BYGONE DAYS
This winter photograph from the 1950’s shows a snow cov-
ered Medlock Hall farm, then owned by Fred Roper and
now a private house with its immediate area taken
over by Daisy Nook Garden Centre. The farm looked like
this until the 1960’s and yet could have come out of a
Thomas Hardy novel in appearance.
The snow on the rather dilapidated outbuildings gives a
nice Christmas air.

Hot Mulled Wine Ingredients
2 Oranges 2 Bottles Red Wine
1 Bottle White Wine 6cm piece Root Ginger, peeled & sliced thinly
3 Cinnamon Sticks 1/2 Tsp. Ground Cloves 5 Tbsp. Demerara Sugar
4 Tbsp. Brandy
Method 1. Use a vegetable peeler to remove the zest from the
orange in strips, leaving the pith behind. 2. Poor the red and white wine into a large pan with
the juice from the oranges. Place the zest, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and sugar with the wine mixture. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
3. Cover and heat on a medium-high heat, until heated through, but don't boil. Reduce heat and to low and heat for an hour to allow the flavours to devel-op. Adjust the sweetness if necessary. Strain and serve hot with a splash of brandy if desired.
