Hello Fast Lane Family,

The Fast Lane year of 2012 has come and gone. We have met so many great people at all the events, rallies, and benefit rides that have become good friends and part of the Fast Lane Family. We have put together a two page photo spread called “The Year in Review,” so check it to see where we have been.We have added new members to the magazine and also went LIVE on the internet through MadHouseTV.com with the show “Life in the Fast Lane” hosted by Tom Mele. It’s has been blast learning the publication business and getting the magazine out to everyone. It’s “Your Magazine” and I get the honor and privilege of putting it together for you.

Thank you to everyone that has been a part of the 2012 Fast Lane Biker New York magazine. It’s a reflection of all that you do with the rallies, events, and especially all benefit rides that raise money for those in need from illness, accidents, and catastrophes. We are a special community of people who are selfless and when we come together, there is nothing that can stop us when we have a vision on our goal! Much respect to all of you.

Our next big event is on December 1st. Check out the back cover of this issue and see what we are doing to raise funds, collect donations of clothes, foods, and supplies for those victims of Hurricane Sandy! MadHouseTV will be recording the event for their show on December 9th at 8pm.

Since the economy has had problems, a lot of the advertisers have opted to wait until spring to continue in their magazine. Fast Lane Biker New York will be combining the next couple of months into a December/January and February/March issue to keep the magazine going. The spring is going to be huge with everything that will be kicking off the bike season of 2013.

Keep looking at our Facebook page, FastLaneBikerNy on Twitter, and MadHouseTV.com. The Saturday shows will continue and keep everyone posted on what’s going on.

My name is Patricia Verdicchio, I am a single mother and a very unconventional person. I wanted to pay my life forward while having the freedom a single mom needs. With this being said, I founded Breast Cancer Killers of NY in September. I had a vision, contacted an artist, and very quickly it became a reality. What I started with was my edgy apparel line geared towards bikers. I host benefits and donate the money to the families to help with everyday expenses and the exorbitant co-pays insurance does not cover. I do this by organizing the benefits, usually done through donations from local bar owners (food and place), musicians (entertainment), and the local merchants for Chinese auctions. I got involved with this cause because my sister is a breast cancer survivor and I saw what this insidious disease does to the whole family. I grew up in the biker community riding with my dad since the age of 3 (RIP Dad) and saw that bikers are the largest group of people who come together for a cause. I geared my appeal line toward this community for that reason. None of this would be possible without the love and support I get from my Fast Lane Biker family Paula and Brian Gage, Tracey and Luigi from Vinyl FX my son Jake, and my mom, as well as my life long friends Chris, Lori, Stacy, their kids, and especially my ride or die Kimma along with the greatest boyfriend Dennis, so thank you all. Since September I have had 2 benefits for local women. One being Annie a 27 year old mom who has a very aggressive type of breast cancer. She lost both breasts as well as her job. The other being Rosa, a close friends mom. In attendance there was very strong MC support as well as Christine Nelly, BCKofNYs photographer and the official new addition to the besties, Gloria Ellrich who donates her proceeds from doing pink fusion extensions at all our events to the cause. We also had the honor of being invited to Rachaels run. A run for a 17 year old with Hoskins Lymphomia, which made us realize that we can help out wherever help is needed and the donation will go to whomever is in need at the time. We just collected a lot of clothes, blankets, cleaning supplies, and such for Sandy victims, so in the future look for the BCKofNY girls at local biker friendly events, tattoo shows, bike weeks and any type of benefit we'd be welcome at. If you or anyone you know is in need please don't hesitate to reach out to us because we love to help those in need. Thank you.

The 15th Annual Turkey run Hosted by the IDONTKNOW MC was held on October 28th, 2012. The weather was crisp on this Sunday morning as riders assembled at the starting point FORMULA 1 MOTOR SPORTS in Oakdale, Long Island, NY. This year ISLAND HARVEST gathered the generously donated turkeys from the riders for distribution as part of their OPERATION: HOPE effort. In addition to the frozen turkeys there was one six and a half foot tall turkey walking around rustling his feathers greeting everyone and adding a certain amount of pre thanksgiving cheer to the event. A site to behold for sure. The kickstands up was shortly after noon and the riders were eager to travel. The ride was smooth and when they arrived at the destination they were given a warm reception by members of IDONTKNOW MC. On hand were members of the NY GUARD and it was great to see them and thank them and other veterans in attendance for their service. IDONTKNOW MC club provided great food, refreshments and live music by JOE ROCK AND THE ALL STARS To start the festivities a young talented girl sang our national anthem, the star spangled banner, and when she finished was greeted with a huge round of cheers and applause. The benediction followed, given by Richard. Randi Shubin Dresner, president and chief executive from Island Harvest (Mineola) spoke and thanked all of the participants for coming and giving generously of themselves for the event. Fuzzy one of the Vice Presidents of the IDONTKNOW MC got up and said some kind words to all thanking them and hoping to see everyone next year. Then the members participated in ticket sales for raffles and Chinese auction items including a 50/50 drawing. Kathy one of the members of IDONTKNOW MC started off the process and kept it in high gear drawing winner after winner until all of the items were distributed There were trophy presentations for several categories including BEST REPRESENTED AMA CLUB, and BIGGEST TURKEY DONATED. Everyone had a great time for a great cause and it was even better that we avoided the weather that was coming over the next few days from hurricane Sandy. by G.W.S

by Rocco Capoccia Motorcycle Selection Many of you have someone close that you’d like to see get involved with your favorite hobby. Maybe the time is right for your favorite passenger to move to the front seat. Maybe a buddy is ready to make the leap onto a first ride. This month’s column is targeted for them. As someone that spends much time helping riders consider all sorts of safety issues, I worry when a new rider purchases a machine that will show no forgiveness if a mistake is made. Occasionally, a student tells me they have already purchased a motorcycle. Further discussion reveals that as a first purchase, they jumped into the swimming pool not realizing how deep it is. There was the time a first time rider/student told me about the brand new 1,000 cc super sport bike in the garage waiting to be ridden. That one hit the deck. How’s about the guy who bought his first time rider/wife a full dresser touring bike? It weighed six-times as much as her. When stopped, only her toes were touching the pavement. That one hit the deck, too. Fortunately, the only injuries suffered in these examples were minor bruises. The potential existed for far worse outcomes. How does a new rider choose a first motorcycle? The single most important area of consideration is the motorcycle’s intended use. You would be surprised at the limited attention this receives. Buyers think about the color, the extra chrome or carbon fiber parts, the new leather gear or helmet, but not the type of riding to be done. Think forward somewhat and envision the type of riding you might do. Here is an example of the opposite ends of the spectrum. The motorcycle you ride to and from work for a total of 40-minutes daily might be a very different vehicle than the one you use for weekend long distance touring with a passenger. Using the work commuter for weekend touring could take some of the fun out of riding. Making the long distance tourer your daily commuter could be more work than necessary. So, before the purchase, spend some time answering this question; “What type of riding do I think I’ll be using this motorcycle for?” Is there a safe, “starter” bike that a new rider is better served by? Generally, it makes sense to avoid radical motorcycles for anyone just starting out. Being seated in a more upright position should improve comfort allowing one to focus on riding. If you are un-comfortable, your mental processes will be diverted. Some of the highly customized motorcycles made by the specialty builders are truly works of art. But if you anticipate serious saddle time, those machines might not be your best choice to start with. An 800-pound touring bike could be more than a new rider might want to hold up when stopped. Super sport bikes with 165 MPH top ends have sensitive clutch and front brake actions and could get a new rider into serious trouble if manipulated abruptly.

There is no hard fast rule on correct weight or motor displacement. If you are built like an offensive lineman instead of a defensive back, you will want a bigger motor. If you are a cheerleader, then maybe smaller is the right way to start. If you are unsure of the type of riding you might be doing, and want to avoid price depreciation, pre-owned is a viable consideration. Ride it for a season or two to get some experience. By then, you should know the type of riding you do most. Keep it if it works or sell it/trade it in for something that better fits your needs. If you loose a few dollars on the sale, consider it part of your rider education cost. If you are apprehensive about a private purchase, buying pre-owned from a recognized dealer begins a relationship that could pan out when the time is right for that trade-in. Is there a social aspect to riding that needs to be considered here? Yes. “Belonging” to the group of people you want to ride with becomes part of the purchase consideration for some. Personally, I am not concerned about the type of ride you are on or what the gas tank badge reads. Yet some may want to ride a particular type or brand to fit in socially. The primary consideration should be a rational and comfortable selection, which makes safe operation easier. Status becomes a secondary consideration to comfort and safety. Should you ignore my advice and buy something faster, bigger, shinier, more expensive, etc.? You might see a motorcycle on the showroom floor that you must have. It might not make sense as a first ride, but its way too cool for you pass it up. Okay; I got that. Realize it will take more time/effort on your part to become comfortable with that machine’s capabilities. The more radical, the more you must work early on to get good at riding it. You want it? Go ahead, buy it. You work hard so treat yourself to a nice toy. But before going on the road, put some serious time into learning what you can and cannot do with it. Ride safe. Always. (Rocco Capoccia has been employed teaching new and experienced motorcyclists how to ride correctly for the past five-years. He may be contacted at [email protected].)

For your first purchase, select a mid-range sized motorcycle. That puts you on a ride that should be more manageable, power- and weight-wise. Do not get too caught up on the motorcycle’s overall weight as its center of gravity is of greater importance. Besides, the rider needs to hold up the motorcycle only at stops. A heavyweight cruiser moving at 65 MPH weighs nothing to the rider since he/she is not supporting its weight.

One of the biggest things you can do to personalize your bike is paint. Paint and art on your bike is like a tattoo, it tells who you are or want to be. Now you may just repaint the color it is, change the color or paint and mural it. It can be real simple or right out of this world. You may choose to add a little pin stripping or gold leafing to it. There is no end to how far you can go. Howard (Doc) Jessmer, a biker photogra-pher had a flamed out ‘49 black pan shovel with twin lightning bolts that looked like it was on fire going down the road.

We have a bike called Twisted, a custom build with 110 different skulls with awe-some paint. We have great art and paint on our bikes making them stand out even more than just our quality workmanship. One of the local bikes is painted so it looks like it changes 7 different colors going down the road. You can have almost anything you can imagine painted on your bike. A real good paint job can change an average bike into a good looker and a great looking bike into a show stopping eye catcher.

We suggest that you spend a little more on a real nice paint job to insure you get it the way you want it. Also we have had people come in and tell the painter a ball park of what they want and show them some ideas. The great thing about getting custom paint is that you will not pull up to an intersection or anywhere and see the same as your bike. After all how many times have you been to a run, meet or bike show and had a custom paint job just jump right out at you? Don’t think this is just a guy thing either. Some of the girls have some very awesome work done

to their rides. There are some great paint-ers out there that can make your bike into a one of a kind.

NEVER let someone tell you that anyone can do great paint and art work and there is no difference. That is like letting your 5 year old cut your hair, it’s just a haircut, RIGHT? Most artists that are very good will show pride in their work. You may have one painter do the base color and another mural it. If you do make sure they’re both good. ALSO, the winter is about here, go see your painter now and get things going. There is nothing a painter hates more than coming in about April and wanting your custom paint done in a week or two for riding to an event. Most painters will not rush it and remember you’re not the only job they have. With some painters, you may be on a 6 to 9 month waiting list. Great painters are in big demand. I hate to say this, but some of you will still wait ‘till the last minute and your bike will be apart waiting on parts or paint while the rest of us ride.

P.S. Now is the time to start ordering or getting things that you may change when the bike is apart to get it painted and be very careful not to hurt the paint putting it back together. HAVING A FEW TOO MANY BEERS WHILE IT IS BEING PUT TOGETHER IS NOT A GREAT IDEA!!! That little scratch could be expensive. Ride safe!
