Q: Why do we make the sign of the cross with the right hand instead of the left? A: The sign of the cross is an ancient gesture within our Catholic Tradition that reminds us of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), of Christ’s passion and death, and of the forgiveness of sins. It is a prayer of itself, asking that God be present to us. In the West we use an open hand and touch the forehead, stomach, left shoulder then right shoulder while saying, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” The Eastern Catholic tradition joins their thumb, index, and middle finger when signing themselves as a reminder of the Trinity. The other 2 fingers are pressed in the palm as a reminder of the 2 natures in Christ (divine and human). As to why the right hand is used, this could be related to passages in Scripture where the right side is mentioned. A few weeks ago we heard the passage about Jesus separating the sheep, the righteous ones, from the goats, the unrighteous: “he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left” (Mt. 25:32). Also, we hear about Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father (Mk.16:19). The right side is associated with righteousness and blessings. (email questions [email protected]).

RCIA – The Period of the Catechumen Please help us welcome the inquirers who participated in the Rite of Acceptance & Welcoming into the order of Catechumens at the 9:30 Mass on Oct. 26. This Rite is of the utmost importance. Assembling publicly for the first time, the candidates who have completed the period of the pre-catechumen and declare their intention to the Church and the Church in turn, carrying out its apostolic mission, accepts them as persons who intend to become its members. God showers his grace on the candidates, since the celebration manifests their desire publicly and marks their reception and first consecration by the Church. Please welcome: Phil Trice, Deb Trice, Adam Cornell, Crystal Cornell, Maggie Cramsey, Brian Puskar and Justin Wilson. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue their journey of faith. Inquiry sessions continue to meet. Won’t you join us for an inquiry session? For more information please call the Parish Office or Jim at 447-2939.

Marriage Moment— As the year comes to a close, many people review its ups and downs. Share the happiest and saddest time for each of you this past year. Is there anything you want to change to love each other better next year?

Parenting Pointer—It's a couple days after Christmas. Perhaps the house is a mess - but hopefully it's a happy mess. Presumably your child has gotten some nice gifts. Take time to enjoy them together this weekend. Play some games. Rejoice in each other's company. Relax.

Solemn Evening Prayer Our seminarians know that they have a lot of support in their journey of priestly discernment and preparation, but I need your help to show them your actual faces and hearts in person! Will you help me? On Tuesday, December 30th from 7:00-7:30pm in Lafayette at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception you can join Bishop Doherty, the seminarians and me for the celebration of Solemn Evening Prayer. As part of this celebration, Bishop Doherty will formally institute James Baxter, Cole Daily, John Nguyen and Coady Owens in the Ministry of Acolyte, as well as Christian DeCarlo and Jonathan Matthes in the Ministry of Lector. As they experience these ministries they continue to approach the full ministry of the priesthood by proclaiming God's Sacred Word and assisting in more formal ways at the altar in various celebrations of the Eucharist. This Institution is a simple Rite, but it brings them ever closer to being fully conformed to Jesus the Head, Shepherd and Spouse of the Body of Christ! Will you help me show them your support by joining us in prayer at 7:00pm on December 30th at the Cathedral? I am thankful for your many ways of supporting our local culture of vocations! I also pray that you experience a renewal of Grace during the coming season of Advent! —Fr. David Hasser, Office for Vocations
