From the Office of the Principal, Mr. C. McInnis….

As the holiday season fast approaches, take time for what is

important in your life, family and friends. Don’t forget to tell

your children the important messages, “ I love you” and “I’m

here for you”. Take time everyday to read to your children

and ask them about what they are learning in Math as well.

Your interest is a great way to consolidate learning.

The students are getting ready for the Holiday Concert that

will be held on Tuesday, December 19th at our school @ 2:00

pm & 7:00 pm.

Hot Lunch at Winger

Pizza days at Winger are Fridays. One Dollar per slice. This month piz-

za days are Friday December 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd.

NO Hot Lunch Lady for the month of December.

Breakfast Club

Winger School volunteers are hard at work serving our students with a nutritious breakfast on

Tuesday and Thursday mornings as they arrive to school. Thank you to Niagara Nutrition Part-

ners for supporting this well appreciated meal for all our students. Thank you also goes to the

many volunteers that help us out every Tuesday and Thursday. We appreciate all

the extras you do for our students. A huge thank you to Mrs. Matthews and Mr. Or-

mel who plan these nutritious breakfasts and do go out of their way on their own

time to pick up supplies. Also, thank you to Mapleview Charities for $300.00 dona-

tion to our Breakfast Club… Thank you!!

12 DAYS OF GIVING AND 12 DAYS OF GIVING

To coincide with the 12 days of Christmas festivities, we are going to have a 12

Days of Giving Food and Clothing Drive to benefit the Wainfleet Firefighters

Food Drive. Due to the timing of pick-up of the items, we will be “doubling up”

on some days. Please see the list on the back of the school calendar . Thank

you in advance for all your generous donations of food and other items and

thank you for making someone’s Christmas a little brighter . . . .

Poinsettia sales are now finished at Winger School. Thank

If you're able to help with scribing for mid- year EQAO assessments,

please contact the office. We are looking for parents (and grandpar-

SAVE THE DATE!

Tuesday December 19th will be our Holiday Concert “The Holly Jolly Juke-

box”. Students are hard at work practicing songs for this whole school mu-

sical performance. We have a matinee show at 2:00 pm in the afternoon

and the evening show begins at 7:00 pm. Students will need to be in their

homerooms on show night for 6:45 pm. Parent council will be running a

basket draw. Each classroom will donate a fun basket of

goodies for some lucky winners. Please support our parent

council that does so much to support our students and buy

tickets on our baskets on concert night and be prepared for

a fun night filled with great music.

Winger School Trip to see “The Little Mermaid”

at Scotia Bank Centre, Niagara Falls

Thursday December 14th, 9:25 am - 1:30 pm

Linus Hand Productions presents “The Little Mermaid” based on one of Hans

Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated Walt Dis-

ney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With

music by eight time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard

Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fa-

ble will capture your heart with its irresistible songs. Disney’s the Little Mer-

maid offers fantastic creative opportunity for rich costumes and sets, as well as

the chance to perform some of the best known songs from the past 30 years.

This school wide trip is paid for from the Carol Leppert Music Endowment.

Winger School Cookie Dough All orders have been processed and cookie dough will be delivered December 19th,(Christmas Concert Day) just in time for the holiday season. Please ar-range for pick up on this day, after 12 noon. If for some reason you are unable to pick up on this day, please notify the office.

Niagara Student Transportation System Would you like to know if your child’s bus is running late, or whether it will be delayed. You can sign up for automatic emails on nsts.ca and click on “delays & cancellations”, enter an email and password. Once set up you will need your childs OEN#, which can be found on a report card. Should you have any questions or need help to set up please call the school and we can help you through it.

We really built on our skills and enjoyed working together as a

team to learn the game! Good work to Keralen, Sheridan, Violet,

Marisa, Ryle, Sarah, Kayla, Abby, Marissa, Sierra and Reed! You

should be proud of your season!

GRADE 4 CLASSROOM NEWS

The grade 4 classroom is a busy place! We have been hard at work in literacy working

with words and learning spelling patterns for long and short vowels, vowel combinations

and consonant blends at the beginning and end of words. Students sort their words by

sound patterns every Monday and then are tested on Fridays. Congratulations to all stu-

dents on wonderful improvements. In reading, we have just finished the Novel, “The

Best Halloween Ever” by Barbara Robinson. Students wrote reading responses and devel-

oped skills in visualizing, questioning, predicting, and connecting in comprehension work

in this unit. We have started a writing project focusing on using a four square organizer

to construct a detailed paragraph. Students participated in a “shared writing” experience

to design a creature called the “Flicker Flocker” and they are now creating their own

unique creatures and writing a paragraph about their creature and its habitat. We look

forward to displaying these when they are complete.

In math we have completed work on geometry and have begun investigations in linear

measurement. Students have used standard units and non-standard units to estimate,

measure and record the lengths of various items both in and outside of our classroom.

We are working on the concept of perimeter and are using several tools and new math

manipulatives to construct models for measurement. This is an eager bunch of mathe-

maticians! Keep up the good work with dreambox, reviewing subtraction with regroup-

ing and learning basic times and division tables to 10 X 10 as often as you can at home.

We are looking forward to all of the fun activities that await in December and wish every-

one a wonderful holiday season!

From Mr. Sacco’s Grade 7 Class

In Mathematics, the grade 7 class is working on Measurement. We are using real life ap-

plications of measurements, and are learning relationships among measurable attributes

by converting metric units of measure and units of area. We will be investigating the area

of trapezoids and composite shapes, as well as using nets and concrete materials to un-

derstand the surface area of right prisms.

In Language, we are writing persuasive pieces to convince our reading audience of our

point of view on a variety of topics. We are also working on our presenting skills, as well

as using evidence and reasoning to “read between the lines” and infer while reading.

In Science, we are moving on to a new unit on Heat in the Environment. We will be as-

sessing the costs and benefits of technologies that reduce heat loss and heat related im-

pacts on the environment, as well as investigating ways in which heat changes substanc-

es.

From Mr. Shoalt’s Grade 5/6 Class

For Literacy, to begin December, the Grade 5/6 class will be finishing their persuasive writing topics. The students have chosen a topic of importance to them and have been working hard to write a convincing argument with supporting details. This will also demonstrate their editing and proof-reading skills. Once finished, the students will begin to look critically at certain aspects of the media, including the intended purpose and audience of advertisements.

In Math, the Grade 5/6 class is in the midst of their unit on measurement. They have

been determining the relationship among different units, including selecting the most

appropriate unit for measuring, and converting between different units. Each day, the

students demonstrate their estimation skills with various challenges, including esti-

mating distances on maps, objects in the classroom and dimensions of Winger School.

Students will then work towards an understanding of the area of different shapes. After

the measurement unit, the Grade 5/6 class will begin their unit on number sense and

numeration

From Mrs. Robinson’s Grade 7/8 Class

Students in Mrs. Robinson's Grade 7/8 class have been busy over the last few months. We

have had 2 visits from Scientists in the Schools - Adventures in The Bone Zone and Engi-

neering Challenges. During these visits, students had the opportunity to dissect owl pellets

and build structures to withstand various loads. It was great, hands-on learning!

English Update

Students have been working on a number of skills in English, including writing personal

memoirs, creating slideshows after researching a specific Dance genre and reading with a

specific purpose. Our current unit of study is reading and writing narratives. The Grade 7s

will be focusing on Historical Fiction and the Grade 8s will be looking at Science Fiction and

Realistic Fiction. We started the unit by discovering the form of each type of narrative. We

will eventually publish these stories and create covers for them.

Math Update

Students have just completed their Number Sense and Numeration unit. This was an over-

all glimpse at some of the important building blocks for Grade 7 & 8 Number Sense. Many

of the concepts build upon skills learned in previous years. The big focus this unit was on

“real life math,” with one activity being students having a budget and using the app, “Flipp”

to comparison shop for a week’s worth of groceries! We have some savvy shoppers!!! Our

next unit of study will be Geometry. We have had some

great opportunuties to use some of the new math manipu-

latives provided to us by the school and school board. One

of our favourites was the "GIant Tangram" pieces we used

to solve tangram puzzles.
