Welcome to the December issue of the Carryduff Focus
Yay! It’s nearly Christmas! I love this time of year and I can fully understand how our pagan ancestors had a celebration around the Winter Solstice. We need something to look forward to when the days are so dark and short.
One thing I feel strongly about, especially at this time of year, is supporting our local businesses. I urge you to please ‘shop local’. There are so many small local businesses struggling in the current recession - your custom can make a big difference. The big multi nationals will do very nicely thank you. But, if we want our local shops to conveniently stay open, we need to support them. So, if you can do some of your festive shopping in our local community, I’m sure the local retailers will appreciate it.
You may remember in the October issue it was mentioned that Lough Moss Centre have been celebrating their 20th anniversary. I’ve a great article on pages 44 & 45 written by the centre manager Ron McKnight, charting the changes over the last 20 years. Anyone who’s lived here all that time (yes, me too) will find it fascinating.
If you have a look at the centre pages in this issue, you’ll see some special Christmas messages from some local businesses direct to you! And a little one from me as well. I’d like to include a heartfelt thank you to all of you who’ve told me how much you look forward to the next issue arriving - it really does make all the hard work worthwhile.
Have a great December and Merry Christmas.
Deirdre
Deadline for the January issue is Monday 10th December

Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Argo 15, (120 mins) If anyone has ridden the highs and lows of that which Tinseltown has to offer, it’s Ben Affleck. From the peak of Good Will Hunting (for which he won an Oscar) to the embarrassing trough of Surviving Christmas, Affleck has struggled to find his niche. The tide may be turning however, as Affleck has more recently put his hand to directing. His critically acclaimed Gone Baby Gone in 2007 officially resurrected his career. Argo is his third attempt at making a motion picture in this vein. Taking a tough (albeit true) story of six US Embassy workers who seek refuge with the Canadians in post-revolution Iran in the late ’70’s, Affleck deftly weaves political turmoil with the CIA’s ludicrous plan to get them out. Said plan is for them to pretend to be the crew of a movie named ‘Argo’, for which they are researching shooting locations in Tehran. In the words of Bryan Cranston’s character, it was ‘the best bad idea we have’! Affleck’s character Tony Mendez may be the hero, but he is a difficult character to portray; his dishevelled, Bohemian attitude towards life is difficult to reconcile with his being a sharp, agile spy but Affleck gives him a depth to which the audience can slowly warm. Cranston’s Jack O’Donnell is the CIA’s head honcho who provides surprising gravitas (when compared to his role in Malcolm in the Middle). Lester Siegel and John Chambers (played by Alan Arkin and John Goodman respectively) provide the Hollywood inside track, providing witty, self-deprecating humour, which acts as thoroughly welcome comic relief. Never, however, is the critical tension completely forgotten, meaning we can laugh at Hollywood’s foibles without feeling too guilty about the fates of those trapped in Iran. The climax is skilfully handled and is difficult for the audience to judge if it will end happily or otherwise. The strain created here is the finest weapon in Affleck’s directorial arsenal, we await his next movie with bated breath. 4 / 5
On DVD: The Amazing Spider-man 12A (136 mins) In 2005, Christopher Nolan’s reboot of the Batman movie franchise opened to rave reviews, proving that an overhaul of a movie franchise (that had been dead in the water since 1997) could be done and done exceptionally well. So, is The Amazing Spider- Man different enough to feel like it is more than just Spider-Man 4 while keeping the same feel as Spidey’s previous outings? It is this tentative dichotomy that director Marc Webb (apt, I know) struggles to deal with. On one hand, new elements such as Peter’s (Andrew Garfield) search for his parents’ story and his romance with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) are expanded in ways Sam Raimi (director of the previous Spider-Man trilogy) almost completely ignored. On the other, the plot is almost identical to the first film, way back in 2002; the Lizard even hears schizophrenic, detached voices, just like Green Goblin. Acting-wise, it’s a mix-bag. Garfield proves himself a worthy successor to Tobey Maguire in the title role, and Stone’s Gwen is contrarily different to Kirsten Dunst’s Mary-Jane Watson; she is an active, driven, 21st Century woman, not merely a damsel in distress and Stone is enchanting and subtle enough to keep our interest. Rhys Ifans’s (Notting Hill) as villainous Dr. Curt Connors lacks the charismatic menace of Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osbourn and the plot suffers for it. All in all the final result is mediocre; neither extremely good nor bad. But when a rebooted movie franchise produces such an average film, we must ask: was it worth it? 2 / 5

LOUGH MOSS LEISURE CENTRE IS CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF FITNESS AND FUN!! By Ron McKnight
THE EARLY YEARS When Lough Moss Leisure Centre opened its doors in October 1992 with a small, dedicated staff and limited facilities, no one could have imagined that in 20 years the popularity and diversity of this little Centre would have multiplied so greatly.
The Centre contained a large sports hall, small gym, two squash courts, and a few multi-functional rooms. Month by month word spread, with more and more activities and facilities being requested by eager customers and the management and staff were happy to oblige! The programme grew to include 5 a side, basketball, badminton, aerobic and fitness classes, a crèche, martial arts, short mat bowling, arts and crafts, kid clubs, Summer Schemes, Birthday Party packages and many more. Alongside the Centre’s development partnerships were forming with many local schools including Lagan College, and the former Castlereagh College of Further Education, who we are delighted to say are both still very regular users of the Centre.
As the years flew by, new and exciting additions were made to the Centre such as an all-weather Astro Pitch, which, in conjunction with Annadale Hockey Club, led us into yet another direction. This new pitch is used for hockey training and matches, football, and most recently, tennis! The Fitness Suite was upgraded and we welcomed Eze Fitness into the Lough Moss family. Combining a wide range of membership packages, fitness classes along with the expertise and advice of highly qualified staff the gym has gone from strength to strength and continues to grow and develop. After a tireless campaign by the Carryduff Community the Children’s Play Park funded through the Big Lottery Peoples’ Millions in conjunction with UTV was next to arrive and what a success it has been! Used by literally thousands of children since it opened, it has proved to be an invaluable addition.
THE PRESENT With high quality service and fantastic facilities as our top priorities, the Astro Pitch, main sports hall floor and squash courts have recently been upgraded. The newest additions to the Centre are the Castlereagh Safe and Well (C-

SAW) project, funded by The Big Lottery, and the Active Communities Project, funded by Sport NI. C-SAW promotes health and well-being in the local community. They provide many courses and classes for local people including Cook It, Baby Massage, Armchair Aerobics, First Aid, Home Safety Workshops and many more. Active Communities is a project which seeks to employ, deploy and train a network of coaches and leaders to deliver activities in community and club settings. These include Basketball, Rugby, Gaelic, Disability Sports, Women and Girls, Multi Skills for Sport and Over 50’s. These two new departments are based within the Centre alongside the vast number of other facilities.
With the emphasis on providing a first class facility, in 2009, the Council demonstrated its commitment to providing a sustainable future to the residents of the Borough with the installation of a Wind Turbine. This environmentally friendly project was funded by the Council and the Department of Finance and Personnel.
THE FUTURE Lough Moss Leisure Centre will continue to grow and develop to serve the community for the next 20 years and beyond!!! We would like to take this opportunity to say a big “thank you” to all our customers and we look forward to your continued custom. And finally, none of this could be accomplished without the hard work of the staff who strive for the continued success of Lough Moss Leisure Centre. They say ”you are only as good as the staff you have around you” and the Lough Moss staff will endeavor to promote a welcoming, friendly and helpful service for all customers and visitors to Carryduff in the future.
So here’s to Lough Moss and whatever the future holds!!!!!

St Ita’s Primary School The ‘Moos on the Mall’ is an exciting schools and community art project from Forestside Shopping Centre.
St. Ita’s has been chosen as one of three schools to take part in this ongoing project. The project involves life size models of a cow and a calf. The project’s first theme was ‘Spooky Moos’. Mrs Malone’s P1 boys and girls painted the calf and P6 pupils painted the cow in spooky Halloween themes.
The finished models were then mooo-ved to Forestside Mall to graze alongside the Moos from other schools. The public were asked to vote for their favourites by making a small donation in their chosen Mini-Moos’ collecting box. All funds went to Barnados NI. The Moos will now be returned to their original plain white colour in preparation for the spring theme. Everyone in St. Ita’s is very much looking forward to that next challenge and can’t wait to add to the beautiful artwork already on display in the entrance adjacent to Marks and Spencer.

The Moos will now be returned to their original plain white colour in preparation for the spring theme. Everyone in St. Ita’s is very much looking forward to that next challenge and can’t wait to add to the beautiful artwork already on display in the entrance adjacent to Marks and Spencer.

Congratulations to Jamie Cunningham in P4 who was Runner-up in the Anti-bullying Poster Competition organised by the Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum. Well done on such a great achievement Jamie! Congratulations also to our P7 class who were awarded a special class prize for the innovative entries they submitted to the competition. Our P5 class launched Anti-bullying week with an Assembly. The Assembly explained to the children the different types of bullying, how it feels to be bullied and what the children can do if they think they are being bullied. Well done to P5 for producing a very powerful Assembly.
Thank you to the Parents Council for organising a Halloween disco, for both current and past pupils. There were many fabulous costumes and all had a wonderful time. The P6 class had a Pumpkin carving competition. The classroom looked spectacular with so many pumpkins glowing in the dark. There was even a Pumpkin decorated in the Millennium colours of blue and yellow.
Many thanks also to teachers Mrs Magee and Mrs Bourne for organising a Dance-a-thon for Children In Need. The boys and girls all joined in, especially for Gangnam Style!!! They had a fabulous time and were able to raise much need funds.

Helen Long
In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff
They’re ok outside, skulking in corners in the shed or the garage. But, come the colder nights, and they want a bit of warmth; you could say they want to partake of our indoor home comforts. The irony being, that’s exactly what makes a lot of us feel much less comfortable. Of course, I’m talking about spiders and the widespread fear of them. During one 24-hour period in early September, I encountered three large house-spiders in my home; or was it the
same one, stalking me? My last sighting was of it scurrying under my bed: the stuff of nightmares for some people, but I slept soundly!
I feel I am waging a one-woman campaign in defence of these harmless beasties. Yes, native spiders are totally harmless to humans, so what’s to be afraid of?
Well, I think it’s mostly their appearance, coupled with the creepy way they move, that has so many people spooked!!
But that’s no excuse for killing them. If you find one in the bath, it can be easily gathered up in a towel and deposited outside. Think of all the good that they do for us, in their
perpetual war on flies. I dread to think what a real 21st century plague of flies we would have, without them. And they
employ so many different tactics to catch their victims! They are magicians at weaving their webs, which in themselves are veritable works of art. Who has seen them, glistening in the early morning dew of autumn, and not marvelled? Works of art, and yet so effective, too. The spiders are nimble workers: once a fly has been trapped, the web-owner first deals it a paralysing bite, before cocooning it in silk, to await consumption later. Large house-spiders are probably the dullest, but many of those found in our gardens are beautifully marked, if we only look a little closer. Take the garden spider, for instance, or ARANAEUS DIADEMATA, to use its beautiful official name.
They can vary in both size and colouring, but most of them sport handsome stripes, like the one pictured above, camped in its orb web, between my two bins:
My favourite, however, has to be the zebra spider, a type of jumping version with truly amazing eyes. More about it another time, when the focus will be fully on it!
