    Sharing of Experiences have always been given a thrust in ACMAs

    activities, following the practice, ACMA (ER) organised a CEOs

    delegation to Northern Region Companies. The visit was to 3-ACMA

    member companies in Ghaziabad, viz., Abilities India Pistons & Rings Ltd.

    Ghaziabad Precision Products Pvt. Ltd & Hero Motors Ltd. The delegation

    was led by Mr. Sanjay Sabherwal, Dy. Chairman, ACMA (ER).

    The excerpts from the visit to these companies are given below :

    Abilities India Pistons & Rings Ltd. (AIP)

    AIP manufactures Pistons, Piston Rings and Machinedcomponents.

    Target is to achieve 3 mln pistons & Rs. 40 crores this year.

    A very good example of Kaizens shown on the shop floor.

They also supplyto European two wheeler Manufacturers and Tier I- BRP Rotax GmbH &Co. KG, Austria.

    The unit at Ghaziabad which the Mission members visited has 2 verticals,viz., Transmission & Stampings. The company supplies transmissions for

    ATVs and motorcycles to BRP Rotax. Further, the company has gotexclusive contract for manufacturing of gears for supplies to high-endmotorcycles and ATVs. Hero motors has recently set up a new state-of-the-art gear plant with heat treatment facility to strengthen E&T vertical.

    Total turnover of the unit visited Rs. 250 Cr.

    Has a 3 year Strategy Plan : to increase to Rs. 450 500 Cr. in 2years essentially in transmissions

    Magna is their Technology partner for Transmissions fromconception of product to Business Development

    Working on a new Gearbox design which will come in another 2years. The gearbox assembly is done in-house.

    Hero Motors follow a Step-by-step - Multiple Mountain Theorywhich enables them to take a small test project in the first yearfollowed by a more Challenging ramp-up project in the next 3 4years.

    The Company supplies sheet metal components to its group leading

    company, Hero Honda Motors Ltd.

    Ferrous Casting Unit, Manesar: Hero Motors has formed a joint venturewith Sumitomo Kiriu Corporation, Japan for manufacturing of automotivecomponents mainly brake discs, brake drums and steering knuckles toform Munjal Kiriu Industries Pvt. Ltd.. which is ISO TS 16949 Certified.The facility has been commissioned at Manesar, 60km from Delhi and isequipped with state-of-art foundry having Disamatic moulding line.

    People ProcessesDecember 18, 2010: Jamshedpur

    The National Committee of HR along with ACMA(ER) organised a one

    day Conference on Performance Excellence through PeopleProcesses. In his opening speech, Mr. Killol Kamani, Chairman,

    ACMA(ER) and MD, Samarth Engineering Co. P. Ltd, said that the currenthuman resource departments, take more responsibilities as they alsodiscuss the strategic planning of a business with top executives. HRmanagers today's lead the way by not only making recommendations, butalso initiate policy changes. A good human resource department not onlyhelps to boost the morale and efficiency of employees, but also restrictsand limits job turnovers as well. The purpose of human resourcedepartments is thus to basically utilize an employee's abilities effectivelyby coaching them to maximize those abilities, while simultaneouslyimproving their working environment so that they are assured jobsatisfaction.

    He then invited Mr. Debabrata Dash heading HR Systems, Processes &

    Intervent ions at Tata Motors Jamshedpur.

    Mr. Dash mentioned a reward programme should encourage a specificbehavior that is measured, tracked and audited. One has to identify thedistinctive potential of the individual and once the benchmark is decidedfor performance, the compensation and reward can be linked to it. It is acycle.

    Mr. S.K. Venkatram , GM, Operations, Sansera Industries P. Ltd. in his

    presentation on Performance Review Process, said that the purpose of

    PRP is to enable organization and individuals success by aligning

    individual objectives with those of the company, creating a continuous

    learning environment, focuses on individual and organizational

    development and enhancing employees perceptions on fairness and

    equity.

    Dr. Jittu Singh, Senior Professor, XLRI, mentioned that the work force is

    also human which needs to be praised, appreciated, recognized and

    rewarded. Motivation is something that needs special attention and any

    senior executive or MD or CEO can by way of interaction motivate the

    employees the best.

    Lastly Mr. Pranotosh Bhattacharjee, Head HR, RSB Transmissions (I)

    Ltd. on Attracting & Retaining Talents, spoke about the talent

    identification, talent acquisition, nurturing of talent, talent attraction and

    retention.

    The topics covered in the conference were, attracting and retaining

    talents, performance measuring process- measuring performance,measuring behavior, compensation and recognition and sustaining high

    performance.

    Mr. Sanjay Sabherwal, Dy. Chairman, ACMA(ER) & MD, Metaldyne

    Industries Ltd., concluded the programme by speaking on the relevance

    of HR as the conference covered topics on entire cycle of the job

    requirements in the organisation.

    & Kaizen

    Jamshedpur: January 25, 2011

    ACMA(ER) organised a half day workshop on

    Muda Identification and Kaizen.Mr. Ranjot Singh, Regional Coordinator,

    ACMA(ER) & MD, Em de t Jamshedpur,introduced the faculty, Mr. T. K. Chanda, ResidentCounsellor, ACT Div. ACMA and said that foreveryone the customer is very important. One hasto produce what is the demand of the customer. Aprocess adds value by producing goods or providing a service that acustomer will pay for. The process consumes resources and waste occurswhen more resources are consumed than are necessary to produce thegoods or provide the service that the customer actually wants. Muda orwasteful activities are a waste and its reduction is an effective way toincrease profitability. He requested the participants to learn everythingthey can and utilize their learning in increasing the productivity and

    profitability.

    Mr. Chanda established the relationship between terms like cost, priceand profit and told the delegates to question the present system, identifythe gaps and wastes and eliminate/ minimize it towards cost reduction. Healso discussed JIT and JODOKA concepts and explained with the help ofvarious slides, innovation verses kaizen. He discussed MUDA, MURI,MURA types of wastes. Another type MIRU was discussed which meansnot only to see problems superficially but to closely observe and nursethem.

    By showing various slides, Mr. Chanda discussed the seven wastes andhow Kaizens can be done to reduce these wastes. He also showed what isan ordinary production, what is a fake flow production and a required flowproduction in a plant. At the end of the programme, Mr. Sanjay Singh,

    Managing Director, Highco Engineers p. Ltd. proposed the vote of thanks.

    The delegates were also shown flow production and various Kaizensdone at the Highco Plant to give a better understanding of the concept.

    Workshop on Safety

    New Delhi: December 3, 2010

    ACMA (Northern Region) for the first time organised a One DayWorkshop on Safety. Mr. Pravin Malhotra, Member, Regional Council ,

    NORTHERN REGION

    ACMA (Northern Region) and Managing Director, Nipman FastenersIndustries Pvt. Ltd. said that thinking out of box is the need of the hour.

    He emphasized that there is tremendous growth in the sector and whenthe production goes up people dont pay attention to safety. He also saidthat companies are building new plant, safety should be given dueimportance. Explaining the Frank Birds Theory of Accident, Mr. Malhotra

    said that 88% accidents are caused by unsafe acts, 10%accidents are caused by unsafe conditions, 2% accidentsare caused by natural calamity, which are not under our

    control. The faculty of the training programme, Mr. ManojMathur while explaining the definition of safety said thatSafety is prevention of accidents which result ineliminating personal injury and property damage.

    The objective of the workshop was to apprise onCategory of Accident; Types of Accident; Unsafe Act &Causes of Unsafe Act; Safety Audits & Checklists; WrongUsage of Hand Tools; Safeguard of Machines; Colourcodes and Safety; Safety Communication; How to EnsureSafety; Benefit of Safety Equipments; Basics ofErgonomics and Occupational Hazards.

    uto News1st SMED Competition

    New Delhi: December 15, 2010

    Considering the positive impact on productivity that a subject of SingleMinute Exchange of Die (SMED) can have in manufacturing units, ACMANorthern Region organized for the first time a Competition on SMED.

    Mr. Rattan Kapur, Chairman, ACMA (N.R.) welcoming the Jury for thecompetition said that SMED is an approach to continuous improvementand refers to QCO (Quick Change Over) which reduces the change overtime to one digit. Mr. Kapur also mentioned that there is a lot of opportunityin India, which brings along growth and challenges, which we need toprepare ourselves for.

    Mr. Kapur highlighted the objective of the competition, which was to helpcompanies witness actual case studies from various companies inorder to reduce their non-value added activities to a large extent.The Winners of the 1st SMED Competition were :

    Dr. Andrew Brown, Jr.

    New Delhi: December 14, 2010

    ACMA (Northern Region) along with Society of India AutomobileManufacturers (SIAM) organized an interaction with Dr. Andrew Brown,Jr., President, SAE International.

    Mr. Rattan Kapur, Chairman, ACMA (Northern Region) while welcomingDr. Brown, Dr. David Schutt, CEO and Mr. Murali M. Iyer of SAEInternational, briefed members on their visit and about Society of

    Automotive Engineers (SAE), which he mentioned was one of the highlyrespected technical bodies across the world.

    Mr. Kapur also said that the automobile industry is changing very fast in

    respect of the technology, design, light weighting and environment norms.

    Both the vehicle manufacturer and auto component ancillaries need to

    upgrade their technologies, skills and work towards greener environment

    said Mr. Kapur.

    Mr. S. Sandilya, Vice President, SIAM & Chairman, Eicher Group gave an

    overview of the Indian Automotive Industry and on the Challenges.

    Mr. Murali of SAE International in his address briefed the participants ofthe activities of SAE India and thanked SIAM and ACMA for their active

    support during the past many years and evinced an interest of further

    strengthening the ties in field of training.

    Dr. Brown Jr., President, SAE International in his presentation on

    Megatrend Analysis & Portfolio Strategy (MAPS) with a focus on HEV /

    EV (Electrical Vehicle) also stressed on increasing Environmental

    Awareness & Regulation for the safe and green future.

    Shop Floor to Top Floor: Information and

    Communication Technologies Workshop

    Gurgaon: December 17, 2010

    The IT Committee of ACMA in association with ACMA Northern Regionand NASSCOM organized a Workshop on Shop Floor to Top Floor Information and Communication Technologies. The workshop includedpresentations from leading IT solution providers on topics such as CloudComputing and sharing of experiences by ACMA member firms, with theobjective of sharing the ideas that could help improve productivity, quality,cost and delivery of operations.

    The programme also included a visit to Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. to facilitatecross learning on how IT is being used by world-class companies tointegrate various processes and manage supply chain.

    Mr. Ravi Machani, Chairman IT Committee, ACMA in his welcomeaddress mentioned that ACMA in its mandate had identified educating

    and enabling its members with user friendly andaffordable IT solutions through a defined roadmap,particularly for the SMEs. The Committee hementioned, towards this had worked closely with a fewmembers of ACMA and various solution providers toaddress the various needs of the auto componentindustry with regard to IT.

    Mr. Anand Ramakrishnan, GM - Cloud ComputingServices, Wipro Infotech shared the benefit ofclouding which resulted in optimizing the budget andstaff output in a company. Mr. Rahul Shandilya- Head

    Global Services Asia Pacific, Tata Technologies made a presentation onthe Solutions for Auto Component Manufacturers. Mr. Abhay Bakre,Joint Development Commissioner, Ministry of MSME, while addressingthe gathering, shared various cluster development schemes of MSME.

    Mr. S. Srinivasan, CIO, Sundram Fasteners Ltd., while making a casestudy presentation on Enabling Operational Excellence for ComponentManufacturing, mentioned that ERP was now being used for FactoryPlanning Across Geographical Boundaries. Mr. Srinivasan also sharedexample of his organization, which was a conglomerate of small andmid-size companies, he mentioned the company was able to deal withOEMs with flexibility while planning its activities with time limits.Highlighting the benefits of using an ERP he said that it gave the companyan edge with integrity of individually oriented real-time information,thereby enabling perfection in costing with instant implementation ofstatutory changes. The advent into ERP also gave company benefits interms of productivity improvement and compression in time andresponse to customers.

    Ludhiana: January 8, 2011

    Based on the overwhelming response and feedback received from theparticipants in the earlier programs held on the subject in 2009 & 2010,

    ACMA (Northern Region) once again organized a one day trainingprogramme on Poka Yoke on 8th January, 2011 at Ludhiana.

    Mr. U.S. Ahuja, Member Regional Committee, ACMA, (NorthernRegion) and Managing Director, New Swan Enterprises welcomed theparticipants and the faculty Mr. Rakesh Gupta for the trainingprogramme.

    Mr. Ahuja said that it was important for all of us to try to minimize theunwanted activities and efforts should be made by every employee to dosmall savings in his or her respective areas.

    In order to sustain the competitive environment, organisations have to

    keep on improving their process and systems to achieve continuous

    improvement said Mr. Ahuja. Mr. Rakesh Gupta explained about Poka

    Yoke and emphasized on creating a Poka Yoke world by implementing its

    techniques. He highlighted the possible root cause for non

    conformance/defects by explaining the 6M factors (Man, Material,

    Machine, Method, Measuring Equipment, Material Handling Equipment).

    He said that POKA YOKE is the Japanese technique started by Dr.Shigeo Shingo to avoid human error at work aimed at achieving Zero

    Defect. This technique is a highly effective way to reduce Mistakes and

    boost Quality and is a device which prevents incorrect parts from being

    made or assembled or easily identifies a flaw or error, he said. Mr. Gupta

    also emphasized to look for Poka Yoke opportunities on a l ine and gave

    some common examples of Poka Yoke.

    Northern Region Launches 4th Batch of Six Sigma

    Green Belt Certification Programme

    New Delhi: January 17-19, 2011 & March 7-8, 2011

    The 4th batch of the 5-day Certification Programme on Six Sigma GreenBelt was launched by ACMA (Northern Region) on January 17th 2011.

    Welcoming the participants, Mr. Sanjay Malhotra, Member RegionalCommittee, ACMA (Northern Region) and Managing Director, Jumps AutoIndustries Ltd. briefed about the birth of Six Sigma philosophy which tookplace in Motorola. Mr. Malhotra also emphasized on using the processimprovement tools to reduce the defect levels to below 100 ppm.

    Mr. Malhotra said that Six Sigma is a disciplined approach to improvedecision making process, such that people start giving guaranteed

    decision using data & analytical approaches. The concept of Six Sigmahas a wider perspective as it not only covers manufacturing relatedareas, but also non - manufacturing areas like sales, marketing, finance,human resources, purchase and other support functions said Mr.

    Malhotra.The initiative of ACMA on Six Sigma has trained and certified 411 BlackBelts of which 209 are from the Northern Region and 112 Green Belts ofwhich 90 are from Northern Region said Mr. Malhotra.

    He then formally introduced Mr. Ram Narayan the faculty for thetraining programme. Mr. Ram Narayan has been the sensei for all theearlier batches, he said.

    The participants have rated the training as very good to excellent and areexcited to take their projects.

    GD&T

    New Delhi: January 21- 22,

    2011

    ACMA (Northern Region) organized atwo-day workshop on GeometricDimensioning and Tolerancing(GD&T). GD&T is the collection ofsymbols which is used, by designengineers to communicate geometricrequirements for components andassemblies. GD&T which is based onEngineering and Manufacturingprinciples ensures reduction in cost, interchangeability, and integrity ofdesign requirements and has been widely used in manufacturingindustries as their mechanical drawing standard. The faculty, Mr. SanjaySharma, DGM, Rico Auto Industries Ltd. explained in detail that GD&T is a

    language that enables design engineers to "say what they mean" on adrawing, thus improving product designs and lowering cost. GD&T is acommon technical drawing language for the designer, tool manufacturer,

    gauge manufacturer, processengineer to accurately describe thesize, form, orientation, and location ofpart features. It encourages designersto define a part based on how itfunctions in the final product orassembly. While explaining thebenefits of GD&T he said, applyingand interpreting GD&T correctly leadsto creating clear and concise drawing,that reduces assumption throughoutthe manufacturing process, improveproduct design, and effectivelycommunicate design requirements tosuppliers and manufacturers.

    The workshop was organized to share standard method of interpretingthe design and to determine best manufacturing approach. Manysymbols and terms i.e. Zones, Tolerances, Datum etc. used in GD&Twere discussed during the session. The workshop was focused onactual data with case studies and exercises for product, process anddesign engineers.

    Training Programme on Effective Communication

    New Delhi: January 28-29, 2011

    Continuing with the focus on HR, ACMA (NR) organized a Two DaysTraining Programme on Effective Communication Skills.

    The faculty for the programme Mr. Rajiv Mathur, President & CEO ofAakansha Management Group said Effective Communication Skills wasan essential part of organizational success, which promotes openness,transparency, mutual trust andenables projects or processes tomove forward. Poor, unclear andineffective communication leads tomistrust, low moral and costlymistakes, he said.

    ACMA-YBLF Visit to and Interaction with InfosysBangalore: December 15, 2010

    With an intent of learning from other industries on managing growth,

    ACMA-YBLF and members from the Regions visi ted InfosysTechnologies Ltd. to understand how this challenge can be handled fromtheir experiences.

    The Infosys team shared its experiences in the IT sector and how itgeared-up for the challenge and managed its growth so well that it hasbecome an icon today.

    Infosys mentioned that their formula of success is by actually having a

    SOUTHERN REGION

    Plan, Infrastructure, Process and System in place to scale to any heights.It was easily understood as: Scale = Plan +Infrastructure + Process+System. They also briefly touched upon the various opportunities in theIT sector for ACMA members.

    The delegation was led by Mr. Ravi Machani, National Coordinator-YBLF

    ACMA. Mr Ravi Machani expressed an interest in exploring opportunities

    in the IT sector that could benefit ACMA members as a whole.

    The members felt that this being an introductory visit, should be followed-

    up for better results.

    48 Breakthrough Kaizens presented at ACMA Southern

    Regions 2nd Kaizen Contest & Conference

    Bangalore: December 17, 2010

    The 2nd Kaizen Contest of ACMA Southern Region was hosted by the Karnataka& Hosur Zone, aiming showcasing the breakthrough Kaizens in variouscompanies by the Junior and Middle Management, the contest saw 48 Kaizensbeing presented, which is an increase of almost 100% as against 25 Kaizens lastyear. The scope for the contest focused on, Quality, Cost, Delivery andProductivity.

    In his inaugural address, Mr. Subash Suresh, General Manager SupplierDevelopment, TVS Motor India Ltd. and the Chief of the Panel of Judges of thecontest mentioned that Kaizens were a necessity which comes from a customercentric approach.

    Citing examples from TVS Motors, he mentioned that at the Associate level 36suggestions were received per year per person. There were 360 QC teams with

    over 950 projects that saved over Rs.2crores for the company. As a new initiative,the company had also started involving the temporary workers in the suggestionscheme. At the SIT level, Mr. Suresh mentioned that there were 350 teams workingon 3700 projects. Another initiative of the company was the Profit ImprovementProject wherein executives are involved to identify waste at the workplace. OverRs.50 crores worth ideas are generated with a potential savings of over Rs.10crores through this initiative, he mentioned. These are benchmarks that ACMAmember companies emulated to achieve cost and quality competitiveness. Hecommended the efforts of ACMA in spreading awareness and interest amongst thesupplier community on QC and Kaizens.

    ACMA Southern Region organized a one-day Workshop on Failure ModeEffective Analysis (FMEA).

    The workshop which was attended by 40 participants was highlyinteractive.

    ACMA (SR), Mr. J. Sridhar, Zonal Coordinator Chennai & Nearby,mentioned that the objective of the workshop was to analyze themanufacturing process for effective controls and to train on how to foreseethe failure modes in the process and take preventive actions. Hementioned that while quality and delivery were imperative, cost reductionwas constantly being demanded by customers and only the toughest andfittest organizations would survive. There is an urgent need for all of us tocut cost and for doing that we need to be more innovative, by adoptingvarious methods and practices, he said.

    Introducing the faculty, Mr. J. Jayabalan of Quality ManagementDevelopment Centre P. Ltd. or better known as PQMDC , Mr. Sridharmentioned that Mr. Jayabalan had Implementation knowledge of Supply

    Chain Management Issues and also acted as an external Change Agentin many improvement activities in client organization.

    Learning will help you in upgradation of your knowledge and skill, and theimplementation of these techniques will definitely help you and theorganisation and in turn the entire industry, said Mr. Sridhar.

    Mr. Jayabalan during his presentation mentioned that FMEA was arisk management tool and that timing of FMEA was very crucial. Hedeliberated in detail on how to capture the voice of the customer andincluded games, exercises and videos to give practical experienceto the participants. Feedback should be collected from the rightcustomer he emphasised.

    The workshop covered in detail, understanding the customersvoice, introduction of FMEA, Methodology, PFMEA. The workshopalso provided understanding of relative risks, how to prioritize,benefits, guidelines, and the 10 step norms.

    IMTEX 2011 - 15th Indian Metal-cutting Machine Tool Exhibition withinternational participation was organised by IMTMA.

    A 15-member delegation from ACMA led by Mr. Arvind Kapur, VicePresident, visited IMTEX 2011 which focused on the complete productsegment of metal cutting machine tools and Tooltech 2011 which focusedon newest trends in cutting tools and tooling systems from across theglobe. The exhibition saw about 80.000 business visitors from across theIndian manufacturing industry interaction.

    ACMA Southern Region (Karnataka & Hosur) organised a one-dayWorkshop for members on Failure Mode Effective Analysis (FMEA).

    Mr S M Hegde Regional Committee member of ACMAand VP Commercial, BOSCH Ltd. welcomed theparticipants to the FMEA workshop and explained theimportance of FMEA in the manufacturing industry. Theobjective of this workshop was to help teams to identifypotential failure modes based on past experience withsimilar products or processes, enabling the team todesign those failures out of the system with the minimum

    of effort and resource expenditure, thereby reducingdevelopment time and costs.

    Mr Hegde spoke about Nano and Toyota whose productswere called back from the market to rectify few defects.This not only involves a lot of time and cost to thecompany but also affects the reputation of the brand.FMEA analyses helps in learning from these failures,which can be avoided in future.

    The faculty for FMEA workshop was Dr S M Jagadish of Zero DefectConsultants (ZDC), ZDC is involved in implementing QualityManagement system to all types of industries.

    Mr Hegde shared his experience and guided the participants to learn theconcept which could be put to use in their respective workplace.

    Paying due attention to the area of Human Resource management whichis being viewed to play a significant role in times to come, an HR Forumwas launched in the Region under the umbrella of ACMA HR Committee.

    Speaking on the occasion, Mr. F.R. Singhvi , Chairman-HR Committee,ACMA, said that there is need to strengthen HR in auto componentindustry. Mr. Singhvi opined that HR & IR should be looked as twoseparate subjects as HR is related to development of human resource

    whereas IR is more related to legal issues.

    The Chairman said that to address all these we need a group of peoplefrom HR itself to meet regularly to deliberate on the subject and learn formeach other by knowledge sharing. The focus should be employeeperformance, training people for improvement and sustain the

    improvement, Mr. Singhvi said.Mr Singhvi suggested that initially the membership be restricted to 15 to20 member companies to create a motivated and committed group. MsSheena S Minhas, Director (HR), Honeywell Turbo India) Pvt. has beenappointed the Chairperson, of the Forum.

    The Vision 2020, a joint study commissioned by ACMA with itsknowledge partner M/S Ernst & Young (E&Y), indicates that the Indianauto component industry has the potential to grow from its current level of`1.2 lakh crores ( US $ 26 billion) to almost 5.4 lakh crores ( US $ 113

    billion) by 2020. Vision 2020 also says that among the challenges thatneed to be addressed immediately to capture this potential, availability ofskilled manpower is going to be a major challenge. In view of this theindustry needs to develop HR practices that enhance recruitment andretention of both management positions and skilled labour. Attracting andretaining global talent and building a performance culture will beimportant. With this back-drop, ACMA (Western Region) organized aconference on "Effective HR Practices".

    Propelled passenger vehicles which constitute over 35% of the totalpopulation of coaches on Indian Railways. RCF recently rolled out IndianRailways first air conditioned Double Decker rake, comprising of 10coaches (08 double deckers and 02 Power Cars). The coaches are clearillustration of Indian Railways capabilities in design and manufacturing ofnew types of rolling stock. The double Decker trains would herald a newera in rail travel in the country, because now a common man would beable to afford air conditioned travel at a lower cost.

    Mr Pradeep Kumar, General Manager, Rail Coach Factory, and his teaminteracted with the delegates on trends and opportunities in passengercoach manufacturing in Indian Railways (IR). The visit to RCF plant wasan eye-opener and the delegates got to know about the opportunities forindustry sourcing.     ACMA Members Visit to Rail Coach Factory,

    Kapurthala & International Tractor Ltd., Hoshiarpur

    With the focus on infrastructure development, the Govt. of India hasplanned huge expansion of Indian Railways offering an investmentopportunity of 68,000 crores, in total, a part of which will be for theexpansion of rolling stock manufacturing. This offers a huge opportunityfor ACMA members to orient its business to meet this new demand, in acomparatively risk free environment.

    In order to commence an organised initiative in this area, ACMA-Aerospace, Defence & Railways Committee organised a visit to and

    interaction with senior representative of Rail Coach Factory (RCF),Kapurthala, Punjab, on January 28, 2011. The objective of this visit is tounderstand the business potential and component supply opportunities toIndian Railways.

    Established in 1986, RCF is a coach manufacturing unit of IndianRailways. RCF has already carved a niche in the industrial scenario of thecountry at large and Indian Railways, in particular. It has manufacturedaround 16000 passenger coaches of 51 different types including Self

    The delegates were taken for a guided plant tour of the Volkswagen plantand Autostadt.

    The mission members then had an opportunity of meeting Dr. FranciscoJavier Garcia Sanz, Member of Board of Management & Head -GlobalPurchasing, Volkswagen AG who welcomed the mission on behalf of VWgroup. Mr. Srivats Ram profiled the Indian auto component industrythrough the ACMA Presentation. Dr. Garcia cited that Volkswagen aspiresto produce 1,60,000 cars in India by 2011 and be the largest carmanufacturer by 2018. Dr. Garcia also opined that Volkswagen willcontinue to localize to obtain full cost advantage of India.

    Dr. Garcia while summarizing his expectations from India mentioned thatwhile Indian suppliers are good in castings and forgings and they lack inthe area of safety, electronics, plastics, injection moulding, interior parts

    etc. Dr. Garcia opined that Indian suppliers should also be moreconscious towards quality, labour, productivity and tooling. Dr. Garcia alsohighlighted the lack of professionalism in project management.

    During the course of the discussion President briefed on the followingareas where Volkswagen could work together with ACMA:

    Train the trainer programme for ACT (ACMA Centre for Technology)Counsellors to facilitate upgradation of quality and productivity atTier 2 and Tier 3 levels as well as to address specifics related toprogramme on Project Management.

    Automotive Cluster at Saxony: We would like to know more on theprogramme content/curriculum and how some of the initiatives couldbe integrated into ACT cluster programmes.

    Supplier networking between Tier 2 and Tier 3 levels with regard topartnership / technology between Indian and German companieswith support of Volkswagen.

    Following the above interaction, meetings were held with senior membersof global purchasing team from Interiors, Electronics, Exterior and Metaland Powertrain group respectively. The members also had an opportunityof making their corporate presentation with specific groups.

    4. Visit to BMW, Munich

    BMW made a presentation on Sourcing from India for the BMW Groupand briefed about the BMW Supply chain - Challenges and Solutions.

    The above presentation was followed by a presentation by Mr. SrivatsRam, President, ACMA.

    After a brief discussion with the purchasing team, the mission memberswere taken to BMW Plant 1.1. / Dostlerstrae for a visit.

    The delegates also had an opportunity of interacting with Dr. HerbertDiess, Purchasing & Supplier network / Member Board of Management

    and Members of BMW Purchasing Department over lunch. Other seniormembers from BMW also joined the luncheon meeting.

    5. Visit to Sona BLW Przisionsschmiede

    The mission members then called on Dr. Surinder Kapur, Chairman,Sona Group. Dr. Kapur gave an overview of BLW and on the componentsbeing manufactured in the above plant and the technology being used.

    The delegates were then taken for plant tour after which Dr. Kapur gave a

    presentation on Sona Group. Dr. Kapur then shared his experiences and

    insights into the challenges of acquiring an international manufacturing

    facility and managing the same.

    6. Interaction with Consul General Mr. Anup Kumar Mudga

    The delegation called on Mr. Anup Mudgal, Consul General, ConsulateGeneral of India in Munich. Mr. Mudgal briefed the delegates on the

    outstanding relationship the two countries enjoyed and informed that next

    year would be the German year in India in commemoration of 60 years of

    Indo-German diplomatic relation and 2012 would be Indian year in

    Germany with the theme People to People. Mr. Mudgal encouraged

    ACMA to organise an active participation in both the events.

    7. Visit to Fraunhofer Institutes

    The delegates were welcomed at Fraunhofer Headquarters by Dr. Dirk

    Meints Polter, Advisor to President who then addressed the mission

    members on the opportunities for cooperation between ACMA and the

    Fraunhofer Institutes.

    Mr. Srivats Ram made a detailed presentation on ACMA and the

    suggested way forward for technical cooperation between ACMA and the

    Fraunhofer Institutes. Ms. Anandi Iyer then profiled the capabilities of the

    Fraunhofer Institutes in the automotive space.

    The delegates were then taken to Fraunhofer ESK - Fraunhofer Institute

    for Communication Systems ESK. Fraunhofer ESK (which is a part of a

    chain of 59 Research Institutes in Germany) undertakes applied re-

    search focused on information and communication systems that are

    simultaneously secure, powerful, intelligent and simple to use.

    and protocols and system to intelligent applications.

    After the visit, a workshop session on Resource Efficient Production was

    conducted which was followed by another workshop session on Modes of

    Collaboration between Fraunhofer & ACMA.

    Ms. Anandi Iyer then briefed on the plan to present the capabilities ofFraunhofer to the regional centres of ACMA in January 2011 coinciding

    with the IMTEX 2011 and Tooltech 2011 scheduled to be held in Bangalore

    from 20 to 26 January 2011.

    8. Visit to Daimler AG, Wrth

    Mr. Joerg Reiting, welcomed the delegation at the Daimler Truck plant in

    Wrth which was followed by an AV presentation on evolution of Daimler

    and visit to the truck plant.

    After the visit to the truck plant, the delegates interacted with the team at

    Daimler over lunch after which the mission travelled to Mannhiem for a

    visit to Daimler bus plant.

    The delegates were then shown a presentation on Daimler plant followedby ACMA Presentation by Mr. Srivats Ram. One-to-one business

    meetings were also arranged with Daimler purchasing team.

    9. Meeting with Mr. Hans Remsing, Deutsche Bank

    The delegates had an interaction with Mr. Hans Remsing, Director-Head

    of Industry Expert Team Automotive & Engineering from Deutsche Bank

    who gave a presentation on M&A in the Automotive-Industry.

    would remain on high strength steel in keeping with future emission

    norms. High strength steel reduces the overall weight of a vehicle with an

    increased fuel efficiency, thereby helping reduce CO2 emissions.

    Tata Steels joint venture with Nippon Steel is expected to boost the coldrolled coil production from the present 1.6 mt to 2.2 mt for the Jamshedpur

    plant. Tata Steel has also developed Mn 440 tensile strength steel in cold

    rolled and galvanized category for structural members of cars.

    Another new product, the interstitial free high strength exposed panels

    will help reduce weight of body in white by around 6-10%. Speaking on

    the delegations visit to Tata Steel that was the first interaction of the year,

    Mr Srivats Ram, President ACMA, addressed on the growth potentials of

    the automotive sector with challenges common to both the sectors. The

    component industry, he said, was keen to understand Tata Steels plans

    specifically catering to small members requirements.

    President ACMA, complimented Tata Steel for being the first Indian Steel

    company with the prestigious Deming award to its credit- an acclaim veryfew steel mills in the world had achieved.

    The ACMA delegation was also taken for a tour of the plant. Members

    visited the pickling line & tandem cold mill, 100% hydrogen batch

    annealing line and also the automotive galvanizing line of Tata Steel

    which is the only one in India .

    The members Executive Committee ACMA also interacted with Mr H M

    Nerurkar, Mg Director, Tata Steel on 11th January, 2011.

    Visit to and Interaction with Tata Steel

    Jamshedpur: January 10, 2011

    Coinciding with the Executive Committee meeting in Jamshedpur, ACMA

    also had an interaction of the EC and members, Raw Material Committee

    with Tata Steel, Jamshedpur .

    Welcoming members to Tata Steel, Mr T Narendran, Vice President

    (Flats), gave an overview on the Tata Steel production facilities and its

    expansion plans. With a capacity of around 27 million tons globally, Tata

    Steel, said Mr Narendran, was one of the top 10 global steel companies in

    the world. The company also was the single largest supplier of flat

    products to the automotive sector .

    The interactions he said, would enable members ACMA understand the

    Tata Steel production plans specifically for automotive steel requirements.

    Tata Steels Jamshedpur plant currently produces around four million tons

    (MT) of flat products and is expected to increase to approx 6.5 MT in an

    years time.

    Talking on the overall domestic steel scenario, Vice President , Tata Steel

    felt that while the entire demand of hot rolled steel was being met by

    domestic mills, supply of cold rolled steel could be a constraint for most

    high end grades even though at lower levels, at least till FY 14/15 .

    Seminar on procedure for obtaining financial

    assistance from SIDBI & MSME for SMEs

    ACMA-SME Committee organised a SME Seminar on Procedure forobtaining financial assistance from SIDBI & MSME for SMEs.

    Mr. Sunil Arora, Chairman - SME Committee & Joint Managing Director,Abilities India Pistons & Rings Ltd., welcomed the speakers, viz. Mr.Dharmendra Prakash, Jt. Development Commissioner, Ministry ofMSME, Mr. Ramesh Dharmaji, General Manager, SIDBI Mumbai & Ms.

    Anubha Prasad, Asst. General Manager, Northern Zonal Office, SIDBI.

    Speaking on the occasion, Mr Arora said that the Vision 2020 Report ofACMA had given a special thrust to the SMEs as the report revealed thatthe Indian auto component industry had a potential of turning out to be aUSD 113 billion industry by 2020 from the existing level of USD 26 billion -an extremely challenging task. He further stated that the challenge called

    for a significant upgradation of the SMEs.

    The Seminar was focused on the procedure for obtaining the financialassistance under the following schemes :

    Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (CLCSS) Scheme of SIDBI.The Scheme aims at facilitating Technology Upgradation byproviding upfront Capital Subsidy to SSI units through which theSIDBI provides Rs. 15 lacs to each SSI unit.

    Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro & Small Enterprises(CGTMSE) set up jointly by MSME Ministry & SIDBI. Credit facilitiescovered under this scheme are : Term Loans and Working CapitalFacility up to Rs.100 lakh per borrowing unit, extended without anycollateral security or third party guarantee.

    Risk capital is provided on the backing of cash flows from the

    business rather than asset cover/ collaterals. Risk capital can be

    availed for multiple requirements including bridging gap in promoters

    contribution, margin money on working capital, non-asset creating

    investments viz marketing, brand building, creating distribution

    network, technical know-how, software purchase, investment in

    energy efficiency and quality improvement products, R&D,

    investments in training and manpower cost, etc. The Corpus of this

    fund is . 2000 Crores.

    Bar Code by MSME : Financial assistance is provided by the

    Ministry of MSME to those companies who implement the GS1 Bar

    Code which is a global standard in bar coding.

    Mr. Dharmendra Prakash also emphasised on the other schemes that

    were available with the MSME Ministry to support the SME companies,

    viz., the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Programme (NMCP)

    under which the Ministry provides financial support to SME on the

    following schemes :

    Lean Manufacturing Competitiveness Scheme. Design Clinic Scheme.

    Promotion of ICT in Manufacturing sector.

    Setting up Mini-Tool Rooms on PPP Mode.

    Technology & Quality Management support for SMEs.

    Entrepreneurial & Management development of SMEs through

    Incubators.

    Encourage Quality Management Standards and Quality Technology

    Tools (QMS/QTT).

    Building Awareness on Intellectual Property Rights.

    Marketing Assistance & Technology Upgradation Activities.
