘coming toward’. Through Advent, we are called to prepare for God’s coming toward us-in the past, 2000 years ago in Bethlehem, in the future, with the power and glory of heaven and in the present, in His Word and in the Eucharist. Through John, we are called to get ourselves ready to receive the Lord who is coming. John tells us to ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.’ John is telling us that to get ready for the Lord who is coming this Advent, we need to prepare a way for Him. We need to make straight the paths. For us, that pathway will be traced in our hearts. It will not be made in the desert but in our life. What John the Baptist is calling us to is conversion. The Lord is coming for us in Advent, but for Him to reach His destination, we have to convert. ‘To make straight the paths of the Lord’ means to clear the path of sin, which is the obstacle for the Lord to come into our lives. John speaks of valleys, mountains, uneven ground and rough places. We need to call them by their right names- pride, sloth, lust, violence, dishonesty, hy-pocrisy, selfishness, superficiality, sensuality, hatred, drunkenness, addiction and more. We have to make low the mountains of our pride and egocentrism. We have to fill in the valleys that come from a shallow prayer life and the indifferent way of living our faith. You need to straighten out whatever crooked paths you have been walking. You might be involved in some ’secret sin’. Jesus calls us this Advent to end it. If you are involved in dishonest practices at work or at home, you need to straighten it out and make some type of restitution. If you are harboring grudges or failing to reconcile with others, now is the time to clear away all the de-bris. If you have been pushing God off to the side of the road of your life and saying that you really do not have the time for Him, now is the time to get your priorities straight. This Advent which is a gift of the Lord to us, will succeed or fail on the basis of how well we change and clear our lives of sin so that the Lord may come to us. Conversion is a choice, to turn away from sin and to embrace the Savior. In today’s Gospel there is a huge contrast between those who chose poorly and those who chose well. The Gos-pel lists seven political and religious figures: Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate, Herod, his brother Philip, Lysanius, Annas and Caiphas. On the other side stands one, John the Baptist. Of those named, he was the only one who chose Jesus. Before John preached the Gospel of repent-ance to others, he went out into the desert, fasted on locust and wild honey and lived a life of penance. In today’s terms, before he preached, he practiced what he preached. The Lord is calling us to do the same thing. This week we light the second candle of our Advent wreath. It is a symbol of our waiting for the Word to become Flesh. We hear about Jesus, the Word of God from scripture. This se-cond candle is sometimes called the Bethlehem candle and should remind us of love.

VOCATIONS

Could God be calling you to be a priest, deacon, brother or sister in order to help our world of today to truly “prepare the way of the Lord”? If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Fr. Walter Szczesny at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the month” stories on our website - www.buffalovocations.org!

PLEASE PRAY FOR

STEWARDSHIP

And for our deceased:

Today is the Second Sunday of Advent. Today we meet St. John the Baptist - who tells us to prepare the way of the Lord. Yesterday we celebrated the great American Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Our country is placed under the protection of The Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary and John the Baptist are the two great characters of Advent. They help us all to get ready for Christmas. They are both people of Prayer, Joy, Peace and Patience. Advent is a time for prayer. The lighting of the Advent wreath reminds us we are waiting for the light of Jesus - The sun and Son of God. Daily Mass is a great way to pray. Advent is a time for joy. Jesus first, others second and ourselves last. True joy comes in being a disciple of Jesus. Advent is a time of peace - We need to make up for our sins. We have hurt others - yet we still have great love and compassion. Advent is a time for patience. We all wait for Jesus. When we come to Mass - we listen to the readings and say thank you to Jesus before we receive Holy Commun-ion. We are patient until we receive Him and then we take Him home. Most of all Advent is a time of Love. We love God. All our thoughts are centered on the Holy Trinity - and we love our neighbors, our friends, our family and even our enemies. As we shop, write cards, decorate, party and prepare - we do all out of Love. Love conquers death and evil. Continue to celebrate Advent. God bless you and your family. Love & Prayers,

Our students are great. Really. Must be they come from some mighty fine families. They never cease to impress us with their insights, enthusiasm, joy

in living, compassion, and yes—their faith. On Nov. 19th, our 6th and 7th grade students gathered in our parish hall to listen to (and they are good & respectful listeners) five speakers from local agencies that help children. Our guest speakers were representatives from: Child and Family Ser-vices, Vive La Casa, the Buffalo News Neediest Fund, the U.S. Marines (Toys for Tots), and 211 WNY Olmstead Center for Sight. The presentation was entitled “All I Want for Christmas”. Our students learned about the large amount of children and youth in our Western New York Community that have families that are facing lean, difficult, and challenging times, often regarding finances. It is our belief that many of our young folks present that evening left with a renewed perspective of gratitude. They just might be a little less inclined to whine or complain about what they don’t have. If we really want to start drawing compari-sons with other people about how we are faring in life, we soon realize how blessed all of us really are. We are all very grateful to our presenters for helping us open our eyes a little more. As a follow up, a few teachers asked our stu-dents what they were thankful for. A common answer from our students was life...for life itself! Not bad eh? How many of us would answer likewise? Last night, one of our 1st grade teachers shared with me each one of her students’ “thank you cards” to Jesus. There were 19 students who wrote cards. One student thanked Jesus for toys. Every other student thanked Jesus for any combination of the following: *family (moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, & cousins) *friends *food *Jesus himself That was it. That is what all of them are thankful for. Look at that list again. Pretty good for 1st graders, eh? As our teachers consistently say, we surely can learn lots from our children. We thank them for helping us understand what is really important.

Calling all 6th & 7th graders: including our students in Home-schooling and Catholic schools: we invite and en-courage all of you to come to our parish hall for the upcom-ing class presentations by Tom Iwankow: 7th grade...this Monday, Dec. 10th: Peer Pressure and Being Catholic...7-8 pm 6th grade...next Monday, Dec. 17th: The New Testament Future...7-8 pm

3rd grade families, and any other families with children who will be making their First Holy Communions in May: If you have not yet picked up your packets to help prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist, please do so by stopping into our office during office hours or class-times. Also, we are now asking each family to choose a Mass in May for this blessed occasion.

Some of our elementary grade students made Thanksgiv-ing cards for local residents in nursing homes, and for our troops overseas. They were heartfelt, creative, and beauti-ful. There they go again...caring...helping...givingF loving.

GIVING TREE

St. Gabriel’s Parish will again have our annual Giving Tree. This event has been helpful to so many over the past years. You have made Christmas a happy and joyful experience for young children all the way up to the very aged. The individuals you help have been those who have experienced poor health situations, multiple hospitalizations and surgeries. Very many are in bad economic straights. Please pick an ornament off the tree, purchase the gift asked for, wrap it and tape the ornament to the gift. Bring it back to Church on the weekend of December 15th /16th. You will find many ornaments asking for gift cards. PLEASE, take these. These are the ones always left behind. The gift certificates to Wegmans. Tops, Kmart, Target and Walmart are very necessary. Even though a person may receive food stamps, they cannot buy any paper products—toilet paper, tissues or paper towels. Nor can they buy any cleaning products—laundry soaps, dish soap, bath soaps or shampoos or any cleaning products for the bathroom or kitchen. Personal clothing items are necessities better purchased by the individual. Often a parent needs to look at the article of clothing to make sure it will fit properly. After all, every child wants a gift from Santa that he or she can wear and not have to wait for the opportunity to go back to the store and wait for something that will fit. Please include the amount and receipts for the gift cards. That would be extremely helpful to us so we won’t have to call on each card to find out the amount. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

CYO NEWS

We will start rehearsing for our 3rd Annual Living Nativity. All 7th - 12th graders are welcome to participate.

We need singers, Wiseman, Sheppard's, etc. Rehearsal will be held at MNO on December 10, 2012 We hope to see everyone there!!!!

Christmas Pageant

Christmas is for children.

Every year we have a Christmas pageant at the 4PM Mass on Christmas Eve. If your child would like to be a shepherd, angel or king or even Mary or Joseph, please come to our one rehearsal.

Children of all ages are welcome. We will have a draw-ing for Mary and Joseph but any child can be a shepherd, king or angel. Costumes are optional.

I need a few parents to help me to organize the children on Christmas Eve. If you can help, please come to the practice.

Watch the bulletin for time and date of the rehearsal.

SHARING THE GOSPEL

Have you ever played a game where you asked for a "do-over" so you could try again? When John told his neighbors to be baptized, he wanted them to have a second chance, A "do-over." He wanted to give them a fresh, clean start with God. Prayer Dear God, when I find myself doing or saying things that you would not like, help me to stop and start over. Something to Draw Draw John washing someone in a river. Mission for the Week When you catch yourself being selfish, not following directions, or using hurtful words, stop. Say you're sorry, ask for forgiveness, and then try again.
