Check you’re getting the best energy deal – If you have stayed for many years on a standard tariff for gas and electricity from one of the big 6 energy suppliers, then you could be paying hundreds of pounds a year more than you need to. Once a year your existing supplier will now tell you whether you could switch to a better tariff – you could save around £100 a year just by switching to direct debit from cash or check payment. However, you should check other suppliers too - visit the Ofgem website www.goenergyshopping.co.uk If you use oil for heating, you may be able to find a cheaper supplier at www.oilsave.org.uk You could also save up to 10% by joining an oil buying club – further information is available in the Oil Club sec-tion of the Citizens Advice website www.adviceguide.org.uk Save energy - An energy efficiency retrofit of the house – including insulating cavity walls, topping up loft insulation, installing double glazing and upgrad-ing a boiler – could save you up to £320 on your annual energy bills according to the Energy Saving Trust. Speak to your energy supplier (or an officially accredited contractor) about whether you can get free or discounted insulation, a grant or a loan. You could also save energy if you: - Time your heating to go off 30 minutes before you leave home - Reduce your hot tank thermostat (if you have one) to 60 deg C or 140 deg F - Turn your living room thermostat down to 21 deg C if it’s currently higher - Fit radiator thermostats in other rooms - Draught-proof windows and doors and close curtains at night - Switch off lights when you leave a room - Don’t leave appliances on standby or charge unnecessarily - Wash full loads in your dishwasher and washing machine - Only boil as much water as you need - Dry your clothes outside in fine weather - Make sure hot taps aren’t dripping - Invest in LED lighting - Fit an eco-showerhead. An energy monitor could be useful to check which appliances in your home might be using lots of energy. Some energy suppliers already offer these and they will be available free to everyone when the full scale rollout of smart meters gets under way in late 2015. The Energy Saving Trust provides an online Home Energy Check at hec.est.org.uk Warm Homes Discount – If you are receiving
pension credit you may be entitled to a £140 dis-count off your electricity bill if you are with one of the big 6 suppliers. This also applies to some low income families. Contact your supplier to check. If you’re struggling to pay the bills – You risk being cut off, so contact your supplier straight away. If you need help in agreeing a payment plan, please contact us at the CAB. We may also be able to check whether you are entitled to some of the billions of pounds in benefits which go unclaimed each year.
Are you spending too much on energy?
The CAB needs help
The CAB is a charity funded entirely by grants and donations. To help raise money we are organising a charity golf day for local business people at the exclusive Swinley Forest Golf Club on 23rd April 2015. We need prizes we can auction at the time – perhaps a weekend in a holiday cottage? a voucher or tickets for a prestigious event or activity? time with an expert sportsperson/artist? We also need a small number of businesses to sponsor the event. If you might be able to help – or have some ideas - please contact Trevor Williams on 0127629936 or 07802 368125 or at [email protected]
