Pope Francis blesses a man, suffering from neurofibromatosis, in Saint Peter's Square

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has shown us the spirit of Christ, a spirit of tenderness, a true Christmas spirit.

We live in a world of image-conscious leaders, hair primped, faces artfully powdered, self absorbed glam-our. Pope Francis is witnessing by his humble example how tired, unconvincing and alienating these egocentric attitudes have become.

Pope Francis has witnessed to the Catholic Church’s call to be truly Christ-like. This image of the pope kissing and praying with a man severely disfigured by illness is truly touching. The man, attending the pope’s general audience in the Vatican, is suffering from neurofibroma-tosis. As his patron, Saint Francis, our Holy Father has shown us the humility and charity of Christ by embracing a man visibly sick and visually and radically different from those around him. Saint Francis of Assisi was a master of simple, powerful popular gestures: he invented the Christmas crib and reputedly preached a sermon to the birds and tamed a wolf.

Disease, in the world of Saint Francis, was mysterious and terrifying. There was no effective medicine. The sufferings of Job were a reality for all those infected by illnesses no one understood. Few illnesses today can in-

spire the deep sense of awe that once attended leprosy and plague: so it is harder to inspire saintliness, kissing the boils of the sick. Pope Francis has found a face so unusual and estranged from the normal that as he touches and prays with its possessor he seems to reenact the spirit of Saint Francis himself.

Love and humility really are Christian ideals, and for someone in the Pope's position of power to so graphically express them is full of Christmas inspiration for all of us. Be like Christ: identify with the outcast. This pope's idealism is so clearly visible in his actions. Our Holy Fa-ther is a living symbol of the Christmas Spirit. By identifying with this man he is making the Church itself grow more human.

United in spirit with Mary and Joseph on the road to Bethlehem, we taste the sweetness which comes to us from the angelic hymn announcing the heavenly peace which is offered to all men and women of good will. The road to Bethlehem truly marks the path for the right ap-proach to that heavenly peace which is on the lips and in the hearts of all. "Exult in the Lord, dear people; lift up your hearts in spiritual joy, for the day of redemption is being renewed, the day of age-long expectation, of the announcement of the happiness that has no end."

We hear an unending invitation, then, to hasten our steps along the road to Bethlehem, a road of peace and charity. Let us rejoice indeed, with Mary and Joseph, in the sure knowledge of our path and have no fear of the possibility of going astray.

Our task, like the task of John the Baptist, our patron, calls us to “Prepare the way of the Lord!” (Mark1:3)

May the peace of Christ, the abundant and enlightening peace of Christmas, be our delight and bring us Christmas blessings.

No había ningún medicina eficaz.
