Roxy Cinema

Roxy cinema, or ‘The Roxy’ as it became known, first opened its doors

on 20th December 1937. The feature film that week was ‘Fire over

England’ starring Flora Robson as Queen Elizabeth. The Roxy was a

very classy place and could accommodate 1,400 people, it even had a

large function room that catered for weddings and funeral parties.

The Manager was notorious for expecting good behaviour and was

quite a stern character. A night out at The Roxy was one to look

forward to. The second showing was always the favourite and a large

queue would form early to ensure a good seat. The balcony seats were

the best and the most expensive. The Roxy provided a perfect escape

from the daily routine.

Unfortunately The Roxy closed its doors in September 2005 and was

later demolished in February 2007, to the disappointment of many.

June Bug Cocktail

1 Measure Crème de Bananes

1 Measure Malibu

1 Measure Midori

4 Measures Pineapple Juice

1 Measure Lime Juice

Shake and strain into an ice filled glass, enjoy!

Lovely Lorna’s Perfect

Pavlova

Ingredients

4 Egg Whites

8oz/250g Caster Sugar

1 Tbsp. Cornflour

2 Tsp. Vinegar

1/2 Tsp. Vanilla Essence

1. Whisk egg whites until stiff, gradually add in sugar 1 tbsp. at a

time, whisking in between to keep eggs stiff.

2. Whisk in all the other ingredients.

3. Pile meringue on a baking sheet lined with foil.

4. Bake at 150C/Gas Mark 2 for 1 1/2 hours.

5. Leave to cool, remove from foil.

6. Whip cream, assemble cream and fruit on top of the meringue.
